      Grandpa served aboard the AH-5 Solace right across from the Arizona. It was sung at his funeral as well. Used to go to the Captain Kid officer's club with him down in San Diego on base.

    Oh Savior who descended deep,
    But rose again death could not keep.
    As your ascent to the Fathers side,
    So bring our brethren back to the light.
    And ever more shall rise to Thee,
    Glad hymns of praise from beneath the sea.
    ....My verse for submariners

    So wonderful to hear this on the Arizona Memorial. My grandfather and namesake watched her go down from his ship at the point of Ford Island, the AH-5 Solace on which he was a chaplain. He only spoke of it once to us and never again. He went on to serve in the Pacific for most of the war, my father joining the Navy at it's end as a torpedo bomber gunner who never saw action.
    The Navy Hymn has always been near to my heart.
    "O Trinity of love and pow'r,
    Our brethren shield in danger's hour;
    From rock and tempest, fire, and foe,
    Protect them where-so-e'er they go;
    Thus, evermore shall rise to Thee
    Glad hymns of praise from land and sea."
    Amen and amen. Rest in His arms Grandpa and Dad. I'll see you soon...

    My Father was a 30 year "mustang officer" in the Navy, and was the senior enlisted man in the admirals office at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. When Adm. Nimitz took command, he gave my dad his commission and made him Deputy Flag Secretary. In all things, I could not have had a better father.

    Eternal Father, Strong to Save is also called the Navy Hymn... it is sung at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.
    This was a favorite hymn of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and was sung at his funeral in Hyde Park, New York, in April 1945.
    It was also played by the Navy Band in 1963 as President John F. Kennedy's body was carried up the steps of the U.S. Capitol to lie in state.
    Roosevelt had served as Secretary of the Navy and Kennedy was commander of a PT boat (a torpedo-armed fast attack craft used by the United States Navy in World War II)
    during World War II.
    The original words are:
    Verse 1: Eternal Father, strong to save,
    Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
    Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep
    Its own appointed limits keep;
    Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
    For those in peril on the sea!
    Verse 2: O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard
    And hushed their raging at Thy word,
    Who walked'st on the foaming deep,
    And calm amidst its rage didst sleep;
    Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
    For those in peril on the sea!
    Verse 3: Most Holy Spirit! Who didst brood
    Upon the chaos dark and rude,
    And bid its angry tumult cease,
    And give, for wild confusion, peace;
    Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
    For those in peril on the sea!

    My Uncle, a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, was laid to rest a number of years ago. Included in the ceremony was the Navy Hymn followed by the flag presentation to my Aunt, his widow, with the words: "On behalf of the President of the United States of America and a greatful nation . . . " If hearing this hymn and those words don't get to you, you're not of this world.

    The US military has some really great musicians. Very under appreciated. I was at a NY Knicks game during Fleet Week a few years years ago when I heard what was IMO the best straight sung rendition of the Star Spangled Banner by a woman from the Navy Band chorus. It was moving and perfect...no idiotic embellishments.
    Incidentally, it’s worth noting that the US military’s budget for the arts was actually larger than the whole National Endowment for the Arts.
