I am glad about the CBC Marketplace trying to stop scammers and educating Canadians, but at the same time victims need to be told to turn off their computer in case the scammer is connected to their computer as well as to call their bank and CC just in case. Why? Because even if they did not send money, as long as they had logged into their online bank while the scammers have been connected to their computer, they install keyloggers and could easily make new CC in the victim's name and details.
Being informed is the key to unsuccessful scam attempts. Thank you for shining a HUGE light on what’s going out there. You’ve magnified the issue tenfold!
Shame on the RCMP! Shame on all the politicians who have failed to address this very serious issue with meaningful action. Far more needs to be done. 50 hours of community service is not a strong enough deterrent. All that does is promote Canadians as "free" targets for this disgusting act. Thank you Marketplace, Jim Browning and all those who target these scammers.
Polyticians are NOT on our side. They are on the NWO side. They want people broke, hungry and homeless and dependent on the International masonic mafia that most call gooberment.

What is rarely talked about is how many scammers have inside help from people who get jobs at banks and tech companies solely for the purpose of mining data, selling info or being directly involved
VERY VERY TRUE. this is their starting point. often victims have no clue they've been targeted. The data collected is a lucrative business for these scammers.
It is even simpler than that. Anytime a user registers an online profile with government, or online retail or an online game or a rewards card that information is sold to brokers.
Yup and it was not lost on me that the convicted scammer had a job interview at a bank. That should say enough right there, he probably knows someone that works at that bank already.
Jim Browning is a hero and has saved people from being scammed out of millions. The man deserves a medal, or maybe even a MBE from the Queen as he lives in England.
This is so sad. I used to work in a CRA call centre a few years ago. I remember getting a call from an officer at immigration that some guy had shown up at an office in tears and having a panic attack. The guy had recently became a permanent resident(less than a year) and got a call that he owed like 10k in taxes and he had to pay up or be deported. I ended up speaking to the guy and calming him down and clearing up the problem but he was so terrified. I felt so bad for him
Ya, what people do not know is that people who are new to the country come from countries where this type of thing might actually happen from government, so they don't know what it legit or not where. They are easily victimized, and part of the immigration integration does not teach them to recognize scams. I have family from Iran that came to Canada, so I know how easily they may fall for this because of the difference in culture.
Jim Browning is the Godfather of all those who are fighting back with this scammers. He fights back with brain, ITC tools and impunity towards scammers. And with kindness towards victims. And that makes him a noble person and human being. Big fan of J. B.
I was getting 15 calls a day. It was making me crazy. Then I turned on my do not disturb except contacts. On my voicemail, I inform the caller if you aren't in my contacts you have to leave a message or a text and I'll respond. It made all the difference.
Unfortunately with the liberals in charge, the RCMP will not get involved with no support from the feds. Everybody in this country with any common sense knows the libs are only looking out for themselves, NOT the everyday average Joe. Sad.
I’ve dealt with customers who’ve gotten calls about this btw. Best advice i can give is this let it go to voice mail wait a few minutes and then call your financial institution. A legit financial institution would leave clear documentation with what the message was about with instructions.
Anyone who accepts stolen money should have their citizenship revoked and be deported back to their original country. With a touch of enforcement, that would end it.

It’s not just elderly. My husband is an authority follower and not tech savvy. He told them he didn’t know how to access our bank account right then but could they call back in an hour when I got home. Interpol is not an agency, just a group of police officers from different countries that work together. This is an investigation in scammers in Canada so Interpol is sort of irrelevant. Overseas scammers need good overseas police officers that are a part of Interpol to take down scammers operating in their own back yard.

