Jerry West's beef with the Lakers complicated his legendary history with a legendary franchise

  • The great Jerry West is perhaps the definitive Laker -- a legend with a hand in building almost all of that franchise's glory. However, in his latter years, West developed a bit of a feud with Lakers management. The seeds of that beef were planted many years prior, but took a while to fully blossom. All told, it's a fascinating but pretty typical story for a franchise that ranks among history's greatest and among history's most complicated.

Well wishes to the family of Jerry West, who passed away at the age of 86 the day before this episode of Beef History published. This video was conceived and produced while West was still alive, but we hope it's helpful in contextualizing West's brilliant career and the end of his relationship with the Lakers. Rest in peace, Jerry.

The beef history with Phil Jackson and Jerry West goes deeper than the bosses daughter dating the coach. It had more to do with a specific incident. Both Jerry West and Phil Jackson are control freaks. Jackson wanted to have a closed door meeting with the team. Jerry West wanted to sit in on the meeting. Jackson wouldn't allow it. A heated argument took place and West wasn't backed by DR Buss on the issue.

Also a 5X All-Defensive point guard. They didn't keep track of steals back then but Lakers scorekeeper John Radcliffe said that if steal stats had been kept for West’s career, he would easily be the league’s all-time leader. This is a beef I've been waiting on for a while to discuss. It's too bad Jerry is going to his grave knowing that a ownership under appreciated and under valued his importance and influence for all he did for that franchise and made it for what history it currently has, and took it all for granted. What a shame honestly. He didn't deserve that

He threatened to resign if they did the trade, he's done that a few times over his executive career. Another example is after the Lakers lost to Houston in 86 Dr. Buss had been looking into a "upgrade" that would send James Worthy to Dallas in exchange for Mark Aguirre and Roy Taperly. West got pissed when he learned about it and threatened to resign if they did the trade and good thing to since Worthy was so important, all the Lakers needed was a better backup Center which they got in Mychal Thompson and won two more titles.

It must really sad sight to see a guy who spent his entire 14-year career with one franchise have a beef with that same franchise and this served as a precursor to Scottie Pippen's beef with the Chicago Bulls years later. RIP Logo.

    • @1124-w9d
      @1124-w9d 7 месяцев назад +11

This is possibly worse, i think. The bulls quarrel with Pip was solely for the money, and their management was famously cheap. They were like that to everyone except Jordan, and that was because he was far too valuable. The beef lasted from when Pip's value overgrew his contract until 98, which is like 6 or 7 years. Bulls didn't really beef with Pip after that.
But Lakers consistently undermining West throughout his career is pretty nasty. And the guy was a Laker for life. Pip actually delayed getting a surgery until the 97-98 season begin because of his grudge with the management, and he ended up getting big bucks elsewhere. But West stayed with the franchise for decades until he finally gave up.
I'm not saying what Bulls did to Pip was OK, but I think it's extra wrong when a guy as loyal to the franchise as West, a guy nicknamed 'the logo' gets this kind of treatment.

I read Jeff Pearlman's book about the Shaq/Kobe Lakers which goes into a lot of this, and apparently, Phil Jackson was just such an A**hole to Jerry West, and treated him like the bottom of his shoe, which is sad. It's a shame that a franchise that Jerry West gave literally everything to, ended in beef.

Jerry West lived a profound basketball and American life - iconic as a player, executive and looming figure in the history of the game.
He was an MVP, a champion, a gold medalist, a dynasty-builder and literally the league’s logo.
West ended his playing career with 14 All-Star, 12 All-NBA Team and five All-Defensive Team selections, and scored 25,192 points, 6,238 assists and 5,366 rebounds in 932 games, translating to an average of 27.0 points, 6.7 assists and 5.8 rebounds per game.
After retiring in 1974, West transitioned into a successful executive role, shaping the Lakers' dominance through strategic draft picks and trades.

The way they treated him makes me want to puke and start supporting anyone else, even the sick Celtics. The Buss family will have a lot of questions to answer for. Jerry West’ passing this week will bring to light and the forefront just how sickening and absolute PATHETIC the Buss Family really are! To not have taken care of the Logo for his tireless commitment and dedication for over 40 years to the Lakers organisation IS REALLY CHEAP and NO CLASS! Downright PATHETIC. I for one, would love to see someone else ( with real class and REAL MONEY) BUY the Lakers Team and start respecting the coaches and staff, and players by really valuing their contributions, pay them their worth and appreciate and treat them like other teams around the league do! I also believe, Mr Clutch will have the last laugh, where He is going, Jerry Buss can only hope to go. Not saying The Logo was perfect or a saint, but he treated people with respect, showed gratitude, kindness, empathy and love. Buss family all about power and wealth…..can’t take that stuff to heaven. REST IN ALOHA Mr. Jerry West🙏🏾❤️🤙🏾.

Jerry Buss did great work with the Lakers and he's definitely one of the greatest nba owners in history.
Downside though is the Lakers might end up being an example of why you don't run a business with your family members with all the infighting and drama. Also not having romantic relationships between personnel within the organization.
West was done dirty. He was a huge part of the Showtime era and the Kobe and Shaq three-peat, not to mention his hall of fame playing career. Not being on the top 5 Lakers list was cold. Should be on both the players list (Magic, Kareem, Kobe, Shaq and West) and all around Laker. To be fair, an all-around list is tough. What about Bill Sharman, Pat Riley? LeBron I would have on a greatest Cavalier list more than the Lakers.

OK so single handily Jerry West turns around the Lakers - all by himself. That was after he became a true SUPER STAR playing guard for lakers for 14 years. Then in comes Phil Jackson who was the right coach at the right time but Phil then decides he wants to sleep with the Lakers's owners daughter. This is called "Dipping Your Pen in Company Ink". One thing West isn't is dumb. He can see the writing on the wall. Jackson coaches team and then.plays house with Jerry Buss daughter. Pure power play, thus leaving West no choice but to leave. Phil has and EGO the size Blue Whale and Jeanie Buss is someone who strips first and thinks later. West ranks all time top 5 guards, if not top three. He ranks number one and NBA general manager. West is the Lakers but alas with air head Jeanie running Lakers - the Lakers are no longer Jerry West's best memories. Sad because this guy was wall ALL CLASS.

And thank you for EVERYTHING you’ve done for the league! Top 5 most vital people ever when it comes to the nba!

Jeanie Bust and the Rambis couple drove the Lakers into the ground. Also shout out PJax and his smugness

There must be a lot of behind the scenes stuff that we don't know...for it to end like that is very sad.

How do not people understand, Kobe and the Lakers DO NOT WIN his 4th and 5th title with out Jerry West. West Gave the Lakers Gasol to keep Kobe from leaving LA

West had Gasol in Memphis so he knew the kind of player he was. West was great at seeing talent

I'll be forever grateful, as a Warrior fan, for Jerry's influence on Golden State and their titles.
Never did I believe watching them win 20 games a season during the 2000's that they'd win 4 titles in 7 years while making 5 straight finals and Jerry was just as important in that as anyone else.
