I recently took my VW in for service and was given a Mazda CX-30 as a loaner car. I was extremely impressed and started researching Mazda. This one of the most comprehensive, logical and informative comparison reviews I have ever watched. You have convinced me to give Mazda serious consideration for my next vehicle purchase. Thank you so much, David!
I own a CX-30 Turbo Premium Plus. And I absolutely love it. I’ve owned many cars, including an Acura and an Audi, and my CX-30 is my all time favorite. Highly recommend!
Love this video David! As someone who is ADHD and talks fast, I love your calm, soft pace. I wish I had that ability. 😂 Aside from that, I agree with everything you’ve said. I’m fortunate enough to have gotten a CX-90 (the exact spec in your video) as a 1 year loaner for me to make content with. I’m really leaning towards working out a way to purchase it after the yea is up. My wife loves it, my 1 year old fits great, it’s well insulated, drives well, and I honestly think it makes more power than advertised. Especially if you fill it up with 93 octane. This thing moves which is extremely refreshing in this class of vehicle. I’ve obviously driven crazier, faster, over cars but the quality & fun to price ratio is unmatched. As a reviewer I’m sure you can agree that we not only get excited over cars like the 911 GT3 RS, Escalade V, Raptor R, etc. but we get excited when a car does something extremely well and does it without asking for the moon & stars.
CX 90 is not only good looking, but the build quality in and out is extremely awesome. I am sure we will see Mazda come to the front row smoothly among SUV competitors with this type of build quality. I have not seen any such previous initiatives from this company, but this one is Amazing....
David, I love you detailed and explanations. The details, comparisons, and technical terms make make it much better than some of the other videos on RUclips. Thank you for all your videos.
I like the upscale direction Mazda is going. The CX-90 looks amazing. I still would like to see a Mazda Speed vehicle to return to challenge the Toyota GR.
Just bought our CX 90 yesterday. We traded in our Explorer limited hybrid. The plugin was too much money for us. We don't have any negative complaints after 24 hours. Just learning about all the tech stuff.
I'm getting the CX-70 as soon as it comes out. I can't wait to see how it looks as it's supposed to be wider than European version CX-60. Brilliant review by Mr. David Chao!! 👏🏼
Yes CS-70 is a slightly wider CX-60, I THINK it is the same length but you'd need to check. Here in UK my CX-60 should have arrived at the dealership so hopefully pick it up this week.. PHEV. I test drove one and was really impressed with the road manners and handling - comparing to the Maserati Levante S that I just sold. Gonna miss that exhaust note but not the fuel consumption :)
@@456gm Yes they are all built in Japan. I had the pleasure of tracking the vehicle transporter ship that brought my car over - the Mazda dealership gave me the vessel name.
Mazda has upped their game seriously!! Enjoying a 23 Soul Red Turbo CX-5. Its absolutely awesome! I know. Not the same car. But Mazda is making some very good cars these days!! Plus! They're beautiful!! Japanese design at its finest!😊
I never considered Mazda until I was in the market for a new car for my 20 yr. old daughter. She wound up buying a CX-30 because I don't think any car in that segment can touch it. So I got to lay eyes on the CX-90, which I didn't know I needed, until now. I think my 2022 Toyota Tundra might be going away soon.
@@rishijai I have had close to a dozen Toyotas in forty five years and I have only had one significant repair a rear bearing went out on a 1982 Corolla. This is while keeping them an average of fifteen to twenty years. We presently have three a 2005 Camry, a 2006 Avalon, and a 2015 Avalon Hybrid the two Avalons we bought new the Camry was purchased used when it was two years old by my father-in-law. None of them have had major repairs. Consumers Report rates Toyota and Lexus number one and two in reliability each at 72 on a 100 scale the next closest are BMW and Mazda at 65. Honda and Audi round out the makes in the sixties all other makes are in the fifties and lower. Everyone makes their own choices I will stick with Toyota because they provide the most of what I value for my money. I have had Hondas and a couple American makes and one European. Several have required expensive repairs.
@@matthewhuszarik4173 Toyota interiors are the cheapest among all of the Japanese brands all hard plastics and cheap dash they are basically econo boxes they have a lot of road and wind nosies esp the rav4.
great review, thanks, this cx90 is really great product, and what i like the most, unlike others cx90 still feels like a car inside, without this crazy sizes infotainment screens and with physical knops/buttons , well done mazda! thanks for staying been a classic car and not a space shuttle
Back in 2012 when i was shopping for SUV i started with Acura MDX as i was trading in a TL that input 212,000 trouble miles on but too small for what i wanted and hated the interior layout! Looked at probably every other SUV then drove CX-9 and i was immediately sold, great interior layout, great looks outside and driving experience. I wish they offered this version as this one looks so much better than mine but i loved my mazda so much i kept it 10 years.
