i think making fun of someones appearance is the lowest of a low. Bella did a great job of capturing Ellie's attitude and spunk and she didn't even have that much screen time in this episode. Even the way she kicked the food tray was perfect.
After spending a whole decade with a character, i could understand some people having an issue with who they choose to portray her, but actually making fun of her looks is definitely a different thing. I'm glad she's satisfying you as Ellie, though. That means they casted correctly
Joel does listen to Tess. She's the only person that he is willing to listen to because she is literally the only person he truly trusts.

you might be interested in the official podcast that they made, it has troy baker, neil druckmann and craig mazin talking about the episode (without spoilers to future episodes), and it's all about how they made the show and the decisions they made in adapting it from the game.
It's also pretty clear that craig mazin absolutely loved the game, and one of the stories they talk about is how when he and neil first met up for lunch, neil asked him how he would adapt the game to tv (this was before they even agreed to make it together) and craig said they could just go across the street (to HBO or Sony i think) and "I tell them i want that to be my next project and we make it my next project", and that's what they did.

I don't get why some people are so hard on Belle. She encapsulated the character of Ellie so well. Yeah she looks different but so does every character minus Marleen, as that is actually the same actor. Also the actress who plays Sarah is Thandiwe Newton's daughter. Makes sense why she was so good.

i don’t think craig mazin was saying that character death would be more impactful in the show. he made the pixels comment speaking about killing an npc that’s there to move the story along. great reaction!
If that's the case, I can understand that. I took it like caring for (important character) deaths in the game was impractical because it's just a game & the show will be better. But thinking about it, the view you expressed makes more sense. Thanks!
@@JustSumBLACKGuy Not sure if you've listened to the podcast yet, but Craig clarified some of the positions you seemed iffy on. He didn't seem to be talking about the impact of important character deaths, he used an example of the guy getting shot in the street for being infected, that outright violence in the street like that is a bit more palatable in video game form than in the show, as to make the live action version of that where there would need to be blood and gore and people around in the street screaming/crying etc and it just completely changes the tone more than it does in the game in his opinion, like random NPC's getting run over in GTA has much less of an impact than an extra being hit by a car in a live action show, and needs to be timed appropriately because it has a much more significant impact on the viewer when it may not be wanted in that moment.
He also mentioned about Bella and her playing the game, and he made a point that him and Neil as the showrunners and directors know what they need out of the performances to capture the Ellie that they want, and it is their job as directors to convey that information to actors to get the appropriate performance out of them. The actor's job is to simply perform the scene for the director, and he wanted to be able to convey what he wanted with Ellie to Bella, and avoid her having preconcieved notions sub-consciously imitating things from Ashley Johnson outside of their directing.
Marlene is played by the same actress, Merle Dandridge, who did the voice and motion for the game. Jeffrey Pierce played Tommy and he was the radio operator

I love that Neil was involved it it, Gustavo was involved, even the actress who played Marlene is the same as in the game... how perfect can it get??? They have to change stuff to make the flow easier to watch on TV, but I agree, everything is so amazing so far

