    To all those who wrote comments criticizing the arrangement as being "over the top for this hymn", or words to that effect, you have obviously never served aboard a Navy warship while on deck in a rolling sea with waves exploding spray 40 feet over the prow! There is a section in the middle of this piece, and the sweeping and powerful voices near the end of the piece, which instantly evokes the feeling and memory of witnessing that and I can see that memory again in my minds eye! As a U.S. Navy Sailor, thank you for making an arrangement of my favorite Hymn which stirs that kind of emotion in me and brings those memories back. Well done, Mr. Forrest!

      Anyone critical of this music is a fraud. For those of us who faced the waves and wind there is no better expression that our fellow sailors matter and the bond of a common experience is beyond words.

    My late father in law, his brother, and my late uncle proudly served in the USN. My father in law and his brother served during WWII on battleships and my late uncle was a Commander-Chaplain at the end of his 40 years of service, stationed at various posts around the world during his service. The original hymn was penned in 1860 by William Whiting, an Anglican churchman from Winchester, United Kingdom. Whiting grew up near the shores of England, and at the age of thirty-five had felt his life saved by God when a fierce storm nearly destroyed the ship he was traveling on, instilling a faith in God's control over the rage and calm of the sea. As headmaster of the Winchester College Choristers' School some years later, he was approached by a student about to travel to the United States, who expressed to Whiting a tremendous fear of the ocean voyage. Whiting shared his experiences of the ocean and wrote the hymn to "anchor his faith". Whiting is commonly believed to have been inspired by Psalm 107, which describes the power and danger of the seas in great detail:

      Because I live in the Great Lakes area of the United States of America, it is the Merchant Seamen who have my admiration. Winds and waves on our "Inland Seas" have over time taken many ships and human lives. Each March, a Blessing of the Fleet is held at Mariners Church, in Detroit. It was when I attended this service for the first time that the powerful words brought me to tears. Although more familiar with the original tune (Melita) I find this arrangement to convey the same emotional depth.

    I am the founder and executive director of the HMCS ALBERNI Museum and Memorial in Courtenay, BC Canada. On 21 August of this year (2024) we will be commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the sinking of HMCS ALBERNI and the loss of 59 of her crew with a ceremony and dedication of a permanent memorial wall listing the name of every crewman who served on the Alberni between 1941 and 1944. I've been searching RUclips for the perfect presentation of this hymn to play just before the 59 names are read aloud and this video has me in tears. I wish I could bottle everyone on the stage up in a bottle and bring them to Canada for our ceremony but alas, we don't yet have that kind of technology. This is 11 years late, but thank you all for creating such a stirring and moving version of this song.

    1 Eternal Father, strong to save,
    Whose arm does bind the restless wave,
    Who bids the mighty ocean deep
    Its own appointed limits keep;
    O hear us when we cry to Thee
    For those in peril on the sea.
    2 O Savior, whose almighty word
    The winds and waves submissive heard,
    Who walked upon the foaming deep,
    And calm amid the rage did sleep;
    O hear us when we cry to Thee
    For those in peril on the sea.
    3 O Holy Spirit, who did brood
    Upon the waters dark and rude,
    And bid their angry tumult cease,
    And give for wild confusion peace;
    O hear us when we cry to Thee
    For those in peril on the sea.
    4 O Trinity of love and pow'r,
    Your children shield in danger's hour;
    From rock and tempest, fire, and foe,
    Protect them where-so-e'er they go;
    Thus, evermore shall rise to Thee
    Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

      O Savior who descended deep,
      But rose again, death could not keep.
      As your ascent to the Fathers side,
      So bring our brethren back to the light.
      And ever more shall rise to Thee,
      Glad hymns of praise from beneath the sea.
      ........ My verse for submariners, USS Tinosa SSN606, USS Luce DLG7, '71-'75 .......