I've personally gone through this with my mother-in-law. Lost $200K by the time we found out. I understand the system and how these scammers work. Can't blame the RCMP. Sending large sums of money in a brown paper bag to some address is not different than giving that bag of money to someone on the street. Here you go, enjoy the gift. The money never stays in Canada. As soon as its received its forwarded to a foreign address. At that point, the RCMP has no jurisdiction. This happens so quickly that by the time the RCMP is involved it's too late. You may be asking why the RCMP doesn't just visit those addresses and question the occupants. Who is the RCMP to trust, did you actually send the money to this address, did you send a box of confetti, even if the money was received the recipient could deny that or claim they received a generous donation of money and they spent it. No crime in that. It's like finding $20 on the street. The first, last, and only line of defense is the account holder, never trust emails, texts, or phone calls, visit your bank in person, and have a backup person you trust accompany you, a friend, son, or daughter. This could all be avoided if these people had just visited the bank in person. You can receive notifications through email, text, or phone, but the rule is only action events by visiting the bank in person.

Shame on the scammers.
@@hphinn unfortunately those things know no shame. Or decency. Or humanity. Etc.
Shame on us for paying them hundreds of billions of dollars to not do their job.

Well done jim browning I cant believe jim has made it on Marketplace what a perfect combination
I was surprised they didn't have him on speed dial as a resource. hes truly invested in what he does.
Wow, I just clicked this Video without knowing Jim Browning is involved here. When I heard his voice...Goosebumps. He is a legend. We need more men like him.
People like Jim Browning and "Casey Hunter" are nothing short of heroes.
Jim Browning is a life saver. Putting his knowledge to good use.
Omg I feel so sorry for the elderly that worked all their life to save money for retirement and to have someone come along and steal it all it’s sickening. Thank God for my friend Jim Browning because he is the GOAT. Thank you all so much for all that you do ❤
It's horrible what others can do! I work alot with the elderly. When the news is brought up I make sure to talk about scammers like these and what they can do to protect themselves. It happens alot more then we think unfortunately.
Miss Stephanie Humphries!! ♥
how can you just believe this. not once she went to the bank in person & see what's going on in her acct? I just don't get how can you just send money? ridiculous clueless
Hi Stephanie Humphries
@@starbright1256 These scammers are experts and they target the elderly and vulnerable who live alone, they used to target my dad who has dementia until I put a stop to it. He never gave them any money as he was too confused to understand what they were talking about, but they still kept trying and called him several times a day.....until I moved in with him and changed his phone number.
God, I wish this wouldn't be produced in the american soap-opera "documentary" style, but great work still. Jim Browning is the man, watch his videos. Great explanations of how these scams work, exactly the right stuff to watch with the people in your lives who might need the information.
Actually unwatchable
I almost choked from laughing when he started writing on the whiteboard. Then I felt terrible when the woman said she had lost $200k. Good they're putting a spotlight on this stuff, even if the editing is.. a bit much.
For me it was when they pulled up cars next to each other and we got several minutes of super dramatic zooming on trash cans. Self parody at that point!
Was glad someone else picked up in the terrible production and missing the ball on this necessary message . So
Unfortunately this fast-paced on-edge editing style seems to be the only way to grab mainstream tv watchers' attention.
The generic hacker image that they gave Jim, with matrix digital rain on the monitors around him was super unfitting and hilarous
Jim Browning is a legend! Been watching his videos for years! Glad he got involved with Marketplace!
I just got chills when a PI in WINDSOR, ONTARIO actually is making a difference! Windsor has a lot of corruption, so THIS Is GREAT to see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My thumbs up to you Sir!!! I stand corrected that law enforcement won't do anything! It is nice to be wrong at times like this.
All the Scammers from all over the world should be ARRESTED and PUT IN JAIL. GOD BLESS YOU ALL THE TEAM.
No. Not good enough.
Immediate. Capital punishment
Cool to see Jim's hard work finally getting more recognition! Keep it up man!
That should say enough right there, he probably knows someone that works at that bank already.
not really, its much easier
every company sells your data, anyone can but it, so scamers just take advantage of that
So true...sad indeed
Jim Browning is a hero and has saved people from being scammed out of millions. The man deserves a medal, or maybe even a MBE from the Queen as he lives in England.
Think he lives in Belfast.
I have family from Iran that came to Canada, so I know how easily they may fall for this because of the difference in culture.
jim is a true modern day hero!!! doing work that is changing the world
I have alot of respect for Jim Browning. I've watched his videos for along time. He deals with scammers in a professional manner.
Agreed. Super impressive that he can talk to these horrible people while remaining calm.
Jim Browning is a genius . Been a fan of his work busting phone scammers for years.
Jim Browning is the Godfather of all those who are fighting back with this scammers. He fights back with brain, ITC tools and impunity towards scammers. And with kindness towards victims. And that makes him a noble person and human being. Big fan of J. B.
Good for you guys for helping these poor people!!!I cannot believe this is all they're doing to him!! Insane
I was getting 15 calls a day. It was making me crazy. Then I turned on my do not disturb except contacts. On my voicemail, I inform the caller if you aren't in my contacts you have to leave a message or a text and I'll respond. It made all the difference.
Well done Marketplace! Let's hope the RCMP starts to focus on this pervasive issue again.
Marketplace has been doing these investigations for 5 years. RCMP has done very little.
Geee you are so naive ! RCMP is too scared to appear insensitive to the scammers and hurt their feelings.
if that guy paid 55000 in restitution how how did he make from ones he wants caught for?
Unfortunately with the liberals in charge, the RCMP will not get involved with no support from the feds. Everybody in this country with any common sense knows the libs are only looking out for themselves, NOT the everyday average Joe. Sad.
@@jpcaretta8847 1
The most shocking things is to know that RCMP doesn't care at all about these crimes . Impressive!
Your cops and politicians are involved!
90% of these are done by guys in India....so...
Even that first guy they tracked down is an Indian dude...
Call the American 🇺🇸 Feds
Grady Judd and Chad Chronister would nail these pricks
@akplmn They can do something about the money mules.
I’ve dealt with customers who’ve gotten calls about this btw. Best advice i can give is this let it go to voice mail wait a few minutes and then call your financial institution. A legit financial institution would leave clear documentation with what the message was about with instructions.
Feel so proud for what're guys doing at CBC. That's true journalism here
Market Place is doing a great job for innocent elderly Canadians.
I appreciate and send my gratitude to the Market Place team members of the CBC.

