Bobby Bonilla’s beef with NYC saw fans, media, and his team turn on him. Also, it made him very rich

- How do you turn money into lots more money? Well, if we follow the Bobby Bonilla model, you simply beef with your employer. Bonilla was a thorn in the NY Mets side, twice, yet ended up turning the $5.9 million left on his '99 contract into just about $30 million.
Sure, there were some unpleasant moments, like when he had to wear earplugs so he couldn't hear the home crowd booing, or the time the media noticed he was wearing earplugs to block out the boos. And sure, it was kinda a unique case in which famous liar-cheater Bernie Madoff made Mets ownership confident they could handle lots of interest on a deferred contract. But hey, you can't argue with results!

Bobby Bonilla is the American Dream: he played pro baseball, won a World Series and he gets $1.2 million a year for 24 years for challenging his boss to a fight.
You don’t even need to be American for that one. That’s just the dream.
Bobby won this beef by a mile. He won a world series after the Mets traded him the first time and they have won none and are still paying him millions of dollars😂😂😂
I'm just gonna pretend it he was secret plant to screw the hated Mets
The fact that the Mets still pay Bonilla to this day is a result of probably the best move in franchise history
@@AidanCulverREAL almost every team does this
He sucks lmao not like he contributed to the World Series and also some contracts are like that for every team this is just a little longer so sure but LOLMETS
Sure Bobby won big and it continues but still I think about how he coulda and shoulda won even bigger, how?
Easy, by just focusing on being really relatable like admit whenever he struggled ok yes I stink just now and I'm trying to turn it around for the team and the fans. See? That's a pure genius boss strategy. The fans would have loved that he could have still won his chip them come back home and play and grow his fan love and even today he could and would have been a big boss pitch man for any and everything NYC. That's worth more in dollars and fame even more than the 30mil. Fan love will always trump hat from the public.
The Mets investing with Bernie Madoff makes this whole insane story even more insane.
ruclips.net/video/fYJW6B902xE/видео.html
This video covers the whole story. They accused Fred Wilpon of knowing what Madoff was doing. Fred Wilpon paid 162 million in a settlement before it went to trail. It's even more insane than you think.
Certainly adds to the spectacle
@@unfortunatelyunknown1414 And that’s on top of the $700 million he lost because of Madoff’s scheme.
I think the craziest part is that Wilpon remained on the MLB Finance Comittee (maybe even chairman?) even after the Madoff debacle became public.
Bobby Bonilla is probably the only person who made money off of Bernie Madoff.
The thumbnail kinda makes it look like Bonilla had a beef with the mascot.

Bobby Bonilla still collecting money from the Mets to this day means he was the real winner

Bobby Bonilla was the best contract in Mets history, due to the contract we had the budget to get Mike Hampton who led us to the World Series (before choking) and then was picked up in Fa, we we're given a consolation pick and that pick turned into David Wright. Goat Bonilla

Had Bonilla been healthy at the end of Spring Training in 2001, the Cardinals we’re going to go with him. He started the season on the D.L. instead forcing the Cards to go with an unknown rookie named…….Albert Pujols.

As a Cardinals fan we are highly grateful for that!!!
They also gave Montreal the option between Fernando Tatis Sr or Pujols in exchange for Dustin Hermanson (A career journeyman). Expos picked Tatis...