Once I saw the co creator and writer of the games (Neil druckmann) wrote the show and directed an episode, I knew it'd be good.
Lol See, I hadn't known that prior because I stayed away from all details. If I did, I wouldn't have started the video so apprehensive 😂
I was actually really impressed with this episode, they really put in a lot of work in to remain faithful to the original source material while adding stuff of their own to fill in what the game left out because a tv format and game format are gonna prioritize something over the other, they both work towards the same goal and I'm really enjoying seeing this from this 1-episode, also I have zero issues with a character's appearance not matching up with the actors I care way more about how good the actor is and how good they portray the characters and so far I love it. Bella does Ellie's role perfect IMO which is wild considering they never seen the game or played it.
Tess so far best character for me, and also those clicker noises at the end of the episode, foreshadowing their appearance as the group head off towards abandoned buildings got me hype.
Yess I agree. They did do a great job with expanding the story, especially in the beginning. They opened the show PERFECTLY. Establishing characters and relationships didn't seem forced at all. I don't agree about Ellie, though. To me, she seems way too rude and unlikable rn. I've never NOT liked Ellie in the games. I get the feeling like shes trying too hard to be edgy. I'm missing the fun/witty aspect of her, but this was only one episode. I'll expand on those thoughts in my next reaction. But I look forward to seeing more fr. I think we'll see more concrete of Ellie, even though I do like her character and I think it makes sense why she's unlikable and rude (She's been held against her will and forced to go with people she doesn't know) but what I'm hoping for is a change, especially between Ellie and Joel and their development.
It's only 1-episode so far so it's hard to tell, but I think they're heading in the right direction I'm just hoping it maintains that quality as the story unfolds, on one hand I can emphasize with them because it's gonna be a constant balancing act on what they remain faithful to and what they decide to give more on, the key trying not to damage one over the other.
Episode 1's opening was a great way of exposition all the intel needed at that stage and really set the tone of the episode, even though I was a little hurt the "She's a kid." line wasn't in the episode...but that'll be obviously because of stuff like time restraints, the episode being 1 hour and 20 minutes they needed to cut small details like that especially when they're attempting to add and give more detail to major parts of the story.
But yup only time will tell if they can maintain the quality, I'm gonna give Bella more of a chance due to the little actual time we see of Ellie but I find it more or less perfect.

All valid points and views. I just can't imagine this Ellie being upset & offended by Joel and running off sad. I see her as too much of an asshole right now, but YES, it's only one episode. That's why I'm still going in with an open mind. They have ALOT on their plate when it comes to the development of these character relationships, so i won't judge too harshly. Bella just has a very instinct look that doesn't mesh well with Ellie for me but I'm more critical of the portrayal than anything. & Unfortunately, I have seen Train to Busan when it first released. It is my favorite Zombie movie of all time and I show people the movie every chance I get to see their reactions, so I won't be doing a reaction to that. I felt the exact same way, the ONLY problem I have with this is Ellie looks nothing like the actress BUT she is a good actor and captured Ellie's spunk/attitude so far...
None of the actors look like their game characters. Joel, Tess, Tommy, Sarah so why does Ellie have to? She certainly acts like Ellie and has the early attitude. They really don’t get on with her at first but you know that will change.

If you close your eyes you can hear Bella sound just like Ellie in the games. I think they casted her for her voice and she got Ellie’s personality down. They probably could of gotten someone to look more like Ellie, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they had Ellie’s voice and personality down. So they went with someone who had the personality traits instead of someone looking like her. They saw 100 people for the role of Ellie. And giving how great the show is so far. I trust their decision.
I trust their decision as well, it's not like I have someone in mind who could've been better. I'm just not sold yet, but I'm sure we'll see more of her Playful, childlike, fun personality in the following episodes. The first episode has changed my feelings that I had in the intro of this video lol

I like faithful adaptations. I like adaptations that expand a story and show us things in a different way, as long as it's faithful to the source material.
I don't like dot to dot pictures.
In this case, if the dialogue and writing is this good in the game, there is no fucking reason not to have it in the film, too. I've never played the game but I had nightmares about fungus after the first episode. I don't have nightmares about TV shows.

I was skeptical about her not playing too but Neil Druckmen being involved im sure they gave Bella all the source material and direction needed for her to deliver the same impact without resembling Ashley Johnsons performance. I'm excited to see how it unfolds!
I hope they did! Right now it feels like she's trying too hard to be angry and bitchy for me, I'm interested in how she portrays the side of Ellie that made her so likable. The playful child but determined fighter that we root for.
I don't think with how the first episode played out we have gotten a chance to see those moments yet but having seen Bella's last movie Catherine called Birdy I am pretty certain she can pull it off for me. Whether it works for you are not may come down to personal opinion but so far I am liking what I have seen from her.
@@JustSumBLACKGuy But...isn't that exactly what Ellie is like in the beginning? Especially in the early stages of getting to know Joel? She's angry and defiant and distrustful of him. Her whole arc in the first game is about her letting go of those defensive walls around herself while slowly starting to trust and care for Joel.

