The Worst NFL Trick Play

  • While the Colts almost take the title thanks to their fake punt (or whatever you call what they did) against the Patriots in 2015, this title goes to Jim Zorn and Washington in 2009. Against the New York Giants, down 24-0 with 2 seconds left in the first half, Washington lined up for a field goal, before attempting an absolute embarrassment of a play. Just...it’s just the worst.

    So, Ive actually sucessfully run this play in High School football. What was supposed to happen is the punter immediately throwing the ball to the motioning kicker while the punters blockers allow the defense through like a screen pass. THEN, instead of running the ball, the kicker would have a pocket to throw the ball himself. The problem with this play is that the punter got scared and fogot what he was doing...

    • @bemusedalligator
      @bemusedalligator 5 лет назад +236

      you know that makes a lot of sense. Because if you look those two "blockers" waited for the defense to run past and then headed straight for the end zone like they expected to receive a pass shortly.

    • @bryndayy
      @bryndayy 5 лет назад +188

    • @jarvindriftwood
      @jarvindriftwood 5 лет назад +55

      It's a fun playground play, but the true Annexation (fumblerooski) been illegal in the NFL for ages as it's considered intentional grounding. NCAA actually banned it shortly before the Little Giants movie. There are some variations that can be run that avoid the ball touching the ground, though.
      The Chargers and Panthers have successfully done a variation for TDs in recent years where the FB gets in front of the QB and the QB hands the ball between the FB's legs (similar to the snap in reverse motion). Then the QB and RB move to the other side to try to bait the defense on the wrong direction.

    For the Colts play, the center was actually the only one who knew what he was supposed to do. In the play book it said that of the QB was in shotgun, don't snap. If the QB was under center, then snap the ball. The coach told the QB to go under center to try to catch the defense offsides, but he didn't tell the center. So the center did exactly what the play book said to do in that situation and snapped the ball. This is all according to Pat Macafee

    • @VeKtorVacuum
      @VeKtorVacuum 5 лет назад +10

      Brendan McKeeby ball was definitely supposed to go to Gano. Failure of execution was blocking, super obvious screen to kicker. Looking at the stack of Washington blockers it's so obvious. Is this the part where millennials ruin basic football play analysis? Because only an idiot can't see where that ball was supposed to go. Wish I had playing experience to go with my watching 30+ years experience watching football.

    • @ahmedammar10
      @ahmedammar10 5 лет назад +13

    • @roscoedash6673
      @roscoedash6673 5 лет назад +31

      The kicker is the worst person to throw a screen pass like that for. He's going to have the least experience running the ball with confidence through such tight traffic. And he's not even equipped with the proper padding to take hits so you're risking injuring your most important special teams player for almost no chance of scoring. So I can't blame them for assuming the kicker is just a decoy.
      I thought the lopsided formation was a decoy to get a 1 on 1 on the opposite side of the field. At least that theoretically gives you a decent chance of scoring if it's a particularly favorable matchup. Maybe you've got a special teamer who's really good at breaking 1 on 1 tackles and is fast enough to gain ~20 yards and score, idk

    • @salukidc
      @salukidc 5 лет назад +6

    • @ytnym
      @ytnym 5 лет назад +5

      I agree. And to those who think that this is the dumbest play ever, but ABSOLUTELY NOT dumb enough that the play couldn't possibly have been drawn up to go to the kicker for a screen behind a wall of like 7 blockers because "he's not even equipped with the proper padding", I just don't get it. The coach himself had thrown the ball to a kicker in a trick play. My thinking is, kicker goes out for a screen, ball is snapped, pass rush is immediately on the passer, kicker's not immediately looking for the pass (he's still running to his spot, blind to the action behind him), passer freaks, throws the ball in despair to god only knows... and it's intercepted.