@Lighthouse in the Storm Today was Bobby Bonilla Day!
There's nothing better than a nice, juicy serving of beef in the morning.
Now I want a steak. Thanks a lot
@@Balon-Breakspear nothing to it but to do it, buddy!
I love the smell of beef in the morning. Smells like... victory (for Bobby Bonilla).
Is it just me, or does Bobby Bonilla look like a sober Daz Dillinger?
This would have been a classic if Seth or Will narrated it.
"Bobby Bonilla playing for the Mets could have been the triumphant story of a New York City kid making it big and being the hero of his home city."
Oh, but it is, and he is.
@Lighthouse in the Storm what happened?
I don't even watch baseball and I've found my new favorite player. What a hero.
I love this story because it is so similar to how the New York Islanders ( which are usually associated with the Mets by NY fans ) have almost the same exact story with a goalie named Rick DiPietro. They’re paying him $1.5M every July 1st until 2028. Feels good being a Rangers and Yankees fan.
Yup, because almost the entirety of both of those teams' fanbases is from Long Island. Ive known one or two Met fans from the Bronx, and been like, "Huh?" (Only explanation is if they were kids in '86). As for Manhattan people who root for the Mets,it's usually just transplants and Yankee-haters
Paying $28 million a year to a postseason choker like A-Rod whose entire time with the Yankees was tainted by steroids isn't much better. Neither were those Eric Lindros and Pavel Bure contracts.
1940
The money throwing thing wasn't because of Bobby Bo: it was because of the after effects of the 1994 Strike and the "greed" incident at Shea a few days into the 1995 season.
Every July 1st, Bobby Bonilla wakes up with a smile on his face; and someone in Mets payroll starts the day off with a Scotch.
If I were Bobby Bonilla on July 1, I'd be smiling too.
Bobby Bo's contract was the greatest finesse in sports history.

Not really, plenty of guys had similar contracts before and after him.
Not even close I swear some you are such casuals. Most teams have these contracts this was just a little longer than others and also this led to David Wright a much better player than this bum will ever be

To still get paid for the next decade and a half and not have to work for it, I think almost anybody with a brain would take that and I mean some of us don’t hate Bobby. In fact we’re just envious of him because he’s getting paid more in retirement than what any of us could earn from our retirement lol
He's not getting paid not to work. He effectively loaned part of his salary to the Mets, and they are re-paying the loan. What makes it a good deal is the 8% interest rate. In 1999 that didn't look exceptional, but through a period of historically low interest rates he has been collecting on an investment which is paying a better return than any other he could have got. The only risk e faces is the Mets becoming bankrupt before the loan expires.
This story is a great representation of the dysfunction of the 90s and 00s Mets.
The Mets are still dysfunctional. Despite having the biggest payroll in MLB, they're almost in last place in their division and keep getting beaten or swept.
The Bonilla and Bonds Pirates man, that was my favorite team as a kid growing up on little league. Wish I would have kept their baseball cards.

Do Rick DiPietro next. Thr NHL's version of Bobby Bonilla
I'm just wondering. What's the NFLs version of Bobby Bonilla day? Can someone help me with this?
DiPietro didn’t really have a beef with the organization though
Mike Milbury would be a good choice for the worst NHL GM/coaching hire.
@@samortmann5003 Yeah, he was the Bill O'Brien of hockey. Also, I agree with Derek. It's not quite a fair comparison. DiPietro was a mess in terms of injuries, but he wasn't a problematic guy. The only reason he got paid for forever by the Isles organization is because Milbury is a moron, not because the Isles were making what turned out to be bad investments.

Great job once again, Secret Base! 👍😉 Could you do a beef history story about Michael Jordan’s beef with Chicago Bulls GM Jerry Krause? I don’t know if you’ve already done so, but Jordan hated Krause’s guts. It all started back in the 1985-86 NBA season. Michael spent much of that season on the injured list. But he justifiably criticized Krause’s commitment to building a winning NBA team. And…it was all downhill from there.

Good timing posting this the day after the Mets lost first place.
So I’d never seen any photo of the money throwing, but I was there for the game. We were on a high school trip to NY and somehow we ended up going to the home opener, and it was a near riot: fights in the stands, the three guys throwing money over the strike, multiple guys trying to scale the outfield fence to evade the cops after rushing the field over the game, just general mayhem, or what you would call a Mets game. We were lobbing paper airplanes made from extra souvenir program books they gave us and nobody cared because the cops had much bigger problems.
Our teacher got us out of there early; after being used to the sterile world of the Skydome this was a much different experience and I’m pretty sure he was worried for our safety. Still the most memorable game I’ve attended, including an ALCS game.
Rickey Henderson's involvement in all of this is mad funny HAHAHAHAHA
