Since there is a new Zack Snyder Zombie movie coming out, Tony and Newt got together and re-watched the Dawn of the Dead from 2004. In this Podcast / Movie Review they will talk about all the things that make this terrifying, like the chaotic opening scene, the top notch make up effects, and the films overwhelming sense of dread.
When her husband is attacked by a zombified neighbor, Ana (Sarah Polley) manages to escape, only to realize her entire Milwaukee neighborhood has been overrun by the walking dead. After being questioned by cautious policeman Kenneth (Ving Rhames), Ana joins him and a small group that gravitates to the local shopping mall as a bastion of safety. Once they convince suspicious security guards that they are not contaminated, the group bands together to fight the undead hordes.

When Newt had the baseball bat at the beginning, I thought he was finally fed up with Tony.
I know I am. I’d strangle Tony by now
It's not that King of the Hill got better with age it's more that you like it more as you get older cause you relate more with Hank
I loved king of the hill
So true. I literally just told that to a colleague today.
That’s literally what “getting better with age” refers to basically.
pro tip: watch series at Flixzone. Been using it for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
@Maxton Rene yup, I have been using flixzone} for months myself =)
The remake of The Crazies is pretty awesome!
Heh...
When that movie came out, I was helping out at a local horror convention here in germany. Romero, Savini and most of the cast were there. Still one of the best cons I ever attented.
oh hey, a fellow german person! ;-)
My buddies and I watched the remake of Dawn the Dead in the theatre the same year we graduated from high school. This is still one my favorite zombie movies of all time, can't wait to see Army of the dead on Netflix.
When it came out I had just gotten my drivers permit, not license, and drove across town to the theater to see the movie. I was more scared of getting pulled over than the movie, honestly.
So what did you think of army of the dead. It reminded me that I can get as drunk as I want and make more sense and construct better plans then Hollywood.
"I'm still terrified beyond the means for rational thought".
_me everytime I'm eating taco bell_
That goes for any fast food really
Really appreciate the Egon quote you dropped in the AMC commercial Tony.
felt too good not to use when i was writing the script
@@newtonwallen3210 Oh! Well, credit where credit is due, thanks Newt!
I'd like a remake of Dante's Peak with Crystal as the mayor of the town and Newt as the Volcano Seismologist.
I'd like to remake the original Predator with Kieran as the Predator and Newt as Arnold....
Every remake should star Crystal. It makes anything worth watching. ;)
Id like a remake of Hack the Movies with Tony as Newt and Newt as Pirate Tony
@@dwayneelizondomountaindewh6073 I’m io
Or newt as the volcano
I'd like to see a remake of Rental Reviews with Steven Segal playing Justin Silverman
Seagal is too fat nowadays to play Justin at this point
@@regularsizedrudy5340 🤣💀💀
@@regularsizedrudy5340 lol
@@regularsizedrudy5340 Man, that's quite the burn.
I think Justin already made something like that
First time I remember running Zombies was Return of the Living Dead.
I remember them from Nightmare City from the early 80's by exploitation hack director Umberto Lenzi... Awful 😅
Not that it matters. But Dawn Of The Dead came out before Shaun Of The Dead over here in the UK.
Dawn came out on March 26th and two weeks later on April 9th Shaun was released because Universal was worried about releasing two zombie movies close together, but also wanted to capitalise on the remake/zombie craze.
You got a genuine paid promotion! Happy for you, dude!
And all it took was summoning the zombie apocalypse to get it.
Can't wait to see what Jason Goldberg thinks about this movie.
Who ?
@@theitfactorjameswheezer2852 refer to the fear and loathing episode for answers
Damn Jason Goldberg that bastard. Lol
Jason Goldberg once send me a picture of a loaded gun with the words " soon.." written underneath. Guy is a lunatic
He made me eat my own hair just to see me cry.
Please do Tango and Cash! I've been requesting this for literally months, also you guys are awesome.
Just found this channel through Adam does movies, just subscribed! Love the long form content and Tony is hilarious
I love Dark City too!
Luda, Mekhi Phifer's wife was played by Inna Korobkina who was definitely not in I, Robot. She did have a small role in Transformers: Dark Of The Moon. So you had the robots thing right.
Tony these types are so entertaining that it makes me want to do my own series of videos like these about movies I grew up with.
Didn’t get to watch the live premiere but I’m here now! Love the content guys!
Mila kicking the zombie dog while a bad ass Nine Inch Nails remix plays was probably the best part of that movie
there was no Nine Inch Nails on the soundtrack.........The score for Resident Evil was done by Marilyn Manson and Marco Beltrami
Michael Kelley (Doug Stamper-House of Cards), had an arc on The Shield that really got my attention back in the day.
I remember I got this version from "Sam Goody" back in the day. After my huge disappointment on the resident evil film this was a breath of fresh air, and watching this film in my mind I thought I was watching the resident evil outbreak movie. If they would have used that name for this movie they would have nailed it since Racoon City is sort of like Wisconsin. Keep up the good work guys.
