1999 had a lot of really good movies come out that year. The Green Mile, Varsity Blues, Fight Club, The Mummy and others. Edit: Also The Sixth Sense and The Matrix. It was a fun time to be a movie fan.
American Pie, House On Haunted Hill,The iron Giant Three Kings Deep Blue Sea,Mystery Men,Blair Witch. The Wood,The Best Man, Any Given Sunday,She’s All That,Go,Detroit Rock City,Office Space,Blue Streak,Bowfinger,So much fire all in 1 year
I remember seeing this on opening day. The lobby was decked out in Egyptian decorations. And everyone in the theater reacted to every moment on screen.
in my cinema they doubled this with the matrix. gotta say that was money well spent..probably the best double feature ever. 1999 was a great year for movies.
I'm soooo happy Newt brought up The Fountain, it's one of my top 3 fave movies. Thought I was the only one who really, really dug it. Also, The Rocketeer and The Mummy are definitely up there though. Both for different reasons.
Winston was played by Bernard Fox, who had a respectable movie career, but was known to my generation as Dr. Bombay on the tv series "Bewitched". My siblings and I applauded when he appeared here. The animated mummies and soldiers make me think, in a good way, of the stop motion skeleton tour-de-force scene from the mind and hand of Ray Harryhausen in "Jason and the Argonauts".
No, he played Col. Archibald Gracie in Titanic. He also played Frederick Fleet, the lookout who spotted the iceberg, in A Night To Remember: another Titanic movie.
This movie is so great! Does anyone remember when AMC did Monsterfest during Halloween? Monsterfest '98 played the trailer dozens and dozens of times a day, as well as had a sweepstakes to be at the premier. I was hooked.
When Tony mentioned how everyone keeps talking about evil curses, my mind immediately went to the sequel where that mercenary has the line “what is it with you and curses? this is cursed, that is cursed” Lol
I can remember watching The Mummy on VHS and I haven't seen it on that in a while so it's cool to see. I've seen it on DVD the last few years but plan on getting the 4K version.
I know the sequels to this movie are not great, but with legacy sequels being a big thing now, I can totally see this franchise being revived with an older Brendon Frasier and supporting cast. Its funny the hosts mention Mayan / Aztec for a potential idea for a sequel. Before the 2017 reboot, a fourth Mummy movie was supposed to be called "The Mummy: Rise of the Aztec" but was later cancelled due to the 3rd film's performance. If I remember correctly, because I only saw it once, the 3rd film teased the Jonathan character mentioned he was going to Peru, so it would have been an interesting and creative idea for a follow up. If Universal does try to go back to well with this franchise, they really need to have a good script, because audiences need more than fond memories of the 1999 remake, which is still pretty good after two decades later. I think trying to make it scaled back, scarier, while still having that adventure vibe could work out.
I watch this movie about 2 or 3 times a years. So damn good. Also holds up if you put it in black and white to make it look like the older Universal monster movies. Great choice! I can't wait for the full review.
My 6th grade teacher in 1999 showed us the open scene of this movie when we were learning about ancient Egypt, because it was apparently really accurate.
Love The Mummy. This was a remake from the 90s where universal and others were remaking classic monsters. No one else can play Rick O Connell other than Brendan Fraser. This was a great remake of the Boris Karloff. The Mummy came out May 7th 1999, and Phantom Menace came out the 19th of the same month. The Mummy Returns is silly popcorn fun. The 3rd was meh. I don't count the scorpion king films.
I sent mine from the UK but I only sent the cover, not the case or dvd, will you be able to send it back because I didn't know about putting stamps on the self addressed envelope, if you can't then please send me a link to make the payment
That is so cool, thank you, i hope you're all keeping well and safe from covid still, please tell everyone I said hello, I know that doesn't mean anything because of all the fans you guys have through the show and your movies but I am always glad to chat to you guys
One of the reasons that mistresses and concubines were so common in ancient times is that not only were most marriages political, but childbirth was VERY dangerous and most women were happy that their husband’s attentions went elsewhere to spare them from another pregnancy or they just weren’t in love with them.
In my opinion, the first mummy, the mummy returns and the first scorpion king are my favorite. I liked the 3rd mummy but it wasn't as good as the first 2 and it reminded me of Indiana Jones.
i am happy. newt again did something i was hoping for (reference to "true romance")... and tony is just fkn hilarious, when he's against everything :-D
08:07 funny irony that Imhotep means "one who comes in peace..." 😂 My name, Wilfred, (I didn't know until fairly late in life because I didn't realse that British names can have meanings like that, too, for some reason 😆) comes from Germanic/old English words for "will" and "peace," so it's interpreted as being intended to mean "he who seeks peace." I loved it when I found that out because I feel that it really suits me as a person. I like my peace, I'm a pretty chill guy, but also, when I set my mind to something, I'm a very determined person with the will to do whatever it takes to defend that peace if necessary.
I love this film and laughed out loud when tony called people Narks for being upset about mistresses. The prison officer was in gladiator he’s a comedian/actor from Iran and the UK
I've done my homework. Omid Djalili was in Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End. He was the indian pirate Askay, who speaks for the pirate lord Sri Sumbhajee. "Sri Sumbhajee votes for Sri Sumbhajee".
Loved this review, I was gunna do a retro review but life happens. One thing I remember from the trailer is " Its the adventure that will live forever!" It's TRUE because it's still an awesome take on the Boris Karloff film. Plus Rachel Weisz 🔥🔥🔥
I'd like to see the Hack the Movies crew unearth Imhotep from the basement of the store. After he kidnaps Crystal, it's up to Tony, Justin, Johanna, and Newt to save her and fight his CGI mummies and sand.
I used to mistake Laura San Giacomo from Just Shoot Me for Rachel Weisz. I used to think they looked the same and sounded the same. Just imagine that back in the day you didn't have access to the internet and google search to confirm these things.
If you have the DVD Brendan Fraser does a solo commentary track where he mostly makes jokes about how hard it is to do a commentary without someone else in the room to bounce off of
I literally had to test fire bear Spray all day at work....and the thought of coming home and watching the boys and Johanna, talking about a movie I love to death. I can't wait to hear your thoughts :) good or bad