Nope, I stayed clear of every details once they announced a show was coming. I wanted to go into it as blind as I could. But now that I know that detail, I won't be as apprehensive next episode reaction lol
I think the actors were told not to play it as to avoid spoilers for them on scenes.
I thought they would read the scripts first, rehearse, and know everything before heading into production, but I don't know how the movie or show business works, so🤷🏾♂️ They know better than me
The creator of the game had a big say in the making of this show. He's credited as well. I think that's why this actually hit as hard as it did because he knew to drive home key points. Other stuff is whatever they can mix and match the new details but they hit all the right moments just perfect.
And the casting is spot on. Bella Ramsey doesn't look like Ellie but she can play the part of Ellie to a tee. And Pedro is just perfect as Joel.

I'm still on the fence with Bella as Ellie but I think it'll be ok after a while. She's got the attitude to play her just not the look but I'd much rather have a good actress that can sell the role than a bad actress who looks like her if that makes sense.

The backlash is real my friend and it’s such a sad thing to complain about. It doesn’t take anything away from her character and the actress who played Sarah did an amazing job. I wonder why some white people struggle with appreciating a character if they don’t look like them when people of color have been able to do that without an issue since film/television has existed.
I haven't explored much to see their opinions but it's crazy how that even if race doesn't have a factor in the story of the character & if the actor/actress portraying does a great job... they'll still be a problem. It's wild to me. I made jokes about her appearance here only to tease this annoyed. It's really a non-issue fr

So, swapping them would effectly ruin the character. & white people have portrayed black people in media for a longgg time lol. Before Blacks were considered "worthy" to be on screen, white people who play over exaggerated characters of them. That's where black face & the black stereotypes originated. Also, "white washing" is a thing. White people have played in roles meant for black or people of color since forever. For example, you think 'God's of Egypt' should've been an all Caucasian cast? Absolutely not lol

Bella Mackey did watch gameplay. Its impossible to get someone to look just like Ellie, but important to note, Ashley thought she was perfect.
Yeah, I said she did & of course, the game itself even changed her appearance a lil bit in the remaster. & that's exactly my point, if the creator and the voice actor of Ellie thought she was good enough to be in the show, then I have faith in them so I'll just wait until see more. Luckily my son had Monday off of school, TY MLK. We did an on the fly review as we watched. After getting sh*^ty adaptations from Amazon, I was skeptical, like you. But I am a believer now that whoever at HBO has their priorities right. With the exception of that last season of GOT they have not screwed much up. (famous last words)

I didn't know that going into it but I LOVE that
The Last of Us was truly one of my favorite games of all time, up there with the Uncharted’s (let’s pretend that movie adaptation with Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Sully doesn’t exist…), so I was skeptical like you were. Glad we both ended up being sold on it, though.
Even some people I’ve watched it with who never even heard of the game, like my 56 year old dad, are hooked. Part of me is glad it is coming to life on a TV medium where people who never experienced the story get to experience it for the first time. If you like to watch reactions like you made here, seeing people’s reactions to this show who don’t know the game is SUPER intriguing.
And I get what you mean about Ellie, but in this adaptation it seems that she doesn’t really know Marlene and was chained up. If I was chained up by people idk, I’d be a lil bitch too fr 🤷🏼♂️ but she’s gonna do good as Ellie, I can feel it.

One of the best pilot episodes I've ever seen.
The pilot episode is one of the best pilots I've ever seen even surpassing that of the Walking Dead. The introduction gave clarity and showed the individual struggles people had to cope with. I'm really looking forward to seeing how they build the characters and how they develop the relationships and attempt to match that of the game.
Zombie TV shows and films have been done millions of times before and often lack creativity but this so far has a breath of fresh air and if like the games concentrates on human emotion and connection then I think it'll do incredibly well and I can't wait to watch the rest of the series.
Even more than the Walking Dead is a HUGE statement. TWD was my my top 5 favorite show of all time. BUT... I do agree, this pulls you in right away and comes in with a bang. Almost like it has to proving itself and it took it very seriously. I also agree that the Zombie genre is ran through and tired right now but I think this will set itself apart because of the actual story and characters. It definitely surprised me. Actually since the game starts in around Austin Tx the casting of the TV show makes more sense. The race of Joel, Tommy and Sarah has no bearing on the story.