Please do Dark City. Glad you mentioned it. It’s so good.
great review as always guys!! And thanks for officially putting these on Spotify! Love listening to it in my car.... ps I know your RUclips search Alien 3 story BUT.... love the tagline of the alien movie... In space no one can hear you scream
This year makes 20 years since this movie came out, it’s still awesome. My favorite Zack Snyder film.
Nice Ghostbusters reference. "I'm terrified beyond the capacity for rational thought".
Shut up
Thanks for the content Tony from Hack the Movies and Newt
thanks for watching
I never knew that fact about the color being messed up on the original Dawn of the Dead but it totally makes sense now
Hey tony and newt!! Cant wait! gangsta
Can’t wait for this one
Really lol'ed at the Dead Alive zombie baby comment being done to perfection. Brightened my day.
36:15
Agreed. I'm so burnt out on "SuperJesus" & "WonderRand". Which is why I'm excited to see Army of the Dead. Even though it's more of action flick & has more in common with Dead Rising & Left 4 Dead.
The DVD was awesome! Especially the feature of a new broadcaster following the events of the movie in real time with videos from some of the side characters.
YUP
Quality stuff fellas. Tony if you deepen Newts laugh in post it would sound strangely familiar to Shao Khans laugh in the Mortal Kombat 2-3 era
My step dad used to have an 80s Max Headroom Coca Cola skateboard and it was "off limits" I still ripped that thing every once in a while lol
I saw this when it came out in the theatre and was impressed and surprised by how effective it was. I was an avid horror fan (collected Fango since around 1985), fan original and loved zombies. The opening sequence remain one most effective ever.
Nothing makes Newt laugh harder than a joke told by Newt.
Or stolen by Newt...
Lol
@@Chaoitcme like you've never told someone else's joke or quoted a movie, get off your pony
@@ItsBobEvans There is a huge difference from referencing someone else's jokes and out right stealing them and passing off someone else's creation as your own.
That is called plagiarism and in the legal word can get you sued.
But man, I wish I did have a little pony I could ride around on. That would be amazing. I could get a cowboy hat...
For freaking real, dude just loves to hear himself talk
Yeah I love what you guys are doing here, completely original and nothing like rental reviews. No all kidding aside I find these videos highly entertaining thanks for taking the time out and making content for us little people. I know that it's tough to do especially since you're famous now.
Best show you guys keep me up and entertain and fill my empty night newt and tony best movies critics
Dawn Of The Dead really reflects the immediate post-9/11 world through a classic horror element.
Bro it's been 20 years. move on
@@FNA4E Bro I was like 6 when 9/11 happened. It did not effect me on a personal level. I'm just stating how it reflects that time period in cinema.
@@LPTV84 Like, I get it, but I just do not see where you come to that specific conclusion.
I can see it on a superficial level
The movie starts semi normal and innocent enough, then the next day, people woke up to something nationally catastrophic happening and the fabric of america literally changed.
9/11 happened pretty similarly in that regard.
Remember that The Return Of The Living Dead (1985) was also one of the early "running zombie" movies.
Fun fact: Romero's son, George Cameron Romero (also a director, writer and artist) lives just down the road from me. He frequents a local shop where I work. Eventually I found out who he was and every time he came in we would discuss his dad's films. Eventually he hired me to compose the score for an independent horror film that he's producing and editing. It's amazing to have grown up on Romero's films and through purely random circumstances end up as part of the Romero universe myself even in some small way. The world is truly strange.
Kevin Zegers is the kid from Air Bud and is Canadian. Mostly filmed in Canada and lots of Canadians in the movie.
The zombie museum is back at monroeville mall. I live 20 mins away and finally went to the museum in November. Got in free cause I'm a veteran, but it was awesome. Anyway, I love this movie. This and the remake of "Night" are fantastic and among my favorite zombie movies
Sarah Polley was also the little girl Sally in the Adventures of Baron Munchausen!
yep. but i really wanna talk more about friday the 13th the series
@@newtonwallen3210 absolutely. When else would you get the chance to talk about it?
She was also in "Go" with Katie Holmes and "Splice" with Adrien Brody.
@@Madbandit77 That's the movie I remember her from "GO."
I like how Tony's sister answers that call like she was expecting it
If Newt is about the heels, I recommend a chunkier heel which gives a more solid support
Couples Retreat was the movie that Newt was talking about at the end.
This channel is awesome

@@newtonwallen3210 Newt I just subbed to your channel although I don't know why you haven't posted anything in 2 years. Legit excited for this!!!!! Let’s dive in. Also just signed up for AMC + for ultimate shudder and joe Bob access!!!
the silhouette of the person getting wrecked by zombies in the back of a bus was haunting
1:01:02 - Russell Mulcahy directed several music videos in the late 70s/early 80s("I'm Still Standing", "Hungry Like The Wolf") before directing Highlander
This movie was filmed in my neighborhood. In fact the private high school I attended was in the mall of this movie. It's going to be demolished soon. The opening shot of the hospital is actually a community centre and public library, right next to it
I remember when they aired the first 12 or whatever mins on USA. I was a fan of Monday night raw and it came on before or after and looked amazing
I'm so god damn used to hearing the song 'Zombie Apocalypse' by 'Mortician' to start up right after the "...the dead will walk the earth."
