Great advice . Most anglers were taught like you 1st. Said Matt to cast it out + let drop straight down to bottom + most fish hit on the fall like we were taught . + bring it up + fall again. Now 3 different ways to experiment with a ned rig . Excellent information.
Matt, i am part of that 90% most of the time and these videos are MORE than valuable to me. I am not offended because it has helped me a LOT, even here in South Africa. Stunning channel and video.
Your 3rd retrieve is what works for me, on the smallmouth near me. I was glad to hear you were doing this too, I thought I was weird. Or doing something wrong. Catching huge numbers like this! Like 15-20 bass in 4 hours. I use the ocho in GP, in one lake and morning dawn in the other. What I have noticed about my smallies, they want it moving. Even my top waters, any pause turns them away. A slow steady retrieve makes them commit. Great video!
Matt, I just got into Ned Rig. I used the first retrieve today and first cast, got a bass ! So awesome. Thank you so much for your teachings and experience. You and one other youtuber I focus on than any other to learn bass fishing. Thank you so much, Matt ! Peace

Thank you for finally explaining the intention of the Ned rig. Most people teach dragging on the bottom. Not denying that works, but a shaky head already does that. Great explanation of the correct ways to Ned

I learned your 'returning the bail manually+ giving the line a tug' move from Hank Parker several decades ago. Used to have a mess of line every other day from my spinning reels. Now, we fish all week with no tangles! I'm certainly trying your different Ned Rig techniques this year too.👍
This is truelly an excellent video!! Matt, your channel is really one of the very best. Similar to intuitive angling. Stunning content!! PLEASE don't stop making us better anglers.
I threw a ned rig for the first time today and I caught 3 bass in 5 casts. I’m sure tomorrow with this information I’m gunna be whacking them thank you!
Great video. I purchased some motor oil green/red about 4 years ago. Never caught any fish so I put them away. So today, I forced myself to fish them again. Caught 4 fish. All 4 hit immediately when the bait first hit the water. 91 degrees outside at noon on very small, block long reservoir.
Thank you Matt I hate Ned rig fishing it's too slow for me so a couple of these will at least speed it up a bit lol I'm really liking your channel and how you actually show these retrieve techniques
Matt, so simple but makes total sense! Thanks for all you do man! Can’t wait to get up north and fish for some smallies! I feel like I have a better shot now!

Good job Matt. Don’t worry about the naysayers who want to always be critical. No matter what video you post, I’m going to watch it regardless of the title or thumbnail
Awesome video! It's funny cause I have tried similar techniques jig fishing and been successful, primarily cause jigs are my goto, but I never considered these techniques with the ned! I was one of those guys dragging it along! And there are so many times fishing these northern clear lakes where I could've been so much more successful going more finesse. Thanks for this Matt!
Matt, I've been fishing the Ned rig 4-5 years in Maine. The Z-Man TRD in Canada Craw color seems to lure em in. My rod/reel/line are pretty much identical to yours. Been slaying em on light wire hooks on the smaller side.
I've heard variations of your comment, but that's the best i've heard it said (the bass don't want to eat it necessarily, but just can't help grabbing it). Thanks for the tips..... great mental image on this one. Maybe it's simiilar to why dogs chase cars? :)
Great video thank for the different techniques! Ever try casting out and let sink to bottom and then reel in slack and then slowly raise rod tip up. On the way up Is when ill feel the bite and if nothing bites let it drop to the bottom, reel in slack and slowly raise rod tip again. I found this works really well for me.
Good stuff!!! This will help me with a bait that I have little to no confidence in as those techniques fit. How I fish some of my other finesse techniques. Thanks for sharing!
My best retrieve is the hop technique and that swim retrieve gets me soooo many northerns. Deep weed lines like Lake Minnetonka I say the hop/pop method is my go to.
I use the same techniques with a senko on a texas rig. Once I realized most of my bites were on the initial fall I changed up to spend more time dropping it on locations likely to have fish and less time on the retrieve.