The only factor I would ask (and I think it’s important for this segment) is how is the spacing in that third row? Can it fit 3 car seats and 4 adults? The grand Highlander seems to have an edge there.
I love Mazdas and have owned four of them over the years starting witn the Millenia back in 1995. I've seen the CX90 on the show room floor and I was impressed. However, I think Mazda missed the mark with the CX90 PHEV. The 26 mile range falls short of my Kia Sorento PHEV by 5/6 miles all electric range. My Sorento is also a very excellent quality SUV with 3 rows and maybe a bit smaller but not by much and I get 31/32 all electric range and it's rated at 79 MPGe vs CX90 56 MPGe. My Sorento's MPG for the past 14,000 miles has averaged 62 mpg total and the past 9,999 miles (which is the max miles on trip setting) has been 71 mpg! Of course mpg all depends on a persons driving style and how many long/short trips one takes.
I just watched a video where the two reviewers charged the CX-90, put it into EV only mode, and did real-world driving (some street driving, some highway, etc) and they got 31 miles before the battery ran out. And they had the AC on in over 90 degree weather. They were impressed because it’s only rated at 26… Mazda was very conservative when they rated it at 26!
My biggest concern with this engine is whether Mazda is using steel sleeves in the cylinders of this aluminum block or Mazda is using Plasma Wire Arc Transfer technology to coat it from inside. Dave if you verify it please, that would be great. Thank you.
Thank you for that concise review of the cx 90 David. I myself am interested in one. The only thing for me is that I didn't want something quite as large. I am wondering if you think the cx70 that is coming this year also would be smaller and thus fulfill what I am looking for?
Great Video. The cargo capacity is much more similar to the Highlander than the Grand. I do like the PHEV that the Grand Highlander won't offer, but the same seating or cargo capacity. The PHEV is >$65K Canadian, which is extremely expensive. The Non PHEV doesn't give the fuel economy that I am hoping for. I will likely be going with the Grand Highlander. If the interior size was more comparable to the Grand Highlander, I would likely buy the PHEV today.
I really like your reviews... I am thinking about Lexus TX 350 but how will these 2 compete against each other? Any video to compare these 2? or even include hyundai palisade 2024. Thanks!
I wonder if young kids in the 3rd row suffer from « motion sickness » because of the ride quality ? We have that in the 22’MDX and the 3rd row isn’t popular for long rides.
don't decide till you drive them, makes no sense i'd keep the order on the HL and then compare you know you could then cancel which ever i agree about the 6 inline inherently smooth.
The CX-90 3.3 is a potential replacement for my 2005 4Runner. My use-case is family of 3 adults, 2 dogs, and occasional towing a 19 ft boat. 5000 lbs towing capacity, longer wheelbase, and 40% more hp and torque should make the CX-90 a safer, more powerful tow vehicle. Sporty driving experience, better fuel economy, and lower emissions. Only downsides are premium fuel, which partially offsets cost savings from improved fuel economy, and 40 cu ft cargo behind 2nd row (5 passenger configuration), 20% less than the 4Runner. I owned a 1985 RX-7, and thought Mazda was great value, i.e. Toyota quality for less money. The CX-90 has the same high quality as my 4Runner, and has a lot of functionality that I find useful. Quality has slipped on some Toyota SUVs, and I sometimes wonder what use-cases Toyota builds its SUVs for. Would be great if the third row seats in the CX-90 were removable to increase cargo capacity and reduce weight to increase payload and fuel efficiency.
It is atrocious that in 2023 the cars are still being painted instead of being wrapped in limitless-opportunities vinyl ( which is more durable, more consistent and could be safely and eco friendly replaced)
I'd be super careful with anything Kia. They are all hybrids IMHO. They all burn gas and oil! Just sold my Kia Soul, burning 1qt of oil every 1K, dealer said normal LOL. Sister car, Palisade just had a trasmission issue, I understand the just put in a huge recall on many of the new model year transmissions. Even as complicated and BMW like the engine on this car is, I'd 100% buy it before any Kia or Hyundai. I did test drive a CX 90 last weekend.... very very very sweet.... super smooth...super comfy and very good engine.....BUT watch The Car Care Nut's youtube on this car...he has big issue onthe engine having to come out if timing belt issues...EXPENSIVE IMHO
Most people don't know what their missing, Mazda feels like a hidden gem. I'm hoping they change their mind and produce the new Mazda 6 they were planning with this powertrain
@@mezzb I agree with you in most conditions it's not noticeable. I'm just surprised due to Mazda's recent move to more premium vehicles. It seems like a step back, if they're looking to compete in the premium market.
