Very interesting, thanks for doing it... happy flying!
The 4 screws are actually HEX 1.5 not Torx.
what is the purpose for that usb otg inside the goggles?
... and i'm wondering how to connect this goggles to liftoff? :)
I would love to see a teardown on the Fat Shark Recon HD goggles!
Yea I wanted to do this. It’s a different board I have seen an image off
Fantastic overview- thank you
The one transmission port makes me think that its data loss reaquisition request will be rather poor without a patch on that port. Especially for long range flights.
Exactly my thoughts too. Need the highest gain transmitting antenna for antenna 1
Depends on the amount of data it transmits and the protocol no? I mean ELRS does just fine for so many kilometers on a basic dipole antenna..
@@saidinesh5 There's a lot more data getting transmitted and potentially lost on a video link, compared to an RC control link. That transmit antenna could make or break, how well the signal holds up at more than 1km.. If DJI can make 13kms with a patch antenna. This better be as good, or it's not for me.
a common mod on these (and the avatar twin) has been to exchange antenna positions 1 and 3. 1 patch listening, patch transmitting.
Great to see they are well built!! Thank you Ian
Very well executed! I am very much just a pilot but I am starting to get alot more interested in how this amazing gear accomplishes certain tasks and Mads tech is the best place for anything fpv super tech! You are appreciate!
Next trying powering up both the DJI and the FatSnail googles and VTX's at the same time to see if they interfere with each other. I'm curious if the two systems will play nice with each other at the flying field.
That’s to come in the future.
I always say u r the best reviewer thank u.
I hope you will do a spectrum analysation for this system to compare it to dji. That could confirm that they use the same artosyn chip.
I will be soon.
The firmware confirms it already, though.
A great video Ian!
Would be great if they fit 2x transmitting antennas (omni and patch) and 2x receiving (omni and patch)
@1:25. They are not torq screws. They are actually the same 1.5mm Hexhead that would normally tighten/adjust camera angle on your drone. I Swapped out antenna 1, 3 Ufl connections so that #1 is facing out with a patch antenna connected. Super Easy! I had to pull the goggles apart a couple of times to fiddle with the ribbon cable for the left eye. The image was absent. Be careful! The ribbon cable is very sensitive. Overall, an excellent and very informative tech video.
looks like we can change those U.fl to rp-sma and swap them out for normal u.fl to sma
Impressive design of the hardware, thank you for the overview. What do we have on the SoC besides the model? How capable is it to handle "zero latency" video and compression needed to create a good image?
im pissed the fatshark version didnt come with antennas and whats worse is that they are RP-SMA
I will be switching out my ufl to rp-sma co-axle cables with standard SMA
I really want to get into digital and was really looking forward to the release of these goggles but am now second guessing them with all of the issues, would you suggest going with DJI or holding out for a few more months for bugs to be worked out? I really do like the form factor of the Avatars so I want desperately for them to be the next great thing, I know this is a hard question to answer and you probably get it all the time but I thought it was worth a shot it is a big purchase I will be stuck with for a long time, love the videos. Thank you
Minor thing, but those two ICs next to the Artosyn chip at 13:34 aren't flash. They're 4Gb Samsung DDR4 chips.
Thanks for all you do, Ian! Exciting times for us FPV pilots, to be sure. I’m enjoying DJI and grateful for the experience it’s given me thus far (queue shade). I’ve loved the image quality, reliability and simplicity. That said, I have mixed feelings about seeing myself type that statement just now (i.e. I use DJI but I’m not sure how I feel supporting them as a company). I am and have been rooting for anyone to be competition for them; really hoping for Avatar or HDZero to come around and make me jump ship to switch to their system. Not quite there yet but I think a lot of us are in a similar place and watching closely.
…In the interim though, I’ll be continuing to enjoy the comfy shade of the DJI system on anything big enough to carry it. Cheers mad!
With Caddx being a huge surveillance camera company with ties to the Chinese dictatorship, I think it’s hardly better than DJI in the end. (And Walksnail is just a shop front for what is actually Caddx.)
These are looking pretty good and I'm sure are gonna get even better with updates. But I'm with ya waiting for those hdzero goggles 🥽💯
@@leonie9248 - absolutely have no problems with Chinese tyranny and these components. What I do have problem with and we all should, this so called "1st world country" called Canada (read: Frozen Wasteland) has more tyranny than the rest of the world has ever seen.
@@leonie9248 It's not just about being Chineese - DJI is actively subverting our hobby in order to be the "only game in town" - working hand in hand with the FAA to squelch hobbyists and enable commercial drone airspace infrastructure. Your next firmware update will enable RID on your airunit. Cheers -
What size are the torx screws which secure the shell to the lens plate?
