      I've heard this hymn sung at many funerals. Mostly for fallen comrades. It also brings me to tears. I am grateful that the OSU Band has such a stirring performance of this very dear to my heart hymn.

      I got to attend a skull session and a football game in Columbus earlier this year, but this time as a fan 20 years after attending as a member of the Marching Thunder. It was just as awesome this year as it was 20 years ago. I now watch the skull session live stream here on RUclips before every home game. Go Bucks! Go Herd! Thanks to all the military veterans for their service to our country.

    I am an OSU grad and spent two years in Navy ROTC as battalion bugler etc. but went Coast Guard upon graduation. I played in the Buckeye Scarlet band but not the marching band. The Coast Guard Hymn is the same with slightly different lyrics: Eternal Father Lord of Hosts...Watch or the men who Guard our coasts...Protect them from the raging seas and give them light and life and peace...grant them from thy great throne above the shield (also a reference to the Coast Guard shield emblem)and shelter of thy love...Amen. At skull session I always sing those lyrics. The band brings me to tears every time I hear this.

    • @johnbaker8625
      @johnbaker8625 Год назад

      The original hymn was British. It was decidedly Christian, with the following three verses referring to the Son, the Holy Spirit, and the Trinity. Typically only the first verse is played in a military context in this country, which makes it more universal. In addition to the Coast Guard verse, there are verses for every branch of the military, ) (the Navy band always includes the verse about the Marines) for specific military units, for astronauts, and for families that remain at home. I am sure God approves, as He loves them all.

    Every Sunday at chapel everyone at our college sang this song by heart. Last November, I went back to campus to visit with my classmates for a weekend. It had been fifty years since we first met as plebes. On Sunday we went back to the chapel to hear the roll call of all those classmates who have passed before us. At the conclusion of the service we sang the Navy Hymn - once again by heart. I cannot help but cry every time I hear it - a reminder of bonds formed long ago. My senior year roommate married a wonderful girl who graduated from OSU. Thank you for a wonderful performance. And, yes, I cried.

    • @1979cl1
      @1979cl1 3 года назад

      @@rickklein7792 Yes that's correct, if you watch the video "JFK's Funeral" here in youtube, you'll see a huge navy presentation through out his funeral, but not only the navy but also the army, marines, coast guard and the air force also honored him. You can hear the tune being played when his casket is carried in but actually it's the audio they put into that scene because it was really played when the soldiers folded the flag just before wrapping up the funeral.

    Please forgive me ignorance but is there a connection between OSU and the USN? My understanding is that it's not uncommon for the band to play Eternal Father Strong to Save at their skull sessions. It's a lovely song and they do a wonderful job playing it, but why Eternal Father and why at OSU? The song is generally called the Naval Hymn so I'm wondering if there is a connection between OSU and the USN?

    • @Tenjac

      +G Hill The band plays this at the start of every skull session. The band started as an ROTC band, which is the source of it's military nature.

      This started at the OSU v Navy game some years back when the Iraq war was going strong. The band started playing and every Navy person in the hall jumped to attention. It was so moving, especially to me, whose son was in Iraq, well it was an instant hit so they play it in honor of ALL Military

      I was there the first time they played this song. It was wartime and we played the Navy Academy that day. If you could see the gratitued of the Navy folks there and this Vietnam era Navy Vet, then you woild understand this song was so well received, it has become a staple of the band.

      I’m retired Navy and this almost brought tears to my eyes. So beautifully done! Love the bits of the OSU - Naval Hymn history here! This might answer why I see a crowd of Sailors (and other branches) at the foot of the ramp all the time. I kept thinking, “Just how many Sailors and Soldiers does it take to render Colors?!” 🤓⚓️⚓️

    • @francisbusa1074

      I don't care what the music is. If it renders honor and glory to God, as well as remembering our service personnel, it matters not to me who plays it.
      This piece is a wonderful supplication to Almighty God.
