Coming here to pay my respects to Paul. A true legend in my book. His contribution to Iron Maiden has and always will remain legendary for me. His voice and albums with the band got me to love Maiden to begin with. He may be gone, but he’ll never be forgotten. Rest easy Paul, and thank you for your tributes to the heavy metal landscape of music. Up the irons.
Damn. I remember buying this album in 1980 when my dad was stationed in Germany. I was 14. I remember all the kids coming out of the record store holding up their new Iron Maiden albums as if it was a sacred artifact. I guess they, we, were right. Some of the greatest care free times of my life with the best music. I can’t believe that was 44 years ago. RIP Paul and Clive. A piece of me will always remember the joy you brought to my 14 yr old self. Thanks
He had an awesome voice. The early era of Maiden certainly has it's charm and well earned merit. Bruce is awesome but I do love me some Paul. I think Blaze should have been given more of Paul's songs but I digress. Much love to our forgotten pal Paul.
Paul was a powerhouse back then. Aggressive, harsh and angry, the right guy to sing underground, street metal, such as Maiden was playing in the first 2 records, the best music that they ever played in my opinion.
STORM Russian Combat System I agree, their first two albums, and also NoTB and PoM are my favorites. I like all of their 80s work but to me they don’t compare to their earlier stuff.
And don't forget the most important bit, this is the guy who also sang on Remember Tomorrow and Strange World with the voice of an angel. Very few people are versatile enough to be able to cover both ends of the spectrum and almost everything in between.

RIP Paul. Thanks for two of the greatest metal albums of all time. Still listening to them now, and I still can't decide which is the best one. Run free. You will be missed, but never forgotten.
How can people say that Paul could never sing? The Rainbow show has some of the best singing anyone ever did. Even when he's not pushing his voice like in this song or Phantom, he still sounds spectacular. And those screams... Brilliant!
Dianno was mostly known as (in his prime here) a showman, frontman, and commanding of the stage. His voice was very good, but not Halford or Dio-ish. Years later he would really fall though which is a total shame...
Paul was a punk singer. I think he could sing like Dio or Halford but I bet he hated the idea of perfect and polished singing. He comes pretty close to that style in his 1984 album though.
He has, of course, tons of character in his voice and it's also a pretty big voice. He's in tune. But he's not very technical. His vibrato sounds a bit artificial/forced but it's still on point so to speak. It doesn't seem like he lets his voice resonate optimally. On his solo stuff from 86-87 he sings more professionally. But I think the "total package" from 80-81 beats it.
