I had heard about the thefts but I thought they were within the last few years. Didn't realize it was about a decade ago. Still not ok but being that 72 of 76 items were returned, the desertion is more of an issue to me. But that said, I'm not British, so doesn't really affect me. Why is all this being discussed a decade+ later and statements like "The Petherick family story is depressing". It isn't that depressing, and they seem to be doing pretty well and uplift a lot of people. Id hardly call it depressing lol.
Gwen and Billy were only convicted in February this year. It’s taken that long to get the case together. He looted over 40 small village churches and sold the artefacts on to a dealer. He didn’t return the stuff it had to be retrieved. The guy is a low life thief and grifter.

Con men use the trust they build to manipulate feelings and perceptions of what is right and true to get money, things or favors. Many of Billy's viewers are elderly and don't know while they praise him for "saving history" that he and Gwen plead guilty to stealing French history from the churches and the French people. Now he's lying about it to people all over the world.
The 72 stolen church artifacts were recovered by the investigators from France's Central Office for the Fight against Trafficking in Cultural Property (OCBC). The police had to trace each sale thru EBay and the antique trader. The buyers lost their money too since they bought stolen goods.
