7 Phases of the $10,000 72v SUR RON Rabbit Hole

  • Here's my financial descent down the Sur Ron upgrade rabbit hole. Is spending the cash worth it, or is the Sur Ron just a 😏 "money pit bike"?
    The electric bike upgrades in this video shows my personal journey in owning a Sur Ron and the phases I went through and what upgrades I decided were appropriate at what point in ownership. These phases aren't really in any particular order, but I think most people who buy a Sur Ron e-bike consider many of the upgrades I did to mine.

    • @eiskrie2313
      @eiskrie2313 4 месяца назад +1

      @@BallBiter56 Have you ever ridden a Sur ron? Probably not. I have all kinds of vehicles, motorcycle 1000cc, 500cc, V8 650HP car etc. even an airplane. But the Sur ron is something completely different. It's super expensive, but the riding is completely different and it redefines the feeling of freedom. Unlike normal motorcycles, you can ride this thing to places that are completely different, but at the same time you can go to all the places that a normal motorcycle is limited to.
      People are so much more chill and relaxed when youre on a Sur Ron then on normal Gas driven bikes.
      This Bike just has unbelievable tolerance for bystanders.
      For example, I ride my Sur Ron mainly on hiking trails or cinematic bike paths, which I would never do or get to otherwise (People would complain alot). The acceleration on an 80V Sur ron is incredible, sure I've ridden bikes that can do it faster, but they're not as light as a Sur ron at 50kg which just rides so differently.
      All in all, when I got my first motorbike, I thought, wow, this is freedom!
      But the Sur Ron somehow gave me more of a sense of freedom than any other bike, especially when stealth camping.
      The only problem is the range anxiety that comes with it. A gas bike never gives me the feeling of reaching a certain limit like the Sur Ron does.
      My normal trip with the Surron is to put it in the back of my Defender and ride it into the mountains and hike all day until I can't anymore (the battery lasts longer than I do). it's fun and very different than anything before.

Why own a electric bike when it costs as much a motorcycle? … Why? Because i also already own everything you’re comparing it to 1, but also, you can’t take a boat on a non motorized lake. You can’t ride the mountains in the morning and be home by lunch in a Jeep. You can’t ride a super sport street bike on a sidewalk or on a MTB downhill trail from a ski slope. thats why Im just selling my motorcycle I bought just two months ago and get the surron instead. I made the motorcycle license because I love riding mountainbikes but hate to paddle (were I live its very flat). I thought combining my love for car driving and my love for mountainbikes and getting a motorcycle would be awesome, but I just dont get comfortable with my motorcycle. Driving fast without much protection with traffic just feels too dangerous and is not for me. For me its way more fun to drive offroad, ride around a sharp corner while feeling the wheel losing grip and than accelerate out of the corner with spinning wheels. You dont get that feeling on a motorcycle.
      I think the surron is the better compromise for me and I cant wait to get my hands on one of these and explore all the woods in my city

      This almost never makes any economic sense. If you already have a vehicle, you need to ride the bike far enough that the costs of the bike and electricity is less than how much gas you would have spent. Say gas is $4.00 / gallon and you spent $4000 on your ebike. How far does your car go on 1000 gallons of gas? If it gets 30 mph, you need to ride the bike at least 30,000 miles before you recoup the costs of the bike, and you still haven't factored in the electricity you've used to charge it. Hybrid cars have the exact same problem, the hybrid markup makes it uneconomical.

    I mean comparing costs between e-bikes and gas powered anything is weird. E-bikes have literally a one time charge + upgrades (or maintenance), and the power comes almost for free from the wall. The power of gas powered vehicles costs 5$ a gallon, and no matter what when you are moving on that gas powered vehicle you are spending money actively.

    the theme in your story is exactly how things went for me, except i used an old full suspension mountain bike i have had for 19 years or so. the current build is a rear hub qs205 4t v3 and the controller is some chinese controller that i had up to 9kw several times at 72v, i think i even had it up to 100v times 100amps. the fastest it ever had it was 60mph, but this was back in my 4.2kw days and i dont care about top speed any more. i also power it with a custom battery that i built out of six 6s 22.2v 22ah lipo packs, this is about 3kwh of battery btw.
    i built a custom harness so i can wire it up how ever i like and use all the packs or not, i use low voltage alarms to keep me from destroying them and spent like $900 on chargers so i can charge them all up fast as fudge. oh an my bike still pedals and mostly still looks like a bike.
    i could never understand spending like 5k on a bike and never modifying it it and only going like 20mph and need to take it in for every little repair such as a flat tire lol.
    now i am building a second bike so fools can go ride with me.

    I TRULY wish there wasn’t such a crack down here in Orange County with SurRons. All the SurRonster kids really took over and abused every location to the point where it’s likely you’ll get your SurRon taken from you or in the least heavily tickets based on sight alone. It truly sucks. Big cities like Los Angeles and SF still have more time. Have fun man! I hope the laws change in our favor soon or that cops chill out a bit. And as much as I still want one for staying off the grid entirely, I just feel like no matter how much I turn it into a legal class 3 ebike with pedals, keep it at 30mph, etc… I’ll be the guy who actually gets busted instead of the kids. Maybe I’m being too nervous, but it’s just so much money spent to constantly be worried about (especially if it’s actually my main transportation). ✌️

      @DrewskiTheLegend Год назад

      @@JuicedJoyrides that’s the problem with e-bikes though. They appeal to that guy. That’s why your average non e-cyclist doesn’t like them- they tend to end up under dumbasses who don’t have the knowledge,skill or etiquette they you learn on a pedal bike and they go 2-5x as fast. That’s a recipe for disaster.

    motorcycles may be cheaper for the same amount of power but I doubt you're going to be dipping out of traffic to cut through a field or to jump onto the sidewalk with them like you can with the talaria/surron. You may end up spending more money on the bike in the long run but its still a decent trade off once you realize how restricted you are with a motorcycle and the ease of maintenance with an e bike versus a motorcycle. Not only that but its a hobby that is AVAILABLE TO ANYONE, I would much rather go mobbing with an ebike owner than some idiot on a crotch rocket or chopper any day of the week. Plus motorcycle upgrades are significantly more expensive than upgrading an ebike, its a no brainer. Really the only downside is that you cant go on crazy long trips with an ebike like you can a motorcycle but is a small price to pay when you dont want to be as loud and obnoxious.

    Don't bother yourself by motorcycle prices or speed. There are cbr1000f for 1000 bucks that do 280km/h. But it's heavy and riding a motorcycle on street just isn't jumping staircases or riding a surron on trails. And if you are looking for an light weight. Trail riding motorcycle. There aren't many that light and fast. They use gas and make noise. A Suzuki sm450 for example weight 2.5 times the surron. The weight makes it less fun and harder to handle.
