Marketplace bites into breakfast, spilling juicy secrets about premium orange juice and putting popular breakfast sandwiches to the test.
About two-thirds of us have bought premium orange juice in the past six months, many convinced by claims of pure and natural juice, which make it seem like oranges fall off the tree into the carton. But that’s not the whole story. Tom Harrington talks to juice lovers and an expert who wrote the book on OJ, revealing just how much it is processed and what the labels don’t tell you.

Orange is the New Black.
Just tried to squeeze my own orange juice.
9 oranges and 6 dollars later I have a half of a glass. Delicious.
thats what makes it so easy to drink so much sugar and its not recommended for anyone. normally you´d have to eat 9 oranges for just half of a glass. at most you would propably eat a single orange in the morning.
In my country you can buy like 10 kg of orange for 6$
Anything can become juice with enough force. Consider including the peels, receipt, and bag it came in, then move on to your table.

I tried *concentrated OJ* (canned in freezer section) on a whim recently, and I was blown away by how much more "fresh-squeezed" it actually tasted!! *We could actually taste the fiber & peel, and its "oily" citric scent was divine.* I made it with our filtered water, and it cost much less than the premium, processed stuff. Perhaps it tastes so fresh because it's not stored for a year, which maintains it's natural flavor...not needing secret flavor packets that result from a chemical process on a natural occurring ingredient. I wish CBC had mentioned more about the concentrated versions and their process.
I'm going to have to ask my folks to pickup some canned frozen juices to test this out.
Warning: May contain traces of real oranges.

I wonder if it’s the added sugar that makes the processed stuff taste better.

And that's okay.
Declan Magee it doesn’t need to be :)
I'm more interested in it not being from concentrate than it being unpasteurised, because the laws regarding the labelling of how much water is added (beyond the volume of water removed in the concentration process) during reconstitution is lax.

Growing up in West Africa in the 60-70's, I remember we just peeled the fresh oranges and ate them any time. And there were lots of them too. If one wanted to be fancy, go ahead and squeeze them for some juice, which I always found to be too much work for the amount of juice one gets. People should be encouraged to eat more fresh fruits as much as possible. Anything packaged, often, cannot be free of chemistry. If you are enjoying some OJ in the winter months, you are most likely drinking from a batch from a pasturized storage barrel.
Everything is chemistry (H2O, O2, CH4....), but I get what you mean though.. ..
Are you residing in West Africa now. But I agree. Eat the whole fruit. The past few years I follow so many ppl that have a juicer or high powered blender to extract nutrients.

I've never thought the orange juice in cans / bottles was really fresh because you get orange at times of the year that oranges don't grow in your area, so that means it comes from other areas that are further way. Oranges start to go bad as soon as you pick it off the tree which means to get the orange from there to you something is added to keep it fresh. Not to mention you can't keep fresh squeezed orange for longer than a day. Anyway
Real oranges can only be truly enjoyed if they're eaten within the first hour of being picked; otherwise, the flavor isn't really there afterwards.
Yep, if you want fresh orange juice then just make it yourself. It blows my mind that people really think they're just squeezing oranges directly into the cartons.
Rusty Shackleford , obviously people don’t think somebody is squeezing the juice by hand. It’s mass produced so it’s a machine. You probably also think miss Vickie actually makes her chips at the farm.

