I'm very impressed with the CX-90. I've owned several Hondas and several Mazdas and only 1 Toyota (1st generation Celica ST).... Although I know that Toyota makes possibly the most reliable cars in the world, in general I find them lacking in charisma. Mazda is my current favorite car brand.
generally I would agree. I always passed up the Toyota when I was buying a new car. But after the Grand and Crown, I am now a Toyota fan....also a Lexus fan. I always loved the look of the mazda. Classy yet sheik. But every time I test drove one, I found it to be noisy. One of the reasons I never bought a Toyota RAV is for that cabin noise. Mazda was the same for me but maybe now it's different. I was looking for an NX or RX hybrid Mazda equivalent. Sadly they don't really have a hybrid in those models yet. If Mazda made a mid size hybrid like with the CX-90 interior, I'd be 80% sold. Only thing that holds me back is resale value and possibly some reliability since Lexus has them beat.
David I've watched 50 hours of YT reviews on Mazda CX90 and yours is the best! Really appreciate what you've got: engineering viewpoint, talking about specs but not just listing them off, really going into what's important. Talking with the engineers and letting us Know the Mazda viewpoint. I'm a 9 year owner of a CX5 which has had only one issue in that time after 120k miles, LeD lights failed about year 2. That's the ONLY thing and I would drive my car 2 more years but I'm ready for a new one. I was so lucky to "fall into" Mazda branda after going to a Subaru dealership. The Subaru seat hurt my back after an extended test drive. I drove away with the comfy Mazda seat. I have found however that the CX90 seat is too stiff. That's the biggest failure. However, I love the car so much I still ordered one!
I've viewed several of your videos now and I have to say I'm impressed. You're knowledgeable. Your explanations are easy to understand, concise, and not overly technical.
Great evaluation of both vehicles. I was going to get the Grand Highlander max, but wasn’t impressed with the interior, and I really loved my 2017 Highlander hybrid 6 cylinders ( was totaled in accident) So after seeing many reviews of CX 90 PHEV, I test drove one , and WOW was impressed with interior, and exterior. Drove on interstate plenty of punch to pass slower vehicles, but then when I put in sports mode, this became a different vehicle, reminds me more of sports sedan characteristics. But what really pushed me towards Mazda CX90 PHEV was the $7500 credit off MSRP if you lease it and no penalty if you pay off lease early. So I placed my order for CX90 PHEV and saved $1000s. Other note the CX90 PHEV gets much better mpg in hybrid mode vs GH and much cheaper than GH. My only issue is how dependable will this Mazda be down the road.
I have had my CX90 for almost 5 months and I love it. the power of the 6 cylinder is very smooth. I have been driving from the interior of B.C. to Vancouver and back and it handles outstanding. Fuel mileage on my trips has been 9.5L per 100 k at speeds of 120 to 140 kph.. Way better than my older CX9. Love the wireless Apple car play. Takes a bit to get used to the engine shutting off at 120kph.Never have owned a Toyota but I am sure it is a great vehicle.
Great review. Thank you for your thoughtful and detailed insight. I’m glad to see Mazda is on par with the best of them and getting better and better. Not only is Mazda‘s handling and overall quality top notch but I love their exclusivity if you will. With Toyota and Honda, you see yourself coming and going everywhere. With Mazda you get an awesome vehicle and something unique on the road.

Thanks David! I've looked at both and still considering both. Leaning toward Mazda, mostly because I have driven a CX-9 for the last 12 years. The interior on the lower trim levels is far superior in the Mazda. The Toyota upper level trims are good. I love the Mazda driving dynamics. It drives smaller than it is, the Toyota does okay. Best (exaggerated) analogy I can think of is if you want to drive like you're sitting in a recliner or on a comfortable couch, get the Toyota. If you'd rather be driving a sports car, get the Mazda. The Toyota will probably have better resale but the Mazda will give you more bang for the buck up front. Toyota quality and reliability is legendary, Mazda has improved greatly. As first year models, they both will likely have bugs that need to be worked out. Given Toyota's history there will probably be fewer issues with it.
I cross shopped a regular Highlander with the CX-9 (not 90) and I ended up with the Cx-9. The highlander feels huge in comparison. A lot more room inside. But there's no way the Highlander can take corners at the speeds that I do in the Mazda. Just no way. One is a sporty crossover and the other is mom's minivan. I'll let you guess which one is which.