    I Referee HS Football. And I once was working a 1st Round Playoff game where 1 team ran The Swinging Gate every single play until the last few minutes of the 4th Quarter where they were just running the ball to close out the WIN. I never knew there were so many options available on The Swinging Gate. It was WEIRD but also really cool because it is something that most people will NEVER see even 1 time in their whole lives... let alone try to figure out HOW to Ref the game.
    Most of the time when a team uses the Swinging Gate they just Motion into it and then shifts back into a normal Field Goal/P.A.T. Formation. And then they Kick.
    But they ran what I have to assume was every possible option. The Center with a Lineman to his Right would snap to the QB in Shotgun. The QB would run up the Middle.
    A Wr to his Right would be the only player on that side of the Field looking for a 1-on-1 pitch and catch kind of play. 1 Wr to the Left would run deep.
    Another Wr to the Left would stay behind the 3 Linemen split wide to Catch the ball for a Screen Pass. A TE would LineUp at the End of either Line.
    And a Slot Back would Lineup in 3 or 4 different spots and sometimes would RUN the ball. The main options were the QB and the 3 WRs.
    We had to relearn who had to watch what as an official on the fly because that formation is NOTHING like a typical play. And we only had a 5 man Crew.
    We had to adjust where we stood. We had to give up certain players that are normally the guys we have to watch and get another Ref to pick them up.
    AND of course we had to pick-up players we don't normally cover to help other Official. I'm just glad I wasn't the Line Judge. He always had 3 Linemen and 2 Wr's in his face.
    Normally he only has 1 to 3 Wr near him and when that happens he gets help from the Back Judge shading to his side.
    As an Umpire I mainly watch the Linemen all day and any Defenders that are taking on the Linemen. I had to watch the Slot Back lots of times.
    And the Linesman behind me had to watch every Snap to be sure each 1 of them was Legal which is my job usually... because he only had 1 Wr on his side of the Field.

      The Colts play is a lot less egregious when you actually hear the explanation for it. The guy who was supposed to be the center on the Colts play (who had practiced the play as the center before) wasn't in the game so they stuck another guy in. The other guy hadn't practiced the play but had read the playbook and knew what the play was... but the playbook said "if the QB gets under center, snap the ball." Also, right before they run the play Pagano tells the QB to try a hard count to attempt to draw the Patriots offsides if the trick play doesn't work in drawing a penalty. So the impromptu QB sees the Patriots not subbing out their defense (which is what the play was designed to do - catch the Patriots subbing with the wrong number of men on the field) and gets under center to try a hard count. Basically all the players did what they were told but Pagano didn't know or realize that their substitute center was under the impression that he was supposed to snap the ball when the QB got under center.

    The tragedy was in running the same play twice. One guy ran block and release out and the other ran a kind of crossing route. The problem is after the timeout and they got a chance to get a look at what they were doing and seeing where the eligibles were lining up, the defense was clearly instructed on who was going out for a pattern. The play was obviously supposed to be an inside outside read, as you see the inside guy goes first on a crosser, likely to rub the defender playing the center eligible, who was supposed to block and release to the outside but both players in front were covered because the outside guy couldn't get a rub on the center's defender because he was playing too far off. It was actually a good play by Hunter to throw deep because that was the only other read, as there was no way the kicker was getting the ball on a screen.
    The concept seemed questionable as you're asking a lot out of your punter to lob a pass accurately over unblocked defenders wanting to knock his head off and asking for that kind of chemistry out of your punt team. Incredibly poor use of personal unless the team is caught unprepared

      John I know that this is old but it wasn't the centers mistake. The playbook said to snap the ball if the "quarterback" gets under center. The coach made a last minute change to try to draw the Pats offsides but never told the center so he snapped the ball.
      My source on the is Pat Macafee, the Colts punter. If you want a full explanation he has one on RUclips.

