Beating 440hp Roadsters with 128hp Beat (Gran Turismo 2)

  • At long last, I'm finally beating with the Beat. This was another difficult one to pull off, as not only does the Beat have a massive power deficit against these 439 - 472hp roadsters with hard racing tyres, the AI is extremely random on this track. Many runs were lost to the AI going off-road at the start of lap 2 and punting me off-course as they re-enter the track. I had to drive two near-perfect laps to hold the lead, and thankfully it eventually all came together in this run.
The Beat is a car that a lot of people have trouble tuning and driving, as it's extremely twitchy and loses grip very easily. As well, its power is much lower than other K-cars when maxed out, making the Cappuccino and AZ-1 more appealing.
To remedy the Beat's handling issues, I had to tune it GT1-style with 5.5 front camber for extra braking and turning stability. The ride height trick also worked well to improve stability, while of course increasing acceleration. Max LSD Initial and Acceleration are used to prevent loss of grip around wide turns. Soft springs and dampers are so the car can glide over curbs. The Beat has a very sharp torque curve at high-RPM's, so I set a slow 2nd gear to get very close gears from 3rd to 5th for better acceleration.
    Music used:
    Smoker's Lamnet - Keiji Inai
Vanishing Horizon - Takayuki Aihara (from Ridge Racer PSP)
    Cecile - Seigen Tokuzawa
I played NTSC-U GT2 on DuckStation with 60 FPS, 16:9 and metric conversion codes. See Silent's GT2 blog for more info: cookieplmonste...

fun fact: in gran turismo 4, a stock honda s2000 lm race car with super soft tires can beat cars like the r92cp and minolta without tire wear enabled (at least on grand valley when i tried it)

The Tuscan is sus. I don't even care if the roof is removable.
I love the extra space needed by the Cobra for the last chicane in lap 1. Everyone takes it poorly, allowing you to catch up with higher exit speed. And then the AI struggle to stay on the road while climbing onto the 1st tunnel on lap 2.
Another example of how you win time in corners with a consistent speed...

The Tuscan being in this race confused me as well, I had to look it up. Yeah, the start of lap 2 is absolutely wild. You'd think it's a perfect chance to get away and build a lead, but what ends up happening 80% of the time is that you get rammed off as they re-enter. The Cobra in particular did that constantly to me.
I think the difference in times between lap 1 and 2 are very indicative of that last point, I rarely ever see a lap 2 that's 11 seconds faster than lap 1. Granted, I had to heavily sacrifice 1st and 2nd gear to get that 3rd to 5th acceleration, but clearly it paid off. Once it got going, the Beat never left high-RPM's for the rest of the race.

Which do you think is the best fully tuned sub 98hp car in the game? I thought the Beat would be the obvious choice, but I found out the Suzuki Alto Works Limited to be surprisingly very good at this range.

Off the top of my head, the Cappuccino was the best one I tested, but there might have been some other cars I missed and didn't try out. The Lancia Y, Fiat Cinquecento and Ford Ka were surprisingly good too.

@@TeaKanji The problem is that all these cars (except the Lancia Y) can't equip the Turbo 1 kit or they'll go over the 98hp limit, and all the other upgrades added still only put them at around the ~70hp mark. Despite this, the Cappuccino still performed surprisingly well for me, but the Alto Works is still the fastest I tried.

Ah, right, oops. I remember now, I mainly tested the cars at 147hp, and figured that the best cars in that category would be able to win the two 98hp Lightweight K races no problem. Would make sense that the Alto Works is best if it's just able to reach the power limit without going over.