As a Toyota loyalist, the only Mazda I ever owned were Rx7s during my younger years and now that I'm a family man with 3 young kids, I was looking at the 3-row Highlander as a replacement for our 2014 Sienna. After watching this video, I will now look at the CX90. Thanks David!
I also have been a Toyota loyalist for over 30 years and during the chip shortage and the car shortage at dealers. I made a decision to try Mazda! Yes I had a Mazda back in the 90s but I have not had one since then. What can I say why did I wait so long to buy a Mazda? There is very little to no road noise in my Mazda CX 9. All of my Toyotas had significant road noise. I have been very impressed with my two Mazda in the last three years. Now I am looking at the CX 90 PHEV! After watching tons of videos about this vehicle I placed my order today for one. Thank you Mazda for making such fantastic products!
The Mazda really lags the Toyota on practicality and might be hard pressed to replace a minivan. Much smaller third row and far less cargo room than the Grand Highlander. Behind the first row it has less than a Honda CRV, amazingly enough and behind the third row the Toyota Grand Highlander will have 50% more space (21 cubic feet to 14.9 cubic feet).
It competes against the MDX for me, with the benefit of the inline 6, and power being delivered to the rear, and they stiffened the chassis. Mazda hit all the right boxes. I like the profile.
I’m going to have to decide wether I want this one or the GX460, or the in-line 6 diesel station wagon with the 7 speed manual made in Japan, that still doesn’t exist? Why don’t they make guy cars anymore? Guys have the cashola deluxe. The inline 6 is a more balanced engine than a V8. You have to go V12 to match the balance of an inline 6.
@@chrisshore9000 Only the Type S has air suspension. But I've driven a new 4th gen MDX and honestly? It drives worse than the 3rd gen that I own. Not as tight steering, worse lane keep assist, car waaaaaay too soft, and the only differences between the old one and new one is the addition of a wireless charger and a heads up display. And a nicer looking interior. The Mazda triumphs the MDX hones
We also have a 2016.5 CX-9 (it was a brand new mid model year introduction), almost 7 years and 80K miles and its been flawless with the exception of the wheel paint/coating peeling starting in year 6. Definitely upset over that but it won't stop me from buying another Mazda SUV. Best 'driving' SUV on the market and although looks are subjective, our current CX-9 still looks totally fresh today. I actually like the CX-9 exterior more than the new CX-90..., the 90 looks like the face got punched. Still a great looking vehicle but I do think the CX-9 was just perfect. Love that they went with the turbo I-6 and a rwd biased setup on the CX-90...that is the draw for me. My only dynamic complaint about the CX-9 is that you can still feel that front wheel drive bias and FWD torque steer under heavy throttle. Last thing to note is the price creep. Our fully loaded Signature at the time retailed for 44K and got for 42.5, a fully loaded CX-90 is going to be 50% more than that. So they have definitely moved up a several notches in price, though the engine and RWD biased platform may be worth it.
I think the CX-90 has the right combination of ingredients to become a future classic. Excellent fit and finish, a design that will age well, RWD I-6 layout, good performance, and modern Mazda quality. This is something special.
That's what I thought as well.. the new CX-90 will be a great family SUV. But then I went to a local dealership and test drove one.. boy was I dissapointed.
@@teedeekay9720 Went to look at the top trim CX90.. It drove great, looked great and the inline 6 turbo felt great. Compared to my 2020 Palisade(top trim).. it lacks a lot in space(trunk is small and don't even bother putting an adult in the third row its absolutely useless), usability(considering its size it feels cramped inside and not a lot of storage or storage space are small), luxury features and especially tech(infotainment on the CX90 feels very outdated even compared to my 2020 Palisade). It just didnt feel well thought out and put together inside.. hopefully the refresh will address most of this stuff. I was really hoping the CX90 would replace my 2020 Palisade but for now it would feel somewhat of a downgrade for me switching to a CX90. Basically CX90 great on performance but lacks a lot as an everyday three row SUV.
Many thanks for the video David. I’m so pleased that you have praise for this new Mazda. They really are producing some amazing cars for such a small company. Keep up the great content David, thank you 🙏
Thank you for your unbiased, honest review from a Toyota engineer. This gives me more confidence in Mazda to try out the CX-90 and CX-70. I am a Toyota fan, but looking for the best bang for the buck. Toyota has lost it's quality control, in my opinion. I am willing to try other manufacturers.
For sure the gap has narrowed between Toyota and competitors. The gap was so wide before that Toyota didn’t bother, offering any niceties in the cabin. That’s changed.
