  • We're back at it with a long player, mudlarking friends! I hope you enjoy this one, with all the spills and thrills of the foreshore. There's a bit of everything today, bones, buttons, seals, Roman, medieval, Victorian and everything in between!

Happy Holidays my dear! It's so fun tagging along with you on these river jaunts. I am happy to say I can now (thanks to you!) actually identify some of the pottery bits from my cozy studio here in California! Stay well, and thank you for sharing your adventures.

Hey Mary! That's great, I love it when people store the info and use it themselves. We're all always learning! x

Hello from the San Francisco Bay Area!
I’m always amazed at the variety of things you find. What do you suppose steel reefs are for? Musical instruments? Corsetry? Basket making?

Hello! Thanks very much! It's so important to give context to the fragments we find. Hope it helps you identify your own finds.

The variety and age of those beautiful pottery shards is wonderful, made all the more intriguing by the excellent knowledge you have of those finds. What we find fascinating is that after all the centuries past Father Thames is still throwing up these treasures. Thanks for taking us along.

5:17 that bone - could it have been a needle bone, used to sharpen needles? It looked like it had ridges on the end

Ah, you mean a pinners' bone? I don't think so. I do have one of those in my collection though, and they are one of my favourite finds!

We work around the tides...the aim is to get a good couple of hours (or more) either side of the low tide. We check the daily tide tables to see when they happen. So, all different times! Even night time!
