To someone who's not familiar with Mitchell, he can sound a little unhinged but this was by no means a rant. A Mitchellian rant is a force to be reckoned with and sometimes he doesn't even breathe when he's ranting. Quite marvelous really.
Know what you mean, but there's really nothing unhinged about criticising flat-earthers.
@Joe Bloggs There isn't a concise argument being had because flat earth theory is fundamentally an anti-argument. What proof is there of a round planet? Only centuries of mathematics analysing the curvature of the horizon, the way light interacts with the atmosphere, a basic understanding of how objects in space actually exist and that's before you get into the actual photographs.
But these points don't matter to flat earthers, because they use the same response for each of them: you cannot trust official government-sanctioned statistics. Which is, essentially, a conversation-ender. Do you see why healthy debate cannot be fostered like this? There is no agenda that they believe in, they literally just...do not believe the government. Which isn't unreasonable by itself, but if you ask what possible reason the government might have for this coverup they have no solid theory. It's literally just contrarianism with zero substance. How do you eloquently disprove an argument with someone uninterested in reasonable argument?
@Joe Bloggs If you buy a telescope or binoculars and look into the sky all you will see is approximately ROUND objects, so long as they are massive enough to have an appreciable gravity. Why do you think earth would be different? Because an imaginary Divinity decided to have fun one afternoon? You realise Terry Pratchett wasn't writing a text book?
@Joe Bloggs your opinion is they are not idiots. If they put a metal object into a live electrical socket 30 seconds after watching someone else being electrocuted they are idiots. There is a direct correlation.
@Joe Bloggs obviously you aren't the best of anyone. Barely adequate maybe, if we stretch definitions a bit.
Have you ever seen a more unlikely group of people sitting together having a conversation.
Life must be weird for David Mitchell. He goes from small BBC radio sitcoms to having friends who win Oscars and sitting on a sofa with a former US presidential candidate.

Yes, me and my wife!
I knew a guy in college who joined the Flat Earth Society back in the '80's on a lark, not because he thought the earth was flat but because he liked collecting their wacky literature. He said they used arguments such as: the surface of the water in this glass is flat, the ruler is flat, therefore the earth is flat. Then one day he was feeling down and I asked him what was wrong. He said he made the mistake of sending in his dues using a stamp with a picture of the globe on it, so they returned his payment and cancelled his membership.
That's quite sad because a relatively recent flat Earth Facebook group boasted that they had followers "all over the globe".
@@NewFalconerRecords No kidding
The flat earth society has no members as they are a troll group pushing garbage that no flat earther thinks

But the stamp was flat, what’s the problem? They think the Earth is round, just flat and round 😂

We know, THat is why flerfs are so annoying.

I once almost joined a cult, I certainly ain't a smart cookie with religion but I know well enough to sniff out BS, so when they were dropping beliefs that are so stupid I feel bad for the unfortunate people who fall for their traps because you can certainly tell a lot of them are good people but they were not educated enough to notice the BS. Certainly glad I stepped out after my first day, the level of being completely dumb to the facts and the level of ignorance for the truth is beyond belief. But that's what you get when cult leaders turn outsiders against you by saying everyone else is lying and trying to hurt you. You get people who will only share but won't debate.

So true. The difference from conspiracy theories and real science is falsification. Meaning real science doesn't try to find proof that their theories are correct, rather that they're incorrect. If the research can't show any proof that the theory is incorrect, then it might be that the theory has been proven- UNTIL further research shows any different conclusion. So there's a humility built in the scientific method completely lacking in conspiracy theories

Now they find each other on the internet. They find validation for their lack of understanding, and then they embrace it. They’re told “you’re one of the smart ones, you always knew they were lying to you.”
Facts don’t matter at that point, and yet another conspiracy theorist is born.
Throw in the special feeling conspiracies can give ppl, along with the Dunning Kruger effect, and we have what we have. This is all just an unfortunate, yet understandable side effect of the internet. This is something we’re always going to have to deal with.

