Beating 600hp Tuners with 231hp Skyline (Gran Turismo 2)

  • We're back at Tuned Turbo Car Cup, where the AI drive vastly over-tuned cars that they can barely keep on the road, even with soft racing tyres. I decided to give the Mine's GT-R R34 a run for its money, by using the humble Skyline R32 GTS-t Type M. A classic starter car for many GT2 players, this race will hopefully prove that it's viable for most late-game events too.
    Despite the AI's cars having between 561-628hp, there's only one real threat in this race: the Mine's Lancer Evo V. It makes much fewer mistakes than the other cars here, perhaps owing to its true 4WD handling and how ridiculously good the Lancer V and VI are in this game. Getting a lead early is important, and you need to make as few mistakes as possible.
    Loosening up the Skyline with soft front springs for better turning causes it to feel very twitchy. I remedied this by applying 3.6 front camber, which was enough for the car to grip well but not understeer. Soft dampers set to 2 / 2 greatly help with the bumpy wide turns. You need to be careful with the rear camber, as too much will hurt the car's corner exit traction. 1.4 gave a good balance of mid-corner grip and corner exit traction. Everything else was pretty standard.
    Music used:
    let me see your mind - Tyme.
    Pulse Phaze - Hiroshi Okubo (from Ridge Racer PSP)
    WINDS - NORIHITO SUMITOMO
    I played NTSC-U GT2 on DuckStation with 60 FPS, 16:9 and metric conversion codes. See Silent's GT2 blog for more info: cookieplmonster.github.io/mod...

    That drift between the two cars at the end of lap 1 was so smooth 🔥

      Hehe, thanks! I was excited when it happened, but then I was nervous because I knew I needed to drive two more clean laps or it wouldn't have mattered. Thankfully I was able to hold the lead for the rest of the race without making any big mistakes.

    I must say, the Gun Gray Metallic is my fave color for the R32. It is one of my earlier cars in GT2 and GT1. If only I knew that with decent tuning it can be this good, I would've used it more often back then. At the very least, it will be, before I get that sweet FTO LM.

      It's a cool colour yeah, something about it makes it feel like the car is driving faster, hehe. The FR Skyline's are popular starter cars, but they're pretty underrated when it comes to mid-game events onwards, they're quite fun to drive.

    Awesome!
    Are you open to do these sorts of challenges in GT 3/4 as well? I would love to watch a full walkthrough of a GT4 career - you're driving is so mesmerizing and you're tuning setups look topnotch. You should upload you're tuning setups on an excel file or something lol

      Thank you! I've thought about doing something along these lines in GT3/GT4, yeah. I'd like to try beating the Corvette C5R in American Championship with something low-powered, would need to figure it out. A shame that most of the difficult events are really long, and would be boring to watch compared to GT2's shorter races.
      In GT4 it feels like the main challenge is to get 200 A-spec points. While I respect the people who've gotten over 100,000 A-spec points in a playthrough, I find that aiming for 200 points forces you to make your car weak to the point of being unfun to drive, with comfort tyres and whatnot. I'd love to do tunes around sports tyres, but I'd only be fighting for 120-150 A-spec points and it'd feel like a cop-out. A full playthrough though, that could be interesting if I had the time. One day I'll properly document all of the tunes I've done for the guides and challenge videos for sure.

    I assume this is being played on pc. I've tried playing gran turismo 4 on aethersx2 android and im getting a smooth gameplay like this video assuming its 60fps. But when i tried playing GT2 on duckstation android, i can't seem to get a smooth gameplay like this video. Its confusing how a 4.5GB game (GT4) runs so smooth on android but cant perform a 60fps Gran turismo 2 ... 😢

    I once had a skyline like this in the game, a very cheap one damn it was so fun!

      It's a classic in GT2 and GT4 for sure; handles well, has decent power and weight for the price, and more suited to low-power events than the GT-R's.
      Side note: I was massively disappointed in it in GT1. I was going to include it in the list of best starter cars for the guide since it's possible to buy it for under 10k credits on day 60, but its turbo upgrades add barely any power. The stage 3 turbo boosts its power from 208hp to only 255hp. The GTS25 Type S, despite having less power to start off with, is cheaper and tunes a lot better. GT1's balancing is very strange sometimes.

    And here i thought winning the turbo races on SSR5 with 295HP civic is already too good. That machine is nimble

    • @TeaKanji
      @TeaKanji  Год назад +1

      Hehe, to be fair, the SSR5 race is a bit more challenging as the AI can somewhat drive properly there. The AI is not well-equipped to drive low-downforce 600hp cars on Deep Forest whatsoever, with the slight exception of the Mine's Lancer.

    This shows, a great suspension setup is more important on a twisty circuit, than power. And also, great overtake by the opponent: ruclips.net/video/KMprfYtj5zo/видео.html

    It feels like Little Mac in the Punch-Out! games: seems like it's over, but by some kind of miracle you manage to do it

    • @TeaKanji
      @TeaKanji  Год назад +2

      Hehe, yeah, everyone roots for the underdog. It's kind of difficult recording these runs sometimes because, not only do I have to drive well, I have to hope that the AI is co-operative also. There's been times where I've reset runs because the AI was exceptionally slow and I managed to overtake everyone really early on lap 1. I try to aim for a couple hype moments per run so it's entertaining to watch; I'm glad it paid off.