@MadRC Can you tell anything from the tracing or components of where that usb otg port is routed? Wondering if the hardware is capable of hdmi->usb video in and the walksnail team is just working on the software
No it’s debugging.
What is the length of the pigtails inside? Want to switch the RP-SMA to regular SMA
About 120mm
How do you break them down the rest of the way?
You said a mouth full when you said very delicate ribbon cables. Which these goggles seem to have more then their fare share of ribbon cables that seem to always cause some kind of problem with some age.
What is uart and i2c port stands for ?
just opened mine up i got 3 days ago and moved the tx port to one of the front smas. Hardest thing trying to put backtogether. Never doing it again
Hi Mads Tech if I am using only analog system. Should I root and install WTFOS on my dji fpv goggles V2. Would I be able to install custom fonts on osd.
Excuse for my stupid question: Is doing this void the warranty?
I'm a LHCP analog user, all of the antenna use SMA connector, is it a good idea to tear the goggles apart to change the the antenna connector into SMA?
I want to do the same. I do not think it is a stupid idea to change the RP-SMA connections to SMA. Antennas are too expensive IMO, if you already have a full compliment of SMA antennas, doing this would save quite a bit of money.
Excellent work, Ian! Thanks!!! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Hi Ian, do you remember what size torx bit these are? Mine are too short so I'll need to buy a torx screwdriver.
Did you find out?
@Federico yes, it turned out that mine were not torn, but just normal Allen head screws.
do you think they left the passwords default intentionally?
or do you think FatSnail will lock that down in a future update?
i know only time will tell, just something ive been wondering.
Yeah a DJI cloned design even if not precisely... (or someone else created the design and DJI used it as well) :)) RF section uses the same RF transceiver as DJI and only one of the DJI front end from sky (DJI uses 2 for transmission) and even has unpopulated on v1 the 2.4 g link as that transceiver is capable of 5.8 and 2.4. and obviously same soc. Code wise? :) well, I believe you can clone a thing without copying line to line anyway the secrecy of this product is not a desirable thing. What I can definitely say is that the PCB layout is definitely made by Fatshark engineers as it has all their particular designs written all over the board. :) Fatshark is definitely not happy when they see teardowns :))
Asking for help how to clean a walksnail lens in which there is small dirt ..
Did a test flight with mine , lost signal while landing didn't crash , got back home now the vtx won't stay connected , it was connecting for a bout 5 seconds and then black screen , now its not , when power up light flashing green the turns off and then solid red , no image
Shame that there is no AV in. Thats a total dealbreaker for me. I am using Analog, HDZero and DJI on my quads and i am waiting for a goggle that can do it all. Does anybody know if there is a chance for a standalone Walksnail receiver?
Same here. Complete dealbreaker.
Seems there would be a *theoretical chance* for that, technically. Realistically? I’d be pretty surprised. Hard to say how that would be in anyones best financial interests (other than yours, the consumer’s - obviously lol…). As with so many things, I feel like FPV goggles are still about the bottom line - the bottom dollar.
And I think the chances of any system being able to work with DJI VTx’s, other than DJI, are pretty much zero. It would be the most un-DJI move in DJI’s history to just open up to 3rd party compatibility (I still don’t count Caddx as actual 3rd party compatibility though - pretty clear who wore the businesspants in that relationship).
Walksnail said in a facebook post that they might release a standalone receiver. Not that i trust them.
If they do they would be back in the race for me. Want to use headtracker and do range then a standalone receiver / antenna tracker is needed
I ordered the fatshark dominator hd pre order from Rotor Riot all the way back in may and haven't received any updates or received them. Did they release news saying when they would ship out orders?
I would reach out to them and ask tbh they are fast on the coms
B interesting see what that USB can do
Ian will use it to create fire
what's the battery on the MoBo for? Same as my PC Modo?
Yea basically storing data like recording numbering ext.
My question is,will someone make a transmitter (controller) that will bind to this system, like the DJI FPV controller. That was nice to bind and fly
There is no RC system built into this at all.
Smash that like button!
conspiracy theory
Did they hold back the shipping of the VTX to avoid a bigger damage ?
They simply delayed the shipping for a few days which is better than everyone facing the desaster only JB had shown at least partitially with all these stutterers and hickups.
