Thank you for actually talking about fishing for bass on your bass fishing channel! So tired of the 2 and 3 hour videos on the FFS debate and the tournament organization drama. Some of us just wanna catch some fish, and that's where BassFishingHQ comes in.
That's why I've always believed in live bait but I've even used earthworms nightcrawlers out there and didn't even catch a bluegill. You're supposed to cast those out in the side of sit, not even live baits are biting
I've fished over 50 years and have never caught a bass on a jig. Smh I live in Florida now and STILL haven't caught one with a jig. Fished for over 5 hours with a finesse jig, not even a bite. Picked up a spinnerbait and bam, bam ,bam, 3 bass in the place I fished the Bitsy Bug. Smh
Hank Parker: "if you want to be a great bass fisherman, you've got to learn to love the jig." I'm a believer. So glad you mentioned the Bitsy Bug, that $2 gem is a fishing machine and catches em everywhere.
Awesome video. I used to struggle with a jig but now it stays on the deck of my boat and I am a primarily dominant jig fisherman. It stays in my hand. People overthink fishing a jig. Fish it like you fish a shaky head starting out. Drag it very very slow. If you see a bass on livescope. Drop it on its head. If it’s bass it will follow it to the bottom or catch it on the fall. Other than that if they don’t bite immediately drag it very slowly. That’s the key just slow down. Once you get confident then try hopping a jig and skipping docks etc. for starters just find some rock bank with a ballhead jig and a zoom creepy crawler greenpumpkin for both and go to town.
The advice you gave that was about starting small and building up confidence in a bait is some of the best advice I’ve heard for all types of fishing. I just realized how much I’ve done that without even knowing.
I honestly feel the slowness and pausing retrieve style is what makes jigs effective, along with short hops. But you can have the same success doing that method using a various plastics such as a tube, craw, worm, lizard, curly tail grub, etc.
At 60 years old I've come to realize patience and persistence pays off when jig fishing. Have been using the Bitsy Flip with and without a chunk trailer for years. Buy them by the handful at Walmart because here in South Louisiana you will get them hung up pitchin' into the good stuff! To be honest, they are about the only jig I use anymore. Years ago when I quit tournament fishing is when I really started enjoying the sport so much more and after over 50 years of dedicated fishing...I still LOVE IT!!
Caught bass with a jig for the first time today. Discovered I was getting hits in 2 ways bass thinking it was food and invading the basses space pissing it off. Watched a bass body blow and whip my jig with it's tail. Went back to that spot after a little time and it bit and I caught it. Very versatile also caught the biggest drum I've ever caught in my life.
Thanx Tyler. Jig bites are not always felt. I was fishing a grass line years ago and boated 2 or 3 bass out of there. Thought I had grass on my jig and reeled in to find a 3lber just had the jig in his mouth and never moved a fin. Tryed a quick hook set and missed. That shook my jig confidence for the rest of the year. Set the hook more. If you already set the hook alot set it even more. Best jig tip!
Jigs and top water were the two biggest presentations I was inexperienced with and over the last few years, I have dedicated days and weeks to fishing both of them exclusively to help me get more confidence in them. Now they are two that I absolutely love to throw and have grown much more confident. As always, your videos are great when it comes to teaching aspects of bass fishing.
That’s awesome! Please don’t think you have to wait though for a certain time of year. You can fish a jig tomorrow (as long as your not iced over). In open water jigs can be a 365 day a year bait. And like Tyler said lock it in your hand. Good luck!
I was trying to teach a young angler on how to fish a jig years ago. I told him to just have patience and keep working it. Just about every time I turned around, he was back to throwing what he was confrontable fishing with. This young angler displayed no patience to keep fishing with the jig. I decided to take every rod from his reach except that jig rod setup, and made him fish with it until he caught his first fish. This young angler happened to be my son. The more he fished with a jig the better he got on catching fish with it. Tell this day, he always has a jig rigged up when we fish together.
Haha. I liked how you worded it. Love a little father son fishing. Wish my dad had more time to take me out. Usually it’s just me and my brothers and he is working. Take your son out as much as you can, not even to fish but just to do something
Started locking a jig in my hand and it's been a fun experience. 1 bass on a new lure for me is as rewarding as 5 bass on one I'm already confident with.
