I love fishing a football jig in the local canals. There's almost no structure in them except the weeds on the bottom in the center. I was new to fishing a jig and kept getting hung up in the weeds, so thinking I wasn't going to get bit I yanked the jig free of the weeds and all of a sudden the weeds pulled back...I thought, wait a second, weeds don't pull back! My first catch on that jig was a large mouth at 6lbs 12 oz! Great info, thanks for sharing!

Before using a jig, I watched the guy who owned the boat that I was fishing with a black/blu jig with an uncle Josh pork rind during pre spawn. He caught 3 fish between 5 and 10 pounds within a half hour. Along with a spinner bait, it's truly a big bass jig.

The jig is my nemesis.... I simply can't get bite on this lure..... As much as I try, I just don't have any confidence in catching fish off this bait.. And, I fail to see how jig fisherman can say drop shotting is slow/dull.... Holy moly, I would say the exact same is true for jig fishing. Good video. I keep throwing it and keep watching videos like this to see if I can find a way to get bite on a jig.

I watched your other video on stroking jigs. While watching it I thought that’s exactly how I fish it. I guess I’m doing it right. I usually fish it like that in weeds, kinda like when you pop a lure out of the weeds when it gets stuck. I’ve never really been a dragger only shorter pops in rocks. I’ll have to give those a try. I really like watching your channel because your a northern guy and I’m from Connecticut. Not that bass are different but the techniques seem to be a little different. I feel northern style’s need to have a bit more finesse. When I watch and try the southern stuff I just can’t seem to get a lot of it to work.

Sweet video. I've been using a football jig and casting jig to burn the flats. I have a 8:3:1 reel. I turn the handle super fast for half a rotation or a full rotation. Then I let it sit. So the jig looks like a fast tadpole or guppy. They react with a fast bite, then I pause it when I feel them bite, watch the line move, then set the hook.

Id love to see one on spinnerbaits, that is one bait I love to fish, and I do alot, but for me its the one bait I pretty much just chuck and wind, maybe a twitch or 2 through the whole retrieve. It certainly works but I would love to hear other ways. IMHO, the most fun way to fish. Although I’ve altered size and profile over the years due to tougher bites from over fishing, but the jig is will will probably always be my go to. .The only time I shy away from a jig is in heavy weed. By me it’s milfoil, contain, pondweed, hydride, etc. Then I will use a T-Rig that closely matches a jig. Like a skirted double tail grim or a beaver or craw type bait. Just to keep from picking up the weed.

Do the same retrieves work in cold water or do you slow it down and keep it on the bottom?

Tell you what Matt from one of your old jig videos how you give the jig a double pop on semi slack line, iv been applying this to my retrieves and man do I get some vicious strikes doing that, it’s not as much as stroking the jig more like a double pop. Keep up the great content

I just watched your Wisconsin trip and you was using a left hand reel while pitching a jig to wood? In this video you're using a right hand reel retrieve. Are you ambidextrous with fishing reels?

By far my favorite lure to catch fish... One question.... vertical or horizontal line tie...? I feel the vertical line tie allows the line not to get frayed so easily...thoughts... Happy 4th of July!!!

I get many bites on a jig. But I lose so many of them when they go airborne. Just chuck the jigs out of their mouths. Tried all sorts of tricks. Mainly very slow retrieve to reduce the chance of them jumping. But this is far and away my worst bait for landing. But one of the highest for strikes. Would love to see some content on how to keep them on after the strike and hook set.

I've had the same issue and then saw Randy Blaukat have a video on how to trim the weed guard. After trimming the guard, I rarely lost any fish and the jig is still weedless.

Try holding your rod tip lower to the water when you're fighting the fish and don't waste time bringing it in
