same here. 3 digital systems out and none of it checks all the boxes that analog can do beside the image quality. but image quality is not everything for Fpv.
Reviewers hedging bets and recommending this system based on its *potential* seems inappropriate to me. At this point in time, this system is simply not as solid as DJI, is more expensive, offers lesser video quality, uses a non-standard mounting pattern, and has higher latency. If at some point in the future the situation has improved, fine. Compare the systems again and make an updated recommendation then. Not an accusation, by the way - I found your review to be honest and fair. There are other reviews out there. I think in any case, for someone completely on the fence it only makes sense to wait a bit longer to see what DJI's next iteration offers.
Agreed. Mr Steele's review felt like he just didn't want to be honest about how bad it is - maybe out of loyalty, as he was among the few who got an early review set. I cringed a lot while watching his review, tbh.

I thought that this system has lower latency? But agreed, seems like DJI has a more developed product, with a huge adoption rate and manufactures offering many BNF options.

"compression" is more than just bitrate + codec, pretty clear they did not take the time to dial in all the variables here and that's a bummer... I think it could get better via updates, but that's an expensive gamble especially when there's a product on the market that's better, less expensive, and has widespread adoption
Damn. Like a good 75% of this flight has less effective resolution than analog. My hdzero blows this away without even having to pull out my dji system lol
True story. I felt the same flying it at rampage that my HDZero looked better in the goggles. I wasn’t sure if it was because it was limited to only 25mW though when I flew it but here it looks like it isn’t doing very well either.

Haven't got to use it yet (new to all this just starting).. but it seems HDZero is hard core community.. where DJI and FatShark seem iffy and I feel like HDZero is going to be the better of the 3 in the near term and going forward.

I really hope that this compression artefacts and bitrate issues will be sorted out by updates. At this moment (At first glance of few videos from Steele and Bardwell) I gather rather uncertainty and bad feelings on usability of this technology in a fast paced scenarios ( freestyle and racing ). For me at least, the 50 mb bitrate in DJI is more useful in 720p goggles than blurry and almost unusable in flight 1080p. I kinda regret now, that I’ve placed an order on impulse yesterday for an Avatar goggles and few vtxs… I really hope that compression and bitrate will improve by some updates. For now, I’d rather stick to DJI and wait.
It is displaying similar issue Dji had over 2 years ago. Give it 6 months to a year and I believe this will be the goto for the best visual experience goggle. Hdzero for the latency cock riders
I just saw someone saying the latest firmware release 21.22.4 makes a big difference in the blurry looking video feed and now looks on par with DJI. So I hope that’s true because I also have a Walksnail kit on order and I’m kinda regretting it based on this video. Apparently mine has already shipped so I can’t cancel it
Aaaaand.. Now 2023 and latest 33.x FW have very very blury vidoes! Caddx again throws people. Terrible friezes are some kind of constant lags - in short a hat!
Not having a standard USB port on the VTX is a bit of a strange thing to do in this modern age. Sure they include a cable, albeit a short one, but still I find it odd that such a "premium" product has a plasticky JST style plug for the USB connection.
hdzero as of now is looking more and more tempting. if avatar comes out with a modular then you could have HDZERO, avatar, analog, video in would also make the hdzero goggles a home entertainment system could hook up a xbox to them. and its going to be cheaper for a googles that's a all in one system hmmmmm

There is a lot of speculation at the moment that DJI will drop the V3 goggles and Avatar cinedrone in the next quarter. With 4 Vista quads I will be waiting to see what DJI and Caddx do.
Still rock my v1 from launch day (solid and reliable) and have v2 set in the box unused except for the last good firmware update. Hoping that a big stock of vtxs will get me through atleast the next 3 years. I will pick up hdzero for micros if they are even remotely good.

Excellent job on the review its nice to see a honest one unlike RR who tried to pass off the onboard DVR as goggle footage. It's sad to see we still only have 2 viable digital fpv systems. Guess fatshark should of stayed with HDzero.

Seeing it still look this bad at 1200mw makes me more concerned. Hopefully they can fix it in firmware updates, but I'm happy with my constant compression with HDZero right now.
I just bought all in on HDZero.. and I suspect with their up coming goggles, and extreme activity in the community.. they are going to offer more/better updates, etc. I think for now my HDZero + Sky 04x are a good combo and we'll see what the goggles bring end of year.. hopefully on par 1080P OLED displays, with 1watt+ capability.

