  • In this video we'll install a current Gretsch hard plastic pickup riser on a vintage Dynasonic pickup. The guitar is a 60s Double Anniversary thats been quite modified over the years.

    What is pickup riser for?
To change the height of the pickup?
    Or as a shock absorber?

Couldn’t you just pop off the pickup cover, slide the riser on without cutting it and ruining it, and pop the cover back on?

No, the magnet and spring assembly is just too large to fit. To avoid desoldering the pickup you have to cut the side of the surround, but thats OK because you'll find Gretsch's from the factory with risers that were installed that way. Not ruined, you can even glue the ring back together after if you really feel strongly. All that filing is necessary no matter what, though, unfortunately. If you want to avoid cutting or desoldering and a lot of filing work to fit a hard plastic surround, you can always just buy the rubbery foam risers from TV Jones instead.
On this instrument the pickups were retrofitted by someone long ago, and the screw holes in the top of the guitar were a bit oddly placed, so I had to do even more work off camera to get the riser holes to line up without drilling even more in the guitar.

Thanks mate, the dogs eat better than me! This deal would indeed be faster with a rotary tool and some fresh sanding wheels and grinding bits if you have them on hand already.
Check out the TV Jones risers instead if you're a bit squeamish and have vintage pickups to raise.
Thanks for watching, hope you have a great day!