I'm new to your channel. I watch a lot of scam programs, but I love that you actually STOP them in their tracks!!!! LOVE IT!
Anyone who accepts stolen money should have their citizenship revoked and be deported back to their original country. With a touch of enforcement, that would end it.
exactly, even scammers who are residing in that host country
Absolutely
I agree with you 💯
What if they aren't born in a foreign country?
@@-SP.
Put them in prison under an indefinite hold until the parents’ home country will accept them.
If Canadians have the political will, they can do any anything that hey want.
Look what they did to the truckers? They put them in jail and froze their accounts just for honking horns.
I am an elderly but these thieves will never get me because I refuse to answer my phone if I don't know who is calling. If it is my mother/children calling from a number I don't know they better leave a message and I will immediately return the call. My answering machine say leave a message, you leave one I will delete if I don't know you. My guards is always up enough my phone rings. Thank you guys, God bless. I
You got that right if they don't leave me a message I'll consume it's a scam I have calls 4 or 5 times a day if I don't no the number I'll never answer and I block unavailable numbers they want get me either
Yeah my mom get a lot of calls daily and she lets the answering machine answer. Most scammer won't leave a message.
Jim Browning is a national treasure.
I know it's dramatically ramped up but it's feels like they did real investigative reporting bravo 👏
I live in the States and I love watching these journalist. I love watching this channel either way.
There is a special place in hell for these scumbags.
Preying on the Elderly is unforgivable.
Respect for bringing this to light.
It’s not just elderly. My husband is an authority follower and not tech savvy. I came home one day to find him throwing up because he received a phone call telling him he was going to be arrested due to back taxes if he didn’t come up with $9,000. He told them he didn’t know how to access our bank account right then but could they call back in an hour when I got home. They started yelling at him and telling him he had to stay on the phone with them until I got home or they would send the police because he was trying to flee. The only thing that made him get off the phone was the stress making him throw up. My husband was 44 years old at the time.
@@pineapplegirl8078 I do understand as age doesn't matter if the individual is not tech savey as most people are not.
I've received a few calls myself, one came when I was watching a Jim Browning clip.....