Great video !! This is probably the best jig video. I learned how to cast with the bitsy bug. For me the 1/4oz was perfect weight to learn on and they’re relatively inexpensive. I caught a fish on my first non backlashed cast and been fishing jigs since. I learned of BOSS jigs from another one of your videos. So now with BOSS and skirting material, i make my own skirts. I like green pumpkin / brown, amber pumpkin/ purple, and and white. Boss has allowed me to keep a box full of finesse, swim, and archy heads. I’ve added two picasso jigs to my box lately because they track a bit better in open water settings. I like the BBB yo daddy as a trailer, covers all basis for me. Can swim it, flip it or cut the claws for a 3” stick bait look. When I got a new lake I bring one rod and the boss swim jig head. Allows me to cover water quickly and to pitch to cover.
I forced myself to learn how to fish a jig 2 years ago. Id watch your videos along with other channels and now I'd say it's my favorite way to fish besides top water
The Bitsy Bug is a very good jig. For a trailer I cut a little off of a Zoom Lil' Critter Craw, it looks really good as a trailer and it catches fish. Really good video.
I’ve had a bad relationship with jig lures until this video and I’ve seen a lot of them after watching this one and followed the tips I landed several and really enjoy throwing jigs now
I'm new to fishing kind of and started using jigs like a year ago. I'm addicted. Football or bitzy bug jig is my favor. I caught my first bass that was 13 inches.
Thank you very helpful 👍 i was thinking where you said give 15 - 20 sec wait about 1/2 through retrieve , after that give it a couple hard jerks ??? I dont know your the pro..... " Dont complicate " right 👍
I’ve never used a black and blue lure let alone a jig….watched one of your vids and went and got the strike king blue jig…..put a rage craw on it….first cast, BAM! Small mouth bass my son reeled in! Thanks!
I think the biggest tip for recognizing a bite for a jig, and you indirectly mentioned this in the video, is WATCH YOUR LINE. A majority of my jig bites, I'm fishing cover and just feel weight. I look where my line enters the water and if it's moving I set the hook. I can't tell you how many fish I've caught on a jig that way.
I use the Bitsy Flip some but I can’t stand any jig with a bronze hook, always use a jig with a quality hook has been my thing and I’ve had pretty good luck. Good video
I have caught Cod, Mackrell, Salmon, Grayling, Pike, Trout, Perch... almost all species I have tried to catch (and few other), in everything from 120m deep water next to a wreck outside coast of northern Norway to 20cm (8") deep creek rapid or 50m deep frozen mountain lake in northern Sweden. just change the size type and Collour and adapt technique slightly and you are reasonably likely to get something. also expect surprises, I have had perch bite a 150mm (6") intended for pike and a large trout (just under 5kg) bite a 40mm grub I was using fishing for grayling in a shallow stretch of a river using UL gear, one of my most memorable fishing moments.
While I do love them and have probably 100 of them, deep water and a Bitsy Bug don't mix so well. So start pretty shallow. Be slow and be patient. Feel and pay attention to the bottom composition as you drag your jig along, that will tell you what's down there. Especially from the bank, this can almost be as good as a sonar unit. Don't get cutesy with it; 4 colors is all you need at most - white, black (Or black/blue), green, and brown. Those will catch fish in 100% of the fisheries that have bass. And above all - stick with it!
Funny you just made this video. I just got off the lake and the only thing they’d bite was a green pumpkin swim jig with a craw style trailer. It was all off shore in 40-50 ft of water and I watched them on live scope ignore are just follow swim baits, lipless and deep dive cranks, drop shot worm and minnow and a A-Rig. Dropped in the jig and it was like flipping a switch on. Great video thanks.
Im a die hard strike king guy. However with the bitsy jig i think they need a lil beefier hook. Just a lil bit. The structure jig is the absolute best jog on the market as far as dragging and flipping. The line tie and hook gap are awesome. But i make my own jigs. Just because im picky. Lol.
This is facts. I struggled with using a jig. Out of the blue one day I decided to use a finesse jig one day and got hit. After that learned what trailer and colors to use. My basic colors are just watermelon, green pumpkin and black/blue they will always get bit.
terrific vid, Tyler. Speaking of starting fishing jigs and going finesse…the tightrope is an awesome lightweight jig and can even be fished on spinning. I remember yrs ago when I first started jig fishing. It was like dragging a mop when compared to shakey head. lol. It took some time but newbies will love it in time!👍
I never was a let the bait soak or dead stick the bait fisherman. Was fishing yesterday and getting skunked. I decided to cast, let the lure sink, let it sit for a short while and then start working it. Next time I stopped the bait, I shook it a couple of times and let it sit. It's cold so I know they're not aggressive. Just letting the bait sit there for a while I got bit! Wholly crap, dead sticking works, especially in cold water! Nice 4 pounder on a Ned rig.
