Jigs are one of the best lures because you can fish the super shallow super deep, in clear water and muddy water, fast and slow, on the bottom or swimming. You can do everything with a jig and it can mimic a bluegill, crawfish, shad or anything other object a bass eats.
In this video I want to go in depth when it comes to fishing a jig!
BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.

Thank you Tyler! I have tried jigs occasionally over the past 40 years but never could figure them out. Truthfully I got frustrated and never gave them a chance. A few casts here and there and then tie something else on. After watching a couple of your previous jig videos a few months back I decided that I was going to catch bass on a jig, no matter what. I put 2 rods on the boat with a jig on both. Took a few spares and trailers with me and nothing else. Spent the day casting until I finally caught one. That was back in late August. I have been burning them up on jigs ever since, experimenting with different retrieves, yesterday was an awesome jig day. Mid October I topped 8 pounds (my PB) for the first time ever! I am now obsessed with them after being so frustrated for many years. Simply put, I had to MAKE myself do it! Now this video, the icing on the cake! Thanks again Tyler!!!

I wasn’t gonna say anything but you clearly went after bass’s intelligence with the small brain comment.
I’m a diver and bass are the only fish that without fail will come check us out. Obviously they’re curious, salmon, steelhead, cats, sucker, carp all takeoff.
If I find a crawfish they’ll go nuts after it. Yesterday a bass swam up to me and I had a crawfish jig, a brand new one, tried to get multiple bass to eat it and they just left like they were insulted. Clearly they aren’t dumb despite the brain size!

I felt the same . I decided to give it a good effort without giving up after 15 minutes, and caught 6 good ones in about an hour. Been throwing it a lot since that evening , and loving it!!
I’m still deciding between a straight swim jig, or just a standard jig. Can literally do the same thing with both. Swim jigs tend to have lighter weed guards and hook, but you can really swim any jig. And you can fish a swim jig hopping on bottom. A bass does not know the difference 🤣

@jaiodyssea ya. In a bathtub. You were on to something until that slight.. facts are for me.. I've tried them where people say to. I've tried to flip it. It gets grass all over it... and is useless for "me" my daughter caught a 3lb bass of a jig. I'm not saying you or anyone can't catch 1.. my personal experience I haven't. This was undoubtedly the best video on bass fishing ever made. IMO. Perhaps it because I love jig fishing. I will add this, dead sticking catches a lot of big bass for me but it’s usually in really cold water with pork. I think in cold water that pork trailer matches the slow movement of other natural movements in the water. Great video!!! Thank you.

You nailed my fishing "type" right on the head when you mentioned a fisherman not having experience/confidence in a particular lure type. I have several hundred, if not a thousand, dollars of lures but when I get to my pond it's ALWAYS Booyah tandem spinners (yes only Booyah) or a swimbait like a Storm Wildeye Crappie. The only reason I do this is cause it's what I know and don't have the confidence to learn a new lure. You are 100% correct, I gotta get out of my comfort zone and expand my knowledge to raise my catch average. Thank you good sir, keep the educational videos comin!

    • @richardporter1455
      @richardporter1455 Год назад +1

@OveRated you will. Especially in the beginning. Buy cheap ones to start and just understand that is the learning curve till you start to understand the difference between a branch and a bite. If I lose one now it's usually hung up on someone's broken off line in the brush. Losing lures is part of fishing. But if you are not getting hung up your not fishing where the fish are

I spent years being completely intimidated by jigs. Too many heads, too many trailers, didn’t know what to do with them…I just avoided them. Then one summer something clicked and I decided I was going to fish nothing but a jig until I caught something…bought a couple black and blue jigs (naturally…) and whatever trailer looked good. I don’t even remember. What I *do* remember, and quite vividly, is pulling up to a dock, lobbing it over, watching my slack line start to move off to the side, thinking “?” then swinging away on a nice little bass…on the very first cast. By the end of the first day I realized there was no magical voodoo mojo shtick. You could work it however you wanted (including swimming) and I went from not even wanting to try it to having a new confidence bait IMMEDIATELY.
Fast forward to today…I’m tying my own jigs and I have entire boxes dedicated to them. Anybody who thinks jigs are too much…just buy a 1/2 or (my personal favorite) 3/8 oz jig that appeals to you…same with the trailer…then give it a try. My experience was a fluke…expecting to catch something immediately on any bait is unrealistic and I know that I got lucky.
TLDR: Jigs aren’t intimidating at all. In some ways, they’re the easiest and most versatile baits ever devised.