Honestly, I might just prefer the worse image quality of analog over this. Yes, over all analog might look worse, but there aren't these huge blocks of blur. In your initial review video, there was a scene where the bottom of some poles were completely obstructed by blur. And in this video at 6:04 you only see the gap between the trees at the last moment. Correct me if I'm wrong, but both of those things would have been more visible with analog, I think.
You're not wrong. This is easily the worst digital system. It's dji or hdzero. RR is falsely advertising low latency (same with steele) because fatsharks main concern isn't dji, it's HDzero. Notice the shills are all, not only falsely claiming that the latency is static like analog (in reality its way worse than dji) and constantly repeating themselves that this is now the only other digital option other than dji knowing full well HDzero is gaining alot of popularity and the HDZERO goggles are coming. This product was rushed out and over promised performance

Hi JB, one thing you didn't address yet is how the MSP OSD performs. During the launch it aal looked a bit buggy, has that been fixed? I'm also curious how it works with INAV or ArduPilot. The osd on HDZero is quite laggy on those firmwares so I wonder how it works with Walksnail.
When you flew the parking garage the latency was hitting 1000+ it's definitely dropping packets. Almost like there is a bug in re-transmission. This is why you don't pre-order. Would cause me to return it if this was the initial experience.
A bug? Or just a bad performer? Latency was going high all the time. Average on last fw floors was bouncing between 100ms and 200ms for entire floors. That's not a retransmission bug. Also a retransmission bug would look like audience mode. This is clearly the compression, bitrate and encoder doing a bad job
This is a shame. I was hoping it would be slightly better than dji, but was confident it would be at least as good as dji. I can feel your frustration through the flight... it's rare that you finish a video without a proper outro. Fingers crossed they can fix this with a firmware update.

I dont know, I just think it is another copy of DJI system like CADDX (many similarities, someone wants a piece of cake too) DJI seems to be still better and relaible. But will see the may improve fast since it is brand new. And I love to see real review no only sweet talks about the product but also its downsides every product have some.
Hey Joshua, new to FPV. Ended up buying the tiny hawk 2 freestyle. I’m a bit confused to why it’s not turning on. I plugged in my battery’s that I ordered which are the 550mAH URUAV 80/160C (-3.8-2.09Wh) and a small spark happened. There’s no beeping chime when I turn the drone on now and it blinks blue 5 times, green 4 times, red once, and then repeats that for a second time. Sorry for the long message, just curious if you or anyone else could help me.
Could you have accidentally plugged the battery in backwards? If there was a spark and then the FC won't turn on, it seems like the FC died one way or another. If you bought it new, go to Emax and ask for support.
At this point I don't see any point in moving from DJI FPV to this system unless you want to be an unpaid beta tester. I'm sure it will get better. That said, ZeroHD seems to be a step ahead of Walksnail/Avatar with a better quality picture along with a more favorable failure mode, and VTX in multiple size formats.
Obviously WalkSnail/FatShark have a long way to go to finish this product. FatSharks image quality, stability and latency does not convince me to switch. Of course this is (somehow) better than analog - but DJI's stability and image quality still rules. I hope that DJI sticks with th V2 for some more months because a successor would mean that they drop support for the older goggles. Community support is the only thing today that speaks for FatShark. So just give them 6-12 months and these goggles may finally meet their expectations. Joshua - thank you very much for your unbiassed reviews. Keep up your good work!
Ive seen older DJI DVR footage where the blurryness was only on the left and right taking up 2/3 of the screen and it maintained perfect clarity in a strip down the center 100% of the time. I wonder if that is something that can be easily done with a firmware update.
im still using the dji v1 and I'm happy with it. if this new system can do what the dji did with updates this could be an amazing goggle. only thing that scars me with this system is I don't know much about walksnail and how much money they have. as much as I don't like dji I love them lol. dji has hundreds of millions of dollars backing them. how much money does walksnail have to pump out updates. now its just the waiting game for me. if it had video in and I could use them as a computer monitor id order them now.
DJI's yearly profits are in 10 figures. 100 million is pocket change for them. Walksnail is basically a rebrand of Caddx, the company that can't even make an analog camera without dust on the sensor. Partnership with DJI opened a few doors for them though, and they have other companies manufacturing this system for them.
JB I'm confused; praise abounded in Fat Shark Dominator tryout videos a while back and RotorRiot (June 29) are showing CLEAN (uninfected?) 720P and 1080P video! Is this video 'infection' (exzema/x-ma?) a product of the 1200mW hack? Does your video still have x-ma (='eczema') running at 720P?
I bought a pair anyway! Like I said before my wife has 40 pairs of shoes , some never been worn , why can I have 10 pair of goggles even if there no good yet! Hopefully firmware updates fix these issues. I really just bought for my homemade fpv cockpit because it has HDMI out where as I fly mainly long range fixing
It would also have been nice to know if this system interferes as badly with others as DJI does. That's a pretty big issue for lots of people who like to fly with others... And does it also work as badly with race timing equipment? I'm sure the answer to both those questions is yes, though... 🥺
In the RR video Drew won't even say the word DJI. He refers to "other system" in his comments. All RR pilots will now be required to use this system and will ditch DJI.
Are there any other sources for the 1200mw and channel mods. The links on fatsharks page don't work. They just take you to a new page with either a 1 or a 2 at the top left corner.