Since my mechanic told me to buy a Mazda back in 1995, I haven't looked back. My last Mazda had 250,000 miles on it before I bought my 2014 CX5. It had 111,000 miles. Keep up with maintenance and it will run forever.
Really looking forward to driving one of these and comparing it to our Volvo XC60, as we are looking for a replacement. We thought about moving upwards to a Volvo XC90, but when we heard Mazda was building a new *value luxury-inspired* SUV, we just needed to wait. Appreciate the awesome review!
Every so often Mazda makes a class topping car like this right smack in the heart of a segment, that Toyota and Honda can't match. As a long time Mazda fan I love to see it and hope it leads to greater and greater success for them.
David, I whole heartily agree with you the CX-90 is and will be a better car than the Grand Highlander. Lately, I am feeling the U.S. Operations of Toyota are failing to bring out well thought-out vehicles and their execution is below par. As an owner of Toyotas (all made in Japan) for many years, I have noticed all their Japan produced vehicles are executed better. Also, I agree with you...I would get the CX-90 in lieu of the Grand Highlander. As far as Toyota this year, I am sure Toyota will present a well-made Land Cruiser Prado in North America. As I said before, I am hoping there will be a V6 option. Thank you for your excellent engineer's reviews through your many years of experience.👍
@@mixalis6168 Toyota is a world power. The problem is they don't have to listen to the consumer, because their current customers are happy with what they produce. A few comprises here and there, and solid reliability. Historically, that is not the "soul" of Toyota...the West ruins everything it can touch. Money equals success!?
Just purchased the PHEV version and was pleasantly surprised by the refinement of both the interior and exterior of the vehicle. The driving experience thus far is exactly as described in this video review. Thank you David, your professional engineering assessment puts into words objectively what I am feeling about the car subjectively in the first week of driving the CX-90. Very happy with my purchase, the drivability, gas/electric milage, and the pricepoint!
Mechanical engineer here whose last four sedans have been Mazda6s, maybe the most underrated vehicle sold. Thanks for a straightforward professional technical review that addresses significant factors I care about instead of the fluff and subjective personal opinions given by so many YT amateurs. Just want to add that an inline 6 is also preferred because it is naturally balanced (as is the V8). V6s require complex, power sucking balance shafts and this inferior format only exists because it can fit into the small compartments allowed by minivans. Mazda made the decision to take the IC engine to another level through innovation and they succeeded - My 2025 M6 with an 2.5L I4 engine has plenty of power and gets great fuel economy. Mazda didn't invent direct injection but they seem to have perfected it; I have not heard of carbon buildup issues like some more expensive German models suffer from. Mazda also stayed with the conventional automatic transmission instead of the two-clutch versions made by German automakers. They improved the shift times and in fact I barely notice the shifts. Finally the steering, which if I didn't know was electric I would never have noticed anything different. Your comment about the motor being mounted directly on the rack improving feedback was a good one, but another advantage is it offers the best, most direct input to the rack. Keep up the good work!
Not a fan of the dual clutch either. Coming from a VW GTI - the two issues I had with it were intake carbonization (had to take care of this twice in 100k miles I had it), and the jerky awful transmission which was universally lauded when I bought it. With VW no longer offering the class leading semi-premium interiors they used to, I'm definitely looking harder at Mazda.
Thank you for your observations. I think it was the "Car Care Nut" channel that stated that one of his concerns with this CX-90's inline six engine was that the timing chain is on the back of the engine. If that is correct wouldn't that be a high maintenance cost repair, at least for someone? If it lasts 300,000 miles then maybe it would be someone elses problem. I haven't been able to put that many miles on anything I have ever owned. Other than that I think it is a very interesting car and one that I should put on my radar. Your input on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
I went to a master showroom to grab a used car and the salesman just opened the door of a new CX-9 and I was shocked with its design and quality. Then he told me this whole package is $60k, of course that was out of my budget but I thought that was probably over $100k. After touching and looking around, it was love in first sight.
Wowsers! I had no idea Mazda cars were so good. As an Industrial & Systems Engineer, with a Black Belt cert and trained on LEAN/Kaizen manufacturing by Shingijitsu Japanese consultants, I’m absolutely impressed with Mazda’s manufacturing and performance. I too am obsessed with manufacturing perfection. I was about to buy a Subaru Outback but I wasn’t 100% convinced. But now I’m going to have to test this one. This may end up being the one I buy. And that Bordeaux color is to die for. The gloss is amazing! Thank you David! A true engineer’s review.
