    I bought White Nights as my first “professional” set and then thought I was upgrading to WN. I saw several reviews who said not to use them in palettes. After feeling like I was splurging on the WN paints, I was disappointed. I actually liked working with the White Nights better. After watching a Mind of Watercolor RUclips, I splurged on M Graham and really like those! Even though they’re honey-based, they stay solid enough for me to use in my Altoid converted travel tin. (And Ok, the funniest thing about all my finicky discretion is that I’m a very mediocre, self-taught hobbiest!)
    Thank you for the time on these! Holy Moly that was an industrious undertaking! (And I refuse to choose because they’re all gorgeous).

    I recently bought my first Qor so I found this old video of yours. "only 3 professional line paints" Oh my how far you've come!!! I feel like this is such a great exercise; I definitely want to try it. I've been comparing all the American paint companies -- I bought a ton of DS to start, but am now learning about MG, DaVinci and Qor. I have done something similar where I used the same brushes & paints with 3 different papers, doing the same painting, and I learned so much!!

      Yes, it's such a great thing to do! I think I will choose a slightly less intricate painting subject next time, though, lol. Yeah, I went down the paint-buying rabbit-hole several times since that video (and received LOTS of them as gifts, too!). It's just too much fun trying them all - I love it! You'll have to let me know what you end up with. :-)

    This just popped into my feed this morning, what a neat comparison. That WN tube was really old! You can restore them with patience, a drop of glycerin and water, and a drop of gum arabic. I was ho hum about WN for a long time, but have come to appreciate them a lot. I always activate with a few drops of water from a pipette, saves a lot of trouble. My first pro paints were Mission Gold 24 pan set, I then bought the entire pure pigment line from an ebay seller in Korea for about 4$ a tube. I love them. I’ve just gotten two sets of Qor, I learned a lot just by watching you about how to apply that paint. I think it will save me some frustration. I liked all of your paintings!

    Love this video! Super amount of work, and I couldn't do it, but it was SO worthwhile watching it. I love the comparison of not just swatching but the actual painting process. :) Thank you for doing it! I feel like my Winsor and Newton Cotman pans are SUPER hard to rewet, but I haven't had too many problems with my professionals, and I have a few pans and some tubes poured into pans. That said, I do find them harder to rewet than my Sennelier, White Nights, and M Grahams bc those have honey in them. The WN aren't frustrating enough for me to avoid them altogether, but I definitely prefer the others. They rewet super easily and I have no problem getting color from them.
    My only possible thought on your tube of Alizarin Crimson at least is that it's an older tube? Though, that shouldn't really matter. I researched it myself, and the white tubes are manufactured in the UK, then a few years ago they switched their manufacturing over to France, and those are the silver metal tubes. Maybe the formulation on the new tubes is slightly better? The only white tube of theirs I have is a cobalt violet, and while that takes some love to rewet and get color, I 100% expect that from any cobalt violet.
    Hope that helps! :) Can't wait for more. :)

Thank you SO much for watching and giving me feedback; I really appreciate it!

    I’m honestly torn between the Mijello’s and the Qor. Both are extremely vivid but Mijello’s advantage seems to lie in more control and more subtlety to the art while Qor thrives on fluidity and harsh edges. I know it’s all preference wise but which would you recommend better as a tube paint out of curiosity? Great vid btw! :D

    • @MirandaWatsonArt
      @MirandaWatsonArt  3 года назад +1

      Thanks. Well, as you mentioned, you're going to have a bit more control with the Mijello, if that's what you're looking for. They are also very safe and easy and fun to use. The QoR paints will be very vibrant and fluid and fun, but more unpredictable for a while until you get used to them. Both are winners. Mijello will be more affordable. Hope that helps; thanks for watching!

    Winsor & Newton do have a line of paints made in China for the Chinese market that are made independently and are of inferior quality despite having the branding of Windsor & Newton Professional. That would be the first thing I would check for if I was in doubt about the quality of the paint.

    I usually leave eyes blank for ages too, lol! So interesting comparing paint brands side by side. I really want to do a mega paint brand comparison, trying to use the same colours. Becky, I would LOVE to see your bloopers, lol! Yes, please do a video like that, but make your painting something really simple, because this took days and hours to prepare, video, paint and edit. The 3-1/2 hours I mentioned was only when I put the brush to the paper. I'm so glad you like the QoR one; I was hoping someone would!