I downloaded the zip and extracted and copied, and I also right clicked on the files and saved as. Still the power is grayed out. Did they disable this? How did the dji goggles look on launch day? I didn’t purchase my dji goggles until many firmware updates were dropped and 50mb mode was implemented. Is this a timing constraint issue in the design or is this a bug of some sort? The most important question is “Can these issues be fixed with firmware updates?” I put my preorder in with a handful of vtx’s after Rampage. I’ll purchase dji v3 as well. Spend that money baby.
People saying dji looked bad at first are coping. The reason dji got better after updates is ONLY cause they added 50mbps mode. 25mbps in Joshua's garage comparison and backyard comparison where dji is doing way bettr even without focus mode helping, is exactly what 25mbps mode looked on launch. Same with latency. The only performance gain you'll get on on this system is when they release 50mbps mode, however, just as 25mbps lost to dji 25mbps, 50mbps will also be worse than dji 50mbps which is already struggling with grass and branches in certain locations. This system is completely inferior outside of usb/hdmi out and msp osd
I am sure DJI have something "new" that will yet again blow all competition out the water. The reasons I say this is because.. 1 Look at the platform DJI cine drones available and wont be long before we have 4k at least with very low latency for racing and freestyle pilots. 2 DJI passed on to Caddx the FPV air units and why would they if they dont have better to come? 3 I think DJI are also laughing at smaller companies that are now attempting to replicate the V1 and V2 and when said companies finally get it right ,the DJI will strike with the new kit. This will then decimate smaller companies as people will want the best as usual. The Chinese are best at copying but this time the boot is on the other foot,the reverse tactics also work.

Great review! The best advice for sure is for people to Wait for the DJI v3. Don’t rush in to buying this products that is clearly not a industry leading. Fat shark is to so slow to keep up and the evidence is here. They present a product with already out dated technology. I will be very surprised if anyone will buy this after seeing that it’s is not even as good as the now ‘old’ DJI v2… And that for an even more expensive price. I am not even sure how fatshark will even survive if they are not competing or trying to lead the industry. That is for me the big question, how much life is left in fatshark?? Atleast I know dji will be here for a while longer.
DJI V2 pretty much only added 2.4ghz support for their drone. So really we're talking about v1 2019 tech being better. However, I do somewhat expect Fatshark/Avatar to become viable once 50Mbit and a new camera comes around. I ain't buying before it's fixed though. And I only hold out slim hope that v3 will be useful to us. Has anyone seen a standalone air unit,..not attached to their new drone?

Everything went well except for the 1200mw text file. I’ve tried this several different ways and the display only shows 700mw. Is that right? Or should it read 700 but mean 1200mw? I’m going to send my question to FS. Was just hoping I could get it sorted faster here? Thx!