I test drove multiple 3 row SUV's including XC-90, MDX, and Q7 (3.0T) and the Cx-90 was the choice for me. David hit the nail on the head with his review, $60K well spent on a Turbo S Premium model that surpassed the others in driving feel, agility, value, and fun!
I purchased the first Mazda CX9 available from our local dealer here in Wisconsin and it's been a trouble free ride, great build quality, all weather handling, responsive engine ride, but it needed a bit more room that the CX90 delivers. I'm ALL in on making the CX90 my next ride.
The CX9 didn't have terrible seats it had ok seats. I didn't like how cramped I felt in the drivers seat, my wife loved it but after 47k trouble free miles we traded it in for a Subaru Ascent. The Ascent has more room, better vision, a great AWD system and more utility. We did look at the CX90 it's still a tight fit for me, weighs too much, and drive train is way too complex. @@victorgold4735
Drove a Mazda 3 at 11,000 feet and was purring and responsive. Have a cx5 never had an issue after 8 years just usual break pads, oil changes. Used to own Honda's. The quality is excellent and the price versus quality, mechanical is excellent.
Other important thing is front suspension. Like Acura Mazda changed to Double Wishbone from struts, Most of Lexus and Toyota has struts. That makes a big difference in deriving dynamics.
I agreed with you about CX90. For the reasons, I actually sawed this vehicle displaying at Costco store. The quality materials made completely with highest grades, more refined & durable with the inline 6. Secondly, the size of vehicle and tires, the lighting systems. I always stayed away from Mazda for many decades largely because experienced of 1993 636es, etc. Lastly, this vehicle manufactured in Japan by Japanese. It’s imported from Japan. Let recapturing about Toyota manufactured in America by American which gives less quality built, more issues.
Loving the direction Mazda is going with their cars. Personally, I don’t want want something this big so I’ll wait for the CX70, I think? Though I really wish they’d bring back the 6 lol
I've been considering the Mazda CX-90, but after diving into customer reviews, it seems many people have issues with it. It is not as reliable as CX-5.
It is a brand new model, so there will be some issues. I have 2024 PHEV and after 8 months and 7000 miles I had not had a single issue. Just as well-built and reliable as the other three Mazdas I have owned.
Watch a dude called "The Car Care Nut" it will scare the heck out of you from buying this car... basically he says you have to remove the whole front clip... and the engine... just to service the timing belts AND the turbo is huge and will create heat issues in the engine bay. If you read the reviews you'll see a bunch of people with the same concern / video. David does not respond so I question if these are paid advertisements ... but I have no way of knowing other then his total lack of being transparent
@@fatcatscooter2584 I did watch the Car Care Nut video before buying, but I trust Mazda so I bought a PHEV. After 10,000 miles I haven't had a single issue, which is probably the case for most people. Usually people only go online to post about issues they are having, while the rest of the people are just enjoying their vehicle.
Great intuitive video. I'm a huge Toyota/Lexus fan, I was curious on your thought's on how Mazda reliability/durability compares to Toyota/Lexus. I really love the fact that Mazda is made in Japan. That is huge.
@@mbenton6 I did and for what I read reliability is excellent...I also looked at the vehicle at a local dealer in Connecticut and loved it...Im going to make an appointment to test drive.
This thing is Gorgeous!!! I totally agree with you. I saw two here in Vegas and fell in love. Sorry for Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, Honda, and all of the other competitors, this is amazing.
I leased over 6 Mazda CX5 and now leasing 2 Mazda CX9 for me and my wife and I will tell you I never ad a problem most underrated car company! Love your comments and glad to know that the CX 90 is a good SUV. One thing for sure it looks amazing 🤩
Great video! Made in Japan, inline 6, fantastic fit and finish and the fact this is one of the few SUV's that I think look good! This would be a MUST TEST DRIVE SUV if one is looking in this price range. Mazdas have always operated like a well built, smooth as silk sewing machine...
I hear you have to remove the front clip and the engine to do some work on the engine on this care (The Car Care Nut) youtube video. You hard about that? I'm skeptical ...thinking CX50 instead...what you think?
Thanks David, I would have never considered Mazda because of Ford owning 30% of Mazda but no longer the case they gave Ford the boot and quality went up and continue to go in a positive direction. Love the fact they are built in Japan as well. 😊👍
This is my first time watching your videos, David. And, I guarantee that it won't be my last! Very in-depth report (no one else on RUclips uses a micrometer; excellent show of quality!) And, I was never really a major fan of Mazda, mostly due to the fact that their product specialists at the Chicago Auto Show were quite rude to me. But, I have to admit, this CX90 looks absolutely beautiful both inside and out. I just wonder if it will be priced as Toyota or Lexus competitor! Again, quite impressive reporting. A new subscriber has been born here! And, he has big ears and is cuddly like an old 🐰!