Great video, as always, and as a newer bass angler, I can honestly say I have learned so much from your videos. It's funny you posted this video now as I actually just caught my first bass on a jig yesterday (black & blue flipping w/green pumpkin rage craw). It wasn't my pb, but it was a 3.5 pounder, which is large for my area (deep south Louisiana). I will be getting some of your merch soon, but had a question about your sun gloves, which is, do they hold up well in the cold as I'm looking for some good cold weather gloves.
A good description of a jig bite was in a mid 70's Bass Master magazine: "It feels like a rain drop hitting the bill of your cap." That is exactly what it felt like when I caught my PB an 11 lb. 2 oz. largemouth in Alabama.
I think the biggest factor with lack of jig success actually comes well before any attempt. I avoided jigs for YEARS…like, decades almost. It just seemed like too much…this head style, that trailer, the weights and colors…for whatever reason, it seemed like “a bait the pros use”. Then during one of my week-long summer trips I decided I was only going to throw a jig until I caught something. Picked up an unremarkable jig and a trailer that appealed to me, got out onto the water, tossed it under the first dock I pulled up to, noticed my line was moving to the *side* for some reason, set the hook and landed a fish ON THE FIRST CAST. It was completely ridiculous…all these years of avoiding jigs for what? Fast forward to now, I tie my own jigs and have several dedicated, high end setups. Breaking the ice and realizing, on a personal level, that jigs aren’t mysterious and weird is the first step. My experience was a fluke and a stroke of good luck since the jig bite was apparently on fire that day. But whatever the bait…jigs, frogs, jerkbaits…if you just say “right, I’m only gonna fish these until I get something” (with frogs, you might wanna wait until the bluegill spawn lol), you’re doing yourself a HUGE favor and expanding your horizons.
I guess you could say that i fall under the category of fishermen that lack confidence in Jig fishing. I know they are a phenominal bait and a proven bait. Being here in Florida, i want to get more confident with a Jig, but just can't discipline myself to just pick it up and throw it. I watch videos and stuff but i lack in the WHERES & WHENS, to throw one. I have done my frontyard seminar with pitching it into a 5 Gal bucket and etc, but in my opinion, its ALOT different when pitching a jig, when on the ground/level area as opposed to from the front deck of my boat. Tyler, if you could help me out a bit and maybe give me a couple scenarios here in florida, i would greatly appreciate it.
A good rule of thumb for starting off is to try using a jig wherever you would normally throw a texas rig. The way you fish a jig is very similar to how you would a Texas rig. The only difference is that jigs give a much bulkier and flashier presentation. And it's that extra flare that gets you the bite when a standard texas rig might not. Trust me, once you get your first Jig fish, something just clicks, and It's like you can't put it down.
When I finally started catching bass it was on a jig. I didn't understand how it worked, all I knew was that I was getting bit nearly every time I threw one!
I don't know if it's an Ohio thing or not but here in east central Ohio the bitsy bug jig with a zoom jr. chunk is a bass catching combo and not just small bass. Great tips and great video as always.
You would think I crush them with a jig if you saw my jig box, but for me it's one of those " I know they always catch them" baits, not a " I can catch them with it" bait
I lack confidence in jig skirts. It seems like every jig I buy ends up falling apart after 1 or 2 years. I love bitsybugs, but the band that holds the skirts on just disintegrates. Do you have a tutorial on skirts? I'd love to learn to hand tie the skirts on like the madbite spinnerbates.
The number 1 thing I wish RUclipsrs would say during their videos is, “Get your a** out there and fish!” I meet so many people that say they fish and then admit they only fished 8 times last year. GO FISHING!! Fish and fail so many times that you want to cry throw all your gear overboard. Then go fishing again the next day.
Timely video for me. My goal for 2024 is to gain confidence and proficiency with a jig (flipping, football, and finesse). If I catch my PB on a jig, I might reward myself with a nicer jig rod.
If I only stayed with my original Tex rig finesse worm and jig with creature trailer, and never bought another lure, I would definitely would have had much more productive fishing outings 🤷🏻♂️🤣
I literally couldn't catch fish with a jig until one day at my father in laws pond i caught one. Now i catch them with jigs all the time. Just keep using them
I don't like jigs because it doesn't matter what style head I use, or where I use it, it always gets hung. 1 out or 5 casts it gets hung so bad I have to break it off
@@alexkaalberg1969yes, I've had good luck with white swim jig with a 3.3 Keitech paddle tail trailer. That should help slow the Sink and the action will displace some water so the fish can find it in muddy/stained conditions.