I can’t ever seem to use jigs effectively. Always getting hung up on something in the rocky river I fish in and lose every single jig I tie on. Tree limbs, rocks, something every single time gets me hung.. I used to catch tons of small bass on small jigs when I was a teenager but still got hung a lot. Lost a lot of fish because of the small hook size. Can’t get anything done with bigger jigs.

I love jigs and swim jigs. I love a t-rig too! The thing I’ve figured out with a t-rig is ( I don’t have issues with a hook up with a t-rig by doing this.) letting the bass have the bait longer than usual, but not to long maybe 5 seconds instead of 2 or 3 seconds. Exactly if your using a bigger soft plastic. I’ve hook so many small bass on a zoom ol monster worm by doing this. Let them swim a few more seconds with it and feeling the weight of the fish and then CRACK! Fish on!! Lol

However, after watching as many of your videos on jigs and Tyler Anderson's as well The Fluke Master I started going out on my kayak with no baits but jigs. The third time out I was disgusted that I had not caught any bass. I decided to change baits and left my jig dragging on the bottom while setting up another rod. I ended up catching an almost 3 lb bass by mistake and the light bulb went off, Now jig fishing is my favorite way to catch bass . Thank you so much!!!

I enjoy your topics, but here I'll respectfully disagree. First, I'll say whatever works for you use it. I had a friend when I was younger that I fished with. I had my pole and my tackle box full of goodies. He had his pole and one purple 1/4 ounce rostertail. I was like hey where is your tackle box. He said i don't need one. This is what works, so it's all I need. I see what he was saying, and although I don't have a big tackle box anymore, I still enjoy catching bass with top water from time to time. What works for me anytime, cast anywhere regardless of weather, is a purple weed less Kelly stripper. I do extremely well with it. I've tried, it seems like everything over the years, and that stupid lure has caught me more bass than anything else. I keep a few of those on me and a trusty top water lure. All my other stuff in my tackle boxes stay home. That's all I need to catch big bass.

the size of these fish is shameful. if I have to hear “that’s a good one” on a sub-5 pounder again I’m going to lose my mind. how this dude has a channel with this caliber of fish is beyond me.

When they come out with a topwater jig, I'll be all over it. Until than it is a coldwater lure (even if it catches more, it is less fun) That said a great video, hope it becomes a series.

There's an old "joke" I heard...a top water jig is what you call a particular skin tone on water ski's. Not saying it's funny, or Im a fan, just saying the only other time I've heard the expression "top water jig"

Never caught a single fish on these jigs. I hate using that lure so much, it's probably a mental block. It's the most boring type of fishing on the planet.

I believe your eye theory, fishing a soft minnow after a few fish it was beat up and lost its eyes,i put a fresh one on same exact lure and i started hitting again.the only difference was the lost eyes. Who really knows but seems reasonable to me..

I've found this year up north throughout the fall transition, that no matter where I'm fishing, the bass always stick with structure. And any piece of vegetation that still has any green to it. But the bigger bass were on structure. Hope this helps some people.

When would you use a Texas rig over a jig? Sounds like it's best to always use a jig.

When a fish jumps you have a stiffer rod you see that slack you can feel it you really have to start cranking that reel really fast it works

    Tyler,
Your videos are good but would be great but for one thing. Slow down, catch your breath this appears to be a production problem and makes our heads spend.
Please, work on this so we can continue to watch your videos, I feel like I’m in a race while watching.
Please consider my suggestion, and don’t rush so much. Sincerely, Larry

Ur wrong , nobody wants to watch a person stare at a computer ,,,,, on TV, it's about the decision of the angler , not a computer ,,, fans r loosing interest , that means ur total payout is getting less , , fishing aint stearin at a computer screen ,, it's just like Nascar ,, no fun for the spectators ,,,,,,, thank u
