That lady from the Food Label Agency is definitely getting lobbied.
Crazy the power a lobbyist has.
Tony Tan That lady from the government is probably getting money under the table from these companies look how she’s defending them! At one point I thought she worked for the company and not for our government! Shame!
Why, because she thinks people who can't read are foolish? I've personally never bought something thinking it was Canadian simply because it had a maple leaf printed on it. She's absolutely correct. No one can control what these companies print on their labels, unless it's something that is provably false. Hell, they could probably go so far as to include the Canadian flag on their labels - that doesn't mean anything either! It must read "Product of Canada".
lobbied these days is just a pretty way of saying bribes
There's no such thing as the Food Label Agency. The CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) is responsible for food labelling in Canada.
Very uneducated lady. She had an arranged marriage. She doesn't know what life is about
I spent July in Scotland. Their labels on produce (e.g., a pack of strawberries) not only said the country where it was grown, but the name of the farmer as well! I loved it and it encouraged me to buy local. I actually started to get familiar with the small differences between varieties produced by different farms. Even processed foods had an emphasis on local ingredients on their labels (e.g., a bag of chips has a label stating "100% Great British Potatoes"). Companies should start voluntarily labelling when using local sources. I'd certainly seek them out to support them if so.
This is common all over the EU.
Buying locally is more eco friendly too. Way to go

Big corporations are squeezing profits and flavour out of fruits and vegetables. Use to be strawberries were sweet and tomatoes had great flavour, now they taste like a bland apples.

Watched the farmers market video also and I have to say, I'm so surprised by the lack of consumer protection laws are in Canada. I thought that they would have more laws and regulations in Canada than in the USA.
I'm actually surprised Canadians aren't leading the world on food awareness.
You can argue about EU, but got to admit, eu has really strict food regulations. Labels must include country of origin. Also farmers cant use antibiotics or other drugs to prevent diseases on animals, like they do e.g USA.

Don’t drink your fruit, eat it. The problem with fruit juice and smoothies in general is that they don’t have the fibre that solid fruit and veggies give you. Therefore, the smoothie will not make you full, and all you’re getting is sugar carbs with no fibre like real fruit has. Drink water.

In Australia, They have to show on every product sold where the ingredients have been sourced and made. If it's made in Australia, it has to show what percentage of the ingredients are Australian and what percentage if any is from what countries. If the labels don't have than information, you can't sell it in Australia. This just came into force July 1st 2018.

@@PatrickBaptist Australian Beef is grass fed. I'm from the States, and it took me a bit to get use to Grass over Grain. I must say, Grass fed is a much better flavor once you get use to it and then go back and try grain.
@@joshuachilcutt5416 I'm aware the claim was it's grass fed, that really just means for awhile and then they are fattened up on the grains, I've worked farms, been there and played that game. Grass fed is a better flavor, but it seems you only really notice so much when you buy from small farms, where I get mine they fatten the beefers up on fruit pulp the last 6 weeksish. Not to mention they have VERY clean water.

If you don't know where your food comes from how can you ensure good processes and safe practices?
I can travel an hour outside my city and see apple trees...and small towns on hard times. I'd like to think all of my food meets regulations that my government has set but this way there's no accountability to anyone. You'd have to know the regulations of every country and whether they're even enforced.
@@rosestewart1606 Same, I live in Niagara and you have no idea how much fresh locally grown produced is thrown away if unsold.
@@maxdondada You have an excellent point. But, it still comes down to whether harmful practices are used and that isn't solely dependent on location origin. Technically we don't need to know.. just what's done to the apples. (I'm not advocating for ignorance on where our food comes from)
@@rosestewart1606 you're totally right. But I feel like this argument is futile. Whether eating at a restaurant, going to a friend's home or buying apply juice, we don't know whether acceptable practices are always used 100% of the time

The herbicide 2/4/D has been outlawed in USA and Canada, but sold to many third world countries. So guess what you are consuming! They also have an industry regulation(guess who made it up), that states if a company in Canada spends 51 % of the value of the product value that they call it a product of Canada. For example if these industries buy fish from China for 10 cents, they make sure that they spend 11 cents to have it processed in Canada, then call it a product of Canada, leading consumers to believe it was caught in Canadian waters by Canadian fisherman.
I NZ has similiar laws, hence why I'd never eat anything imported from NZ as I live in Australia. Things imported from NZ could actually be from China.
2/4/D is a plant killer.
You obviously have no idea how herbicide or pesticide works.
lifesabitch90
Listen up bird breath. Did I say somewhere that 24D wasn't a herbicide, I was stating how it was outlawed in many states in the USA and Canada, but the research(still being debated) showed it was toxic to people and animals. But third world countries are still using this poison and sending their product to America and Canada.
Since when was 2,4-D banned in Canada and what does it have to do with apple juice?
a few years ago a supermarket in the netherlands had a (luckily very shortlived) practice of putting a little story with pictures on the back of products of small family businesses owners that produced the same product that you were buying (so a dairy farmer on the milk, apple farmer on the apples etc)
Like "this is farmer so-and-so, his wife and their two children, this family has been running the family farm and farming apples ever since his dad has left it to him and the farm has been in the family from the mid 1800's... etc"
nowhere on the package did it state that this product was made by this farmer, it just stated that this farmer also produced milk, just like the milk you were buying.
As soon as you realized this, it was quite comical to read the labels, and see how much work had gone into formulating the story in a way that it was always implied but never mentioned that the family farm in the spotlight had anything to do with the product in your hands....
Very informative, thank you for pushing the boundaries, apple trees overseas maybe sprayed with banned insecticides in North America as they have different standards, the chemical residues linger in the fruit.
Exactly, holding local farmers to high standards for environmental reasons is worthy(and not to be lessoned) but if the result in another country over producing in a environmental destructive way...is a dangerous situation for that country and their neighbors and the world

Exactly my thoughts lol. Covered in preservative wax. Apples like that are up to a year old in grocery stores (when coated)
They are Mcintosh apples.. they are naturally shiny. You can even google mcintosh apple on tree and see that even while still growing on the tree, they are very shiny, so obviously after a bath (as we see in one scene of this episode) before being packaged for sale, they are going to be even more shiny with the environmental dirt/contaminants washed off.
@@Febreezy very naive reply. All you have to do is simply ask yourself.. "if apples are coated in wax to last for up to a year in a grocery store.. then why do they still shrivel and go bad in my house within a couple of weeks?"
@@LycanWitch It's not an urban legend. I used to work in a Supermarket. Produce can be upwards of 6 months old, it ages slowly because it's kept in big fridges below 5 degrees Celsius, usually at 1-2 C. This helps maintain the fruit or vegetable and slow the ripening process.

I dont really understand why would you wanna know where the apple concentrate is coming from. If it is cheap to import from China why would companies buy Canadian concentrate and increase their costs which would at the end increase prices. Chinese, Chilean etc. apple concentrate is actually lowering the prices. As long as companies do not claim their concentrate is from Canada there is nothing wrong and Canada Choice does not really mean 'FROM CANADA' If the public thinks so it is their ignorance. And what difference does it really make you dont need to know the origin of apples and why would you want to. It is the same apple in China and Canada. PS not from Canada