It’s gotta be tough being an honest and good Indian citizen living in America or Canada. It’s really gives their country a bad name.
Yeah especially the middle man also an Indian. Few bad apples spoiled the entire community. Gorvement should kick them out for good to regain some public trust to the community.

God Bless "Jim Browning" and the Windsor Ontario PI and CBC Marketplace!!
10.30 she says ‘how can they look at themselves?’ How naive she is. They are KISSING their reflections in the mirror! This is the new gauge of success today. Destroy others and pat yourself on the back. As another person commented here, this behaviour is considered normal, good, desirable.
Scammers should get life in prison. It is intentional wrong doing.
I agree with you
I agree with you, but unfortunately, the Indian police get a kickback from the scammers, and the American/Canadian law enforcement officers can’t really do anything, because most of the scammers are in foreign countries
We should the deport any of the ones who were granted Canadian citizenship.
they should execute scammers
I agree with you wholeheartedly, I too got scammed 8,000 by these scumbags.
Jim Browning should host a seminar teaching people how to counterattack those scammers
@@oldyellerschannel4676 you're right, we wouldn't trust anyone online and would not click on the unknown link.
Just a real life example - I have a 10 years old daughter and we just bought her a laptop for her birthday last year. I have to remove all the malware and trojan software from her laptop on weekly basis. I wouldn't blame her. All the malware ads/traps look very legit today (your computer has virus and click ok to fix it...blah blah,).
I think it would be same for the elderly persons.
The scammers destroyed all the trusts in the world. Period.
I do agree but I think that's why he posts videos on yt. To educate us on how to spot and prevent these awful people from scamming us and others. I mean it only takes 1 person to spread the word after all.
you shouldn’t show your hand. if that happens you’re basically shortening the lifespan of the exploits used
That's a double edged sword, making your tricks and exploits public can also help scammers think of countermeasures.
This was a very good exposè I want to see more investigative documentaries like this.
I want to see more investigations & jail time not just slaps on the wrist. There’s high rate of scammers in India
This is it. Well done guys. Really. You're able to tell a story that no one else can and that makes a difference.
How could someone that was welcomed with open arms into a new country have so much hate in their heart for its citizens to do this.
We need to get Interpol to follow these people and charge them criminally. We could also hold the companies that process their online scams.
Companies can't be held accountable they prolly didn't know or was scammed or finesse into thinking it was real
@@williywonk3374 they are making money on the transaction and they know that a certain percentage is being used illegally.
Interpol is not an agency, just a group of police officers from different countries that work together. This is an investigation in scammers in Canada so Interpol is sort of irrelevant. Overseas scammers need good overseas police officers that are a part of Interpol to take down scammers operating in their own back yard.
RCMP at this point should just give you the resources and legal permission to make arrests and investigate official matters relating to scams
while everyone want justice against the scammers, you're advocating for vigilantism
I work at a bank and we see this all the time! The worst scams are the romance scams, because you tell these people who are lonely and in need of affection, attention and love that these people are scammers and they don’t believe you. They end up sending the money anyway. It’s so sad 😭
Working at a bank really opens your eyes in a lot of ways....
I feel so sorry for the elders that aren’t aware of the types of scams going on, heck I’m 27 and consider myself “tech savvy” and almost fell for a very sneaky scam myself. My coworker ended up falling for the scam and told me about it, and I felt like he opened my eyes to the fact that this can happen to anyone.
Now, I never give info over the phone if I don’t have to and if I can physically go into stores to get help for anything that’s what I do, that way you know you’re giving your secure info to people that aren’t out to steal your identity.
@@NoCallerID86753ohNineIf someone cakes and asked for information, what does that have to do with being tech savvy? Stuff like that doesn't happen to anyone, just the folks without good sense.
I am literally so sad about how they can do this, can be this bold on just lying on the face while scamming, hope they don't get out doing this. I hope this video reaches out to a lot of people and I don't want anyone to be scammed
I was scammed a number of years ago. If you engage a scammer in conversation, they will call you back. Please turn off your phone and only turn it on to check messages and place calls for a week. Otherwise they will keep calling.

