Evolution of High Speed Ring in Gran Turismo (1997 - 2022 / GT1 - GT7)

- Gran Turismo 7 has been released and it brings back several of the iconic original tracks from the previous GT games. One of these tracks is High Speed Ring. Here you can see a fast lap on High Speed Ring with the Toyota Castrol Supra in every major GT game that included the track, showing the evolution of the track and the car throughout the history of the franchise.

High Speed Ring has been included in every numbered Gran Turismo game with the exception of Gran Turismo 3.
In GT1 and GT2 the lap times were a lot faster, partly due to the Castrol Supra having a lot more HP in those games. GT3 featured several other tracks from GT1 but unfortunately it didn't feature High Speed Ring.
In GT4 the track got a redesign, which added the bridge after turn 2. In GT5 the bridge was rebuilt and got the design that it has today. In GT7 the track got a few minor updates like the green surfaces around turn 2 but the changes aren't nearly as big as they are for Trial Mountain and Deep Forest, which are the other two returning tracks from GT1.
In previous games the real world location of completely fictional tracks was not specified but in GT7 it is revealed that High Speed Ring is located on the Japanese island of Hokkaido.
GT1 and GT2 have very similar graphics but the handling is quite different in those two games, which you can maybe tell from the video. GT5 and GT6 are very similar in both graphics and physics though.
In each game I am using the featured version of the Castrol Supra, which is the '96 version in GT1, the championship-winning '97 version in GT5-GT7, the '99 version in GT2 and the '00 version in GT4.
I am using the softest race tires that are available in each game, no further upgrades or setup changes, no assists besides the standard ABS and automatic transmission.
GT 1-4 were played on emulator, GT 5-6 on PS3 and GT7 on PS5. The units are set to miles in each game, since the NTSC versions of GT1-GT3 don't have a km setting and I want to keep the units consistent throughout the video.
I have spent a lot of time on the track in each game to record the fastest and cleanest laps possible for this video, as you can probably tell from some of the lap counters. Hopefully people will appreciate the effort that I put into this video to make it as good as possible. :)
I have also shared the replay of my fastest lap in GT7, so you can watch it ingame from different camera views if you can find it in the showcase area.

Other RUclipsrs will probably make similar videos but I think that my version should be one of the best, so let's see if we can get it trending. It has been 18 months since one of my new videos reached more than 20k views and I finally want this period to end.

@@hijinx7044 Can you explain what makes you say that? I have hundreds of top 1% leaderboard times in many different racing games and I even had some success in esports tournaments. How good does someone have to be for you to think that they have good driving skills?

@@mewtwo.150 I think you feel it wrong. Some people knew about GT4 was better than GT5, actually that Visual & Graphics so Unbelievable amazing.
Fun fact : in GT4, there's a second pit entry placed after the last turn, you can enter it and the session is still going. Perfect if you want to photograph your car around the pit area.
I also try this trick, and yes. No pitstop haha 🤣 (second row : if you see of many cones there.)
I did the 30 minute High Speed Ring endurance mission on GT7 the other day and when it came time for a tire change, I ended up smashing right into the barrier where I expected the pit entrance to be outside of the tunnel, not realizing they moved it back onto the main straight. Old habits die hard I guess, haha.

I did my first race of Gran Turismo in High Speed Ring. Iconic and nostalgic track.
I remember getting the first gran turismo back in the 90s. Back then we thought the graphics couldn’t get any better. Crazy how much it’s changed

@@eins2001 Seattle on the other hand has one missing landmark: Alaskan Way Viaduct. The reason: demolished. The cause: structural hazard caused by the 2002 earthquake
Given that we now I have the Tokyo Expressway Tracks I somewhat doubt that the old SS Routes through the City will come back, but I feel like Tokyo R246 and Seattle could come back as additional City tracks, maybe even Rome in one way or another. Other than that I feel that El Capitan, Midfield and Apricot Hill would probably fit GT7 the best.
I would also love to see older versions of tracks added as Layout Variants, like i.e. "Trial Mountain (1997)", Spa with the old Bus Stop Chicane at the end or Old Hockenheim.
And I would really love to see Tahiti Maze make a comeback for Rally events, that track always felt very satisfying to master.