That scene and the just the most brutal death metal ever recorded.
Very cool!
Surely one of the best zombie movies.
Now, that you mentioned it, I’m gonna be on pins and needles until u review Dark City. Please make it soon. You know Dark City is a top Ten all timer, you know it
This episode get's five stars
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 nice hat ToneY
Hard to believe this came out almost 20 years ago
The Andy stuff on the dvd was cool. I remember liking it and being very creeped out with the thought of it.
The Italian joke KILLED ME lolol
got em
Great remake
1:10 Yes that sequel had a Vegan Zombie named Bub in it , Rolls my eyes.
21:31 When Newt looks at the camera without saying anything. Even though you know he wanted to. Zombie attacking the Capital building? Who would've thought?
How about all the moments of newt Laughing hard after everything he says?
That was the most sarcastic promo I have ever seen lol
The old lady...that was Jane Eastwood, a Canadian actor who I hadn't seen in years. She was in a lot of award-winning Canadian movies back in the day. Good to see her working in the early 2000s!
There was nothing at Monroeville mall when I went there in 2004.
This was a very special movie for me. I was 15 when it came out. I hated the original Dawn, but I always loved Night Of The Living Dead. The color of Dawn ruined it for me.
But it was my friend Ben's birthday when this was in theaters, and a bunch of us stayed at his house for his party. His mother was extremely religious, crazy, and strict. But we snuck out after midnight and had his older brother take us to the movie. I remember watching the intro and thinking it was one of the best horror movies I'd ever seen.
Also the beginning of the game The Last of Us, always reminds me of the beginning of this movie. That is also easily one of the best horror video games ever made, and despite the hate for Part 2 it is also legendary.
Tony review 'John dies at the end'
I saw this excellent remake of the George Romero original in the cinema when it came out - twice in one night!
And I snuck into the cinema to watch both sessions that night...
I did the same thing with 28 Days Later a couple years earlier.
Dead alives baby is the most horrifying thing i have ever seen
Showers, pools , oceans, bascily anywhere in water sucks😁 awesome review/movie good laughs....now you should do cornetto trilogy 😎
Fazon love I'd suing because of that poster
They changed the poster art just before the release of the movie
Oh man Prism! I loved that channel as a kid. It was like a second hbo channel. I didn’t know that was a local Philly station. I always thought it turned into Stars for some reason. Always remembered. Channel 17 prism. 20 hbo. 33 Nickelodeon. 35 MTV when it was good.
I believe I saw the remake before I saw the original. I think both work well on their own terms of Zombie horror and action.
Watched this while deployed to Iraq. It actually introduced me to George A. Romero.
I haven't seen this yet but I hope it has a lot of slow mo
I haven't seen this movie in a very long time! But been wanting to. Specially the director's cut.
Also, Alien 3 goddammit!
Sorry I'm late, I was trying to get my green cap fitted just right. The trick is to marinade it in the cushions of the couch for a few weeks and then grab it in a hurry and go "hmmm, this will work".
Regarding islands in Wisconsin on Lake Michigan, yes they exist, I have a family cottage in Washington Island which is very habitable.
You guys need to review swamp zombies 2.
Loved Tad bit in hack the dead
this video kicks ass, love the KOTH reference, I saw this movie cause the mall in dead rising was based off dawn off the dead. Im a die hard dead rising fan so had to watch dawn of the ded; I know, a shame I didn't see the movie before I played the game.
the Shia Lebuf classic Holes is what you should review from the grand canyon lol.
So, what Newt is saying is that, in the remake of “This is the End”, he’d be playing Danny McBride with his pet, Channing Tatum.
And then later on he was taking about wanting to wear high heels..I think he is trying to tell us something. Maybe his hair toupee is on too tight.
Feldman reviews pls
did newt have to dub the audio for that commercial?
We both did. There was too much echo
Tony where did you get your Italian sweatshirt? As an Italian I need it.
Oh yeah and don't forget newts. "Me too"
Absolutely loved this film as a kid they filmed it at a mall in my city of Toronto
I can see a future episode "Did The Matrix ripoff Dark City ?? - Talking About Tapes"
matrix did use the dark city sets
Newt confused Matt Pinfield with Former MTV/MTV2 VJ Iann Robinson, he has an uncredited cameo as a zombie. "When first entering the mall, the group is charged by an Asian man-turned-zombie. The large zombie behind the Asian man is played by Robinson."
Scrolling looking for someone old enough to bring it up. 😂
Can y’all please do Land Of The Dead, it’s my all time favorite zombie movie, love y’all
i have to rewatch that one. have not seen in years
@@newtonwallen3210 it’s good brodie
they mean they'd fill the grand canyon, it's not like anyone would live through that ... well maybe everyone on top will be fine, as far as the ones in the middle, it'll depend how hard it would be to climb over all those bodies
Always gotta love a CWC/sonichu reference
Review Bushwhacked from the PA grand canyon

Nah man these zombies are smart that is what makes them so scary. They stopped in the stairwell, little girl in beginning opens doors and the zombie picks up the propane tank.