I asked if it was more or less than 1200mw. He said less? I asked if the 1200mw mod gave the system more than 700mw. He said less?
I think a good video would be to show it when it just completely fails. Is it like DJI and pixelated then black out or does it get all snowy first? Do you get any warning at all? It’s progress, but I think I am going to run all of DJI stuff into the grave before I invest. It doesn’t appear to be stellar just yet.
I cannot justify getting this system at all. It does still seem un finished. The ground smearing into one blob is horrible. DJI when ir was first released at 25mbps and 700mw, it kills that picture. 1080hd on those goggles is a joke.

Nope, not at all. The reason latency is variable is because it IS retransmitting. Look at dji audience mode and the issue isn't bitrate and water color textures. It's that you'll see actual square blocks of missing or damaged data. The damaged data isn't necessarily low texture, but not accurate in placement on the frame, or frozen without motion etc. This on the other hand is purely loss of textures even with full bit rate, line of sight. Also in the garage video latency o. Dji was average 29ms at the end and peaked at like 80ms on spikes. The fatsnail was bouncing consistently from 100ms-200ms the last few floors especially at the end.
Wow... they really have messed it right up. I feel bad for those who pre-ordered. Hopefully they can fix it in a fw update... but I'd be pissed for being sold a product at full price only to be a beta tester. Not cool Fatsnail.
My thoughts exactly: who wants to pay a premium over DJI just to be a beta tester on a sus product. I’m just getting started with fpv after dipping my toes in the drone world with a DJI mini se for a cheap way to find out if this is something I might like long term and I do love the hobby. Interestingly, I asked mr. Steele in the comments yesterday from his release video about which way he would go in my situation as a noob buying my first pair of goggles and he simply said ‘you can’t go wrong with the DJI.’ I thought that was a very honest answer vs the fluff in the release video he put out yesterday. I’m going with either DJI or HDZero and taking a hard pass on this fat shark crapola.

+1 - add say RunCam 4 4K Camera and onboard DVR and you have analogue with 4K video playback...

@@Fpvpilot928 They claim lower latency, but Joshua did tests with highspeed camera and came out at 25 ms, not 19-21 ms.

they use the newer h265 compression instead of h264, maybe that has something to do with it. h256 compression has a higher compression rate.

Sticking with my DJI V1 goggles and air units, from what I've seen. Keeping my fingers crossed that the root hack leads to full OSD someday.

Maybe its the medicine talking but id totally watch a 20 minute relaxation video of the nature sounds in bardwells yard.
HDZero looks good in comparison. The resolution is lower, but it doesn't reduce uniform grassy surfaces to an indistingushable smudge.

Honestly, I might just prefer the worse image quality of analog over this. Yes, over all analog might look worse, but there aren't these huge blocks of blur. In your initial review video, there was a scene where the bottom of some poles were completely obstructed by blur. And in this video at 6:04 you only see the gap between the trees at the last moment. Correct me if I'm wrong, but both of those things would have been more visible with analog, I think.
You're not wrong. This is easily the worst digital system. It's dji or hdzero. RR is falsely advertising low latency (same with steele) because fatsharks main concern isn't dji, it's HDzero. Notice the shills are all, not only falsely claiming that the latency is static like analog (in reality its way worse than dji) and constantly repeating themselves that this is now the only other digital option other than dji knowing full well HDzero is gaining alot of popularity and the HDZERO goggles are coming. This product was rushed out and over promised performance

Hi JB, one thing you didn't address yet is how the MSP OSD performs. During the launch it aal looked a bit buggy, has that been fixed? I'm also curious how it works with INAV or ArduPilot. The osd on HDZero is quite laggy on those firmwares so I wonder how it works with Walksnail.

When you flew the parking garage the latency was hitting 1000+ it's definitely dropping packets. Almost like there is a bug in re-transmission. This is why you don't pre-order. Would cause me to return it if this was the initial experience.
A bug? Or just a bad performer? Latency was going high all the time. Average on last fw floors was bouncing between 100ms and 200ms for entire floors. That's not a retransmission bug. Also a retransmission bug would look like audience mode. This is clearly the compression, bitrate and encoder doing a bad job
This is a shame. I was hoping it would be slightly better than dji, but was confident it would be at least as good as dji. I can feel your frustration through the flight... it's rare that you finish a video without a proper outro. Fingers crossed they can fix this with a firmware update.

