Beating Laguna Seca All Stars with 335hp Lancer Evo V (Gran Turismo 2)

  • This is the first foray at Laguna Seca for this challenge series, and the fourth All Stars race to be beaten using cars with 345hp or less. There were a few cars I wanted to use for this race, but I settled for the Lancer Evo V after I realized it was too powerful for the Vector M12 LM Trial Mountain endurance.
Like in the other All Stars races, slipstream is both a blessing and a curse here, though it's a curse more often than not. It's extremely difficult to tell if you're still in a slipstream when approaching the corkscrew, and if you don't brake early, you'll go flying. The 90 degree left turn leading to the uphill is also really dangerous if you're slipstreaming, or at least if you're trying to stay on-track at all times. The AI goes off-course constantly here, and the gravel doesn't slow them down at all.
Note that I'm using the RS trim instead of the GSR; it's much lighter than the GSR, with the drawback of its stock gearbox being extremely short. Fully upgraded, the RS is the best choice, unless you want a non-RM Evo V in colours other than white. I found the V RS to be slightly better than the VI RS when tuned to power limits, with the caveat that the V has a sharp torque fall-off after 7000 RPM and you need to shift early with it.
Another weird gear setup, due to 4WD's needing a fast 1st gear for a smooth launch. Setting the final gear to 5.500, then setting auto setup to 13, gives both a good launch and enough top speed while ensuring the car stays within the 5500 - 7000 RPM power band. I also set the rear downforce dangerously low for better turning, at the cost of more unpredictability at the jump before the corkscrew. Rear dampers don't seem to affect this car much, so I left them at 2 both sides. Everything else was standard.
    Music used:
    The Trip - MAKOTO
Trail of Light - J99 (from Ridge Racer 6)
    Get on!!! - Yudai Satoh
I played NTSC-U GT2 on DuckStation with 60 FPS, 16:9 and metric conversion codes. See Silent's GT2 blog for more info: cookieplmonste...

The 4 banger FTW! Imagine if that happened IRL, when your LM race cars being demolished by a beefed up econo box 😅
So ... when will the Mighty FTO LM make its debut?!

Hehe, I guess 4WD might be a bit too much for these LMP's to deal with (ignoring the 155's 6th place finish of course...). I plan to use a regular FTO GPX or GP Ver. R for one of these races, as the FTO LM would be way too strong. Might show how to tune the LM at some point though.

@@TeaKanji I see. Tuning specific cars would be great! Especially in GT4. I am currently playing that one after applying the texture mod. So I'm in need of guidance for tuning some special cars like the Formula and the Trueno SS ver. 😅

Love your videos and guides. Have been quite a bit of fun while I've been replaying GT2.
I have a challenge for you. Well... Two challenges, but one is part of the other.
What's the weakest car with which you can beat the Pikes Peak Uphill climb rally event against the escudo?
The other challenge - what's the fewest number of cars with which you can beat all of the main events of GT2 (ie no manufacturer events) and which cars would they be?
Theoretically, it should be 4, one of each drivetrain that starts below the lowest hp limit of each different drivetrain cup, plus a few other restrictions (at least one turbo, at least one naturally aspirated, at least one which starts below 98hp for the kei cup and at least one which can have dirt tyres). It's not too bad for the most part, except for the Uphill climb against the escudo 😅 My two candidates for that race whilst still being able to enter the earlier races are a gtr r34 skyline or an evo vi rs, but haven't been able to win with either.
Curious what you could do with your skills and deep knowledge of the game. 💜

Thank you! Ah, I actually tried this a good while ago to see if I could upload something for the channel. I really doubt this is possible; granted, I'm not a skilled driver on GT2 dirt whatsoever, but the Escudo has such a massive advantage on both the straights and corners. The R34, even with over 780hp and max downforce, really struggles to put its power onto the road and feels way too loose in corners for my liking. I tried it on NTSC-J to see if it's any easier with its different dirt physics, but nope, it ended up being even more difficult. I'd love to be proven wrong though, of course.
Yeah it's say it's probably 5; one of each drivetrain (the Alto Works can win both Lightweight K and 4WD, and an NSX can be used for MR and NA, which frees up FF and FR for whatever you want), then the Escudo for Pikes Peak unless it really is possible to beat it with an R34 or Evo VI RS. Sorry I'm not offering much help here.

Oh, no need to apologise! The dirt racing in GT2 definitely doesn't have the same focus that the tarmac circuits do, so it's no surprise that they haven't been explored as much.
Overall, I was wondering if it was even possible as well. I think I remember reading somewhere that the escudo's dirt tyres have unique values to other cars making it have better grip, which might make it completely impossible anyway. I think it was actually in the Gran Turismo 2 plus mod thread. Perhaps the 4 car clear will forever remain one of my gaming white whales 😂😂
Anyway, thanks so much for the reply and keep doing what you do 💜

@@TeaKanji And thank you. Your performance in this race is a thing of beauty: instructional, inspiring and an easy-on-the eyes - and ears - guideline for entries in the "Under 370 HP GTAS Challenge" which is one of the coolest things ever. I mean, you're sponsoring an event. For GT 2, even. And for so many reasons, that's dope AF. I've recorded several races for possible submission but in all honesty your amazing driving here makes me feel hesitant to submit anything but a truly grand race: error-free and nearly faultless as well as possessing the attributes mentioned under Judging Criteria. In short, a compelling race worthy of serious consideration. Whether that's possible remains to be seen but the main point here is that giving GT 2 enthusiasts a chance to compete in an interesting challenge event is a beautiful thing. I hope there are many entertaining entries and that you'll be posting some of the more compelling videos. Again: thanks. Oh and did I mention that this event is DOPE AF?!?!?!? Some may think, "What a sycophant!", but the fact is TeaKanji is the man and this challenge event is awesome. Oh and imo the '98 PUMA Lancer EVO is the pick of that litter in GT 2.

@@michaelkottler Hehe, in a way I guess I'm 'commissioning' content, as well as inspiring others to challenge themselves. Glad you appreciate the challenge idea, I'm flattered. No need to be paranoid about the criteria, you've nothing to lose, completing the challenge is a feat to be celebrated.
By the way, not sure if you caught my message on Discord, but the video you submitted is set to private and I'm unable to watch it or add it to the submissions playlist. Could you check the video permissions when you get the chance?