Can anyone comment with regard to concerns of maintenance cost to change spark plugs? I understand the last 2 or 3 are difficult to access and the engine needs to be lowered? Similar question on timing chain. Not as concerned here as the chain will likely last the life of the car
Mazda is like in affordable price u will get great build quality car + luxurious + fun to drive + awesome reliability. Most underrated brand on the road.
Picked up a CX-90 Premium yesterday, it's nice. Kinda wish it had a touch screen, but I sit so far back I can't reach the screen anyway 🤣. If you get the bigger screen you can do touch screen in apple\android car apps. Coming off a 2021 Grand Cherokee limited lease. The Jeep was a good vehicle but it drove like a truck, the off road capabilities kind of hurt some of it's street driving and I don't go off road so wasted on me. I wanted something smaller like the cx-50 but the 90 was so nice... and smaller sounds good until you realize you've been drive grand cherokees for 7 years and anything smaller feels like a shoebox. 🤡
David, as and engineer myself your evaluation got my juices flowing! Excellent review and value for dollar spent. And, because of your review and my first time seeing you I am now a subscriber.
I service Toyota/Lexus and Honda. Mazda was a very underrated car company for many years. They've made a name for themselves with the technology, engine, transmission and luxurious interiors that beat its other Japanese counterparts.
David, thank you for the review; well done. Even I drive a Nissan Altima now. I had Mazdas before, and they are great cars. I have been following the CX-90 for some time, which is on my scope. That is the next car I am getting.
I own both a 2013 Miata/MX5 (bought used) and a 2016 CX9 (bought new). David, regarding your comment that Mazda is not seen as reliable as Toyota by Consumer Reports. Does that include a rating by CR that occurred in 2020 or 2021 by them. CR rated Mazda as the most reliable brand (overall, all models) of cars sold in the USA. Personally, other than normal oil changes I had only one instance where I was surprised by a repair. My local dealer noticed an oil leak on the hydraulically-adjusted serpentine belt tensioner and advised replacement. I travel long distances camping and the technician knew I didn't want to break down in some remote area. The cost was several hundred dollars, but not overtly expensive. Other than that one instance, all service on the CX9 has been routine. My personal shop/garage at my home is 2700 sq ft with a twin post hydraulic lift. My hobby is old car repair, especially custom painting. I've done drivetrain repairs on several modern brands. My Mazdas are easy to maintain. I've only needed brake pads. My dealer is fantastic. Oil changes are less than what I'd pay for oil & filter from Walmart. The service tech even showed me how to do fuel injection system service like they do, saving me over $200 in labor. My CX9 just turned 99,000 miles. Just routine maintenance? THAT'S VALUE! Yes, Mazda doesn't have the reputation of Toyota, but I LOOOOOVE the way both my Mazda's handle. Thanks for your EXCELLENT reviews!
I bought a CX-90 in May of last year. Very satisfied with the vehicle. J.D. Power currently ranks Mazda No 1 in overall quality ahead of Toyota and Lexus.
I just bought the base preferred plus in January.......I love this car! It is a beautiful "soul red", perfect fit and finish, luxury interior and a JOY to drive!!!! Spoken by someone who has owned two 911's and a Boxster!
My Toyota Sequoia is rolling up on 500,000 miles pretty much problem free. Anyone have good luck with a Mazda? Last Mazda I had was equipped with a Wankel engine.
Glad to see Mazda getting its props. Rented a Mazda 6 about 5 years ago and was startled at its steering response and how it handled. European like without the cost and repairs. I need to see if PHEV is available on other Mazda models as we don’t need 3 rows anymore.
I recently took my VW in for service and was given a Mazda CX-30 as a loaner car. I was extremely impressed and started researching Mazda.
Thank you for your kind words and thank you for watching!
As an automotive enthusiast and working at an automotive Tier 1 supplier, I really enjoy your perspective on reviewing automobiles.
Great review- I love that you start with build quality! The CX-90 is gorgeous and I cannot wait to drive it
Thanks for your help in our decision... beautiful car!😊
I like the upscale direction Mazda is going. The CX-90 looks amazing.
I still would like to see a Mazda Speed vehicle to return to challenge the Toyota GR.
That would be cool!
@@ukgroucho Congrats! Great choice! i'm also interested the CX-60 too, Are the UK version CX-60 also build in Japan?
@@456gm Yes they are all built in Japan. I had the pleasure of tracking the vehicle transporter ship that brought my car over - the Mazda dealership gave me the vessel name.
One of the main benefits to an I-6 engine is it's naturally balanced, so there is less vibration.