Dude, get over it with Ellie. Bella Ramsey was a character in Game of Thrones with a one episode part with 20 lines. She stole the show so bad that that they brought her back for more episodes and wife (who didn't watch the show) would come in from wherever she was in the house to watch little Lady Mormont shred scenery.
They even gave her a great death, killing a giant as it killed her. I'm very happy she's part of the show. I cheered.
But I do understand dealing with preconceptions about a game or (in my case) a book when they make changes. You should have hear my outrage in Lord of the Rings. But now it's okay. We get over it.
All the GOT references here are falling on deaf ears lol I do not watch that show. But I'm sure she was great! I am not doubting her acting at all. I just don't buy her as Ellie. & its way more than just looks but I will expand on what I mean in Episode 2 because I haven't seen enough yet to write her off. I very much appreciate you listening to what I said and responding to a specific point, though! Thanks for that, I'm sure she'll do her best in this series too

I never watched Game of Thrones, I'm not into it, but yes, I do know that the actress Bella was in that. I know of her, I just don't buy her as Ellie yet. No shade to her acting abilities, though.

I need to see more before I write her off, so I'm not doing that just yet, just stating by first impressions, she seems way more of a lil asshole than Ellie was (to me at least) but I'm very happy that others think she's a great cast. Definitely wouldn't want that backlash for the show.

Just how I feel, I think Sara was perfect. My husband who knew nothing other than the basics around the apocalypse that I told him about fell in love with her in about 4-5 minutes. My friends that loved the game cried like babies when she died knowing full well what was coming. If anyone is mad, that's their issue, the actress was amazing and she was a natural Sara.
Yes, she was great! The only thing different to me, was her hair. Because her delivery and acting was spot on. Even the cry she let out as she was dying smh it was crazy. I loved it.

I know it's hard to not compare it to the source material, but it's good to try not to.
It's impossible for the show to make you feel the same way the game did, because when you played the game, you were experiencing the story for the first time. You are watching this, already knowing what the major plot points and themes are.
It's best to just try to enjoy it for what it is without holding it to an impossible standard. Embrace the changes they've made

Good video and it’s obvious you are a fan because your detail is very good but I do think you’ve misunderstood what Craig Mazin said about violence and pixels. He doesn’t mean characters we know, like Sarah, Tess, Joel, Ellie, Henry, Sam etc…he’s taking about faceless goons that you off, but that you get killed and those same goons are in the way again. Sure, sneak up behind the same guy, by the third or fourth time he won’t mean anything to you by then. So what he then went on to say we want every death to matter. So to illustrate that. Let’s. Take the guard, first we see him dealing with Joel and we get a handle on his personality and motivations, so that when we meet him later, we know him, he’s not a faceless goon. When Ellie stabs him in the leg, he’s not just the faceless soldier who Ellie stabs in the leg. Then when Joel has his PTSD episode and punches him to death. It means something. He was a person. Someone we already knew. And that’s what he meant by that phrase so he want dissing the game, he was saying they have to approach it differently. And he was right because the guard is a prime example of that.
The other thing about not playing the game beforehand is nothing new. Directors want you to take Direction, they don’t want you to sleepwalk through a carbon copy 1-1 because it looks fake. It has to come from the actor so it comes natural. And sometimes it’s best not to have anything to base it on because you’ll just copy it and then it looks fake.
I also think this hang up on looks and I’m speaking generally here, but none of the characters except Marlene because it’s the same actress look like their game characters. Pedro doesn’t look like Joel, Gabriel doesn’t look like Tommy, Anna doesn’t look like Tess, Nico seriously doesn’t look like Sarah, so why is it so important that Bella looks like Ellie? But what you will find is that they all act like them including Bella.