You have made it very easy for me to decide which vehicle to purchase by showing the differences in the two. The Grand Highlander leads in areas that are the most important to me.
I currently own a Acura MDX 2011 with SH-AWD with 300HP. My Acura experience was amazing for my purchase at the time. I just recently test drove the Acura A-spec 2023 with 788 miles off a lease and the car is only a year old, poor quality of interior suede and leather mix on the seats ages horribly. The interior is ok but in comparison to my 2011 leather and real wood accents it looks like crap. The rims were also chipped with such little miles. Salesman got me into the MDX Advance, nothing advanced about it other than it was more money and just as underwhelming and unimpressive. When i got in, the interior was bland, lots of gimmicky features that are useless. I haul a family of 6 with luggage, so the car has to have great handling when off road and on the pavement. The SH-AWD makes a huge difference when driving in the snow or rain, my 2011 has a city driving if 16 MPG and 20.5 Highway but i have a hell of an engjne that has lots of low end torque. I assume the 2023 MDX which 4th generation of my car would have been amazing but instead no performance, overpriced, engine underwhelming and the safety features like the side-mirrors were actually smaller than those of my 2011 MDX but the car is actually 6 inches longer. The brake pedal was mushy and the comfort,normal or sports mode settings are nothing but a placebo button. The sports plus mode opens the throttle but that is it. In summary , i am no longer a fan of Acura. Specifically when you are spending $65k of my hard earned money. The one thing i found amazing about the safety features which would be awesome to have from the highlander platinum is the rear view camera mirror. That is extremely helpful when driving with 6 passengers and cargo and you have nice rear view. By pressing a button on the mirror, the rear mirror becomes a camera, that provides a clear view of what is behind you, just like when the car is empty and your ciew is bot obstructed. That should be standard in every SUV with 6 or more passengers. I am not going to lie, i am also looking at an used BMW X5, as for the highlander i am Looking at a 2022 model because of the 6cyl engine which naturally aspirated.
Couldn’t agree more on the poor materials in Acura’s. I have a 2008 TL with 128k miles. All leather seats have badly cracked. As I remember the cracking started when the car was only 6/7 years old. Other interior materials also didn’t age well, which makes the car looks like a 30 year old. The car also has been slowly leaking engine oil for at least 5 years and one major mechanical failure when it was only 85k miles. My 2009 mazda CX9, also bought new , leather and interior still looks excellent after 15 years with 150K miles, and not a single mechanical issue.
I bought a GH XLE just last month and i hate to say that my car is in the dealership waiting for a new turbo charger as the turbo wastegate remain closed and check engine light cane on twice made my car unsafe to drive. My car just made 800kms and this happened. This was a dream come true vehicle for me and just really upset about it.
I cross shopped the CX-90 with the Nissan Pathfinder. I bought the CX-90 and love it but I do wish they included parking sensors on lower trims. You have to go pretty high up in the expensive trim levels to get parking sensors in the CX-90.
Mazda cx90. For one, it doesnt drive like a minivan. 2. RWD-AWD + i line 6. 3. More luxurious interior and exterior. 4. Handles and drives like a $100,000 BMW. 5. Mazda Reliablity. 6. It just looks better... style and finish and road presence. I bought a Turbo S P P. It is awesome.
2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX has 362 HP not 326 as you stated. For a 4 cylinder vs. 6 cylinder the GH has the edge for fuel economy. We've owned our GH Hybrid MAX Limited since June and absolutely love it.
@golferpro1241 26-27 MPG with mostly city driving around Chicago. It's by far the most fun to drive, and I enjoy the additional sport trim, exposed exhaust, gold accents, and ultrasuede seats, so for me, it's worth it. If you don't care about the extras or a much faster and smoother ride, then MAX isn't necessary.
GH is underpowered, just as the heavy Sienna is. The 3.5 2GR is greatly missed. I drove a TX yesterday and with a load, it’s a dog. The 4 banger just isn’t enough. Toyota punted rather than keep the 3.5. They say 362 HP but it was weaker and slower than my 2018 Sienna 3.5.
@letsgobrandon5800 I've been driving my hybrid MAX for 5 months now and I guarantee I'd spank your Siena by a longshot. 0-60 in 5.8 seconds isn't underpowered, especially weighing 5000 lbs. It's the 400 lb ft of torque that provides the power. The TX Is slower unless you get the F sport.
What about the “timing chains” etc at the rear of the engine and long term maintenance costs due to having to pull engine for simple stuff? Ie vs Honda/Toyota
The interior of the Mazda is absolutely beautiful and much nicer in design than the Toyota. This becomes more apparent when you see the Mazda in the top trim package with the white leather interior.
@@JokerG16 David’s review of the GH seemed to suggest it was quite smooth. He did note it was a little louder than the outgoing V6 but I do not remember him making any mention of it being buzzy or similar.