I can’t keep a jig on my line. I’ve lost every jig I’ve ever thrown except for 1. The last time I used a jig, I lost 4 jigs, in 4 casts, in 4 different areas. I am not joking. Lol
Hi, I'm curious and don't mean this as negative at all but a learning moment for me. We're or are you a pro fisherman turned you tube marketer. Or are you just a pure you tube marketer who likes to fish? I only ask because many young kids want to pro fish but I think there is much more money in you tube channels and fishing clothes. Thought?
I was never a “pro” in my mind. Fished the Bassmaster Opens for about 6 years and have fished tournaments since I was 15. There is money in both but they are both hard careers at the same time. If you want to be a pro these days…you definitely need to understand social media
What do you do if you're fishing a tidal river and the bottom is that mucky mud nonsense? I swear even a 3/8oz jig is impossible to use because you feel that damn suction every time you go to hop it. Makes me think the lure is actually settling down in the mud, no way a bass finds it.
Want to learn a new bait... take only that bait out of the box and fish it for weeks, in every condition and evey location. Back in the early 80's, there wasn't any internet to watch, bass fishing was still coming on. BASS wasn't even on the West Coast yet.. you just fished that bait everywhere until you were consistently catching fish with it. Nobody shared the "secret", you just had to learn by fishing it. Winners were asked how they caught thier fish... often lied about the type lure or technique, the following week may have been another tournament on that same lake.... but that last tip, weld that lure to your hand. TRUE! Those become the go-to bait.
Thank you for actually talking about fishing for bass on your bass fishing channel! So tired of the 2 and 3 hour videos on the FFS debate and the tournament organization drama. Some of us just wanna catch some fish, and that's where BassFishingHQ comes in.
Holy Jesus! You read my mind.
hq and tactical bassin🙌
Ya'll need to takes notes on this vid..... Been fishing 50 years now... yes I'm old and this vid nails it, applys to any lure/technique
I agree 💯
That's why I've always believed in live bait but I've even used earthworms nightcrawlers out there and didn't even catch a bluegill. You're supposed to cast those out in the side of sit, not even live baits are biting
He's right about the finese jigs. I make my own up with Boss rock walker jigheads. You gotta get them back in the boat to successfully fish them!
When I wanted to learn to fish a jig … my mentor told me to take everything else out of the boat and go fishing …it worked :)
Smh

I caught my first bass on a jig. It also happened to be my PB! 7.5 lbs. I can't go fishing without a jig. ✌🏾🎣
Appreciate your tips bro you helped me cast my bait caster today alot better without backlash
Caught bass with a jig for the first time today. Discovered I was getting hits in 2 ways bass thinking it was food and invading the basses space pissing it off. Watched a bass body blow and whip my jig with it's tail. Went back to that spot after a little time and it bit and I caught it. Tyler,
Great content as always! I am going to commit to using jigs this coming year. Thank you for keeping it real

Well said!
Great video Tyler! I learn so much from you, and I appreciate how you explain the techniques you are teaching!
Just got my bass hat...great video,I struggle with jigs myself

The Bitsy Bug is a very good jig. For a trailer I cut a little off of a Zoom Lil' Critter Craw, it looks really good as a trailer and it catches fish.
Really good video.
Busty bug slays them for me. That blue/green one you were showing paired with the Berkley powerbait 2.75 green pumpkin blue meaty chunk is dynamite
Great content and advice on the jigs. I always have 2 jig rods on the boat when I’m on the water. Always excellent advice. Good luck 🍀
Excellent Tyler it's a goal for me in spring to get better with a jig. Thanks for the Great information!
Thank you very helpful 👍 i was thinking where you said give 15 - 20 sec wait about 1/2 through retrieve , after that give it a couple hard jerks ??? I dont know your the pro..... " Dont complicate " right 👍
Very helpful video. I have very little confidence in jigs bit will ise your advice for sure. Thanks for a great video and channel.
I’ve never used a black and blue lure let alone a jig….watched one of your vids and went and got the strike king blue jig…..put a rage craw on it….first cast, BAM! Small mouth bass my son reeled in! Thanks!

