Beating Red Rock All Stars with 305hp Silvia S13 (Gran Turismo 2)

  • Gran Turismo All Stars at Red Rock Valley, one of GT2's most infamous races. It's the best money-making race in the game, with each win awarding 50,000 credits and a TVR Speed 12 worth 500,000 credits. The opponents drive 600hp+ Le Mans prototypes with super soft tyres, but the free power limit makes it quite easy with a fast race car like the R30 Silhouette.
    With a vastly underpowered car, however? It's possible, but a blend of tuning knowledge, driving skill and luck is needed. The S13 Silvia Q's 2000c, with 305hp maxed out, has less than half the power of every other car here. This line-up in particular is very scary, with the GT40 Race Car and GT-One being particularly dominant if they get a big lead. The AI is very random, however, as you'll see throughout the race.
    The key to this race, both when tuning and driving, is downforce. Max front downforce is needed for the best front wheel grip and turning ability, but you can afford to go dangerously low with the rear downforce to help the car turn even more. It's what allows the Silvia to floor it through wide turns.
    However, slipstreaming will reduce downforce, which can cause loss of grip in an instant. You need to be constantly aware of whether you're currently slipstreaming, or else you might end up skidding or understeering while entering or exiting corners respectively. Slipstreaming is great for catching up on straights, but you need to break it off before it's too late, while also avoiding entering a draft mid-corner.
    Other significant tuning decisions include: min front height, max rear height for an acceleration boost, 2 damper bounds and rebounds for as little bouncing as possible on the banked turns, and 2.5 rear camber to prevent skidding due to low rear downforce. 6 LSD Initial and Deceleration are to prevent the car from divebombing entering corners. A slow 2nd gear is used to make closer gears from 3rd to 5th for better acceleration at high speeds.
    This run was extremely lucky, with more backboosts than the average GoldenEye 007 speedrun, but I'm very happy with how consistently well I drove all race. The ending was a bit anti-climatic, as the last lap was more of a victory lap than anything, but you get to see how effective this car's tuning was as I set my fastest lap of the race without any slipstreaming. Stick around until the end to witness something funny that happened during practice runs.
    Music used:
    Smoker's Lamnet - Ryo Sonoda
    Night Stream - Kohta Takahashi (from Ridge Racer PSP)
    Casino Drive - KEMMEI
    Afterglow - Satoshi Bando
    I played NTSC-U GT2 on DuckStation with 60 FPS, 16:9 and metric conversion codes. See Silent's GT2 blog for more info: cookieplmonster.github.io/mod...

    Must have been the thrill to get boosted by that Viper, eh?
    Been reliving my childhood one late evening at the time thanks to your ultimate guides, so I cannot thank you enough for your passion and dedication to that franchise that probably forged many of us.

      Absolutely yeah, I was caught completely off-guard. I had seen the glitch happen to other people, but that was my first time experiencing it. The camera transition in the replay was perfect as well. Glad the guides are helping out!

    The 5th gear is just a "break glass in case of GT-ONE bump" gear, and I love it.
    Great run, as usual 👍

      Hehe, yeah, a lot of FR's basically become 4-speeds with the gear trick because of how long 1st gear needs to be to reduce wheelspin, so 5th ends up being for 'special' situations like that. Thank you, glad you enjoyed!

    I love how I recently told someone that the Silvia Q isn't that useful and then you go on and do this with it, lol

      @TeaKanji  Год назад

      Hehe, to be fair, buying the Q's instead of the K's isn't a wise financial decision most of the time. The Q's 2000c is quite nice for 295hp events in GT2 though as it's slightly lighter than the K's with roughly the same acceleration. It also has its own colours for its racing modification livery too, unlike the Q's 1800c which just recycles the K's liveries. A shame there wasn't really any reason to buy the Q's from GT4 onwards.

      Thank you! It took a while to get 'the run', yeah. I had to spend quite some time fine-tuning the suspension and downforce settings, as the S13 is on the limit of grip around a lot of these turns. Basically needed everything to align, and I got massively lucky with the AI which of course helped a lot.

    Reminds me of that Top Gear episode where they filled their cars with water and drove them around the track.
    (Silvia drives past all the cars without cutting corners)

    A good thing the CPUs are not very skilled in this track, huh?
    And if you consider ideas for future episodes: the Trial Mountain endurance race, on NTSC-U 1.0 featuring the Vector M12 LM race car. I wonder if you can win this race with a low-powered, european car like the other CPUs?

    • @TeaKanji
      @TeaKanji  Год назад +1

      Hehe, yeah, they definitely didn't make it easy though. I lost a few good runs due to weird AI behaviour, like overtaking and immediately braking in front of me, or just ramming me into the wall around the wide turns. Took a lot of attempts to get a run where the AI co-operated, even ignoring the back-boosts. I almost considered making a compilation of all the ways the AI killed my runs.
      I had considered doing the Vector M12 LM endurance, but yeah, maybe a European car (even without racing modifications perhaps) could be interesting. Would need to practice for it since it's all about consistency. I'd also need to convert the 60FPS, 16:9 and draw distance codes since they're only for NTSC 1.1 and 1.2, but the GT2toXS converter should do the trick.

    i did this challenge with a wedssport celica and it was easier than i thought it would be the only problem was the toyota gt one that dropped in front and on the straights it was a bit of work.

      Nice one! Yeah, I lost quite a few runs to exactly that, the AI overtaking then immediately braking. These GT All Stars races are quite fun with a car that's barely able to win.

    What's up with your gear ratios?
    Edit
    Those AI cars turn poorly, that red one had so much downforce and not use it where it matters most.

    • @TeaKanji
      @TeaKanji  Год назад +1

      The slow 2nd gear? Red Rock Valley is a high-speed track so you never need to gear up from 1st to 2nd besides at the very start. I decided to sacrifice 2nd gear to get closer gears from 3rd to 5th.

      Sorry to bother you again, but can I once again ask for build advice?
      I’ve got a really solid build going for my RX-7 GTC LM, and I’ve been beating races and endurances with the ai hard mode codes, but the car struggles to keep up with the pack at times, and I want to know if there’s anyway to squeeze out even more performance for this car (and all the RX-7 specials)
      Just finished a nail biting custom endurance race on Grand valley, and a GT40 and GT1 were riding hard on my ass the whole time (like less then a second behind me.)
      Whoops, meant to reply to the main thread, sorry

    • @TeaKanji
      @TeaKanji  Год назад +1

      Sure, no worries. A lot of the specialized stuff I did for the S13 in this video also works well for the GTC LM. By lowering the rear downforce, the car can have a sharper turn radius, but you need to balance the rear camber and LSD so it doesn't lose traction entering and exiting corners.
      I'm not able to test it properly at the moment, but try starting with 0.70 rear downforce, 2.5 rear camber and 10 / 10 / 1 LSD along with 3.5 front springs and 85 / 130 ride height. Play around with the downforce and LSD until the car doesn't lose stability. This also makes the car way more sensitive, so you need to be careful around more technical tracks.

    • @TeaKanji
      @TeaKanji  Год назад

      Hehe, yeah, the S13's are some of the cheapest cars in the game. The Q's 2000c appears for under 4k quite often in the used lot. They all perform really well for the price though (though the K's are obviously much better than the Q's). Upgrades don't affect the sell price, so it leads to funky stuff like a racing modified car only being worth around 1k.