MIght be important to differentiate between longitudinal/RWD based layout vs transverse/FWD based.. The cars now are so good that most people might not be able to tell the difference. Underneath the vehicle is where you start to see differences in design/thought process, and where companies often cut corners.
What is your recommendation for a TWO-row SUV. I have been following the release of the Toyota Crown Signia, but I am concerned about the low headlight placement, and absence of a spare tire.
David, thank you very much for this review. These two SUVs are at the top of my list (along with Honda Pilot/Acura MDX). Do you know what the differences are between the 280 hp and 340 hp I6 engines? In other words, is it *just* ECU, or are there different parts (bigger turbo, different intake/exhaust, etc)? Thank you again! You didn't mention that the CX90 is RWD-based. To some people, that makes a difference.
I know of someone who owns MDX, and when they wish they had wauted for the GH. The specs that come with the GH is incredible. Digital key, more space, over the air updates, and many more that cx90 doesn't come with. I got myself a GH limited hybrid AWD and I love it.s quiet, roomier, more space and it feels like luxury. I will highly recommend the Grand highlander.
I have the cx90 phev and I feel like they dropped the ball on it. Memory mirrors should be integrated together. The seat belt alarm doesn’t shut off even when the vehicle is in park. You have to turn it off to get it to stop. The backup exterior alert should also be able to be disabled as it is extremely annoying. The intermittent wipers are only speed adjustable when on auto mode. Other than a few more bugs it’s a great vehicle. I was really wanting the grand highlander but there was an 18 month waiting list for the hybrid.
If you aren't the kind of person who has money lying around, Grand HL is a better choice. It is time tested, sells a lot, most issues are identified and rectified. However, CX90 is new, no one know what issues may emerge in a year or two. I own a Mazda 3 and I absolutely love it. Touch screen thing is not really a issue, using the knob is so much easier and practical and also keeps the screen clean. I am inclined to buy 3row SUV as my second car.
Well the Gran Highlander is a new vehicle, actually a whole new platform for Toyota, so I wouldn’t say is been tested, now the difference in between the Highlander and G Highlander are night and day and they share a lot of components. Can’t speak for the Mazda.
David could you give a feedback to the designers that we need more organized storage and Locking storage. THe reduction in size of the middle console... Women need a place to put their purse, say if they drive to a client's house, or I go to the gym and need ot put my wallet in there. I work out of my car and keep keys, a bag, mask, pens, chapstick, sticky notes and my CX 5 has a wonderful console for organizing and storing, but the reduction in CX90 is pretty crazy (and across all brands and models). People want clean organized cars.
The CX90 looks gorgeous. IMO a closer comparison is the Highlander as both don't have much 3rd row space. I like the PHEV too! I chose the TX550H+ though... I owned a 2005 Mazda6, it was nice, but the Camry would have been a better choice for lack of repairs. A few oddball problems developed in my Mazda about 5 years after owning it, which didn't happen on my Venza.
@@mbenton6, I LOVE my RX450H+ and the TX will just be a larger version of that with the V6 mated to the PHEV Powertrain.... How could I go wrong? The CX does look nice and I did enjoy the drive of my Mazda6... but the overall quality wasn't as good as Toyota. I like the idea of an inline 6 Turbo, but Fuel economy is more important to me than fast for my every day driver.
The 2005 Mazda might've had issues, because Mazda partnered with Ford some time ago. Not sure if that MY is part of it, but that's the main comment with those early 2000's Mazdas
Was a very easy decision for me. First off the CX - 90 had mostly white cream interior Toyota was not offering that in the Highlander and I don’t like black interiors. Secondly, the headrest pushed too far in the Toyota Highlander. I value correct posture with proper support behind my back even though the CX 90s push forward a little it’s not as extreme Toyota.
Hello David I booked Toyota GH hybrid limited.I have not tried driving a hybrid GH and I have a question that does it make that drone sound of the hybrid system like the regular Highlander. I am hoping it’s less annoying because GH has a acoustic glass.Please advise.
I got myself the same GH hybrid limited AWD. I'm not sure of the drone sound but if it's similar to what I hear it my 2016 prius then no. The GH is silent. I don't hear anything until engine kicks but when it's on the hybrid, it sounds silent to me.
@ikbaltanwar7293 I'm certain that dies not exist in the GH hybrid limited. It's either silent or sound of the engine when it kicks in. You can test drive to find out.
AMD from "The Car Car Nut" reviewed the CX-90, and he said not much room under the hood to work on the engine. The timing chains and cam phasers, as well as other components, are all at the back. The power train would have to come out of the car. But in Canada, Mazda offers an unlimited km warranty.
Easy the answer is Mazda CX90 1st and most important and game changer is MADE IN JAPAN (not American low quality made) 2nd: 6 cylinders 3rd: rear wheel drive 4th: analogue gauge clusters