Wow, people are so innocent to think that store-bought juices are natural.
How is anyone mad about this? It's been processed to improve it, that's a good thing. You can't expect any food from a grocery store to be 'natural' or 'unprocessed' and it's mostly just to make them better
Wow. You are insanely misinformed. Processed foods are the reason for tyoe 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases in our modern population. Pleae get informed.
Haven’t you ever wondered why every glass of Tropicana Pure Premium orange juice tastes the same, no matter where in the world you buy it or what time of year you’re drinking it in? Or maybe your brand of choice is Minute Maid or Simply Orange or Florida’s Natural. Either way, I can ask the same question. Why is the taste and flavor so consistent? Why is it that the Minute Maid never tastes like the Tropicana, but always tastes like its own unique beverage?
Generally speaking, beverages that taste consistently the same follow recipes. They’re things like Coca Cola or Pepsi or a Starbucks Frappuccino. When you make orange juice at home, each batch tastes a little different depending on the oranges you made it from. I hope you’re hearing warning bells in your head right about now.
The reason your store bought orange juice is so consistently flavorful has more to do with chemistry than nature.
Making OJ should be pretty simple. Pick oranges. Squeeze them. Put the juice in a carton and voilà!
But actually, there is an important stage in between that is an open secret in the OJ industry. After the oranges are squeezed, the juice is stored in giant holding tanks and, critically, the oxygen is removed from them. That essentially allows the liquid to keep (for up to a year) without spoiling- but that liquid that we think of as orange juice tastes nothing like the Tropicana OJ that comes out of the carton. (source)
When the juice is stripped of oxygen it is also stripped of flavor providing chemicals. Juice companies therefore hire flavor and fragrance companies, the same ones that formulate perfumes for Dior and Calvin Klein, to engineer flavor packs to add back to the juice to make it taste fresh. Flavor packs aren’t listed as an ingredient on the label because technically they are derived from orange essence and oil. Yet those in the industry will tell you that the flavor packs, whether made for reconstituted or pasteurized orange juice, resemble nothing found in nature. The packs added to juice earmarked for the North American market tend to contain high amounts of ethyl butyrate, a chemical in the fragrance of fresh squeezed orange juice that, juice companies have discovered, Americans favor. Mexicans and Brazilians have a different palate. Flavor packs fabricated for juice geared to these markets therefore highlight different chemicals, the decanals say, or terpene compounds such as valencine.
The formulas vary to give a brand’s trademark taste. If you’re discerning you may have noticed Minute Maid has a candy like orange flavor. That’s largely due to the flavor pack Coca-Cola has chosen for it. Some companies have even been known to request a flavor pack that mimics the taste of a popular competitor, creating a “hall of mirrors” of flavor packs. Despite the multiple interpretations of a freshly squeezed orange on the market, most flavor packs have a shared source of inspiration: a Florida Valencia orange in spring. (source)
WHY AREN’T THESE FLAVOR PACKS LISTED AS INGREDIENTS?
Good question! As with all industrial foods, it’s because of our convoluted labeling laws. You see, these “flavor packs are made from orange by-products - even though these ‘by-products’ are so chemically manipulated that they hardly qualify as ‘by-products’ any more.” (source) Since they’re made from by-products that originated in oranges, they can be added to the orange juice without being considered an “ingredient,” despite the fact that they are chemically altered.
SO, WHAT SHOULD YOU DO ABOUT IT?
First off, I must ask: Why are you drinking juice?? Juice removed from the fruit is just concentrated fructose without any of the naturally-occurring fiber, pectin, and other goodies that make eating a whole fruit good for you. Did you know, for example, that it takes 6-8 medium sized apples to make just 1 cup of apple juice? You probably wouldn’t be able to eat 6-8 medium apples in a single sitting. (I know I can barely eat one!) But you can casually throw back a cup of apple juice, and you would probably be willing to return for seconds. That’s why fruit juice is dangerous. It’s far too easy to consume far too much sugar.

Been doing this for years now. I told myself (and my wife) that for the same amount of money we would spend on commercial brand name fruit juices, might as well spend it on the real, actual fruit and make our own juice, smoothie or shake. OR simply just eat it as-is. Been trying to go all-natural or homemade as much as we can. Healthier, and actually also saves us a little bit, too.
This Makes me Happy that I live in Florida. I have multiple citrus trees in my backyard, so when I want orange juice I just go grab some oranges and my trusty juicer. There are also people that sell REAL orange juice on the side of the road that is super delicious. Greetings from Florida :)
That is cool and all that you love Florida. We know y'all about oranges, beaches, and The Golden Girls. I love oranges with pulp.
I can't believe people really still think drinking any kind of bottled fruit juice on a daily basis is healthy. There's too much sugar in ANY type of processed juices, even if it's "natural" sugar or naturally occurring fruit sugar. Drinking any citric juice daily causes havoc on your teeth, and the increased intake of sugars can't be good for your body in the long term. The family in the video that drinks six cartons a month...I'd really hate to see the acid erosion and dental problems that's going to develop some time down the road, especially the children with newly erupted adult teeth.
I love how they examine it like if they are examining wine

Drinking orange juice is like drinking soda--- pure sugar. If you like oranges, just eat an orange. Avoid PROCESSED FOODS.
Really? Pure sugar?
Exactly. Drinking 1/2 cup of orange juice is equivalent to eating 2-4 medium-sized oranges. All the fiber that orange flesh provides is removed during the juicing process, and all that’s left over is sugar from the fruit. Fiber is supposed to keep us full and prevent overeating. Sugary drinks cause overeating!
Indeed! Also for people who want to learn more about sugar and how juice companies try to market juices as healthy, I recommend the documentary “That Sugar Film.”
@Jesse Johnson, Sure , OJ companies don't add sugar, but oranges naturally have a lot of sugar. As Miki Hazel pointed out, when we eat whole oranges, we only eat about one or two before getting full, and we consume the fiber. However, if we extract only the sugary juice from the fruit, we can consume much more of it, because the fiber is not there to fill us up.
Juices do not have fructose corn syrup but a lot of sugar. Both are bad but juice can be a liiittle bit better.