Thank you so much Jim for helping vulnerable people
And you can wondering why not all media are doing the same job when they are supposed to do just that! Instead they have stories about celebrities and sports...

This stuff needs to be taught and showing in school how to protect our identity our money our privacy and our family instead of learning about French or US history as a Canadian citizen I’m 42 years old I’ve never used French or used US history for any job anything on a day-to-day basis thank God I know what to do when these lowlife scammers call me and I informed my 82-year-old Oma what to do.
These scams usually only work on the very vulnerable like elderly people.
History is important to learn, whether you use it in real life or not is irrelevant.
French, history and other subjects are important in schools. You might not have had to use french, or whatever, dosent mean it didint help someone else. It helps open your mind to what you like, to what you might want to do later on as an adult. Every subject dosent have to translate into a 1-to-1 skill in real life to be useful!
We had to take courses about cyber security stuff every year in school in Tennessee
Banks need to stop selling our info.
And also phone companies
I am so glad that you folks are really there to help beat scammers. VERY INTERESTING how you can hack right in the scammers computers see and listen to them. more people should really watch your channel to learn what is going on and how to recognize some of them. Surprises me people believe who you are after just being scammed. THANKS TO YOU AND YOUR GROUP for ALL your service!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for all you do to make our communities and country safer!!! It is a shame our law enforcement agencies cannot do what folks like Jim Browning are doing voluntarily. We should be funding these types of programs.
The RCMP need to get it together and start working to protect Canadians. It's almost unbelievable that they're doing so little on this. Well done to everyone for bringing this issue to light, and for keeping the money of innocent people in their hands. This is one of the best episodes of Marketplace ever.
It is the government - and by extension , the citizens - who need to direct RCMP to do this.
RCMP is doing nothing to protect citizens, instead TV broadcaster has to investigate and find criminals. RCMP has to justify their high benefits and salary doing what they got to do. No more excuses RCMP.
Jim Browning is a legend! Love him, he does great work to help people.!
We in the USA are hearing troubling things about the Canadian government starting with their Prime Minister.
It’s sad. You can tell some of the victims on the phone are older and they seem so genuinely confused. Very sad.
I don't feel safe for my relatives as well as my family members regardless how they old they are. I feel so stressful after watching this. But I think this is an important to watch. Thanks for doing this. We all not just Canadian but everyone from other countries appreciate it.

I'm fearfully respectful of Jim's skills. He fights for the right causes but he is not someone I'd be on the wrong side of (although I would love to learn some of them - if even just to understand it as an IT professional and someone who likes tech).
I had a scammer try to steal one of my rental houses in Katy Texas. The police would do nothing. I tracked down the money mule and sent two heavy dudes to have a little chat with him. Needless to say haven't had a problem with people trying to steal my rental houses since.
@jim browning you legend!!!! Thanks for lending your expertise to help Canadians become more educated about these scams!
I had to do this when my mother was nearly scammed for the second time. If it happens again, Jim Browning is now one of my brothers. See how fast the scammers hang up.
You can stop the calls by answering them, and teasing them for as long as possible. I had a guy foaming at the mouth for like an hour, then told him I got mugged on the way to the bank. When THEY figure out you waste THEIR time THEY blacklist you on THEIR end.
I love it when scammers are either crying or ranting when they lose. Pirogi even had a scammer boss destroying his computer after losing the money.
How rewarding it would be to be on the side of stopping and nailing these scammers. It’s so pathetic they target elderly people
It's sad that random people online are actually doing more about the scammers than the police. It's disgusting
I unplug my landline. I block every caller except friends. These people should be put in jail, but I don’t think it will ever happen.

Many of those named seem to be NEW CANADIANS.
Many of the addresses were in Mississauga or Brampton.
.
Hmmm ... I wonder what that implies?
.
Hackers vs Scammers. I love it! I'm 📞 all hackers to please use your talents helping the victims especially the vulnerable elderly.
Omg. This channel is so precious. There are journalists that help so much and deserve the most credit. Keep going. Thank you because I am learning from this channel here in CANADA. God bless you journalist investigators and thinking about us regular working people. ♥