Highlander may not be an athletic choice but it’s comfortable, can haul families and cargo, but the engine is just barely enough since they now have a 4cyl turbo. The 6cyl was way better, but one thing we can all agree is that its 110% reliable with a high resale value. Mazda cannot say that, reliability is questionable, resale value not as much as Toyota. As for quality, and comfort, it all depends on what you will be doing with the car. I would bet my money on the toyota for sure.

It is very easy. If it is space that you are looking for and haul big family, save on gas get the Toyota. CX90 is very cramped on the inside. Fit and finish is beautiful with the CX90 but it is almost a 2 row not an actual 3 row. I also don’t understand the huge differential tunnel on the second row floor, it should have been flat for more space.
@@JackSmith-qi7drthat tunnel is also on the cx9 and other mazda vehicles. It shouldn’t have anything to do with rear wheel drive bias. It is something to do with the structural reinforcement of the chassis.
Time will tell, but I think some of the design/engineering features of the CX-90 are going to make for some very expensive repairs. I was unimpressed with the hard ride on the top trim model I tested.
Excellent comparison, I checked also the AWD features on the Highlander Hybrid Max and it looks like it’s great, that along with the cargo space with the 3rd row up are the definitive features that lead me to pick the highlander, also the 3rd row seats have ac vents and usb c plugs which is a big plus as well. I test drove the CX-90 PHEV PP today. Mazda forgot about storage when designing this car. The front has two cupholders and a console that’s about 3 inches deep. No second row console on the PHEV PP even though the website says it has one. Under the trunk lid, there’s virtually no space. Family SUV this is not.
I think it's a matter of what the buyer is looking for. If you want better handling on a 5k pounds SUV go with the CX-90...for space, durability, reliability and better resale value go with Toyota. In my opinion, Toyota all the way.
I think we are missing the point here...if you want something that handles sort of like a sports car, why don't you get a sports car. These two vehicles are meant to move as many people as you could as comfortably as they can...and in those regards the Mazda doesn't hold a candle to the GH. It's bigger on each and every dimension you could possibly imagine. I've been seated both at the dealership and to me it's ridiculous to think about these two being in the same category space wise.
Depending on what you need. Need a minivan with better looks, and good resale value. The other is built in Japan with Lexus quality interior. A premium platform, and if you get the inline six, a very special powertrain. At my age, I'd buy the Japanese Mazda over the U.S. Built Toyota. Mazda falls under the Toyota corporate umbrella and should be fine long-term
Easy decision since the Grand Highlander is barred from being sold since June due to a recall involving the front curtain air bags and no end in sight for the ban.
Toyota has really fallen off their quality with all the models and with a rapid expansion in manufacturing plants. My 2012 Prius was awesome but my 2020 RAV4 might as well have a colony of chipmunks living in it. Squeaks and rattles, poor panel alignment causing doors to stick and the dealership just dismisses the issues. My cousin bought a 2023 rav and it didn't have Freon in it. After sitting with the dealership for hours they accepted the issue and fixed it. Such a basic quality check missed.
I have a 2020 Rav. Bumpy Ride, loud and sounds like the window is cracked with all the cabin noise. I have to talk on speaker on my cell phone because the car play doesn’t work. It’s losing power while riding down the highway. The auto start sounds like the engine is about to give out when you drive off from a red light and the driver seat cover is broken. It’s an absolute mess. It has 40k miles on it, I’m old and work from home so not much use these days. I’m about to trade it for another brand.
Mazda is the most underrated carmaker in the world. Get ready for the Cx70, next Gen Miata, new rotary RX9 and I6 sedan in next few years ! All made in Japan.
Can you talk about the Mazda's rear timing chain, which requires the engine to be pulled out and half of the car to be disassembled for a timing chain replacement job. This seems to be a new configuration than previous Mazda's. Future repairs could be expensive, perhaps?
Beautiful vehicle. The Car Care Nut channel did an engineering review of the CX90 power train. The inline six has the timing chain on the back of the block. So the timing chain change is an engine out service. This is scheduled to be done at 100,000 miles. This is a deal breaker to me.
I really like your videos. But no way I can agree with you on the interior quality comparison. Mazda has way premium material fit and finish than Toyota GH. I felt you are biased little bit towards Toyota. Or else nice video.
I'd think the Toyota edges out Mazda if the prices are similar. Especially on expected resale value or even passing it to another family member. Yt makes me enthusiastic about Mazda these days and I want them to be successful, but the sure thing almost always wins. Of course if I was married, it'd then just be whatever the wife prefers lol.
With the cx90when out of warranty,what does it cost to replace e the water pump or timing belt?My understanding is the motor has to be pulled out and in order to remove the motor,you have to remove the complete front end of the vehicle
Resale is worth it alone with the Toyota. If I’m buying a used car no way I’m buying a Mazda with 60k miles on it and on the flip I wouldn’t think twice about buying a Toyota with 75k miles on it.
Toyota Highlander and likely the Grand Highlander will be the most stolen vehicles. I know I will pick Mazda CX-90, not only stylish and fun to drive, wont get outdated once your kids grow up, 6 cylinder, more technology on the GT vs XLE and offers mild hybrid.
If you measure an American made "luxury brand" Acura, you'll find the hood gap is big enough to put a finger in, they don't even know how to align the doors and bumpers, it's amazing, I've never seen such poor workmanship, even on cheap brands.
Anyone try to buy a Toyota in the last 2 years?? You're at the mercy of when the dealer gets a few in and you don't have the "Luxury" of maybe getting the actual color and options you want just gotta take what you can get - No thanks.
Grand Highlander Platinum Hybrid max destroys the mazda inline 6 any day. Mechanics say that the mazda engine will be an absolute nightmare to work on should anything go wrong. The hybrid in the toyota reduces the stress on 4 cyl so it is not buzzy like the base engine when floored. Thing is... the TX500 comes with this exact same setup but cost almost 19000 more and only comes with 6 seats I believe. I think the hybrid max GH is the way to go but if I could not get that trim I would go Mazda unless you need the extra space and gas mileage. The TX cannot be 19000 better than the Grand Highlander!