The 'flavor packs' makes sense because they need to make your orange juice taste the same no matter when or where you buy it; you'd be peeved if it tasted different each time. Do I think they should add that to the ingredient list? Yes. But am I angry they do? Not really. If I want "straight from the orange" juice, I'll go buy the processed oranges myself, thank you.

I've been trying to tell this people for several years now, but people just seem to get defensive about it as if orange juice is their religion or something.
Fresh orange juice is easy enough to make at home but people have forgotten how to do it. My parents generation used to get fresh orange juice delivered to the home daily along with fresh milk in glass bottles. My grandmothers house still has a metal milk box by the back door which the milk delivery man used to drop the fresh milk off every other day. I think we need to go back to those days.

Fat and calories aren't inherently bad for you.. People who require a higher caloric diet need to pay through the roof due to food regulators / governments babying the population.
Make your own decisions / choices. Should food be clearly labeled? *YES!*
Should high calorie foods be outlawed, banned and recipes changed? No. Take responsibility for what you choose to eat.
Azurren This thing is out of pace with the current science. Excess carbs & sugar are the enemy, not Fat. Hell, even the sodium cause high blood pressure "fact" is now being questioned. Carbs & sugar cause high LDL levels, not fat and this is what is increasing blood pressure more so.

Biggs Darklighter Excessive vitamin A intake can lead to hypervitaminosis. Eating excessive quantities of most things is highly inadvisable.

Azurren Yeah, I totally agree with not avoiding eating or vitamins and minerals. I'd hate to sound arrogant, but I think when people comment on thing they're ignorant about it can spread. It's detrimental. I mean, I'm about to take a medical admission test and when I see people say things like, "Sodium being bad for you in excessive quantities is not true", it's just like... it's dumb.
Azurren They should make a law that prohibits people from drinking coca cola after 6pm, because it makes people sleep baldy...
5:33 *Explanation of process* - Juice squeezed then stored for months/year- all flavor disappears. "Flavor packs" made of orange oils & "essence" with the scientific name ethyl butyrate. It is re-added to high levels that don't exist in oranges. This makes the flavor consistent even when the oranges are not. Everyone is outraged.
Another insightful look at that the RIGHT HAND is doing WHILE the LEFT HAND is reaching for your health and money. Thanks please keep it going.
Could we please end this notion already that fat in food makes you fat. It does not. Excess calories, typically caused by eating too much refined sugar and junk carbs, is what makes you fat. In other words, it's not the burger, it's the bun, the glop on the burger, the fries, the Coke, and the desert that make you fat.
+Eric K How does a harsh environment make you fat?
+Eric K Depends which fats. Unsaturated usually are good and break down easy enough. Some of the saturated fats (that a lot of America fast food companies use) don't break down easily; and the fat gets stored in your body that makes you fat.
The key to stay in shape is simply eating low-calory-high-energy food in combination with regular working out.
STR33TSofJUST1C3
Sorry, but the giant hamburger bun has no fat, the ketchup you put on the burger has no fat, the fries have fat but are loaded with carbs, and the Coke has no fat. The actual beef you get in your burger is the least of our problems.
Eric K
Did I say that only fat makes you fat? You said that fatties don't make you fat; and I corrected you that saturated fatties are the worst of the bunch. I didn't say you were wrong on carbs.

"Low-calory-high-energy" Isn't that a contradiction in itself? Isn't the energy content of food measured in calories?

At my local grocery store they have a orange juice machine where you can squeeze your own juice with the power of a button, it's almost twice as expensive but is worth it 100%!
I grew up in Florida near orange groves where they would squeeze the oranges right at the groves and sell you the juice. So I grew up knowing how orange juice should taste - which is wonderful. First time I had some "orange juice" from a box, I could not believe how bad it was. I live up north now, but I still only drink fresh squeezed - preferably from Valencia oranges. Just bought a bag of Valencia oranges today and will squeeze them tomorrow AM. Will have orange juice for the rest of the week from that bag.

