As a Redskins fan in the 80's you always had to watch for Danny White taking off or throwing on 4th down in punt formation. Probably gave him a couple extra yards on his net punting average as teams had to take into account that he was a skilled quarterback in addition to being the punter.
Danny was an all around athlete. Played Third Base on a pair of Baseball National Championship teams in addition to rewriting the team record books for passing and punting. Might have been the best athlete to ever come out of the State of Arizona.
Just came back to this video after two years and my favorite part is 5:22. Thielen was so much of a nobody that the announcer felt the need to clarify he was a WR. Nobody needs that clarification in 2019.
Part of it is that you don't see nearly as many long runs anymore. Defenses are much faster overall and pretty much every scheme is designed to keep everything in front of you and make offenses execute ten plus play drives if they're going to score on you. Most big plays these days are passes where all of the yardage is gained on the pass and the receiver goes down immediately after the catch. Plays where a guy gets the ball and motors thirty plus yards downfield are exceedingly rare now.
Exo Games there is no such thing as a planned fumble with defenders coming at you. What kind of fake is that? They see the ball on the ground and get confused on what to do next
Incredible. How could you omit the greatest fake punt of all time? Larry Siepel of the 72 dolphins. Without his fake punt/run in the championship game against the Steelers there may not have been a perfect season.
Punters are pretty damn important if you want to control field position, generally, you have a backup QB, you don’t have a backup punter. Your kicking dude gets hurt in a game, you have to figure something out to keep field control under control.
Alpha Gametauri sorta yes? That’s usually your first choice as an emergency punter but it’s not an ideal situation to be in. It’s a bit like asking a heart surgeon to do an appendectomy.
In a 1982 game at Washington, the Cowboys were about to punt from deep in their own territory. The Redskins, setting up for a return, didn't rush White. Danny must've thought "If they aren't going to rush I might as well start running." So Danny took off. I don't recall how far he ran, but I'm guessing he had run about 10, maybe 15 yards before the Redskins realized that he hadn't punted. During that first 10-15 yards, except for the punt returner nearly all of the Redskins ran in the same direction as Danny. It would be great to locate the film of that play. The Cowboys won 24-10. It would be the Redskins' only loss during the strike shortened season. Man, Danny was definitely a multi threat.

TheJFerg24 I'm a cheifs fan and in the days where we were awful I actually looked forward to colquitt punting because he put so many inside the ten, his brother is a good punter too.
Garo’s wasn’t a fake punt. Worst fake field goal? Stenerud in a playoff game. The snapper was supposed to snap in to Jan, but didn’t because Jan wasn’t looking. Jan wasn’t supposed to be looking.
Two points. 1. If it's a bad snap or the punter drops the ball, it ain't a fake. 2. One of those Rams fakes against the 49ers looked suspiciously like a "read" obtained from videotape rather than a design fake. The CB comes in to try a block, leaving the gunner-turned-receiver in acres of space. If the CB stays on him, they kick it away. Not hard for the special teams coordinator to alert the punter and gunners to that possibility before the game.
modusvivendi2 probably not. In most punts a punter is not going to have any sort of time to look and decied if they want to punt it away or throw a pass. By the time they even comprehend to wanting to throw it instead of punt they are already hit by a defender
modusvivendi2 I'm not saying that the play u talking about is not a read but how can u say it's not a fake punt. I'll do how u did it 2 points* 1. They are lined up in punt formation clearly 2. They did not punt they ball instead they faked it and passed for the 1st down.
Larry Seiple of Miami against Pittsburgh in the 1972 AFC Championship game. That play saved the Dolphins perfect season because up to that time the Steelers were dominating the game.
Brian Morman had several great punt fakes in Buffalo. He had over 100 yards rushing a few seasons, I only know this cuz I'm a Bills fan and we punt a lot...he was once the best player we had on the team...those were dark times for Buffalo
Yes... Moorman was amazing and there were definitely some rough years in there! Every few seasons we'd have an amazing start with a new QB and tell ourselves this is the year... only to be brought back to reality mid-season. Oh the joys of being a Buffalo fan!
Most of these were great play calling and day after day film study. I still don't think I would trust the average NFL punter or kicker throwing a decent pass for a first down. Holders are different especially if they are a Quarterback. Seattle SeaHawks Jim Zorn was always the one to watch.
4:31 Up by 7 from your own Endzone. That was one hell of a gamble. Can you imagine if it failed. I'm shocked by how many of these fake punts were done by teams that were ahead at the time.
I feel like that wasn't planned. When the defensive player shifts look out how the receiver waives to the punter, then look at the other rusher, he goes straight not looking for a pass at all.
Hell of a gamble is putting it lightly. If that play goes south and ends with a touchdown for the other team they’d never hear the end of it. Like writing yourself in the history books for all the wrong reasons kind of level.

Danny White was quite an athlete, and this compilation helps to show that. He could pass, punt, and as you saw, also could run. He was flying.
At ASU, he was more or less given a green light to run fakes if he saw something that led to believe he could pick up a first down.