CX90 has an engine issue because the engineers put the time chain in the back of the engine. This will make working on the engine incredibly difficult. I trust Toyota engineers. I’d like to see the plug-in hybrid for the Highlander.
@@markallen2984yeah interesting that someone would say an engine has an “issue” simply because of the location of a particular component, especially one that should be able to go a couple hundred thousand miles before needing service. Or was OP referring to an actual issue with the timing assembly perhaps? I haven’t heard of any yet so just curious.
@@markallen2984a Mazda going 200000 .? Not sure about that . Love the car but their history is a gamble as there are lemons in between the good ones . My son in laws , they can’t find the tranny solenoid problem . It’s a gamble driving . Hope that chain never stretches .

Thanks David! I've looked at both and still considering both. Leaning toward Mazda, mostly because I have driven a CX-9 for the last 12 years. The interior on the lower trim levels is far superior in the Mazda. The Toyota upper level trims are good. I love the Mazda driving dynamics. It drives smaller than it is, the Toyota does okay. Best (exaggerated) analogy I can think of is if you want to drive like you're sitting in a recliner or on a comfortable couch, get the Toyota. If you'd rather be driving a sports car, get the Mazda.
The Toyota will probably have better resale but the Mazda will give you more bang for the buck up front. Toyota quality and reliability is legendary, Mazda has improved greatly. As first year models, they both will likely have bugs that need to be worked out. Given Toyota's history there will probably be fewer issues with it.
I cross shopped a regular Highlander with the CX-9 (not 90) and I ended up with the Cx-9. The highlander feels huge in comparison. A lot more room inside. But there's no way the Highlander can take corners at the speeds that I do in the Mazda. Just no way. One is a sporty crossover and the other is mom's minivan. I'll let you guess which one is which.

You have made it very easy for me to decide which vehicle to purchase by showing the differences in the two. The Grand Highlander leads in areas that are the most important to me.
I currently own a Acura MDX 2011 with SH-AWD with 300HP. My Acura experience was amazing for my purchase at the time. I just recently test drove the Acura A-spec 2023 with 788 miles off a lease and the car is only a year old, poor quality of interior suede and leather mix on the seats ages horribly. The interior is ok but in comparison to my 2011 leather and real wood accents it looks like crap. The rims were also chipped with such little miles. Salesman got me into the MDX Advance, nothing advanced about it other than it was more money and just as underwhelming and unimpressive. When i got in, the interior was bland, lots of gimmicky features that are useless. I haul a family of 6 with luggage, so the car has to have great handling when off road and on the pavement. The SH-AWD makes a huge difference when driving in the snow or rain, my 2011 has a city driving if 16 MPG and 20.5 Highway but i have a hell of an engjne that has lots of low end torque. I assume the 2023 MDX which 4th generation of my car would have been amazing but instead no performance, overpriced, engine underwhelming and the safety features like the side-mirrors were actually smaller than those of my 2011 MDX but the car is actually 6 inches longer. The brake pedal was mushy and the comfort,normal or sports mode settings are nothing but a placebo button. The sports plus mode opens the throttle but that is it. In summary , i am no longer a fan of Acura. Specifically when you are spending $65k of my hard earned money. The one thing i found amazing about the safety features which would be awesome to have from the highlander platinum is the rear view camera mirror. That is extremely helpful when driving with 6 passengers and cargo and you have nice rear view. By pressing a button on the mirror, the rear mirror becomes a camera, that provides a clear view of what is behind you, just like when the car is empty and your ciew is bot obstructed. That should be standard in every SUV with 6 or more passengers.
I am not going to lie, i am also looking at an used BMW X5, as for the highlander i am Looking at a 2022 model because of the 6cyl engine which naturally aspirated.

Couldn’t agree more on the poor materials in Acura’s. I have a 2008 TL with 128k miles. All leather seats have badly cracked. As I remember the cracking started when the car was only 6/7 years old. Other interior materials also didn’t age well, which makes the car looks like a 30 year old. The car also has been slowly leaking engine oil for at least 5 years and one major mechanical failure when it was only 85k miles. My 2009 mazda CX9, also bought new , leather and interior still looks excellent after 15 years with 150K miles, and not a single mechanical issue.
I bought a GH XLE just last month and i hate to say that my car is in the dealership waiting for a new turbo charger as the turbo wastegate remain closed and check engine light cane on twice made my car unsafe to drive. My car just made 800kms and this happened. This was a dream come true vehicle for me and just really upset about it.

