It's an AWESOME feeling when we join the farmer's cut their crop... we would like to thank you for letting us join you while you work... we both have MS but ENJOY being with you around the farm... Do you know how AWESOME we actually feel like we are helping out ? It's an AWESOME feeling, thank you for SHARING your VIDEO... May GOD BLESS you...
Nice looking stand of oats and alfalfa! Your previous videos confinced me to try the rye this year as a cover crop. Has benefits that will fit our farm needs! Thhank you for the insight!
great to get a good stand. last fall i paid $ 470 a bag for round up ready glad i didnt plant but about 10 acres. it is so dry though the stuff hasnt got to 10 inches yet. it is dry land that will sub irrigate when it roots down. i could see that better when it was still standing. looks good there. hope you get no rain for a few days good luck Ted.
Thanks for the video. I'm fairly new to alfalfa myself and it's always nice to see how other people do it. I tried new seeding alfalfa into fall planted hairy vetch this year. If it weren't for July foxtail I would have been consistently happy with it. Thanks again
Ted, this was an extremely helpful video. Thank you! I'm currently researching the planting of different crops for a huge literary project. From this video, would I be right in thinking that one can plant corn, alfalfa, and oats at the same time and/or can plan one's fields to grow these three specific crops at the same time? Also, is there a place a non-farmer like me can go to ask questions about farming? I'm trying to make my writing as accurate as possible and have questions about harvesting times for four different groups of vegetables. Thanks for any help you can provide.
id say you cant plant all those crops at once i was planing oats and alfalfa in a corn field from last year. not sure about veggies... id say if you keep watching you tube you could learn alot
Watching you blast across the field made me think my Kuhn cutter should cut faster then it does I went and got factory Kuhn blades and noticed they were 2 in longer then the tsc blades and the difference was something else heavy hay from the first cutting usually was 5 mph now you can run 6 or 7 without any problem like the videos keep it up every producer should always pay attention to what's going on because you can learn a faster or more economical way to do even small things looks like that hay is going to be really good we are getting the rain this year what kind of bulls are you running this season
I run Angus bulls. Yea i have heard some of the aftermarket blades are different or shorter. Been getting some blades from Si distributing for about half of the cost of oem blades and been really happy with them. Ill be making a video of them when i decide to change them out.
Hey Ted watching in 2019 good stuff! How do you have your gps set up? I’ve wanting to try that with my stuff but wasn’t sure how with the swather offset. I assuming you just set your width with a little overlap and go? Running just WAAS?
Ryan Frasier just running wass and I went and cut with out gps measured from center of one swath to the next swath ended up being one foot smaller than cut no offset
Good video nice looking crops. Sides you have the meddle rollers what type of rollers are they are they the type with pointy edges? Or the type with the more curvy smoothly edges that's not to pointy? Cuz a neighbor down the road from us has a macdon hydroswing haybine and that machine has the rough pointy edges on his rollers. Other than that again good video👍 sir.
Hey Ted, we have found over the years we get a much stronger alfalfa stand if it is allowed to reach flowering before first cut after establishment. Probably difficult with the oats in that respect but something to consider. What are your sowing rates? Cheers, Harry
Have heard that so far this has been working good.... if i didnt have cattle i wouldnt be planting the oats with it but since we always want feed it seems to work. Seeding rates for the oats was 60-70 pounds per acre. Alfalfa was right around 12 pounds per acre. for straight oats i plant around 100 pounds
The oats heading will affect quality but it wont matter for our use.... i actually just like to get it before any seed is in the head as its easier to get dry when there is no moisture in the seed. BUT seems like i always let the oats head out before i actually cut it
With all the rain it sure is thick now I just need a conditioning mower to help on dry time 2 years in a row we have raced to do hay so going to have to dry the hay down faster next year
dont own a chopper. not ready for a silage pile at the moment. and cant make baleage without a wrapper..... nobody has one of them around here... it made beautiful dry hay
You must be able to open up the conditioner on the cutter as to not squish the milk out of the oats? My father in law tried cutting his oats with a haybine and the back end of the machine was pure white after
They can be wrong year round and still on Friday the check is the same and if they really feel lazy they put scattered chance of storms 20% and your stretch that out for ten days and then report on why or what happened with a good old tropical disturbance and high current aloft has set in and has stalled over the Midwest causing said conditions and collect a check haha
Ted Kahler you sure can't bale if you never knock it down I put a big field down because it wasn't going to stand much longer and it got dark but never rained showed 5 days of good weather so I cut another field down rained off and on for 3 days and finally quit
I can smell it all, fresh cut oat hay, hot hydraulic oil, the dusty cab of the tractor, the heat humidity. I miss it all awesome video
thanks

its all up in bales already .... this was filmed close to 2 weeks ago. Lots of hay to go yet though

sgdummy to get rid of the foxtail you just have to spray with a generic select. I have a video on that as well
Some good looking feed! Agreed on those weathermen haha!
thanks...
I really like that discbine crop looks great too
i love the discbine as well.... thanks for watching
That mower really steams along its a good rig
I am inlove with that mower... cut 190-200 acres in the last two days.... only cut 50 today and didnt start tell 1 yesterday...
Looks s great crop of stuff Ted

Hey Ted, we have found over the years we get a much stronger alfalfa stand if it is allowed to reach flowering before first cut after establishment. Probably difficult with the oats in that respect but something to consider. What are your sowing rates? Cheers, Harry

Hard to beat oats. What's your average dry down for that size of machine. I would like to go wider on the next one. 2.5 days for 9 ft on good hay.
this year.... terrible.... normally can cut grass and bale in one or two days..... this oats crop pry normally close to 3 days
Nice thick stand you have there. Will the oats going to head affect the quality any?
The oats heading will affect quality but it wont matter for our use.... i actually just like to get it before any seed is in the head as its easier to get dry when there is no moisture in the seed. BUT seems like i always let the oats head out before i actually cut it
It always seems to sneak up on ya
Just curious on what your auto steer setup is and how it has been working for you?
trimble system... works great
With all the rain it sure is thick now I just need a conditioning mower to help on dry time 2 years in a row we have raced to do hay so going to have to dry the hay down faster next year
yea conditioners are nice

Thank you i appreciate you taking the time to comment
Nice video and seeding. How many pounds of oats and alfalfa did you plant? Also, did you add any other grasses to your alfalfa? Thanks
3 bushel of oats and 15 pounds of alfalfa
if you don't cut it you can't bale it.waiting for rain you never get done. ...good luck..
Your exactly right.....
Looks real nice
thanks. hope it grows back well
With it being so hard to get hay dry due to humidity, why not chop it for silage? Or baleage?
dont own a chopper. not ready for a silage pile at the moment. and cant make baleage without a wrapper..... nobody has one of them around here... it made beautiful dry hay
Do you set your crispers differently for green feed?
i dont do any green feed
What is that broad leaf weed - what model is that tractor
Donald Ellett 7220. Magnum and tbere are a lot of weeds in this field. Keisha lamsquater mairstail velvet leaf
You must be able to open up the conditioner on the cutter as to not squish the milk out of the oats? My father in law tried cutting his oats with a haybine and the back end of the machine was pure white after
i can open them up but there was not any milk in the seed in this field yet ....
How many pounds of alfalfa and how many pounds of oats did you drill per acre?