I dont know, I just think it is another copy of DJI system like CADDX (many similarities, someone wants a piece of cake too) DJI seems to be still better and relaible. But will see the may improve fast since it is brand new. And I love to see real review no only sweet talks about the product but also its downsides every product have some.
Can you do a Long Range distance test to see if they are different from the DJIs over 13km away?

Hey Joshua, new to FPV. Ended up buying the tiny hawk 2 freestyle. I’m a bit confused to why it’s not turning on. I plugged in my battery’s that I ordered which are the 550mAH URUAV 80/160C (-3.8-2.09Wh) and a small spark happened. There’s no beeping chime when I turn the drone on now and it blinks blue 5 times, green 4 times, red once, and then repeats that for a second time. Sorry for the long message, just curious if you or anyone else could help me.
Could you have accidentally plugged the battery in backwards? If there was a spark and then the FC won't turn on, it seems like the FC died one way or another. If you bought it new, go to Emax and ask for support.

At this point I don't see any point in moving from DJI FPV to this system unless you want to be an unpaid beta tester. I'm sure it will get better. That said, ZeroHD seems to be a step ahead of Walksnail/Avatar with a better quality picture along with a more favorable failure mode, and VTX in multiple size formats.
Obviously WalkSnail/FatShark have a long way to go to finish this product. FatSharks image quality, stability and latency does not convince me to switch. Of course this is (somehow) better than analog - but DJI's stability and image quality still rules. I hope that DJI sticks with th V2 for some more months because a successor would mean that they drop support for the older goggles. Community support is the only thing today that speaks for FatShark. So just give them 6-12 months and these goggles may finally meet their expectations. Joshua - thank you very much for your unbiassed reviews. Keep up your good work!
Ive seen older DJI DVR footage where the blurryness was only on the left and right taking up 2/3 of the screen and it maintained perfect clarity in a strip down the center 100% of the time. I wonder if that is something that can be easily done with a firmware update.

im still using the dji v1 and I'm happy with it. if this new system can do what the dji did with updates this could be an amazing goggle. only thing that scars me with this system is I don't know much about walksnail and how much money they have. as much as I don't like dji I love them lol. dji has hundreds of millions of dollars backing them. how much money does walksnail have to pump out updates. now its just the waiting game for me. if it had video in and I could use them as a computer monitor id order them now.
DJI's yearly profits are in 10 figures. 100 million is pocket change for them. Walksnail is basically a rebrand of Caddx, the company that can't even make an analog camera without dust on the sensor. Partnership with DJI opened a few doors for them though, and they have other companies manufacturing this system for them.

JB I'm confused; praise abounded in Fat Shark Dominator tryout videos a while back and RotorRiot (June 29) are showing CLEAN (uninfected?) 720P and 1080P video! Is this video 'infection' (exzema/x-ma?) a product of the 1200mW hack?

I bought a pair anyway! Like I said before my wife has 40 pairs of shoes , some never been worn , why can I have 10 pair of goggles even if there no good yet! Hopefully firmware updates fix these issues. I really just bought for my homemade fpv cockpit because it has HDMI out where as I fly mainly long range fixing

Are there any other sources for the 1200mw and channel mods. The links on fatsharks page don't work. They just take you to a new page with either a 1 or a 2 at the top left corner.
Those are the files. You're downloading the files and displaying them in your browser. Right-click the link and "save as" and it will download the file.
@@JoshuaBardwell I'm having the same problem. I was able to unlock the additional channels, but no dice on the upgraded power. I downloaded the zip and extracted and copied, and I also right clicked on the files and saved as. Still the power is grayed out. Did they disable this? With no antennas on the goggles, flying 50m away behind a light shrub I am losing connectivity, help sir!