I cross shopped the CX-90 with the Nissan Pathfinder. I bought the CX-90 and love it but I do wish they included parking sensors on lower trims. You have to go pretty high up in the expensive trim levels to get parking sensors in the CX-90.
Mazda cx90. For one, it doesnt drive like a minivan. 2. RWD-AWD + i line 6. 3. More luxurious interior and exterior. 4. Handles and drives like a $100,000 BMW. 5. Mazda Reliablity. 6. It just looks better... style and finish and road presence. I bought a Turbo S P P. It is awesome.
I heard that many cx9/90 have sensitive wheel bearing, it could be damaged at daily driving

2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX has 362 HP not 326 as you stated. For a 4 cylinder vs. 6 cylinder the GH has the edge for fuel economy. We've owned our GH Hybrid MAX Limited since June and absolutely love it.

@golferpro1241 26-27 MPG with mostly city driving around Chicago. It's by far the most fun to drive, and I enjoy the additional sport trim, exposed exhaust, gold accents, and ultrasuede seats, so for me, it's worth it. If you don't care about the extras or a much faster and smoother ride, then MAX isn't necessary.
GH is underpowered, just as the heavy Sienna is. The 3.5 2GR is greatly missed. I drove a TX yesterday and with a load, it’s a dog. The 4 banger just isn’t enough. Toyota punted rather than keep the 3.5. They say 362 HP but it was weaker and slower than my 2018 Sienna 3.5.
@letsgobrandon5800 I've been driving my hybrid MAX for 5 months now and I guarantee I'd spank your Siena by a longshot. 0-60 in 5.8 seconds isn't underpowered, especially weighing 5000 lbs. It's the 400 lb ft of torque that provides the power. The TX Is slower unless you get the F sport.
The GH has the best MPG. Unfortunately, it has no soul. #teammazda

What about the “timing chains” etc at the rear of the engine and long term maintenance costs due to having to pull engine for simple stuff? Ie vs Honda/Toyota

The interior of the Mazda is absolutely beautiful and much nicer in design than the Toyota. This becomes more apparent when you see the Mazda in the top trim package with the white leather interior.

@@JokerG16 David’s review of the GH seemed to suggest it was quite smooth. He did note it was a little louder than the outgoing V6 but I do not remember him making any mention of it being buzzy or similar.
MIght be important to differentiate between longitudinal/RWD based layout vs transverse/FWD based.. The cars now are so good that most people might not be able to tell the difference. Underneath the vehicle is where you start to see differences in design/thought process, and where companies often cut corners.

David, thank you very much for this review. These two SUVs are at the top of my list (along with Honda Pilot/Acura MDX). Do you know what the differences are between the 280 hp and 340 hp I6 engines? In other words, is it *just* ECU, or are there different parts (bigger turbo, different intake/exhaust, etc)? Thank you again! You didn't mention that the CX90 is RWD-based. To some people, that makes a difference.
I know of someone who owns MDX, and when they wish they had wauted for the GH. The specs that come with the GH is incredible. Digital key, more space, over the air updates, and many more that cx90 doesn't come with. I got myself a GH limited hybrid AWD and I love it.s quiet, roomier, more space and it feels like luxury. I will highly recommend the Grand highlander.

I have the cx90 phev and I feel like they dropped the ball on it. Memory mirrors should be integrated together. The seat belt alarm doesn’t shut off even when the vehicle is in park. You have to turn it off to get it to stop. The backup exterior alert should also be able to be disabled as it is extremely annoying. The intermittent wipers are only speed adjustable when on auto mode. Other than a few more bugs it’s a great vehicle. I was really wanting the grand highlander but there was an 18 month waiting list for the hybrid.
If you aren't the kind of person who has money lying around, Grand HL is a better choice. It is time tested, sells a lot, most issues are identified and rectified. However, CX90 is new, no one know what issues may emerge in a year or two. I own a Mazda 3 and I absolutely love it. Touch screen thing is not really a issue, using the knob is so much easier and practical and also keeps the screen clean. I am inclined to buy 3row SUV as my second car.
Well the Gran Highlander is a new vehicle, actually a whole new platform for Toyota, so I wouldn’t say is been tested, now the difference in between the Highlander and G Highlander are night and day and they share a lot of components. Can’t speak for the Mazda.
Nah....Mazda is just about as reliable as this point so think this is a moot point. The Grand Highlander is basically a brand new vehicle as well.

David could you give a feedback to the designers that we need more organized storage and Locking storage. THe reduction in size of the middle console... Women need a place to put their purse, say if they drive to a client's house, or I go to the gym and need ot put my wallet in there. I work out of my car and keep keys, a bag, mask, pens, chapstick, sticky notes and my CX 5 has a wonderful console for organizing and storing, but the reduction in CX90 is pretty crazy (and across all brands and models). People want clean organized cars.