I just started fishing the Ned rig and they were destroying it back to back cast. This video was very informative and I’m excited to hit a pond right now to throw 3 different colors of it. This channel is awesome bro👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 Good ol Oklahoma pond fishing I luv it
Cool... I didnt know that the third retrieve gave a swimming action... neat. The first 2 is exactly the retrieves I use for deep fishing a tube 18-22 fow, bottom radius of the drop off for summer pattern inland lake largemouth. Great info as always, thanks for your vids and time.
Good video as usual on the retrieves. That said the " Ned " rig is nothing but a short jig worm but the fishing industry has hyped this u as some sort of revolutionary technique. I was throwing 3" Senko's, smallie Beavers and small ring worms on 1/16 oz. gopher mushroom heads years before the " Ned " rig became a thing along with a lot of anglers. That said it's now a popular way to fish which bums me out as it was a secret weapon.
Thank you for these videos and I like the name it's eye gabbing been catfishing for a couple years but I am just getting into bass fishing and these videos shed light on techniques that I've been searching for
Great video, Matt!!👊🏻Always enjoy different ways to present a bait. Who cares if I throw it one way always good to know other ways as well!!👍🏻Keep these videos coming!!!!Stay Safe & God Bless!!!
Good stuff Matt the moving retrieve I bet is why z man has a whole bunch of baitfish color's in the ned worm . Excellent video Matt I really liked the tube bait retrieve video to. It's important to know your retrieve.
I start with a slow drag, then I move to the steady retrieve, and then I’ll move to just letting the river kind of bump it around and keeping a tight light. All work at different times. I also like using the Missile Ned Bomb and Strike King Ned Cut’r because they have little tail like backsides. Nice profile.
@@MattStefanFishing I forgot to mention very well explained. I've heard some of these retrieves before but you made them clear! And I was very amused that folks are "complaining" your "statistics" (90%) were not thoroughly researched and peer reviewed....🤣
Those Z Man baits should be super effective for flounder. The size is perfect and the stand up action should be awesome. A little scent added ought to be even better. I have a hard time getting them straight in the jig heads compared to other plastics but they are tough.
I was under the impression that method 3, was the basic way to fish a ned LOL. It's the way I learned anyway and the way I have been most successful with. I can't imagine, just casting and retrieving with a ned when there are much better baits for that purpose. I go fairly slow with mine, with a little bit of the two and three techniques mixed, pretty much how I fish a wacky worm, but with less energy (if that makes sense). Let it fall, pop it a couple of times, then slowly reel it across whatever I am fishing and repeat the process until I reel it in. And yes, the vast majority of the time, most of my strikes always come after I pop it off the bottom and let it fall again.
I fully agree, you have to play with your presentation till you develop what they want. Been fishing finesse for 20+ years, and have always played with speed, tempo, and type of movements. Even bugguns will eat the little baits.
I ditched spinning gear and had massive success with BFS setup this Fall on southern Wisconsin. It's not always about the retrieve but also the color. Keep an eye on what the bait fish look like and try and use a color that matches what they are eating.
Man I was struggling to get smallies the other day. They wouldn’t even take live crawdads. I busted out the ole Ned rig and they couldn’t resist. Popping off of rock structure drove em crazy. 😂 Love these videos, Matt. Keep ‘em coming. 🤙🤙🤙
I'll be honest, I have mixed feelings about the Ned because I just don't get a lot of bites with it. I have typically retrieved it like a pendulum; cast it, let it hit bottom, lift my rod slowly and let it swim back until it hits bottom, and repeat. Now I have some other retrieves to try and I'm hoping to make the Ned more useful for me. Thanks Matt!
