If you listen to the podcast, Neil brings up the Joel pulling away from Tess part at the end. He said it was an example why they told the actors not to play the game. Pedro did that on instinct, but if Pedro had seen Troy Baker's scene from the game he might have just imitated it. Troy was kicking himself that he didn't think to play the scene like Pedro did.
I listened after filming my reaction this time! Props to Pedro for doing that all on his own. Troy's portrayal seemed more heartbroken and sad when Tess showed the bite which I did enjoy but I think both are great, though
Just wanted to say I'm loving your reactions (and subscribed) - I really enjoy your commitment of fidelity to the game but also open to changes that improve the story and character arcs, and love how there's some seamless transitions from new scenes right into scenes we recognize from the game. I think they're being really clever about incorporating all the notes and info pickups from the game into actual character dialog or backstory. And lol I like that Joel stepped on the damned broken glass that we all do at least once (and oh shit those clickers were fantastic).

I'm loving this show's openings, I love the game but I'm so glad we're getting the 'lore' more established and I think the show is doing great with setting the tone with these Openings and I LOVE how they are from different time-periods, episode 1 was a show from the 60s talking about the possibility about the threat fungus possesses, this episode had it set in the same year (2003) and gave us information to show us how the fungus spread in the first-place via wheat, the factories internationally the fungi yeast used in baking, that's why Sarah, Joel and Tommy are so lucky because they unintentionally avoided anything with wheat in it (Biscuits the old lady was being fed and they got offered some, the pancakes Tommy forgot, the cake) it's why episode 1 had a big focus on food. The Clickers...wonderful wow...With clickers, I was expecting them to look off because with make-up it could look not right but they pulled off an amazing Clicker and even just building the tension for their reveal. Now about the new stuff in the actual episode I like the focus on a hivemind that the fungus itself is the living entity and the 'zombies' are just puppets and so it can direct and control hordes cunningly as an organism would I really like that and I think they're giving us great additions of new lore while sticking as closely as possible to the original source material. It also makes killing risky because if you kill 1 it's highly likely if the fungus can reach them from below the earth it can send a horde to your location, it couldn't do that with the clickers because the fungus there was dry and dead and too high for the ground to reach, makes killing them so much more hassle. I heard some people were hating the fact that the show wasn't a 1 for 1 show exactly like the game and I honestly do not understand it because so far I think the new stuff added to give more detail fills in the gaps the games didn't give us (The games focused on gameplay and game experience with the story, the show can focus on filling in more of the story and adding other stuff to it). And even the small details like Tess being frozen because the fungus inside of her forced her to not move or light while the Stalker 'kissed' her because the mouth is the easiest way into the main body organs to speed up the process (Looking at the chat from episode 1 we see that the bite location depends on the time taken to turn) Anyway, this comment is way too long but just my thoughts, I'm okay with Ellie still they're definitely taking her in a whole different direction that is more fitting the tone of the show and it's building up the relationship of trust between Ellie and Joel but we'll still need to see how it goes, I'm curious if Ellie's character is gonna develop after the death of Tess.
Oh and the spores, I don't think the show will have them because in the game you could see them and it has it's, own mechanics...since the show is live-action you technically wouldn't be able to see the spores and that could look weird if they tried to CGI it in, on top of that they would have to wear masks the whole time because spores travel rather than stay in one place and so that means the whole cast would be obscured with a mask during the scenes and then even then there would be a ton of complications with the characters having to shower every night because of the spores on their clothing. Don't know for certain if the spores will exist or be mentioned more but I understand why translating it over to live action would not go well.
Thanks for the comment! Yes during my reaction I touch on the foods being avoided & the Clickers presentation, they look so good. The showrunners have explained that there will not be spores in the show at all. That isn't a deal breaker for me so it'll just be interesting to see them expand on other things that explain the back story. Re: Joel's reaction to Tess being infected: Apparently this is the reason they didn't want their cast playing the game. They said that, because that moment wasn't in the game they probably wouldn't have gotten it if Pedro Pascal had played it. They said the most they could have gotten would have been a poor imitation of Baker's performance and they wanted Pascal (and all the actors) to make the character(s) their own. The companion podcast for this show is worth a listen. It's hosted by Troy Baker(game Joel) and they talk a lot about the changes they made and why. I usually don't like those types of podcasts but there are a lot of illuminating tidbits in it.

Yeah, I wonder about that moment with Joel where he steps back from Tess, at first I was thrown by it thinking he was too afraid of the infection to let her get close. I didn't see a gun, but the way he stepped back seemed to imply it. After rewatching more than a few times, I think he's just in shock the entire time.

Yeah, I wonder about that moment with Joel where he steps back from Tess, at first I was thrown by it thinking he was too afraid of the infection to let her get close. I didn't see a gun, but the way he stepped back seemed to imply it. After rewatching more than a few times, I think he's just in shock the entire time.

Yea especially since the characters are 10 years old this year. We lived with them so of course pple will be attached and critical
They chose not to go with spores bcause spores can travel for miles and r unpredictable and the actors would have to wear gasmasks all the time
