Can I just say the new designs for Hades, Persephone, Aphrodite and basically most of gods that appear here are amazing, especially Hades, that new look is a massive upgrade, all those small details and small changes really make a difference
(Edit) 😮 That, that is a lot of likes, thanks everyone
Nah, hades was already perfekt
Exactly! They look so gorgeous!!
@@abbycollins I also thing Artemis is an improvement, from what I remember the old look was kind of generic looking, but this design is a lot more unique, I hope we see some redesigns for the Norse Gods
@@Mecha-tron201Artemis has GOT to be my favourite redesign by far she looks like she’d actually belong in the woods lol
Honestly I always loved how the original "just a guy" Hades and goth girl Persephone looked
But the new ones look nice
Me: Well, he's not a jerk; he's stupid.
Theseus: *Kidnaps Helen of Sparta while she's 12 and keeps her around in order to marry her when she grows up.*
Me: Okay, he's a stupid jerk.
A jerk that inspired drake apparently lol
I like to imagine that stupidity came about following his battle with the Minotaur due to brain damage as the Minotaur got several good hits in during the fight.
@@GhostBear3067it's because he's a son of Poseidon, he has seaweed for brains
Didn't both left her in Sparta due to her being only 12?
@@SirsasthNigam. Helen was from Sparta, Theseus kidnapped her and took her to another place
I mean, it’s Greek mythology.
It’s also Theseus. The only reason he’s not literally the worst (mortal) is because Agamemnon exists.
Mixed with histoography, you have to explain how the same guy 👦 funded so many cities and people!
Well, Perseus and Heracles were good heroes so not all of greek mythology
@@nromk Easy: Sony Pictures was probably fighting with Walt Disney Studios over who gets to make the most money off of movies about characters who first appeared in a [Theseus] Comic. Meanwhile, Paramount Pictures still holds the legal rights to make most of the money on movies starring or titled [Heracles] so [Heracles] never gets to star in a movie and only rarely appear in them. And when he does appear, it has to be under a different name like [Hercules].
@kingofdragons7 Sorry to tell you, but Heracles wasn't a good person compared to Perseus
7:07
Bro the way that hades and Persephone stared at each other like, “they really think they’re slick?”
Favorite part about that was the Beavis and Butthead-esque laughs out of Theseus and Pirithous
Ah, yes, Theseus the Assless. In some stories, when ya boi was stuck to snake chair, he was GLUED to it. And when Heracles came to yoink him free, his butt stayed behind.
gyatt nerf 💔
Considering his history with women, he clearly couldn't be trusted with it.
And on that day, Theseus lost his buns at the chair 😔
Soo that means he's an asshole
Thus the reason the Athenians thinks why they have thin thighs, being the descendants of Thesus
“Hi! I was a woman before, but now I'm one of the strongest man on earth!”
“Gee whiz! I wonder what sort of interesting plots ancient greek authors will give you!”
“I die immediately.”
When I’m in a being killed off contest and my opponent is literally any Greek hero ever (except Perseus):
Apparently he was killed for his hubris
Damn, Pseudo-Apollodorus contributing to the trans version of the bury your gays trope
Thats myths for ya, whoever gets to tell the next tale continue as they want. Its like the original dc and marvel without any alternative universes nor editors trying to reign in. I can imagine someone really not liking her-his story (pre-christian transphobe? lol) because he appears to be brought just to be killed, and in a kind of mocking way 'oh youre impervious? Then you will be buried. By fir trees. By dumb horse men'
That or 2 different authors were fighting for popularity. 'No you wont make a new and impervious snowflake!' - the biggest Theseus fan probably.
Anyway the other one responded by having the great Theseus be stupidly pushed from a cliff. And thats probable the cause of one the most violent tavern fights of the classic era
Technically not dead, he was not dead. He was immortal he was just buried by getting wacked by trees.

“The only one who gets to kidnap my wife is me!” - Hades, husband of the year
Did you get in to Greek Mythology just recently? Because Hades is actually pretty tame compared to his little bros., Poseidon and Zeus.
Compared to other characters from Greek myths, that's honestly not that much of a sarcastic statement.
@@moviemaestro800 well, Socrates in Plato Cratylus, said that he is best thing ever!
@@videogollumer well to be fair both Posiden and zues spend half of their time raping and kidnapping beautiful Greek mortals or goddess also when they are not doing that they interfere with mortals lives which Hades has not done that. (except for the kidnapping part he did that with Persephone)
That's not even sarcasm really, he doesn't have many competitors. It's basically him, Dionysus, Eros, Persius, Erebus (Nyx's husband, who doesn't do much,) and Hypnos (who spends most of his time sleeping)
Edit: I might have forgotten a couple, but the list is small
It’s so funny to me how all the other mythological figures have gotten redesigns, but Hercules is basically the same

"What part of aro/ace you did not understand?!"