@@MLB9000 lol, that’s so true
You make a fair point, and I mostly agree with you.
I do have a nagging suspicion that its also a side effect of society not valuing people for who they are, and measuring everyone against the same arbitrary yardstick. Generations of people spilling out of schools where many people consider themselves stupid because their skills and qualities are not recognized by the teaching and grading process.
If you think you are stupid, and you suddenly get told that you aren't, it kind of makes sense that you would want to maintain that feeling of validation.
Then you go online and drop flat-earth 'truths' and get derided as an idiot. It's a targeted insult to someone who deep down believes it to be true. Doubling down most likely seems the least painful route to take at that point.

What's wild is there is probably at least 1 person in the audience that had just been ranting to someone that very day about all the "evidence" that the Earth was flat.
Everyone thinks that the Flat Earth society is a joke. I used to as well and then I heard a neighbour arguing with someone on the phone saying the Earth is flat. It was disturbing. It was like listening to a mentally ill person vehemently defend his own insane delusions. However, while he is completely wrong, he isn’t mental. It was a display of the power of idiocy.
Maybe idiocy is a new form of superpower, like levitation or telepathy? Maybe idiots are going around "beaming" concentrated stupidity rays into people's heads. It would explain a lot.
And the sad or perhaps scary is that these people are procreating more than sane people
The Flat earth society is a joke. No flat earther believes that we are on a disc floating in space. Check out David Weiss for true flat earth. I have two science degrees from a well known university and have come to see the flat earth as our true home.
So what eveidence are you basing the earth being a globe, specifically?

"We Accept The Reality Of The World With Which We're Presented. It's As Simple As That." (Christof - The Truman Show)
I kept waiting for David Mitchell to drop the “…sphere itself” line. Never happened.
So…all glory to you great and hilarious messenger above!!
He was leaving that line for Lee Mack.
I adore him, but this wasn't a rant. Watch WILTY and you'll see a rant and the added pleasure of his interactions with Lee Mac. They're GOLD!!
WILTY is such fun! What with the rants of Mitchell, and the quick-fire wit of Lee Mac, all that is then needed is Bob Mortimer as a guest, and you're in for the creme de la creme of entertainment, and hilarity!
Brilliant delivery. One of my top 5 comedians. Does not get enough credit
Doesn't get enough credit? What? There isn't a single person in the western world who doesn't know who David Mitchell is. You can't turn the TV on without seeing him somewhere. It's not like he's obscure or something. I suppose you'll tell us Mick Jagger doesn't get enough credit as a singer next.

There is nothing to fear except sphere itself.
Not my quote, sadly.
A good way to round it off.
The Earth isn't flat, it's not round either.
It went pear shaped a while back.
Actually, an oblate spheroid. All comments may be directed to Stephen Fry and QI.
@@mattnachazel3525 Not precisely correct. Asimov had commented multiple times about the "pear shaped" earth. The problem is most folks think of Bartlett or Bosc when they think pear, but there are varieties (as Asimov pointed out in the article I rembmer) which are more nearly spherical. While I couldn't locate the exact reference I did find this: chem.tufts.edu/AnswersInScience/RelativityofWrong.htm in which he points out that oblate spheroid isn't quite correct because there are differences between the northern and southern hemispheres.
Haha word..
To be accurate, the shape is called "oblique spheroid" by scientists.

In David Mitchell's defense, when he saw the other guests he thought they were discussing the "Fat Head Society".

