Be interesting to watch how high the beans grow up the black oat stems to lift pods off ground. And yes we could all do with a nice shower of rain just to give crops that extra lift needed
Liked the technical details of the drill and the beans, the companies and college concerned. Who says Britain is no longer innovative. Thanks for the effort. Hope those who walk footpaths appreciate your efforts.
The tech on machinery is unreal.
Always look forward to Sunday morning's Waffle........ Always interesting, always varied. It's going to be interesting to see how the trial of the beans goes...... I didn't realise that baked beans weren't already grown in the UK. Great content as usual. 👍
I’ll do regular updates on the beans.
Great informative video. I was captivated by the technical information of the drill. It's no wonder that farming machinery can cost a fortune. When you realise how much research and development goes into them.
I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your farming friend, Peter Jinman. You did him proud with a heartfelt, genuine tribute.
Thanks Peter.
Very informative as usual. What an odd spring. I dare say that the weather in Lincolnshire is similar to here in Ely. Drying quickly, quite chilly and no prospect of rain for a while. The sugarbeet is ok for now but a drop of water would help.
Exactly the same, only 12° today.
Excellent video Thank you for posting .
Another interesting blog Andrew thanks
great video good luck with beans
Interesting video. Black grass particularly bad everywhere this year. Nice seed drill very complex machine. Did like the Case 175 cvx tractor. Still very much a plough man here and can’t think I will change any time soon and soil looks in good health do spread a lot of cattle muck. All the best for harvest.
Ploughing is good for FYM. Thanks for your comments. 😊👍
That was a sudden ending! 😅 I'm glad you managed to get some footage of such slow steady rolling in. Of course its not often you get to roll that slow, but very interesting to see the difference/benefits compared to some types that go so fast the rolls are barely ever on the ground, or even a goldilocks speed (all ground is different of course). I kinda wanted to see a bit more though.
My forecast (SE Leicester) says we have another week of dry sun, and hopefully the week after we might start to see some showers. When can you ever rely on the forecast though eh!?! Let's keep our fingers crossed!
Very interesting seeing how the drill works, such simple but logical principles.
Great video/s Wardy, keep up the good work!
I was considering not doing an outro so thought I’d try a week, thanks for the comments, lots like them!
Good morning Andrew 🙏 respect to your dear friend ... interesting video
Thanks Nigel.
Good morning 😉
Hello!
Good morning Andrew. I hope walking from your footpath sprayed strip into the crop you have not spread the “ footprints of shame” from your boots
I hope not, time will tell!!
May sound like a silly question but do you not destroy some of the crops when u walk though them or do they always bounce back?
Not really, they always get up, maybe just before harvest they can get bashed about a bit but the combine gets it all.
So is the cover crop a good idea?
Or not going forward and are you happy with sheep grazing ?
Not happy with sheep either on heavy land cover crops. Tried it last year but they compacted it, even though they were on and off quickly.
What happened at the end? It just stoped abruptly
I didn’t do an outro, on purpose to see if you want one or not! I was going to ask in the next video about an intro as well, wi seeing if it’s wanted or not. I know some RUclipsrs such as OllyBlogs don’t in his daily ones.
Thinner but lower cost of establishment so if yield is slightly lower profit margin is higher surely.
When you accurately calculate the cost per hectare of a £150k dd, (depreciation, finance, spares, repairs, insurance, fuel and labour) it’s a lot more than you think. I have cost calcification spreadsheets and have done the exercise. Compared to our 2004 Freeflow bought for £18k and 2004 solo written off in the accounts. I appreciate we have a 8RX but JD gave us a not to refuse deal. The cc field is always hammered by slugs, the other isn’t. Last year the cc field yielded 2 ton /ha less, that’s £500/ha difference in margins. Look back at my waffles where I go through this in much more detail.
@@WardysWaffleAndrewWard You're not comparing eggs with eggs at that though, in fairness. A near 20yo Freeflow with a new direct drill. I suppose you can make figures tell you what you want to see.
@@SpudSlingsby I can make the figures tell the truth
What I mean Andrew, is that you're comparing a 19yo drill that you bought second hand some years ago with a new direct drill.
If you were comparing say a second hand 6m Mzuri ProTil with the cost of running a Solo and Freeflow you'd have a different set of figures
@@SpudSlingsby but that’s my point. With cost of production I take into account establishing costs and we can establish crops as cheap if not cheaper with our Freeflow and RX than a smaller tractor and dd and we get better yields, you need to come on the 16th and have a conversation with me and agrii, and see the do and crops, to difficult on here.
In fairness Andrew you do seem to set the cover crop field up to fail - your attitude is 'it doesn't work here' so therefore it doesn't. My experience is very different, particularly with spring oats on heavy land. Its important not to get the cc too thick, so the sun and wind can get in to dry the soil in spring. The dead cc mulch then acts as a weed suppressor until the oats get competitive. The cultivation saving is very significant in root crops too.
I do t do anything with the intention of it failing. We’ve had 4 different crops in 8 years. In 8 years we are at a financial disadvantage over our normal system. I never say it doesn’t work here so it won’t work anywhere. You’re forgetting we have 2 different soil types, it works a doddle on that. Ask Philip Wright, ask numerous Agrii people, they’ve all been involved over the 8 years and all given big input. Some of the things we do aren’t my idea, it’s theirs but we do them because I don’t want to leave any stone unturned. You need to come to our open day on June 16th to discuss standing in the field with others, not me, instead of saying I’ve no intention of it not working.
Thank you for that invite, if I can get away I'll come along
With respect I’ve found that you can’t direct drill with a simba free flow( I’ve tried )put a Claydon 6m behind that RX or a 4m muzri and put the legs in deep that is the sort of horse power you will need to pull those drills properly ,then you will see a increase in yield and even larger increase in profitability I’ve been experiencing for the past 15 years and found that shallow cultivation’s do not work on heavy land; they are maybe ok on sandy/light land, and tip is drill one weeks earlier in the autumn and one weeks later in the spring
We can dd all spring crops into stubble, and after a cc if it’s been destroyed long enough. The oats in our 8 year cc and dd trial was drilled with the freeflow
Did you see the dd trial last year? We had a claydon and sumo in the 10 drill line up yet the Freeflow yielded better. We’ve also had deep working DD’s in the 8 year trial field but the field next door in our conventional system yields better.
You can do a lot of cultivations for the £100k a dd would cost, o think we’re sticking to what works and gives us the best return.
Did we lose the outro Andrew?
I didn’t do one!! I’m considering not doing an intro either, I’m going to ask everyone what they think.
I like the intro and outro but I realise that they make more work for you
😊👍 I’ll do the same as I did when I asked if viewers wanted 1 or 2 updates a week and take the majority view.
I think keep the intro, but just say a thank you for watching over the end bit or something.
Thank you. I do try to keep the outtake to 10 seconds or less. 😊👍