      Sort of, but I wouldn't even blame the center. Last second Chuck Pagano said to snap the ball if the QB saw an opportunity to get a first down and lining up behind center was supposed to be the signal to snap the ball. I blame Pagano for unnecessarily adding complexity to the play which caused the ball to be snapped when it wasn't supposed to

    I’m pretty sure the plan was to throw to the center (#87). The Redskins shift to a center-eligible formation. The center is the end man on the line of scrimmage, which makes him an eligible receiver (as long as he is not wearing #50-79 or he has reported as an eligible receiver). The Redskins were hoping the Giants didn’t realize he was eligible and would not cover him when he ran a pass route. I believe all the shifting and motion to the left was a decoy but, when the holder got pressured and center was covered, he had no choice but to heave it that way.

    For real tho! When I used to coach... I would occasionally use a weird formation just to get the other team to burn a timeout. Or on defense, allow the team to set up after a timeout, see what set they choose, then immediately use my timeout so I have a little for information

    The Worst American League Game: Rangers Vs Orioles Aug 23, 2007. Started as an Orioles shutout up three, then the Rangers get 5 in the 4th, making it look like it might be a good game.
    Then the rangers get 9 in the 6th, 10 in the 8th, and 6 more in the ninth, turning the whole game into a frightening meat grinder of a blowout the likes of which had not been seen for over a hundred years. Rangers win 30 to 3.

    This is a little bit similar to a play we run called Pepper for my high school team. We have 1 back, a center and a QB in the backfield, and the same formation to the left with all the guys. It's meant to draw the whole team over to the blockers and the center (who is an eligible receiver since he's last on the line) would run out for a pass and the QB could throw it to him or hand it off. When Jim Zorn did not make them shift back for a field goal upon realizing that there were 5 guys in the box, the play would never work. This play is also supposed to be for a 2 pt conversion aswell so idk what the thought process was...

    The play is called " the swinging gate". You're trying to get a numbers advantage either wide to throw the screen pass , or in the middle with a run option / pass . It depends on how the defense lines up. From 28 yards out this play makes zero sense , mostly teams try this in high school or college on PAT tries .

  • @steveng6704

    This play worked Week 13 in 2019, on 4th and goal. Miami scored a TD with a very similar trick play against the Eagles.

  • @Letterman0412
    @Letterman0412 5 лет назад +1

    I see what they were trying to do. They hoped the defense would aggressively attack the blockers, who they think are setting up for a screen pass to the kicker, and that one guy who they ended up throwing to would be able to sneak through the defense at the last second undefended for a TD. A horrible play call still and made even more horrible by the fact that they showed their hand then still tried to go through with it.

    Could the ball possibly be supposed to go to Gano on a quick pass and maybe he would streak down the field with multiple blocks in front of him? It looks like that's what NY thought was going to happen and the punter just panicked when he saw unimpeded rushers coming right at him.

  • @TheLocalLt

    My friend had gotten free tickets to that game, so I went with him. We walked about a mile, in 2 1/2 feet of snow, to Fedex Field from the metro station. Our seats were upper deck, I mean way up. But we were the only people in the entire section. It was about 20 degrees with wind chill. Brian Mitchell was being incucted into the Redskins Ring of Famd that night, I still have my souveneir cup. The game was laughable, as we expected having known who the Redskins were, and we left about half way through the second quarter. We just missed enduring the infamous honor of watching this play live. Such a tragedy, the play, and the fact that we missed it.

    I totally expected the colts play when i clicked, but i wondered how you stretched it so long. That was obviously a horrible call but i knew it wasn't supposed to be snapped. I'm somehow relieved that that wasn't the worst playcall ever. I'm a pat's fan, after all. Also, for what it's worth, i firmly believe the Belichick's 4th and 2 call against the colts was a worse playcall than the Seahawks' pass play against us.

  • @613and802
    @613and802 5 лет назад +3

    Ok everyone on here has this play all wrong. The ball is supposed to be thrown to the tight end/center. Watch him delay before running out into the flat. The play is designed to get everyone looking left with the pre snap shift and pre snap motion. Then you hope no one covers the center who is actually eligible because he is uncovered. That nuance might have worked originally, but this was no doubt covered during the Giants timeout.