The CX90 looks gorgeous. IMO a closer comparison is the Highlander as both don't have much 3rd row space. I like the PHEV too! I chose the TX550H+ though... I owned a 2005 Mazda6, it was nice, but the Camry would have been a better choice for lack of repairs. A few oddball problems developed in my Mazda about 5 years after owning it, which didn't happen on my Venza.
You choose the wrong car. All toyotas lack charisma and driving enjoyment. Cx90 turbo spp blows it out
@@mbenton6, I LOVE my RX450H+ and the TX will just be a larger version of that with the V6 mated to the PHEV Powertrain.... How could I go wrong? The CX does look nice and I did enjoy the drive of my Mazda6... but the overall quality wasn't as good as Toyota. I like the idea of an inline 6 Turbo, but Fuel economy is more important to me than fast for my every day driver.

The 2005 Mazda might've had issues, because Mazda partnered with Ford some time ago. Not sure if that MY is part of it, but that's the main comment with those early 2000's Mazdas
Was a very easy decision for me. First off the CX - 90 had mostly white cream interior Toyota was not offering that in the Highlander and I don’t like black interiors.
Secondly, the headrest pushed too far in the Toyota Highlander. I value correct posture with proper support behind my back even though the CX 90s push forward a little it’s not as extreme Toyota.
The biggest game changer for me is the Korean Brands that have a screen in the display that has the lane view.

I booked Toyota GH hybrid limited.I have not tried driving a hybrid GH and I have a question that does it make that drone sound of the hybrid system like the regular Highlander.
I am hoping it’s less annoying because GH has a acoustic glass.Please advise.
I got myself the same GH hybrid limited AWD. I'm not sure of the drone sound but if it's similar to what I hear it my 2016 prius then no. The GH is silent. I don't hear anything until engine kicks but when it's on the hybrid, it sounds silent to me.
By drone sound I meant the sound of the hybrid system when you put the car n reverse or start driving then a different sound like a loud whistle.
@ikbaltanwar7293 I'm certain that dies not exist in the GH hybrid limited. It's either silent or sound of the engine when it kicks in. You can test drive to find out.
AMD from "The Car Car Nut" reviewed the CX-90, and he said not much room under the hood to work on the engine. The timing chains and cam phasers, as well as other components, are all at the back. The power train would have to come out of the car. But in Canada, Mazda offers an unlimited km warranty.
Do timing needs replacement?
Timing chains usually never needs service since they get constant oil lubrication.

So much for bullshit stereotypes. BTW, between the two, I would like take the CX-90, but I am not delusional about the automatic reliability superiority of Japanese built.
Highlander may not be an athletic choice but it’s comfortable, can haul families and cargo, but the engine is just barely enough since they now have a 4cyl turbo. The 6cyl was way better, but one thing we can all agree is that its 110% reliable with a high resale value. Mazda cannot say that, reliability is questionable, resale value not as much as Toyota. As for quality, and comfort, it all depends on what you will be doing with the car. I would bet my money on the toyota for sure.

It is very easy. If it is space that you are looking for and haul big family, save on gas get the Toyota. CX90 is very cramped on the inside. Fit and finish is beautiful with the CX90 but it is almost a 2 row not an actual 3 row. I also don’t understand the huge differential tunnel on the second row floor, it should have been flat for more space.

Cannot be flat. Rear wheel drive bias as opposed to the front shell bias of the Toyota. Engineers can only do so much, they cannot escape physics.
@@JackSmith-qi7drthat tunnel is also on the cx9 and other mazda vehicles. It shouldn’t have anything to do with rear wheel drive bias. It is something to do with the structural reinforcement of the chassis.
Time will tell, but I think some of the design/engineering features of the CX-90 are going to make for some very expensive repairs. I was unimpressed with the hard ride on the top trim model I tested.
It’s too bad the TX and Grand Highlander are not for sale, they stopped production and haulted sales due to air bag issues
Excellent comparison, I checked also the AWD features on the Highlander Hybrid Max and it looks like it’s great, that along with the cargo space with the 3rd row up are the definitive features that lead me to pick the highlander, also the 3rd row seats have ac vents and usb c plugs which is a big plus as well. I test drove the CX-90 PHEV PP today. Mazda forgot about storage when designing this car. The front has two cupholders and a console that’s about 3 inches deep. No second row console on the PHEV PP even though the website says it has one. Under the trunk lid, there’s virtually no space. Family SUV this is not.
just a note that the Grand Highlander does not have 326 HP (2024 Grand Highlander’s 362-HP Hybrid MAX powertrain)
I think it's a matter of what the buyer is looking for. If you want better handling on a 5k pounds SUV go with the CX-90...for space, durability, reliability and better resale value go with Toyota. In my opinion, Toyota all the way.