I combine dragging with sometimes a small hop and pauses in between. Today in the Netherlands i was fishing a big bridge and there where a lot of fisherman beating the bridge also a lot of bank anglers the pressure is very high especially now the fall is starting. I was fishing from the bank on a spot where i catched a big 50cm perch the day before. But now there where a few float tube guys fishing the spot for big perch and zander. After them a few boat anglers also tried they all didn't get bit. When it was getting later i tried again on the spot with a trd finesse crawz on a 2.5gram nedhead i throwed it out in the middle where there it is about 15 to 20 feet deep and maked 3 small hops and let it sit for 5 seconds then i did it again. After this i dragged it really slow for about 5 reel handle turns and let it sit still for 20 seconds this is when a big perch grabbed it of the bottom and i feel the fish but waited to set the hook and it came off. I let it fall and sit for 5 sec then i do a small hop and it got attacked strangely and i could not really set the hook so i do 1 more hop, and again feeling weird attacks so another hop some weird nibbles. I now slowly drag it over some rocks and feel pressure i reel fast to set the hook and i got the fish a big perch that is 53cm and 2.8kg. I find it funny that after extreme slow drags and letting the bait soak maked the fish commit to the bait until the bait was almost at my feet! While you could hop a ned on this spot all day and they won't react to this the drag and deadstick triggerd something in this big perch that really maked the fish commit! So i still feel that sometimes dragging and deadsticking can be better than letting the bait fall or hopping it. just gotta let the fish tell what they want. Offcourse the other retrieves can cover more water. But when you are on a high pressured spot where eveyone is hopping baits they can get tired of things hopping and falling. So on a spot where you know there must be some big bass fishing it slower and dragging it with occasional small hops can trigger a bite no one is getting.
In my pond which averages 15-25 feet, I find just hopping (popping) it off the bottom especially near ledges, is the most productive for largemouth. I do catch peacock bass on the slow retrieve 😉
Hey Matt could you do a video or just tell me what the difference in Pro Tour,Toyota series because it confuses me I don’t know why there are different MLF series or tournaments
The "inventor" of the ned rig says he basically never lets it hit bottom for his most productive retrieve, so you are correct when you say anglers that are just dragging it on the bottom are fishing it totally wrong. He also says if you can feel the bait when retrieving, the jighead is too heavy. From what I've seen, the Ned rig(when fished like it was intended) works much like how a weightless senko rig entices strikes with its gliding/fluttering fall, but you can fish it at a faster pace and have that gliding presentation in front of fish multiple times per retrieve instead of just on the initial fall.
Never fished one, threw it on my UL spinner, walked to the neighborhood pond and caught one on the 3rd cast with your teachings. Thank you!

Awesome stuff! Next if could do tubes! If already haven't.
good topic!
Thanks for sharing!
Great video, some background noise that was causing some concern, most likely being outside in that area. Good videos , thanks
Sorry about that
In my pond which averages 15-25 feet, I find just hopping (popping) it off the bottom especially near ledges, is the most productive for largemouth. I do catch peacock bass on the slow retrieve 😉
peacock! that would be fun!
Hey Matt could you do a video or just tell me what the difference in Pro Tour,Toyota series because it confuses me I don’t know why there are different MLF series or tournaments
pro circuit is a level above the toyoata series. you need to be in the top 5 of a toyota series division to qualify for the pro circuit
Berkley should sell those powerbait skirts separately so people can use whatever jig heads they like but still have those awesome skirts!
agreed
There’s bad clickbait and good clickbait. I always watch these videos!
thanks! thats how i feel!
Can you post a video, how to drive your boat across the lake? This is another great video, glad you didn’t get run over.
haha!
Definitely gonna try only luck I’ve had is with a pendulum sort of like a hair jig
go for it
Ned rig was my go to bait to avoid a skunk. Then I quit throwing it for some reason. Need to tie it back on.
tie it on!
Great Video, I have never tried the 1st retrieve, but do use the 2nd two. I'll try the 1st one this weekend. Thanks.
good luck!
The "inventor" of the ned rig says he basically never lets it hit bottom for his most productive retrieve, so you are correct when you say anglers that are just dragging it on the bottom are fishing it totally wrong. He also says if you can feel the bait when retrieving, the jighead is too heavy. From what I've seen, the Ned rig(when fished like it was intended) works much like how a weightless senko rig entices strikes with its gliding/fluttering fall, but you can fish it at a faster pace and have that gliding presentation in front of fish multiple times per retrieve instead of just on the initial fall.
awesome! thanks for sharing!
Matt you are doing a great job keep it up.
thanks!
My favorite all time bait, caught my first bass on it. I learned a lot about it from your video, thank you.
its a great bait!
Very good info, Matt
Glad it was helpful!
