    I love how you describe seed dealers. I am a seed dealer myself, and I have always thought your smaller farmers are truly the ones who drive your business. Of course it’s fun to get a big guy, but the small guys talk. When you can offer service to everyone, even if it is one bag on a Sunday at 10pm then that’s truly service. Will be showing this video to others!

      Thanks what part of the world are you from? And what is your brand of seed you sell. Good luck to you in the up coming year

    I agree with you that all customers should be treated the same! When I farmed full time the dealer wouldn't come out and say "how u r doing " , but mr bto then the azz kissing began!
    Enjoyed the ride and conversation! Have a great day, evening, or night! Thanks

    We have a 1590 JD notill in 20' with the fertilizer and small seed box. Just started no tilling and already see improvement in soil quality especially earth worm activity. Just no tilled Timothy into wheat stubble this fall. Great video!

      these drills do a great job... thanks for commenting do you have dry fert box split box or liquid?

    • @lukusgray1031
      @lukusgray1031 5 лет назад

      @@tedkahler9738 it's a 60/40 split with dry fertilizer. It works really well for putting starter fertilizer with the seed. Also I agree with you 100% on your seed dealer relationship stick with who takes care of you. Keep up the good videos you got a new subscriber!

    That planter does a great job. We've also been strictly no till for about 20 years now as our soil is also very sandy and low in potassium and very acid which is why we don't work the soils. We also have to put down about 1.5 tons of lime a year/ha. We also use as little chemical nitrogen as possible and rather chicken manures and composts to try conserve the soil biology.

    • @tedkahler9738
      @tedkahler9738  7 лет назад +1

      we use liquid nitrogen on corn. not much way to get composts or chicken litter here at any reasonable price. Glad your doing no till.... To many people try it a year and give up!!

      THanks... I did some more custom stuff and they said plat it think... i suggested like 12 pounds.... they said ATEAST 15 if not closer to 20.... i said ok and carried on!!! LOL

      i beleave the soil matters and luck i like planting in the fall and no nurse crop, that is because we are dry here if the ground is sandy it comes up a whole lot better. just have to make sure weeds are all gone summer fallow it also,

    Thank you for all of these farming and ranching videos. I really enjoy them and am learning a lot.
    You mention how auto-steer allows you to focus on the process behind you, which is good, but it seems that you must still twist your body around to do that. Perhaps over a period of decades the twisting could cause joint problems (?).
    To avoid that, is it possible to fit a rotating seat in a farm tractor similar to those in backhoes, so that you can sit and face entirely backwards at will instead of twisting your spine around? Just a thought.

    • @tedkahler9738
      @tedkahler9738  6 лет назад

      I actually am small and agile enough i just turn sideways in my seat quite a bit. Also change what way you look back so your not always looking the same way helps as well. Most modern tractors do let the seat swivel around some but not all the way like a backhoe as you still need to be able to use the foot controls to maintain safe operation.

    Lazy ass Farmer LOL I love that drill and I don't know what we did with out GPS I know that I used to think 40acres was a big day seeding grain last year I seeded 80acres with a 14' drill and I had to fill the drill every 8 acres , it was a long day but I got that field done before the storm

      That's a days work Thank goodness for GPS makes a big difference in the dark. I was out at my brother in laws today to pick up Barley and he has 2 big airdrills and they've seeded 5000acres so far and I'm not in that world.

    That soil looks in to be great order especially as you described it as a heavy clay and you seem to put that down pretty well to no till planting - correct?
    A few questions please:
    1. Is that alfalfa seed innoculated and if so is that common practise?
    2. How do you adjust seed planting depth for both "normal, wet and bone dry" soil conditions?
    3. What speed are you drilling at so as not to experience coulter bounce?
    4. As the alfalfa seed is so small and the metering wheels are high up on the drill and your relying on gravity for the seed to fall to the soil how soon do you have to drop the drill in before you meet the last row of the end rows (1-2metres?) so as to get a full cover of the field at the ends?

    • @tedkahler9738
      @tedkahler9738  7 лет назад +2

      Ill do my best to answer your questions
      1. Yes that alfalfa seed is inoculated, Most seed companys do inoculate BUT some people dont like paying for the inoculate Most seed dealers say you get that much better germination using inoculate than not using it so i guess im not really sure if its the way to go or not.
      2. For oats and alfalfa I do not adjusts seeding depth.. I plant at .25-.5 inches. I try to have some alfalfa on top the ground (or its too deep) With alfalfa you can not plant it very deep at all so planting to moisture is not an option you have (very week seed coming out of the ground) For wet conditions i would wait tell better conditions could happen(only one chance to get it right)
      3. I am running at 7 mph. It is a smooth field BUT i do run more down pressure when planting alfalfa as it is planted so shallow you dont want the row to be bouncing out of the ground
      4 I make sure i leave the drill down in the ground tell im half a drill with over the planted end rows. Especially in alfalfa i do not want any skips if at all possible
      #5 Thanks for the questions i hope i answered them for you.. Do not hesitate to ask more if you have any!!

    Hey Ted, we just purchased a 1590 John Deere no-till drill and I was wondering if u had an tips to give me about properly using this machine and the main wear points on the machine. We are located in northeast nebraska and are trying to get into no-till and cover crops. We have stock cows and have heard about the great benefits of running stock cows on the cover crops

    • @tedkahler9738
      @tedkahler9738  6 лет назад

      Well your 1590 is very similar to my 1560 major wear points are the discs the seed boots and all the bushings. When no till into soybean ground is what i think is the hardest on the gauge wheels. I have videos of replacing bushings in my 1560 and also several videos of cover crop and cattle. Have any more questions you want to ask feel free

    • @tedkahler9738
      @tedkahler9738  6 лет назад

      I also forgot to mention the seed boot mount could also get worn out

    Is the 750 good for soy or should I go with someone else?

    • @tedkahler9738
      @tedkahler9738  6 лет назад

      The 750 is a decent drill i believe if its not wore out it will do a fine job. One big improvements in the newer drills are they changed the closing wheel on the back to make the bearings much better. they moved the bearing from wheel itself to the arm making it harder for dirt to get in them. If you find a 750 for the right price you can order an updated packing wheel assembly from shoup parts

    I went to Nu ag from pioneer, got tired of the ass kissing, when it's the dam well same product as anything else coming from Monsanto. Paying 250 a bag for seed corn to give the dealers brand new shops and equipment. Noone realizes theres a difference in the guy running over 500 acres trying to get as much in as he can vs the 80 to 300 acre owner.