Nicaela Emily , they didn’t actually conclude the juice loses its nutritional value or is bad for you. They only concluded that juice may not be picked the day before you drink it. I’m sure if you knew how everything was made you wouldn’t eat or drink again.
@@andrewdishman335 pasteurization definitely kills all vitamin C, and I believe that is later added, again. It's a massive scam.
Andrew Dishman mmmmm they’re still lying, and it’s wrong. I don’t care if year old oj is exactly the same as freshly squeezed, it’s a lie and consumers are being duped.
FUN FACT - ALL Orange Juices that are concentrate or in a container are all 80% water and sugar. - Basically you are spending 5 dollar per half gallon of what they so call Orange Juice but in reality its Water and Sugar....... Happy Spending.
RecordTrance you do realize that that is the ingredients in actual orange too, right? what makes it taste and smell like orange is a range of esters and acids that make up a minuscule ammount of the total weight of the product. the grand majority of a real orange is water and sugar.
+ravener Rekt.
ravener in case you missed it, ill say it a bit slower for you. - One is Natural the other is Artificial. and side note, real Oranges has "Natural Fiber" which is needed by us biological humans, Fiber is needed for us humans to move our biological waste (poop) from our bodies naturally. Artificial orange juice has flavor packs. basically machine man made artificial chemicals. ooh and before I forget, Artificial orange juice has fragrances. Same ones that make perfumes that you wear on your body. so you are drinking chemical artificial flavor packs powder and fragrances from actual perfumes. - Also in regards to sugar & water. One is Natural and the other is not. Big difference as one can kill you while the other can not. ~ Happy drinking......
RecordTrance holy fuck dude. "One is Natural the other is Artificial" not really, concentrate is just orange juice with the water removed, the "chemicals" they may or may not add (to be honest i don't give a shit if they do or not) are the same esters and acids the orange makes. the "artificial chemicals" you speak of are chemically identical to "the real deal".
"Also in regards to sugar & water. One is Natural and the other is not. Big difference as one can kill you while the other can not." no, no it's not they are both sucrose c6h12o6 and is produced from sugar cane just as naturally as the oranges are. in some cases high fructose corn syrup is used, but that might actually be even closer to the original orange than regular sugar as oranges are naturally high in fructose. this comes after the fact that the concentrate is already high in sugars.
"Artificial orange juice has fragrances. Same ones that make perfumes that you wear on your body" no, they are not the same ones you wear on your body, they are the same ones that , in nature, oranges make. the ones you wear on your body generally come from flowers and such and are chemically different from the ones they would add to orange juice.
chemicals aren't scary, everything (for the most part at least) is made from chemicals. sugar is a chemical, vinegar is (mostly a single) chemical. the chemicals that make up orange flavour are chemicals (esters for the most part).
you seem like the kind of person to not get vaccinated, not exactly related, but just FYI, they work, go get them.
+RecordTrance You don't know much about science, do you?
Dude, that purple shirt is EPIC! Love it.
What I find odd is in my neighborhood you can get fresh squeezed at every corner restaurant or bodega. All communities should have that ease of access. It literally takes about 35 seconds for a cup of fresh orange juice 🍊 I just watched be squeezed in front of me. Gotta love nyc!
just drink water, the amount of sugar in any juice is not doing you any good ...
Its the vitamins people are after. Natural juices in fruits are fine as long as you don't have a huge excess
I advise you to let your water check at a lab. You might be surprised what is in 'just water'. Rainwater actually contains less 'ingredients' than tap water. The water companies need to put aal kind of anti-corrosives into the water to avoid rusty waterpipes.. Bet you didn't knew that..
@@2Fast4Mellow what are you going to drink then
Drink water and eat an orange...
@@PhanniHam Basically everything in life is bad for you. tap water contains all sort of corrosives, bottles water contains a lot of plastic. btw: Sugar itself is not bad, actually we need it. Sugar is one of the most efficient sources of food to give your body energy. That is why most high energie ingradients have a sweet taste. We are programmed to like sweet things.. As with everything, to much of something can also be bad for you.. It's all about moderation!
Wine experts can’t even tell apart the taste of red wine and white wine so why trust them with orange juice?
@@MisaloSloe the price of the wine has nothing to do with quality or taste so there's that.
Brandon Le it’s not just “self proclaimed” wine experts but also the “real” ones
The Proclaimed are you kidding? I don't even drink and I can tell you a white from a red...don't be daft!
After watching this documentary, I still like the taste of the heavily-processed orange juice!
This video squeezed 5 minutes out of my life when it could have been concentrated into about 30 seconds.
Who eats breakfast sausage daily? For me it's mostly a road trip thing.
+Karol Bała its an occasion thing. If were making a real breakfast for the family to have together or something, thats when we'd have it. On random morning when we're all doing our own thing, maybe 1 day out of 30 Id make sausage or bacon to go with the eggs.
