  • The U.S. Navy Band Sea Chanters perform "Eternal Father, Strong to Save," the Navy hymn, at the commemoration of the 59th anniversary of the Korean War armistice at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. on July 27, 2012.
    Eternal Father, Strong to save,
    Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
    Who bid'st the mighty Ocean deep
    Its own appointed limits keep;
    O hear us when we cry to thee,
    for those in peril on the sea.

      scraps,
      There two ways to stop the madness.
      1. Join a choir and do a really beautiful cover of "Imagine".
      2. Scare the living bejeesus out of the bad guys and if that doesn't work kill them dead as fast as you can and don't stop until they say no mas.
      I'm a bit of a history buff. Read lots of history over the last six decades. I gotta say that door number 2 is the only thing that ever works.
      That's a beautiful piece of music up there. Everything about it is beautiful. Beautiful uniforms, beautiful voices, beautiful people.
      And each and every one of those people is ready, willing and able to stop right in the middle of the song, strap on the battle rattle and, if necessary, take a bullet to protect you and yours.
      That's just the way they roll.

Later, in the sheltered coves we laugh, but when the waves crash down upon us we have no laughs. Eternal Father, strong to save, we cry to Thee.

My stepmother would not allow me to play the Navy Hymn at his funeral. I stayed up until midnight the night before his funeral in 1973 to record it off the TV. It is. The U.S. Coast Guard uses the same melody, but starts, " Eternal Father Lord of hosts, watch over the men who guard our Coasts. Protect them from the Raging seas and give them light and life and peace." That is about all I can remember. In my time ( '65-'69 ) there weren't any females in the Field. I only saw one and that was a Commander, when I was in School in Groton, Ct. and she was a Commander. At that time the ones that were in the Coast Guard were probably Yeoman or Storekeeper ( Clerical rates ) or perhaps Dental Technician. They are all over now and I suspect they may have revised it from Watch over the Men who guard our coasts to something gender neutral such as watch over those who guard our coasts.

    When this Hymn was penned by the English clergyman William Whiting about 1860, little did he imagine then just how truly Universal his Hymn would become and beloved by Merchant and Military seamen all over the World. Originating from a South of England town near the sea, he would have been well aware of the dangers the sea was to the fishermen and seamen of coastal towns and villages nearby. Very soon afterwards, it became the Official Hymn of the Royal Navy and was subsequently adopted by every Commonwealth Navy to conclude onboard Church Services or Committals to the Sea. I am sure Whiting would have been more than well satisfied by this moving performance of his Hymn by the US Navy Band.
    I am led to believe the French Navy is the latest to adopt the Hymn as their Official Naval Hymn.

    The local yacht club holds a November 11th ceremony each year which both commemorates Remembrance Day and the 1941 visit of HMS Prince of Wales which after 11/11/1941 went more or less directly to Malaya where it was one of the first British casualties in the war against Japan. Our community does have a well attended ceremony at the local cenotaph but I've always attended this one as it's a naval ceremony (and I'm from a naval family) rather than the other one which is mostly army-oriented*.
    Just like in 1941 (where at most 200 of the sailors who attended the service were still alive 6 weeks later) this hymn is always part of the service and is particularly poignant for our family.

Family loved but behind they traversed unknown worlds and settled among danger. New families were born of these tough survivors whose genes pump through your veins today.
    Never forget who you are or where you came from. God instilled in the heart of man a burning need for freedom. America is awash in this necessity today and forever more. God bless America forever.
    Many thanks to all men and women serving this great country.
    Ordinary Citizen,
    Matthew Beals.

    Through the great age of technology we live in today, I was able to hear these lovely voices. Thank God for all the souls who have served and are serving in the US Navy and all other armed services of The United States Of America. May God bless you always. Thank you for your service.

    They played this at my dad's memorial service, because he always loved it,even though he was in the army. It's amazing though how his stepson went in the Navy,and so did his one and only grandson. This is a beautiful hymn,and I treasure being able to sing it and hear it all these years!!!!

    Eternal Father, strong to save,
    Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
    Who bid'st the mighty ocean deep
    Its own appointed limits keep;
    O hear us when we cry to Thee,
    For those in peril on the sea.
    O Christ, Whose voice the waters heard
    And hushed their raging at Thy word,
    Who walkedst on the foaming deep,
    And calm amidst its rage didst sleep;
    O hear us when we cry to Thee,
    For those in peril on the sea.
    Most Holy Spirit, Who didst brood
    Upon the chaos dark and rude,
    And bid its angry tumult cease,
    And give, for wild confusion, peace;
    O hear us when we cry to Thee,
    For those in peril on the sea!
    O Trinity of love and power,
    Our brethren shield in danger's hour;
    From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
    Protect them wheresoe'er they go;
    Thus evermore shall rise to Thee
    Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.
    Amen.

    This was a heartwarming rendition from all of our women and men that serve in the US Navy. My prayer is that ... "There will never be the knock on the door to give the ultimate bad news." SIDEBAR QUESTION: Is that Admiral Wm. McRaven to the left of the seated "Congressional Meal of Honor" recipients on stage?