Mazda has upped their game seriously!!
Enjoying a 23 Soul Red Turbo CX-5.
Its absolutely awesome!
I know. Not the same car. But Mazda is making some very good cars these days!!
Plus! They're beautiful!!
Japanese design at its finest!😊
Great review from an engineer. I'm waiting for the new CX70 which will be the slightly smaller two-row version.
Great job Mazda!
CX-70 is the same width as CX-90, not as long and 2 rows of seats, AFAIK it will be offered with same powertrain specs as CX-90.
The CX-80 offered in Europe is the same as CX-60 width but will be a longer 3 row config.
Australia gets the CX-90 end if this year, but also gets CX-60 in 2 weeks and I think CX-80 next year....confused😊
Cx60 or cx5? Fuel efficiency, comfort, ride quality
Well done Mazda, I like this and can't wait until the CX70 is released.
Hopefully there is a sedan in the works also.
This is a beautiful car, thanks David. I like this vehicle. Very nice.😊❤
If they brings back the 6 and RX-7, my garage would be entirely MAZDA.
CX-90, 6, MX-5 Miata, and an RX-7. The perfect collection 👌.
Mazda's quality was what Toyota used to be.
Toyota’s long term reliability is still by far second to none.
@@matthewhuszarik4173 It depends on the vehicle. The CVT transmission was a bad idea even for the Corolla.
@@matthewhuszarik4173 Not for all of their vehicles anymore unfortunately.
Several have required expensive repairs.

great review, thanks, this cx90 is really great product, and what i like the most, unlike others cx90 still feels like a car inside, without this crazy sizes infotainment screens and with physical knops/buttons , well done mazda! thanks for staying been a classic car and not a space shuttle
Do you know it is the?
The only factor I would ask (and I think it’s important for this segment) is how is the spacing in that third row? Can it fit 3 car seats and 4 adults? The grand Highlander seems to have an edge there.
Cargo space too. The Grand Highlander will have a maximum of 98 cubic feet. The Mazda has 74 which is less than a Honda CRV.

Thanks for the review David . Would you choose this car over Acura MDX?
Great Video. The cargo capacity is much more similar to the Highlander than the Grand. I do like the PHEV that the Grand Highlander won't offer, but the same seating or cargo capacity. The PHEV is >$65K Canadian, which is extremely expensive. The Non PHEV doesn't give the fuel economy that I am hoping for. I will likely be going with the Grand Highlander. If the interior size was more comparable to the Grand Highlander, I would likely buy the PHEV today.
Thank you for knowledge 💡💡💡💡💖💖👍👍😎😎
I really like your reviews... I am thinking about Lexus TX 350 but how will these 2 compete against each other? Any video to compare these 2? or even include hyundai palisade 2024. Thanks!
I'm skeptical
Mazda has some of the most beautiful looking vehicles. Their engines seems to be coming into the top tier level.
I wonder if young kids in the 3rd row suffer from « motion sickness » because of the ride quality ? We have that in the 22’MDX and the 3rd row isn’t popular for long rides.
Easy comparison, you can fit a cx90 inside a Grand Highlander. Third row is cramped and not enough cargo space behind third row in the cx90!
Incredible and exciting SUV...now to trade my X5 in for one
Wouldn't mind Toyota learning from Mazda on interior quality build,, especially in the Sienna Hybrid!
Great review. Thank so much.
Can you suggest what if CX-90 compare to Lexus RX500h Hybrid? In term of build quality and reliability, durability?
Wow, looks like Mazda is really kicking some butts out there
Great review. Taking away pricing considerations, how does this stack up against the BMW X5 in all the other points? Thanks
don't decide till you drive them, makes no sense i'd keep the order on the HL and then compare you know you could then cancel which ever i agree about the 6 inline inherently smooth.
I bet the third row can be removed with proper wrenching
The torque stays the same regardless of octane so that’s at least a draw.
It is atrocious that in 2023 the cars are still being painted instead of being wrapped in limitless-opportunities vinyl ( which is more durable, more consistent and could be safely and eco friendly replaced)
How does it compare to the Kia Telluride
I have been saying this for years
Don't ask how I know, but if the CX-90 and CX-70 do well, keep your eyes open for a Mazda 6 successor.

Mazda wants to be better than Toyota but cheaper than Lexus.
You had rx-7’s as a young man…. Wow money bags
@@ecovango6675 hmmmm. Why is my local Mazda dealer trying to tell me that I cannot place an order?
It competes against the MDX for me, with the benefit of the inline 6, and power being delivered to the rear, and they stiffened the chassis. Mazda hit all the right boxes. I like the profile.