+Karol Bała really popular in university campuses across canada
+Karol Bała Who eats any types of sausages? Gross!
johnny clue gross? in Poland i've had the best sausage!
+Karol Bała same i only eat sausages on road trips well somtimes at my house
1:03 *"Wine Expert"* Adam ruins everything anyone?
yup I have, like Adam said, they are full of it lol.
TheFelish33 now adams a feminazi
no he just want you educate yourself on the misleading information of food products i actually learn alot from this segment of segments i watch an hour or so of it got an ear food
TheFelish33 lmfao I thought that when I heard that
Oranges are a tropical fruit. Tropical fruits used to be a luxury. Before the days of chemical processing. They were only delivered fresh. They also weren't available everywhere, because they were intended to be fresh, and that's not possible to do. If you demand all of these exotic foods from places far away from you, and all year around, then processing is the price you are going to have to pay. If you want fresh food, shop from local farms and learn to adapt to your region's natural crops.
We have a store on South Africa where you can buy oranges and they juice it in store for you. It removes the pulp and everything. Best orange juice ever
How the hell can a person write a whole entire book on orange juice 😂
And she was so serious takking about its like its a life threatening issue
She must've included a lot of juicy gossip.
I would be the same person who produces these network shows that are full of filler and take an hour to say something that can be said in 1 minute. I could only watch half of this string you along so you can watch our commercials show.
Is called orangeholic
I read Twinkie, Deconstructed.
Yep. A book on what is in a Twinkie.
As a native Floridian, this is why I never buy any of this packaged junk.
Everything is chemicals. Whether it's created in a lab or in a fruit, a molecule is a molecule.
@@IsomerMashups - Sure. But the molecules they are creating in their labs and adding to the processed juice are not identical to the molecules that their processing removed from the juice. Not even close. Easy enough to squeeze your own and that is what I do. Tastes sooooooooo much better. Like two completely different beverages.
jawtek82 you’re correct also same deal with sugar
jawtek82 natalies or country side is the best don't @ me
same my family will make it by themself and never bought it from a store
0:57 yoooooo you can tell this man is a _PRO_ wine taster
my local grocery store takes the apples, oranges, celery, etc. and juices it for free if you bought the fruit from the store. THAT is premium fresh oj, when u see it being made.
Nobody:
Absolutely nobody:
Not a single person in the world:
CBC news: *makes 22 minute video about premium orange juice*
It’s so Canadian of them 😂
I just drink tap water. I always thought juice was just an expensive pop and it turns out I was right. Even the same corporations that make pop own the juice industry.
Prairielander : Yes. I agree it is expensive sugar.
Buy a juicer and make your own juice. I don't want to eat a bucket full of fruit so I just juice and drink it and get all the vitamins and good stuff that way.
Prairielander even tap water is processed unless your using a tube-well/water pump or rain water.
Tube well or water pump water is natural. Nothing else is pure
It amazes me how ppl are so surprised that things are processed and not natural or real. The simple fact ia this. If you dont want to grow it pick it and prepare the food and instead buy it from a company that will do all the work for you. It has to be processed to survive the process.
Watching this with awe on how people used to chill together before..
I'm also a fan of orange juice
If you want 100% natural oj you gotta make it your self from real oranges.
I can’t I live where oranges don’t grow
Don't forget about the chemicals your squeezing out with the juice ?🍊
Not if Monsanto has anything to say about their definition of real oranges.
@@Solisium-Channel
Who is that ?🤷
I've been making orange juice for years with my braun juicer. It comes out similar to what you would buy at an Orange Julius stand. It's translucent and super delicious. There's no duplicating that flavour or consistency 😋
Used to work at Lykes Pasco juice processing plant im Dade City Florida from 1991 through 1994. It is all the same all brands were made from the same oranges. Bluebird, Minute Maid, Winn Dixie brand and many others all processed in the same way, same plant.
Smells FLORAL
Best OJ I have ever had is fresh squeezed. My grandparents had an orange tree in their yard that produced in volumes. Grandma would bring us oranges or we could pick some when we visited them. Nothing like a glass of OJ you just squeezed from 6-8 oranges. If you want great OJ in the morning, buy fresh oranges and squeeze away.
I'm grateful for this report. I'm glad that people are finally starting to find out the reality about marketed orange juice. I remember reading about how orange juice is processed and have ever since then bought fresh oranges and kept them in my refrigerator. When I want to drink some oj I simply pull out an orange or two and squeeze them directly into my glass. Nothing like the flavor (and health benefits) of REAL orange juice!
Most people would be disgusted if they found out how decaf tea & coffee is made
It's not the best place in the world on every scale but I really love the fact that fresh fruits and veggies are so cheap in my country that we need to actively go out of our way and spend more to consume unhealthy food. There's no daily struggle to eat healthy.