We finally reviewed The Mummy Returns. Watch it here: ruclips.net/video/8XFNJySaU5Y/видео.html
Benny’s scene with all the religions
On his Chains when he saw the mummy,
That was funny!
Brendan Frazier was the perfect mix of heartthrob and action hero star in this movie. Definitely one of the most rewatchable movies all time for me.

That brief "when the Moors conquered Sicily" joke was super subtle, but I laughed my ass off. Great reference to Dennis Hopper in "True Romance".

FYI, the actor who played Winston was Bernard Fox. Fox was also in Titanic (he played the Sargent-at-Arms), the Rescuers, and the Andy Griffith Show.

That cliffhanger begs for athother sequel
When Tony mentioned how everyone keeps talking about evil curses, my mind immediately went to the sequel where that mercenary has the line “what is it with you and curses? this is cursed, that is cursed”

For some reason at random moments I say that line out loud when it's dark in my house and I hear noises I don't normally hear lol

The 4K version is gorgeous
Alien Encounter scared the hell out of me too. As a adult now. Kinda miss that ride. Great thrill ride.

The guy who played Benny was also in another great horror sci fi movie Deep Rising with Famke Janssen and Treat Williams lol

Tony you were right! 😄 The Mummy came out nearly 2 weeks before Star Wars Episode I
This is a wholehearted episode; your exchanges are on point.
Omid Djalili who plays the warden in the mummy was the greek customs officer in Mamma Mia Here We Go Again
Speaking of Brendan Frazier, you guys should do bedazzled... then we can talk about Elizabeth Hurley as the devil

It's weird to me how the great blockbusters from the 90's dont get nearly the credit they deserve. Especially when compared to ones from the 80's.
