I have to disagree with the final thought here. I think the hatred for him doesn't come from him challenging the hierarchy of the NFL, but rather throwing his teammates under the bus in the media in an extremely disrespectful and unsportsmanlike fashion, and then giving another interview where he claimed his out of line comments were the catalyst to the team's success. Honestly, If I were Peyton or an Indy fan I'd be pretty harsh on someone who blatantly disrespected his teammates and then literally bragged about that disrespect too!

What really ended Mike's career was the lingering hamstring injury that he got in that last season in Indy. It never healed correctly, and he pushed himself to be ready Day 1 in Dallas. This really was a case of the media making more of a situation than there really was, but Vanderjagt was a unique individual among kickers - he was brash, cocky, tall and his looks were compared to Val Kilmer. He had as close to celebrity status as a kicker has ever seen, with perhaps the exceptions of Adam Vinitieri and George Blanda (yes, I know, George was a quarterback, too... actually, he played in the days of multiple team roles when he started.) Many people have interpreted the comment by Payton to have defined Mike's career, but they could not be more wrong - it merely colored how people saw it, particularly at the end. The beef didn't end his career, his hamstring did.

@@justinztan Tom 😂😂😂 sorry I've seen him and Joe Montana play and trust me Montana was miles ahead talent wise. Rings does not mean your talent level is greater than another player. Montana would have been the first QB to win 3 SUPERBOWLS in a row if were going by that. But Leonard Marshall in the 1991 NFC championship game tackled Montana with a dirty hit in my opinion from behind knocking Montana out of the game. And from then on Montana was never the same player the rest of his career.

Fun fact: when he was kicking at WVU, Vanderjagt once bet me $5 I couldn't catch one of his punts. When I did, he promised me he would leave the money at the front desk the next day. When I went to retrieve it, he'd left me a coupon for a single McDonald's cheeseburger instead.

@Severoquai what the hell are you even talking about? Peyton was perfectly fine off the field, and handled the press like a pro. Everyone get emotional at times, but Peyton was one of the toughest interviews and reporters admit this. They just could never get anything out of him and reporters hated that. Peyton always was prepared and said the right things. To call Peyton Manning stupid and unwise is pretty ignorant if you ask me. You clearly havent followed Peyton's career that much. And he called Vander stupid because he started running his mouth about his own team and saying he didnt like his own team to the media, which is a big no-no in the NFL.. and he is a kicker.