I’m going to have to decide wether I want this one or the GX460, or the in-line 6 diesel station wagon with the 7 speed manual made in Japan, that still doesn’t exist? Why don’t they make guy cars anymore? Guys have the cashola deluxe. The inline 6 is a more balanced engine than a V8. You have to go V12 to match the balance of an inline 6.
The new MDX has higher end tech in the AWD system and suspension, especially since the MDX is equipped with an air suspension.
@@chrisshore9000 Only the Type S has air suspension. But I've driven a new 4th gen MDX and honestly? It drives worse than the 3rd gen that I own.

Thank you for sharing
For sure the gap has narrowed between Toyota and competitors. The gap was so wide before that Toyota didn’t bother, offering any niceties in the cabin. That’s changed.

How is it going? Hear a lot of problems on them
You mentioned some good points about build quality which most car reviewers don’t mention.
Great review. Would tuning the inline 6 to with software to open up the power mess up what the Mazda engineering team made
Thank you for your observations.
I’ve owned two Mazdas
New and both lasted around 130k
With all maintenance that was required
My 4runner has 600k no problem
I went to a master showroom to grab a used car and the salesman just opened the door of a new CX-9 and I was shocked with its design and quality. Then he told me this whole package is $60k, of course that was out of my budget but I thought that was probably over $100k. After touching and looking around, it was love in first sight.

Thanks David, I would have never considered Mazda because of Ford owning 30% of Mazda but no longer the case they gave Ford the boot and quality went up and continue to go in a positive direction. Love the fact they are built in Japan as well. 😊👍
Yes indeed - Toyota now owns part of Mazda so the good vibes are probably rubbing off too.
Gee, that split happened over 15 years ago! (2008). Where have you been?
All Mazdas are made and assembled in Japan?
@@thosetwodudes from what I know, only the CX90 and CX5 models are, others are either in Huntsville or Mexico
@@desmondlee3778 All the SUVs above cx50 , CX-5 and Miata all Made in Japan.
Love the perspective. Would have never considered those things. The grand highlander and cx70 are the main vehicles I’m interested in right now
I’m wanting one in this color. I have always been a Jeep guy but my next non truck vehicle might very well be this. It’s so beautiful.
I like it most of all the longitudinal I6 engine.( mechanic for 40 years)
I agree 100% the fit and finish on my Mazda CX-5 is excellent and the ride and build quality is top notch
Thanks for sharing!
@8:53 Haven't driven the Grand Highlander yet, but still compares and says he'll choose the cx-90 over the GH.
This is my first time watching your videos, David. And, I guarantee that it won't be my last! Very in-depth report (no one else on RUclips uses a micrometer; excellent show of quality!)
And, I was never really a major fan of Mazda, mostly due to the fact that their product specialists at the Chicago Auto Show were quite rude to me. But, I have to admit, this CX90 looks absolutely beautiful both inside and out. I just wonder if it will be priced as Toyota or Lexus competitor!
Again, quite impressive reporting. A new subscriber has been born here! And, he has big ears and is cuddly like an old 🐰!
Thank you so much for your kinds words and for subscribing!
@@AutomotivePress Very well-earned compliments on your part. Thank you for such outstanding reporting and please, keep up the great work!
@@1_Papa Thank you again!
Thank you so much!!
No dear sway bar
Timing chain in the back
I bought a CX-90 in May of last year.
Spoken by someone who has owned two 911's and a Boxster!
can you get panoramic roof, 3 people sitting arrangement (no captain seat) in 2nd row in any trim of this cx-90?
Also Mazdas safety features are the lowest among all japanese ... In a honest review this should have been included .
I bought a cx-90 plug in about a month ago. I absolutely love driving it, and after watching this video I understand why.
My Toyota Sequoia is rolling up on 500,000 miles pretty much problem free. Anyone have good luck with a Mazda? Last Mazda I had was equipped with a Wankel engine.
One of the first is made en Japan and second one is automatic transmission….and the most that I love is their reclining rear seats 👏👏👏👏👏
How good are Mazdas for reliability though?
This was excellent and really sealed the deal that this will be my wife’s replacement for her Honda odyssey!
Glad to see Mazda getting its props. Rented a Mazda 6 about 5 years ago and was startled at its steering response and how it handled. European like without the cost and repairs. I need to see if PHEV is available on other Mazda models as we don’t need 3 rows anymore.
Get the CX90 and keep the 3rd row down. Trust me, it drives much smaller than any other 3 row SUV!
Just stumbled upon this video. Talk about a review. Facts and points that matter to the consumer, not just about driving around a corner.
Thank you.