  • @scrappy3759

    Thanks for this video!
    I’m currently trying to figure out which paints to upgrade to from my cheapy student grade ones, although I have bought separate WN professional quality and DS. I never noticed a problem until I recently bought and tried to paint on hot pressed paper. At that point, I noticed the cheap paint didn’t look right. I did swatch tests with the WN (professional) and DS and they were not grainy, felt creamy, and faded out as you moved the brush.
    I am considering Qor and Mission Gold as they seem to be affordable for a set of tubes. In comparing your portraits, I didn’t really pay attention to the final painting as much as I tried to watch how the paint moved while you painted. The MG seemed to flow better, where the Qor seemed to stay more where you placed it. This might be why the wrinkles are harder lines in the final painting, assuming water usage was the same.
    At this point, I am leaning towards the MG due to the flow ability and if I recall correctly, in your green background the color seemed to fade out as you pushed the brush out. Thank you so much for doing this video, as I’m sure it was exhausting!

    I don't buy W&N b/c they say you can't dry it in pans. Also, the Cotman pans I had were like rocks. I love both Qor and Mission Gold.They're both bright and transparent but I have to be careful going from one to another. MG is gentler. It has a bit of a drying shift and needs a couple layers. But it feels very creamy to work with. Qor can be done alla prima and be just as bright. They're just different. I find the same thing as you do - both are easy to rewet and fun to use.

    Oh, W&N says that you shouldn't dry their tube paint in a palette. They want you to buy the pans separately! I have a couple and the more they dry, the rewet becomes harder. I think I will add glycerine when I pour my mini W&N palette.

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Год назад +1

    Rewatching this with more experience of my own is very interesting. I went back to see the flow of the paints (it's sooo cool to watch them sped up, and see how they move as they dry). Even though Mission Gold has a reputation for not flowing much, and Qor the opposite, it certainly does not seem like that here as you pointed out. I wonder if the pan set of Qor has less flow than the tubes. Did you get this little pan set first, or the tubes? I suppose that's why it was easiest to get the darkest values out of the Qor here, because they didn't move and dilute as they spread. I do like the Mission Gold one the best and the funny thing is, when you put the original next to the new three, it almost looked like a photo. I think the green in the dog was actually quite realistic, maybe the truth is in between the two versions somewhere!

    • @MirandaWatsonArt

      The QoR set I used here was one I made myself by squeezing the tube paint into full pans. I really enjoyed doing this test even though it took a really long time. QOR then mission gold Winsor Newton last

  • @artistjoh
    @artistjoh 2 года назад +4

    Mission Gold is student quality at best. Even their earth colors are mixtures that include organic dye colors. Besides the lightfastness implications, the organic pigments do not granulate well. They use organics because of cost but also because organic colors give an illusion of greater brightness, but at the cost of granulation effects. QoR unfortunately uses a synthetic binder that gives a simi9lar effect to artificial brighteners. This allows their marketing department to say they have greater pigment load while the truth is it is just a brightener effect. There is no way to know what the long term effect of this. the accelerated lightfastness tests can only test lightfastness and cannot reveal the effect of time on that synthetic binder. I wouldn't recommend Mission Gold for anyone. Winsor and Newton is better from the tube, and I trust their long term permanence. I also like working with pigments that have traditional varying characteristics.

    • @MirandaWatsonArt
      @MirandaWatsonArt  2 года назад

      Hmm... Interesting. I'll have to see how mine does over time.

    • @artistjoh
      @artistjoh 2 года назад +4

      @@MirandaWatsonArt Unfortunately it will take 50 to 100 years to know about the QoR binder with any certainty. OTOH the use of organics by Mission Gold is immediate and known. They are actually much better now than they used to be. In years past they were the poster child of fading colors. Now they have replaced their worst colors with more lightfast pigments, but they still use organics.
      Because earth colors like Yellow Ochre and Burnt Sienna already have excellent properties I do not understand why they would make it out of a mixture of oxide and much less lightfast organic ingredients. Their yellow ochre is a mix of synthetic oxide with PY150 which is a Nickel Azo dye based lake that was developed for the printing industry for inks. It has an excellent reputation as an ink ( unfortunately the acceptable standard for inks is much lower than for fine art) but in watercolor it is only acceptable in masstone, and the pigment arrives in the tube as a mixture. They make a claim of excellent lightfastness due to its masstone values but fail to mention that it is much less lightfast in the mixtures they sell it in. It is used presumably to make the yellow ochre look brighter, but yellow ochre is supposed to be a muted color - that is an advantage in many circumstances and leads to very harmonious color results when used with other muted earth tones.
      This is why I consider Mission Gold as acceptable only for temporary artwork, and place QoR as very interesting but use with caution because the long term effects are unknowable yet.
      Sometimes you can never win. I actually like Blockx watercolors but they are honey based and in my tropical/subtropical world insects attack honey based watercolors like crazy so they can't be used. I tend to use mostly the old reliables Schmincke Horadam and Winsor and Newton most with a few tubes from Art Spectrum, Daniel Smith and QoR for unique colors not found in other brands. Now that Winsor & Newton have switched to French manufacturing I am wary of continued high quality but so far things look okay. I love Schmincke because they focus a lot on granulation qualities of pigments and playing with granulation can be a lot of fun.