8:10 You could have said "And I thought MY future in-laws hated me!".
For anyone wondering, the Centaurs are indeed Pirithous cousins.
Pirithous mother is Dia, and his reputed father is Ixion. But his actual father is Zeus, who had him in the form of a horse (?) With Dia. Ixion for his part claimed he slept with Hera, so Zeus sent a cloud nymph (a Nephele) with the shape of Hera to see if Ixion would indeed lay with her. And he did, so Zeus became piss off and killed Ixion.
The Nephele cloud in question for some reason gave birth to the centaur race as result.
Ah, the technicalities of your stepmother also being your aunt.
What the fuc?
@@videogollumermaybe look up the family ladder of the ptolomes . . .
Ixion and Nephele had a normal human child named Centaurus and one way or another had sex with the mares of Diomedes that lead to a race of half horse half man creatures which Centaurus the father of these creatures called centaurs after himself
6:58 Hades and Persephone got a killer redesign

Thank you for adding the story of Caeneus! It’s one of my favourite tragic Greek myths
can u explain it to me pls? i know poseidon raped him and turned him to a man, but i dont know the reason to it. did he want to be a man?
I love the bronze age inspiration for the character designs in this video, especially the little detail of Aphrodite's makeup based on that one statue
Lycomedes: Everything the light touches will be your kingdom.
Lycomedes, 5 seconds later: Long live the King!
3:40 Amazing attention to detail, having the left side of Antiope's left breast cut off!
It was said that the amazons cut off their left breast because it wasnt comfortable to use a bow with them
Correction: According to google, it was actually the right breast that the Amazons cut off or bound from a young age, the left one was often kept intact for future babies to feed from.
Pay a little more attention, ALL the amazons are drawn like that XD, it’s super cool
Were they all left handed? Wouldn't it make more sense to cut the right teat?

I love how your god designs and general designs of the characters have all become way more historically accurate. Its kinda funny because watching all the videos in order you can kinda see a timeline for how much you're learning the myths based on the designs.

About sail - it was said somewhere that white sail was torn apart in the storm, so he was forced to use what he had.
3:30 man another version I know very diffrent . In that Amazons also attack antiope because staying with theseus willingly, and Antiope sacrifice herself to save theseus
Yay, Jake noticed the timeline contradiction too! It used drive me nuts when I was a kid just getting into Greek mythology. The only way I could rationalize around it was that Medea was married to Aegeus _before_ the Argonauts, she then returned to her father, did the whole Jason thing, and then left straight back to her father after her little tiff with Jason. Which of course stretches the myths a bit. I eventually learned, as Jake says, to just ignore the timeline issues.
It's a narrative from various writers(or unknown sources) over many centuries. Trying to make a coherent timeline is lost cause
Theseus was not original part of the agronauts
IM IN LOVE WITH ALL THE NEW DESIGNS, THEYRE ALL SO AMAZING!!
6:10 content alert: the next minute or so about Caenis is NOT Greek mythology, this comes from Ovids Metamorphoses, a roman poet who allegedly wrote this in much much later after the story of Theseus was established. Also, its validity has been hotly debated since there are no surviving manuscripts from the time it was supposedly written. This was a much later, possibly contemporary addition to the story of Theseus.
Ah, got it
The death of Caeneus is depicted in Greek artwork going back to the Archaic Period, including one where his name is labeled: commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kleitias_-_ABV_77_1_-_compendium_of_Greek_mythology_-_Firenze_MAN_4209_-_56.jpg
The earliest literary reference I'm aware of is Apollonius' Argonautica:
"From rich Gyrton came Coronus, son of Caeneus, brave, but not braver than his father. For bards relate that Caeneus though still living perished at the hands of the Centaurs, when apart from other chiefs he routed them; and they, rallying against him, could neither bend nor slay him; but unconquered and unflinching he passed beneath the earth, overwhelmed by the downrush of massy pines."
Apollonius doesn't mention the source of Caeneus' invulnerability or him originally being a woman, so that backstory _may_ have been a later invention of Ovid. But didn't use Ovid as a source for this video. I primarily used Pseudo-Apollodorus (and Plutarch, though he doesn't mention Caeneus).
@@JakeDoubleyoo right, I don't dispute that he/she was an original character in Greek mythology, but it does seem the whole swapping of the junky parts very well could have been a much later addition by Ovid. I just wanted folks to be aware of that part. But I mean it's possible, the Greeks were known to be very progressive with gender in their mythology.
@@A_Stereotypical_Heretic its not like they were progressive with gender its just that for example in the oldest know version of the story of caenus from Acusilaus it is more like a situation of "being a woman is so terrible because pregnancy (or rape in other version) that being a man is so much better" the fact that when men are tranform into woman the text portray it as something shameful
@@chl8760 i dunno man, a mythology with a god/dess the likes of Hermaphroditus, id say they were fairly progressive with gender.

Y'know, in Italian there's a saying derived from the story of Ariadne and Theseus that goes "piantare in Nasso", translated "planting in Naxos" which essentially means leaving someone behind.
Another fun fact is that most people say it wrong and think it's said "piantare in asso", because the two sound similar.

I would like to throw this out There that within ancient Greece their concept of heroism is completely different than ours. In fact, I would say somebody akin to The Punisher is more closer to what the Greeks imagined in a hero. Because back then, a hero wasn't necessarily a truly wholesome, good person- that didn't occur until Superman in the 1930s - a hero in Ancient Greece was just a person that did great things and Is remembered for all time, not necessarily a good person.
In fact, there are some scholarly circles now that are believing that the stories of all of Zeus's infidelities and shapeshifting are actually grossly exaggerated and that the mainstream Zeus that everyone else worshipped was probably far more nobler than what we would imagine.
his boat is also apperently paradoxical