If they simply were aware that they would need 6 or 7 days for fixing the software or firmware then it would make a lot of sense to delay the VTX for a short (er) time just to fix the software and avoid the biggest 'oh my god I had to return the goggles cause they are unuseable'
They traded in a smaller damage (not the best for the reputation to shipping just 1 half of the system) for avoiding a far bigger wave or returns due to disappointment
end of conspiracy theory
I came up with this after watching JB's videos in particular the 'update' from last night for the third time where he said that he now would consider to get one after he had gotten the updates (regarding the huge stutters he that seem to have at least partially gone). And he also said that he would not have recommanded to get one before, so it looks for him like a suprisingly astonishing progress - at least for those who had bought one and will get the VTX now. At least for those in the US who had gotten their vtx or at least 1 guy I had found who had gotten it even though on a public holiday. I do not how cause here no parcel service is delivering on sundays or on public holidays, but US is the country where everything is possible even selling a drone before launch date.
And I guess all the reviewers did not touch this subject and avoided to show the real amount of jittery and stutters in their 'reviews' and JB seems to be relieved a lot after flying with that updated version.
Looks like a stone fall from his heart that finally the goggles had become at least useable.
And that makes sense too, cause if he had not touched all the details he had known back then and covered issues he had faced before then he would have a good reason to feel a lot better or relieved.
Of cause just pure speculation, but this time we had only 3 reviews and you can compare them easily in details and footage and for sure each one knows how to present the performance in better areas and avoiding those areas where djij would simply outperform the dominator by a lot.
And JB is a pretty smart guy so he would have thought a lot about what to tell and show and what not to mention at least on release day party time.
In this way he is a bit like dji as you said before: listen to what he is not saying
With that advice in mind I watched the whole JB dominator footage from launch day on again and again wondering why he finally felt so relieved cause a reviewer does not have to feel relieved if it he is the neutral guy with no interest or favor in any party / manufacturer / product.
It is just a feeling and I am no expert in the goggles world, just the average or far better below average consumer who sometimes enjoys to fly the Mavic 2 pro or a plane with an old goggle racing edition that met my needs back then (once they had released all the updates in april 2019).
But you can see how much his mind and feeling has shifted from the review focussing of what he could tell us to his habits from yesterday suddenly talking or mentioning things he had not talked before or emphasized so much, and those were weak spots of the dominators.
Anyhow: I will not get a dominator, orqa or hdzero cause I prefer the all in one solution from one manufacturer l got from dji even though maybe more expensive but over the years pretty reliable and not so disappointing . So DJI has to release FPV goggles 3 whatever that finally would support all former occusync drones from fpv drone over Air 2, Mini 2 and Mavic 3 to the next big thing they have in mind (except it is whoop which i do not like except the cheap Tello I enjoy from time to time in winter flying indoors in a huge barn).
And of cause: well presented tear down and analysis, but I can not wait to hear your first impression of the system in the shipping state without the update and how poorly it behaves or not cause that might give an explanation why JB was pretty emotional after the update flight.
Hi. i'm make some test - i;m close by hand 1 antenna and signal fully dropped - why this - googles have 4 antennas but using only one? Very bad situation - because i'm make many tests and this is true! Only one first antenna using for to determine the quality of the link and when the connection between the transmitter and the glasses disappears - the video link disappears completely and no matter what is installed on the other 3 antennas - super patches or something else - it's all useless!
It is not very clear to me what screws are on the goggles... What screwdriver do I need?
They are torx.
@@MadRC thank you very much 🙌🏽
@@DanielBarrios83 Correction: they are Hex 1.5mm NOT torx.
Nice and simple design with minimal PCB's. Definitely had space for more IO, but I assume this was dropped in favor of cost and the desire to lock users into this system exclusively. Thanks for doing the tear down!
are fatshark and walksnail cameras and goggles interchangable?
Yes, there is no Fatshark VTX. Just goggles.
@@MadRC got it, thanks!
Nice hardware but a lot of empty space inside. Can be done into slim size and more features. Even the motherboard has plenty of empty space. We hope the next design will be more tidy up and slim. Nice teardown.
The DJI Goggles 2 actually can record video with an air unit and vista, you have to start the recording in the goggles before taking off, but the video looks in slow motion, I hope DJI can fix it in new updates.
oh hey im the first comment, i should use this unique opportunity to say something helpful or profound.

Do they not believe in real time clocks? It's pretty infuriating not having a date and time stamp on your videos in 2023.
Понимаю что у вас ещё нету видеопередатчика, но это всё выглядит как высасывания контента из пальца, только ради того, чтобы выпустить очередное видео с громким названием ЖИРНАЯ АКУЛА, ради просмотров

Lol dude there’s no other tear down videos yet. What do you want? Such a ridiculous claim. Ian makes content that people want to see.