The bridge between turn 2 and 3
In GT1 and 2, it's non existent
In GT4, it's a basic suspension bridge
In GT5, this is the final design of the bridge
It's an asymmetrical suspension bridge
It looks the same in GT6
But in GT7, turn 2 has a sharper turn and added more spectator seating around the track.
This smoothly follows to the suspension bridge which the support system somehow got much taller
Seems the GT4 one are the major and final terrain revision over the prior versions with the addition of lakes and the bridges.
At least the track never loses its flavor, as in the layout, even when its environment and surroundings changed over the years.
The GT7 version of this track is like, "this is the way it's supposed to be, even by today's standards," proof that it can be done. Aside from the corner 2 being elongated and sharpened, this track layout never changes at all.
BTW, High Speed Ring also appeared in GT5 Prologue and GTPSP.
The new version of High Speed Ring looks great! I can see elements of the original from GT1 with the way PD added all of those pine trees and cliffs by the tunnel.

Well, the biggest outliers are GT1 and GT2. In those games the Castrol Supra has around 680 HP. In the other games it has around 470 HP. But the track plays a role as well. On Trial Mountain and Deep Forest the gap is only around 10 seconds between the first 6 games.
Yea i noticed that the topspeed was higher so thats the reason, yes. But theres a general decline in later games as well, though just a few seconds

I'll always like the theme of the original version - with it's big concrete walls and the forested bit near the tunnel. I like the design from GT4 onwards too, and how it was lengthened quite a bit. I also noticed that Turn 2 has been sharpened up a bit in GT7, probably to promote a bit of slower speed overtaking opportunities.
It serms that the same vehicle in the newer generations have slower Laptime, maybe it is caused by a more real vehicle-road-model.
With the new sharpened T2 in GT7, you can carry much more speed if you run the high line. The corner is progressively banked just like T6. Great for setting up a pass into T3. Also, unless you are driving a really slow car, run as close to the outer wall as you can into T6 to carry as much speed as you can down the front stretch.

So awesome. GT1 was my only GT. Are there other tracks that remained in the series throughout like maybe Grand Valley Speedway? Trail mountain? Would be great to see a video like this for those.
Trial Mountain and Deep Forest are the other tracks from GT1 that are in GT7. And I will make such a video about those too. I already announced that. :)
Grand Valley Speedway was in the first 6 games but it's not in GT7 so far. They will add more tracks to GT7 with future updates though, so maybe in the future Grand Valley will be there as well.

2:57 Simply masterful cornering and driving. I've been playing GT4 for years and have never been able to get below a minute and 5 seconds on the Ring with that particular Supra (without driving dirty that is). You sir have some major skills. Haters in the comments take note, this is how you play a racing game.

6 is essentially a patch for 5
6 was a downgrade from 5 since it made cars a lot easier to drive and handle. also it made a lot of cars unrealistic faster than they were in real life.

i agree with you. I also miss Grand Valley Speedway, Midfield Raceway and the Seattle Street Course.
SSR5, 7, and 11 should be a separate portion of the wider Tokyo Expressway tbh, to reflect the real life counterpart of the Tokyo freeways being super diverse. And yep, they should be brought back but with Tokyo Expressway aesthetic.

Think about it - race tracks often don't have much trees within their property location. This is why I think Deep Forest and Trial Mountain in GT7 look so deforested - maybe, just maybe there's less trees so that spectators and marshals (and medical staff) can access the track easier in the events of emergencies.

GT4 has this track on its Formula GT championship. The race lasted 77 laps.

@@itachi1165 UPDATE: there are endurance races. Head for Missions and you will see Human Comedy - these are 1 hour races. There is also a Spa 60 minutes in recent update, and there are 30 minute endurance events as well as a 24 minute Le Mans mission race. There are no races longer than an hour yet.

I spent so much time playing GT2, pretty much learned how to play a racing game. When GT3 came out, it was an eye popping moment except it was heavily lacking contents. Then GT4, it consumed a fair portion of my late teens.

I have already recorded the other tracks in GT1-GT6, so I will use the same format for them. But there will definitely be some GT videos with other cars too. Just not for the track history videos. Here I like to use time trial.

Like I said I will definitely make videos with other cars as well though. It just isn't my intention for this particular type of video.

No, I am only showing the main games 1-7 and Sport. I have never played the PSP game and I am not planning to try it in the near future. Maybe some day but probably not soon.
GT PSP courses are identical to GT4, save for some signs in the World Circuits being replaced. In a way, there's no point.