I am another old timer. All great information put out for all new to old fishermen.
While I do love them and have probably 100 of them, deep water and a Bitsy Bug don't mix so well. So start pretty shallow. Be slow and be patient. Good job teaching the basics. 👍🏼
I like to keep the jig moving even if it’s very slowly, that way when you feel any resistance you know that the bass has the lure in its mouth.
Thanks for a very informative video man, this really make sense. 😊
Tyler great info. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks man! I always love your videos! Super helpful stuff!
What’s the deal with a Ned jig dont hear to much about it seems like a cool idea does it work
Just ordered two hats and the sun gloves. Keep those videos coming brother!
What rod and reel setup is best for jigs?
First make sure you are around bass! Then on every cast, work your jig as if a bass is always looking at it. It will build confedence.
GD I love everything about fishing a jig. I’ll fish it for hours with various methods/retrieves and not get tired of it. Can never get enough tips!
When I finally started catching bass it was on a jig. I didn't understand how it worked, all I knew was that I was getting bit nearly every time I threw one!
Great video, thanks
What set up should I use, useing the kitech jig but been losing a lot of fish on them
When you throw a jig you learn whats on the bottom you learn how deep the lake is trying to get my kid to do it
Good video. I learned some things.
Great vid thanks 💪🏼 🎣
I don't know if it's an Ohio thing or not but here in east central Ohio the bitsy bug jig with a zoom jr. chunk is a bass catching combo and not just small bass. Great tips and great video as always.
You would think I crush them with a jig if you saw my jig box, but for me it's one of those " I know they always catch them" baits, not a " I can catch them with it" bait
I need low crown hats
I would take a jig over any other lure. Definitely my confidence bait.
Timely video for me. My goal for 2024 is to gain confidence and proficiency with a jig (flipping, football, and finesse). If I catch my PB on a jig, I might reward myself with a nicer jig rod.
The two times (count em, two) I’ve gotten a jig bite…I had no idea it was a bite. I thought I was stuck on a rock 😅
I keep getting a finesse peanut butterjelly finesse jig . I keep fishing til it gets hung . No fish yet.
I love jigs and I’m not afraid to say it!
From a jig guy, those are good tips
...#1 reason is exactly that, confidence.
New sub good stuff
Took me 3 years to get comfortable throwing a jig of any sort. I wasn't even doing it wrong. Just needed to keep at it and catch a couple
Strike King Bitsy Bug Jig with a Zoom Super Chunk Jr Trailer is such an Ohio bass fishing staple.
1 out or 5 casts it gets hung so bad I have to break it off
I like big jigs and I can not lie
Casting accuracy is my problem.
Small football jigs work best for me
Can't really fish a jig at the lake I fish at since there is a bunch of weeds that are the slimy kind.
Try throwing a swim jig, keep up a bit in the water column.
@@kevingenaw8241 Do swim jigs work good in dirty water?
@@alexkaalberg1969yes, I've had good luck with white swim jig with a 3.3 Keitech paddle tail trailer. That should help slow the Sink and the action will displace some water so the fish can find it in muddy/stained conditions.
@@kevingenaw8241 Cool. Thanks for the info. The more information you have as a bass fisherman, the better.
Jigs are the only baits I do have confidence in 😂..guess (hopefully) the learning curve is all down hill from here
Brown heads in San Diego chief and green blk
I don’t struggle with jigs. It’s the only bait I can catch a bass on. I struggle with everything else.
I can’t keep a jig on my line. I’ve lost every jig I’ve ever thrown except for 1. The last time I used a jig, I lost 4 jigs, in 4 casts, in 4 different areas. I am not joking. Lol
I now make and tie my own jigs,BUT the bits bug catches fish. From immature to lunkers.
Number one thing to do when fishing a jig is SLOW DOWN! Most people try to fish a jig to fast!
I can’t flip without backlash
No matter what size 😢
Takes a lot of practice. Don’t give up.
@BassFishingHQ thanks for your input..and thanks for the tip on the bitsy bug. Have a great Christmas
@@corefishing4858 merry Christmas!
@BassFishingHQ if you are ever out in Vegas let me know. I have a nice rig and we can go fish Mead. Would love to learn from you. Take care
I´ve los a total of 9 gigs and that a lot with a mexican wage...sighs not even a nibble. No rock bottom btw.
Keren bosku❤
I'm not good at it☹️ but i buy it just to say"Yes i got a Jig" 🤫🤫🤫
👍