You're reading WAYYYYYY too much into the pixels comment....if you look at the full interview, he was referencing that in the games when you die you just start over from the save point. Meaning death isn't as impactful since that doesn't happen in a show.
Besides, the showrunner that said this(Mazin) is a massive fan of the games and was the guy campaigning to make the show.

usually I'm against race changing of characters , but for once this one I kinda preferred Sarah in this than the original she did so good. I'm same with Ellie's actress her face just looks off to me but she does sound like Ellie so time will tell. I'm a little bummed the Spores are not at a thing but yeah loving this so far.

Did anyone else notice that everything seems flipped compared to the game? the leaning building in the game is left leaning to the right , flipped in the series. Ellie is looking out of the right window with joel on the couch on the left flipped in show. Joel carries Sarah shes looking over his right shoulder, left shoulder in the series etc ? another being the burning house at start is on left side of road , but its right side in thegame?

LOL everytime you said you weren't holding out much hope I just smiled cause I knew how much you were going to love this adaptation. They did a fantastic job. As to people being mad about Sara not being white, I ask you is Pedro white? No? Then Sara could be any color or mixed because we have no clue what race her mother was...its never discussed so good on her for being an amazing little actress and killing the role. Pedro of course killed it as Joel too and Tommy was a match for the voice in the game as well. Some people are complaining that Bella isn't a good match for Ellie. I say bunk...she did fantastic, just because she doesn't look like what they want Ellie to look like they will complain. Oh well that's their loss cause she is amazing too. Story wise I loved every thing about it except that they made Sara steal the money(with the best of intentions I know but still....shame on you writers) And did you hear the clickers at the end....Cant wait for the next episode.

Loved this. Long time huge fan of the first game. They race swapped Sarah. Why? I think the girl who played Sarah was superb. I would like to think that she got the role because she was the best, but you have to be suspicious of a diversity check, right? Whatever, it's minor, it didnt change the story and the girl who played the role was brilliant. I was not sold on the idea of Bella Ramsey as Ellie though. Her face just doesnt look right. But I have to admit she has got the spirit of Ellie perfectly and in the few scenes we had with her, she really sold it. I'm warming up to her quickly. It's too early for a verdict, but if the show continues in thus calibre, it is gonna be a solid win.
Exactly, Sarah really changes nothing and she killed it so I don't see an issue. I hope in the next episodes, Bella can win me over as she's done with other because I'm not feeling her rn either. @@JustSumBLACKGuy The only issue with the Sarah thing, is why do it? The only reason for it is politics and that's BS IMO. But it's a really minor irritation in an otherwise superb start to the show and it could have been much worse. The more I see of Bella Ramsey, the more I think she's got Ellie's sass nailed. She looks nothing like the game Ellie though, so she's gonna have to be good to get past that. Can you tell she's British? I thought she did a great job of Ellie's Texas? accent for such a young girl. The guy playing Joel knocked it out of the park. One episode and that guy is Joel to me now. Good job.

Sometimes, this lil mixed black&white girl had a better delivery than the others & that's okay. So it doesn't irritate me at all. Pedro/Joel KILLED this. Well the casting choice for Sarah doesnt look like the in game character either, but that gets a free pass ...why? You'd have been hacked off if they had made Joel Chinese, right? I'm just making that point. I'm sure they could have found a little white girl to play Sarah. If they cast her as anything else, they did it for a reason.

Honestly surprising how I haven't come across too many people be mad at Sarah being race-swapped. The girl playing her in the show did a great job though, so I'm all for it. Plus, it's not like Pedro Pascal is a white Texan like Joel was, but he's still doing pretty good for his part, and a non-white daughter for a non-white dad makes sense.
Having said all of this... I was laughing when I saw the race swap because I thought "hey, the showrunners did NOT just see a white girl get killed in the games and think 'she dies? then we have to race-swap her because we can't have a little white girl dying'" XD

What they added to the story that was in the game just made the story better. I loved how we got to see more of Sarah at the beginning.