I think we are missing the point here...if you want something that handles sort of like a sports car, why don't you get a sports car. These two vehicles are meant to move as many people as you could as comfortably as they can...and in those regards the Mazda doesn't hold a candle to the GH. It's bigger on each and every dimension you could possibly imagine. I've been seated both at the dealership and to me it's ridiculous to think about these two being in the same category space wise.
Depending on what you need. Need a minivan with better looks, and good resale value. The other is built in Japan with Lexus quality interior. A premium platform, and if you get the inline six, a very special powertrain. At my age, I'd buy the Japanese Mazda over the U.S. Built Toyota. Mazda falls under the Toyota corporate umbrella and should be fine long-term

Easy decision since the Grand Highlander is barred from being sold since June due to a recall involving the front curtain air bags and no end in sight for the ban.
See them yourself. GH is a clear winner for most part. CX90 the top trim feels better built and more premium. But the storage spaces are real tragedy.

Toyota has really fallen off their quality with all the models and with a rapid expansion in manufacturing plants.
My 2012 Prius was awesome but my 2020 RAV4 might as well have a colony of chipmunks living in it. Squeaks and rattles, poor panel alignment causing doors to stick and the dealership just dismisses the issues. My cousin bought a 2023 rav and it didn't have Freon in it. After sitting with the dealership for hours they accepted the issue and fixed it. Such a basic quality check missed.

Ride, loud and sounds like the window is cracked with all the cabin noise. I have to talk on speaker on my cell phone because the car play doesn’t work. It’s losing power while riding down the highway. The auto start sounds like the engine is about to give out when you drive off from a red light and the driver seat cover is broken. It’s an absolute mess. It has 40k miles on it, I’m old and work from home so not much use these days. I’m about to trade it for another brand.
Made in US vs Japan is just convincing enough to buy Mazda..
What about the mileage? How do you adjust the steering wheel? How smooth is the transmission?

Can you talk about the Mazda's rear timing chain, which requires the engine to be pulled out and half of the car to be disassembled for a timing chain replacement job. This seems to be a new configuration than previous Mazda's. Future repairs could be expensive, perhaps?

Beautiful vehicle. The Car Care Nut channel did an engineering review of the CX90 power train. The inline six has the timing chain on the back of the block. So the timing chain change is an engine out service. This is scheduled to be done at 100,000 miles. This is a deal breaker to me.
I really like your videos. But no way I can agree with you on the interior quality comparison. Mazda has way premium material fit and finish than Toyota GH. I felt you are biased little bit towards Toyota. Or else nice video.
I'd think the Toyota edges out Mazda if the prices are similar. Especially on expected resale value or even passing it to another family member. Yt makes me enthusiastic about Mazda these days and I want them to be successful, but the sure thing almost always wins. Of course if I was married, it'd then just be whatever the wife prefers lol.
CX90 seems very good, however seats were not comfortable and that rotary knob is so distracting. V6 sounds good but takes too long to get to speed.
The GH Hybrid Max has 362 hp that was not mentioned.

Resale is worth it alone with the Toyota. If I’m buying a used car no way I’m buying a Mazda with 60k miles on it and on the flip I wouldn’t think twice about buying a Toyota with 75k miles on it.

If you measure an American made "luxury brand" Acura, you'll find the hood gap is big enough to put a finger in, they don't even know how to align the doors and bumpers, it's amazing, I've never seen such poor workmanship, even on cheap brands.
Anyone try to buy a Toyota in the last 2 years?? You're at the mercy of when the dealer gets a few in and you don't have the "Luxury" of maybe getting the actual color and options you want just gotta take what you can get - No thanks.

Grand Highlander Platinum Hybrid max destroys the mazda inline 6 any day. Mechanics say that the mazda engine will be an absolute nightmare to work on should anything go wrong. The hybrid in the toyota reduces the stress on 4 cyl so it is not buzzy like the base engine when floored. Thing is... the TX500 comes with this exact same setup but cost almost 19000 more and only comes with 6 seats I believe. I think the hybrid max GH is the way to go but if I could not get that trim I would go Mazda unless you need the extra space and gas mileage. The TX cannot be 19000 better than the Grand Highlander!

CX90 has an engine issue because the engineers put the time chain in the back of the engine. This will make working on the engine incredibly difficult. I trust Toyota engineers. I’d like to see the plug-in hybrid for the Highlander.
It's unlikely to need such work.... Maybe after 200,000 Miles.....Maybe.
I can see it being a slightly more realistic concern if it was a timing belt.
@@markallen2984yeah interesting that someone would say an engine has an “issue” simply because of the location of a particular component, especially one that should be able to go a couple hundred thousand miles before needing service. Or was OP referring to an actual issue with the timing assembly perhaps? I haven’t heard of any yet so just curious.
@@markallen2984a Mazda going 200000 .? Not sure about that . Love the car but their history is a gamble as there are lemons in between the good ones . My son in laws , they can’t find the tranny solenoid problem . It’s a gamble driving . Hope that chain never stretches .
