My husband and I go round and round on the best time to cut oats for balage! We are a dairy and do mix some peas in! I've cut early before but I got half the yield and more problems with high nitrates. I wanted to plant peas but we had a late spring and I didn't get everything done especially with staying so busy with the cows.

You're exactly right about field size. NW Texas/OK ,Kansas irrigated fields were amazing for a 18 yr old kid from PA ,used to fields ten acres and a lot under five,surrounded by woods ,a creek to cross on the field lane in the woods just to get to it . And usually point rows out the ass cause of its oddshape. But then saw the dry land fields of SW Colorado a few miles long was crazy to see.
Finally found a video that cut hay into lands instead of circle cutting. We use to cut 6 swaths around the outside then cut lands with straight rows for raking 3 into one. I miss farming, "But" I don't miss the work, LOL
When I combine oats and bale the straw, my cows usually eat almost all the straw and then I feed the oats to them. I'm not too smart sometimes. But this year I made it all into balage just after heading, and it has grown back and is starting to head again. I plan to graze it this fall.
In the past I swathed it a little green and fed the oats and the straw. A few years ago I cut and baled the oats twice but like you I cut them the first time early after heading.

That mower looks like it is doing a real good job. I am a Massey guy at heart. Always had NH hay equipment. Need to replace my 1412 in a few more years. I’m going to take a closer look at this mower. You like it? I saw video when you got it.
I love the mower, I like my NH equipment but I don't think you can beat the Hesston Discbine, I looked at lots of used mowers and found the Hesston mowers were less wore out on the cutter bed than the NH with the dry coupler between units, which might be different on the new NH mowers. I don't have dealer support from NH so I didn't even look at a new one.
It just take longer to dry the crop down with out a crimper, some guys prefer it. I like to crimp or condition the crop just so I can bale sooner , but I know some people that just use a swather and wait 2 weeks for it to be dry.
Yes the loader could be disconnected but I feed cattle everyday so I just keep it on. I will rake it 2 to 1 before I bale, when I think I'm a day away from baling I'll rake it in double swaths and let it finish drying .

That would be fun but you will have them planted before I'm done calving. Best part is I bought mine super cheap because it was just bin run. I've grown Morgan and they did really good but I haven't tried the haymaker, they are probably really good to get that name. We have good quality oats up here with heavy test weight, last years seed was 44lbs/bu . If you go North of me 10hrs they can grow oats that yield 180bu/acre, my neighbor got 130bu/acre on the seed I got.
haymaker are a forage/ silage oat. They mature later and if you get an early fall, you will have a bugger of a time getting them to dry down to combine. They get so heavy and thick takes time for them to dry down to bale as well.... morgan and mustang im told are far superior for greenfeed and combine.

I live in like the middle of the states. I see farmers planting oats and it will only get about a foot and a half to 2 feet max tall. Your oats so far have been the best oats I’ve seen yet. Not to many grow oats around here for feed.

I'm pleased with the oats, I've grown a bigger oat crop but this should dry better and hopefully it will make nice bales. Cows should enjoy it.

I have a friend that farms lots of land and he has one farm that he has 6 mile runs

The crimp helps it dry so you can bale sooner

It just take longer to dry the crop down with out a crimper, some guys prefer it. I like to crimp or condition the crop just so I can bale sooner , but I know some people that just use a swather and wait 2 weeks for it to be dry.

Last time I grew oats they where 6' tall and it was hard to cut them and then it took 2 weeks to dry so I like these better.
Should have left them to combine lots of straw!

They take less water than grass hay but they need fertilizer

Horses love it but if the oats are too mature the can get sick from it, too much energy