How do we know the earth isn't flat? If it were, cats would push everything off of the edge.
u don't even have to go up into space to prove the earth is a sphere; you can prove it by measuring the differences in the sun's angle at various points on earth simultaneously like eratosthenes did.
Where I live I can cross a pass and then see the Monterey Bay. The pass is only 1300' high and the horizon in front of me is about 30 miles wide, but even on that small of a horizon, it is easy to detect the curvature.
You don't NEED to do that, and the Ancient Greeks knew the Earth was round (or, at least, NOT flat) long before Eratosthenes and his experiments. They noticed that ships moving away became invisible from the bottom up: you could still see the top of the mast even when the hull had completely disappeared. The Greeks were not the only people to notice this. There is really only ONE explanation for this phenomenon.

The funniest thing about the flat earth theory is that litterally any test you put to it it fails at the first hurdle.
I’m afraid not. The funniest thing about the flat earth society is they couldn’t understand how Australia was known as ‘down under’, so refused to include it and wrote it out as an obtrusive outlier, until flat earth Aussies demanded access to join their ranks.

Flat earth = the most pointless conspiracy theory...ever.
"We must convince people that the Earth is round, and not let them realise it's flat."
"Why?"
"Because. Just because."
The point of the globe is to hide intelligent design/creationism and it removes us from being the geocentric centre of the cosmos.
It replaces humanity from being the central drama of the universe/existence to merely a mutated fluke somewhere off on the finge of a galaxy on a small unimportant planet.
The globe deception hides our divinity and persuades people to buy into the notion of the big bang which is the most illogical concept conceivable.
It's all part of creating an apathetic egoistic materialistic culture
Plys they could be hiding more land.
@just another human As opposed to reality vs fantasy? Good grief you guys are such emotional toddlers and intellectual eunochs. You're terrified of the universe and the chaos in nature. So you try to concoct order by creating these conspiracy theories which give you the illusion of applying some control and dominance over what terrifies you the most: insignificance. Plus it makes your lives more exciting and makes you feel more important and superior to others, whereas really you're just crying into the void.
@@brettpowell2033 Who? Who's hiding it? Who's 'they'? The thing that fascinates me about this drivel is the sheer scale of this conspiracy that you believe, a conspiracy that has apparently spanned centuries, involved millions of people from all over the world from different countries and cultures and religions, scientists, physicians, philosophers, politicians, civilians, all for some unknown reason colluding to make everyone believe the earth is round for no clear discernible purpose. It's beyond ridiculous.

"Many ancient cultures subscribed to a flat-Earth cosmography."

The challenge is coming up with one that didn't also believe in magic, monsters, and ghosts as well.
Need. More. David Mitchell!
His rant on QI about this is even more hilarious, and we found out that it's actually a very recent idea that the earth is flat, it wasn't really believed in the middle age and medieval times...
Correct. Humans knew and understood the Earth was round by majority since ancient Greece.
The idea that we live on a ball whizzing around the cosmos is also fairly bizarre when you think about it, I reckon. People have been questioning what we've been told about where we are eversince NASA tried to lie to us about going to the Moon. Official Apollo NASA photos have been proven to be fake thanks to photo editing software such as PS and there's a myriad of other things regarding the Apollo project that are highly suspect. When you get down to it the idea we live on a ball is a hypothesis at best, it really isn't as scientific as people would have you believe. For example the claim that large bodies of water can defy the laws of physics by forming themselves into spherical shapes outside of a container has yet to be demonstrated yet we all believe it to be fact. I posit that that is religious doctrine and has nothing to do with science.
@@mollykeane2571 Your worldview is based on who you can trust. @@mollykeane2571 wtf are you on about
@@mollykeane2571 The problem with conspiracies is the more people involved in a conspiracy and the bigger it is the harder it is to keep a lid on it. That is just objective reality you only have to look at the likes of recent whistle blowers on stuff like the Panama papers, lockdown parties, Snowden and more to realise this. If the moon landing was fake it would have been blown long by now. Also as Russia was and still is America's rival. Why would they not expose it as fake. They would have everything to gain from it and nothing to lose instead they have never even tried to discredit it. If any country would take great pleasure in it being fake then it is them, it just doesn't make any sense that they wouldn't.