How did the dji goggles look on launch day? I didn’t purchase my dji goggles until many firmware updates were dropped and 50mb mode was implemented. Is this a timing constraint issue in the design or is this a bug of some sort? The most important question is “Can these issues be fixed with firmware updates?” I put my preorder in with a handful of vtx’s after Rampage. I’ll purchase dji v3 as well. Spend that money baby.
People saying dji looked bad at first are coping. The reason dji got better after updates is ONLY cause they added 50mbps mode. 25mbps in Joshua's garage comparison and backyard comparison where dji is doing way bettr even without focus mode helping, is exactly what 25mbps mode looked on launch. Same with latency. The only performance gain you'll get on on this system is when they release 50mbps mode, however, just as 25mbps lost to dji 25mbps, 50mbps will also be worse than dji 50mbps which is already struggling with grass and branches in certain locations. This system is completely inferior outside of usb/hdmi out and msp osd

I am sure DJI have something "new" that will yet again blow all competition out the water.
The reasons I say this is because..
1 Look at the platform DJI cine drones available and wont be long before we have 4k at least with very low latency for racing and freestyle pilots.
2 DJI passed on to Caddx the FPV air units and why would they if they dont have better to come?
3 I think DJI are also laughing at smaller companies that are now attempting to replicate the V1 and V2 and when said companies finally get it right ,the DJI will strike with the new kit.
This will then decimate smaller companies as people will want the best as usual.
The Chinese are best at copying but this time the boot is on the other foot,the reverse tactics also work.

Great review! The best advice for sure is for people to Wait for the DJI v3. Don’t rush in to buying this products that is clearly not a industry leading. Fat shark is to so slow to keep up and the evidence is here. They present a product with already out dated technology. I will be very surprised if anyone will buy this after seeing that it’s is not even as good as the now ‘old’ DJI v2… And that for an even more expensive price. I am not even sure how fatshark will even survive if they are not competing or trying to lead the industry. That is for me the big question, how much life is left in fatshark?? Atleast I know dji will be here for a while longer.
DJI V2 pretty much only added 2.4ghz support for their drone. So really we're talking about v1 2019 tech being better. However, I do somewhat expect Fatshark/Avatar to become viable once 50Mbit and a new camera comes around. I ain't buying before it's fixed though. And I only hold out slim hope that v3 will be useful to us. Has anyone seen a standalone air unit,..not attached to their new drone?
@@rcrdps8144 there's plenty of proof of O3 Air Unit existing, what's slightly concerning is there doesn't seem to be any proof of O3 Air Unit Lite. Hopefully that will just launch later, like "Vista" (original Air Unit Lite) did.

Everything went well except for the 1200mw text file. I’ve tried this several different ways and the display only shows 700mw. Is that right? Or should it read 700 but mean 1200mw? I’m going to send my question to FS. Was just hoping I could get it sorted faster here? Thx!

I asked if it was more or less than 1200mw. He said less? I asked if the 1200mw mod gave the system more than 700mw. He said less?
I think a good video would be to show it when it just completely fails. Is it like DJI and pixelated then black out or does it get all snowy first? Do you get any warning at all? It’s progress, but I think I am going to run all of DJI stuff into the grave before I invest. It doesn’t appear to be stellar just yet.
I cannot justify getting this system at all. It does still seem un finished. The ground smearing into one blob is horrible. DJI when ir was first released at 25mbps and 700mw, it kills that picture. 1080hd on those goggles is a joke.
What about the Avatar VRX? Same process and files as the goggles?

Likely haven't implemented frame retransmissions and thus are feeding corrupted data into the encoder. Basically, DJI audience mode.
Nope, not at all. The reason latency is variable is because it IS retransmitting. Look at dji audience mode and the issue isn't bitrate and water color textures. It's that you'll see actual square blocks of missing or damaged data. The damaged data isn't necessarily low texture, but not accurate in placement on the frame, or frozen without motion etc. This on the other hand is purely loss of textures even with full bit rate, line of sight. Also in the garage video latency o. Dji was average 29ms at the end and peaked at like 80ms on spikes. The fatsnail was bouncing consistently from 100ms-200ms the last few floors especially at the end.

My thoughts exactly: who wants to pay a premium over DJI just to be a beta tester on a sus product. I’m just getting started with fpv after dipping my toes in the drone world with a DJI mini se for a cheap way to find out if this is something I might like long term and I do love the hobby. Interestingly, I asked mr. Steele in the comments yesterday from his release video about which way he would go in my situation as a noob buying my first pair of goggles and he simply said ‘you can’t go wrong with the DJI.’ I thought that was a very honest answer vs the fluff in the release video he put out yesterday. I’m going with either DJI or HDZero and taking a hard pass on this fat shark crapola.
