Cutting, Raking, Baling, and Wrapping Oats for Hay

- Being as we are short on hay, we decided to cut our oats for hay instead of combining them. We take a quick look at cutting the oats, raking the oats, round baling them, and using our Anderson Bale Wrapper. Alan's dad brought over his 200 Allis Chalmers tractor to run the wrapper.
You guys should do a farm tour with a equipment tour. Love seeing all the videos and stuff you guys do. Thank you for all the hard work that goes into the farm and these videos.

Ladoga, WI. really liked the video of the old straw chopper. neat seeing that stuff work. sold our cows in 09. everyone has new boring equipment but older equipment and neat stuff like that made me subscribe. i bought a semi and im over the road now so yall have kept me entertained catching up on all the videos

Thanks for the great video. It was nice to see the whole process of cutting to wrapping. I think you made a wise decision to wrap your oat hay. I have a cousin who dairys near us. He baled about 130 triticale bales and made them dry. He then stacked them in his hay shed. Three weeks later his shed burned down. He lost all his bales, a skid loader, combine, and a cattle shed next door to the hay shed.

Interesting video. Have never seen this process for putting up oats for feed. I sure like that little round baler. Perfect for the smaller farmer. The big round bales are just too heavy for smaller loader tractors.

Man be glad that You got Crabgrass--Great summer grass-pasture. To many people get that Round Up Itis.
It makes good pasture, but it never grows where I can pasture it.
That's a nice AC 200. All of our bigger / older tractors are AC's. Newer / smaller are Kubota and New Holland. Looks like you need an engineering degree to fold and unfold that rake. 🎓 It looks like it does a good job for you though! That is a handy little baler and some nice hay. Thanks for sharing the video with us.

Old video I know, but do you have any problems with mice chewing holes in the wrap on the oat bales? I made some oat and pea bales and holy moly, the mice went crazy with them.
No I didn't have any trouble, but I fed them pretty quick, if they would have sat a lot time, they probably would have gotten into them.
@@trinitydairy years ago we made up a few racks of corn stalk bales thinking it would be great to bed calf huts with. We knew their was some down corn in it but didn't think much of it. The mice ate almost every single string off them bales, we ended up scooping them up and bedding barns with them! Ha

the people i used to milk for has a allis 175 and had a 200 also. the 200 ended up burning but the 175 had a hand and foot clutch. i never knew when to use which clutch and just in the barn to stack

Nice video showing all the steps. I've never used a single bale wrapper, just the inline. You mentioned you would reseed oats after you spray off the weeds. Would you be better off planting millet or sorghum? Something that grows well in the heat of summer.
I've never had much luck with millet or sorghum. My dad planted fall oats last year and it was a great yield.
I want to try sorghum this year yet, if I can get it planted. We are still quite wet.

I like that little baler. Didn’t know New Idea made balers for IH. Is that rake a 3 point model mounted on a caddie? It looks like an old Gehl, or am I wrong? Glad you were able to make some nice feed
Yeah, each side mounts on 3 point as a single rake,or both on the main frame can also go on the 3 point, but with the hills here the caddie works better. The brand of the rake is a Sitrex, but I think Gehl and H&S had the same thing.
Does the wrapper make a pre-set number of turns or does the operator control that.
It has a monitor that counts the turns, but the operator controls it with the hydrolics.
Will you get enough volunteer oats coming back to hold off spraying and reseeding?
Oats usually won't grow back good enough to harvest a second cutting, especially when they start to head out
No they don't usually grow back very well.
Do you wrap them so they can be stored outside in the elements Alan?

No, the wrap seals out the oxygen so they can ferment.

Yes, they seem to be fermenting good.

Usually a day or two, depending on the weather.

3 to 4 dollars a bale, depending on the price of the wrap.

Typically you combine the oats for the grain, and then bale the straw for bedding, but it also makes really good hay.
Would you be interested in a John Deere 4010 thats got a work master 880 loader on it and brand new rear rubber? It's not perfect but it would suite your operation more than mine I am looking to trade and or maybe sell.

Do you ever have a problem with raccoons tearing holes in the plastic?
I didn't when I used corn silage bags but a neighbor a couple miles away did.
Same thing here, we've never had an issue. My neighbor has trouble with deer ripping into his silage bag
Are you sure the spreading grass in the oat fields is crabgrass?
It sounds more like quack grass which was a major problem when I was growing up in central Minnesota before herbicides were used.
I also recall , years back, a farmer south of Duluth stating in a farm publication that he gave up the fight and started fertilizing his quack grass and cutting it early for hay.
This is crabgrass, I thought about cutting this for hay because the cows like it, but I can't on that field because of the contract I have with the state.
I like them hay bines conditioner they bust up them stems on hay better
Any complaints about the Anderson wrapper? Looking at one myself. Great video.
The only problem I have with it is the knife that cuts the wrap, I could only get it to cut about half the time, and if I had 5ft wide bales, sometimes they would catch the knife and put a hole in wrap, the 4ft bales would work fine, I just removed it, and just have one of the kids cut it.

what brand of bale wrap do you use?
I have used a few different brands over the years, but haven't noticed much difference, the brand I'm using here is called seven, it's made by a company called aspla in the EU.
That old soft core baler does pretty good with those damp oats. No need for a $50000 silage special baler. Approx. what moisture content were those oats?
Just guessing, I would say around 30percent

The 23 bales we're from the whole field, which is about 14 acres.