    Lovely arrangement of a classic hymn, Dan! It can't replace a good arrangement for a men's chorus, but it's a lovely addition to the many arrangements of this moving and meaningful hymn. I was 13 years old when President Kennedy was assassinated, and the hymn is a poignant reminder of the fragility of life in this crazy, mixed-up world. I can't wait to sing the hymn in heaven. This song continues to gain traction with almost all the services for its moving melody and meangful words for those who leave our shores via land, sea and air.
    There must been a lot of choir effort to coordinate with the orchestra on those long notes, but the end effect was most pleasing and professional. J.Tingle

    what a magnificent assemblage only to have such poor audio; what a shame.

    This is such a beautiful written song and is ruined by the quality of the recording. If anyone knows if a professional recording exists, please point us in the right direction. This is just plain sad to have a recording that sounds like a iPhone 1 or 2 was used. So sad!

    I'm wondering if you'd consider letting me use this music in a video I'm making...of Archangel Michael. Would you be willing to consider? This is the best version I've ever heard. Or if it's available for sale, I'll buy it...if there's an mp3 available for it. Thanks!
    Also I'm hoping to publish my video tomorrow (Sunday) :)

      Hi Cory- Sorry for the delay in replying- I was out of town this weekend. If you want to use the audio of this in a commercially released video, you would just need to contact Hinshaw Music for a sync license. They're very reasonable and good to work with, on these things. www.hinshawmusic.com

      Dan Forrest Thanks Dan for getting back to me as soon as possible. It's entirely non-profit, non-commercial. Simply a meditation to allow Archangel Michael to come through and reach people, through the music. Thank you again. :)

      Hi Cory. Just wondering how you know about the connection of this hymn with Archangel Michael. Thanks.

      Vincent Ardizzone I had an encounter with Archangel Michael one time in my life. I was on my way to Banff, Lake Louise Canada for a leisure stay. I heard there was terrible rain, miserable weather for the prior 30 days, and I was hoping to go canoeing on Lake Louise. I started saying a kind of prayer out loud, demanding that the weather be peaceful and nice. When I arrived a day later the weather was beautiful, and the guy renting the canoes said he couldn't believe it or understand it.
      Then when I was out canoeing I had an experience where I felt the Presence of Archangel Michael. In His Presence I could here this music playing.
      Some people in this comment thread for the video say it's almost too grand to them, not enough like a hymn, but I can tell you this music resonates with what I was hearing or whatever you call it...
      I do some research online and there's a whole bunch of information that this song is His Keynote, actually belongs to Him. So I want to do a video with it, using Him as the image, or artwork...
      I did another on Archangel Michael already, but this one is actually His song!

      Very interesting story Cory. I enjoyed reading it. Fascinating too. I wonder if you are aware of the significance of Banff to Archangel Michael. By the way, I too learned long ago that the music of that hymn is his keynote. Let's keep communicating. Thank you.

    Would it be possible to hear a recording of just the score without the chorus? Both sound wondrous, but the curious me would love to hear an orhestral only rendition.

    +Dan Forrest
    "Commissioned in remembrance of John F. Kennedy, at whose memorial service this hymn was played."???Sorry but you are wrong! I know the hymn was played at Kennedy's funeral, but it was not "commissioned in remembrance" of him. Where did you get that idea from? If you had bothered to do the slightest research, you'd have found that it is a British hymn. The lyrics were written in 1860 (103 years before Kennedy's funeral) by William Whiting, the music composed in 1861 by John Dykes.It was originally used by the Royal Navy. The US Navy later adopted the hymn, cheekily calling the (US) "Navy Hymn". Please try to get your facts right...

      This arrangement was commissioned not the original hymn!

    • @vaq33ens
      @vaq33ens 6 лет назад +1

      I think, perhaps, this arrangement was "commissioned" for this performance. Also, the United States Navy has been using this hymn since 1879; almost as long ago as it was written. At least fourteen additional verses have been written to honor various Navy personnel from Marines to astronauts. I very much love this hymn and have left instructions for it to be performed at my funeral.
      By the way, the best version on RUclips is by the Ohio State Marching Band; believe it or not.

      Lord Daver, who ever you are, you have misunderstood. The Navy Hymn, "Almighty Father" was played and sung at JFK's funeral in St. Patrick's Cathedral, NYC. Mr. Dan Forrest's work is one which amplifies and greatly enlarges the scope of the hymn into a celestial anthem of
      glorious and uplifting praise.
