Someone make this man a 10mm ambassador! Give him his own line of 10mm ammo we can buy. I saw CCI made a line of 22LR after a popular RUclipsr… just sayin!!!!
I never purchased a 10 mm handgun because my retired buddies from Sheriff department told me the ammunition was watered down over 10 years ago. You have proven it still is, Thanks!
Tools has shown that Grizzly makes good 10mm, but yes a lot of 10mm out there is pretty bad. I think Buffalo Bore and Underwood are the best. I use Underwood
Wow!!! Plenty of factory 40 loads that are far more impressive in a smaller/lighter package. Good on you keeping them honest Sir. I love "Real 10", but I am 100% with you... it has to be real "10" !!!!
I remember when the 10mm first was introduced, yeah, I'm an old guy who's been shooting and reloading since then. The 10mm was labeled a 100yd cartridge in a 25yd gun. 1200-1250 fps with a 200 grain bullet was the common load. Pressures were correspondingly high, only one pistol was built expressly for the cartridge (research Dornhaus and Dixon and draw your own conclusions). All other companies that introduced pistols for that high pressure loading had failures with their offerings. Other than Thompson Contender, they couldn't handle the pressures. The cartridge lost interest as the Dornhaus and Dixon company folded. Fast forward about three decades, the cartridge was re-introduced with watered down pressures and velocities. The new crop pf shooters who latched onto the 10mm as the new and trendy high powered pistol round were unaware of it's past, but they got all giddy over the watered down version anyway. The pressures were lowered, velocities were lowered, Tools knows all this and his disdain is warranted. Rather than build a pistol around the cartridge, they watered down the cartridge and then pushed it as an ultimate CC round, which it is not, though it is a good cartridge. Could someone build a worthy 10mm pistol? Yes, but to be what it once was it would likely have to be a pretty beefy full sized duty weapon. Smaller, lighter framed concealed carry pistols just wouldn't hold up, but I'd love to see them pull it off.
A lot of people are too young to remember the original 10mm, or how the FBI requested the 40 caliber round that had similar dimensions to the 10mm but with more manageable recoil. you can get decent 10mm loads but they are usually paired with hard cast projectiles for bear. I remember law enforcement adopting 10mm for a short time until their frames started cracking under the recoil.
@@donakahorseNo 40 was created to match the ballistics of the fbi 10mm load and fit in a smaller gun as the issued s&w 1006 was larger heavier than most agents wanted to carry when they were mostly wearing suits and sitting at a desk.
Why do they even put that stuff out…… folks can use .40 cal in their 10mm and get better velocity than that. In my opinion that is just pitiful. Thanks for the test sir!!
when 10mm first came out it suffered from manufacturers not building guns with frames that could take the abuse, so ammo manufacturers neutered the rounds. They started building stronger pistols but ammo never recovered.
Man, I wish I could at least buy you a beer for all the money you’ve saved me in alerting me to inferior rounds. Especially when it comes to 10 mm! Before I knew about your channel, I blew a lot of money on some pretty piss, poor ammo and unfortunately I live in an area where going out and testing the way you do is nearly impossible. Unless I travel 60 miles or so! thanks again man keep up the great work!
Shame on Speer!! I’m not knocking the .40 but might as well just carry one instead of 10mm. That truly was pathetic power. The Gold Dot projectile is too good to be treated that way lol. Keep’m on their toes with these videos good sir. 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
I have a difficult time locating high powered 10mm. Only a few smaller companies make it. I just bought Buffalo Bore which just uses a Speer Gold Dot Bullet and Brass with a Speer headstamp on it. I don't know why some of the larger companies don't offer at least a couple of high-powered ammos and charge a little more. All they need to do is use the same brass and bullets that they sell to Buffalo Bore and spice them up a bit.
I'll keep giving my money to Buffalo bore and Underwood, maybe Sig Vcrown. Thanks for saving me 30 bucks, T&T, your service to us 10mm kids is greatly appreciated.
What a total bummer. I was contemplating buying some gold dots and this just shut that idea right down. I’m gonna stick to HST and know I’m getting what I pay for.
10mm Auto is a great cartridge, much like the 357 Magnum. Highly versatile, but the 10mm Auto is loaded to 40 S&W ballistics by so many manufacturers. Why carry a 10mm when you can get the same power from a 40 and the 40 magazine fits a 9x19mm size pistol frame? It is sad. Much like the 41 Magnum, the 10mm Auto is better as a reloader's caliber.
Great test as always Tools. I'm gonna stick with one of the three best you tested....Buffalo Bore 180,Grizzly 200, or the Underwood 155. I have a question...I have a G20 like you but recently looked at a Smith and Wesson M&P Performance Center 10 mm with the comp and the trigger felt soooo good and grips really nice for my small hands. Have you ever held one or know anyone with experience with this tool? Any opinions or observations you have about it would be greatly appreciated. I don't buy any ammo that doesn't have your stamp of approval, keep up the great work and I've told all my friends to check out your channel!!
Man, my wifey and I love your "vids". We love the amount that you LOVE 10mm. I've bought a G-20, for maybe 4 legged varmints , but our EDC are Gold Dot 9mm & Gold Dot .45acp. for the 2 legged types.
I reckon it is because it is marketed as Personal Protection. The lighter recoiling load can be plenty effective and be easier to shoot. Hunting loads would hopefully be full power and I would like to see ‘standard loadings’ at a full potential like virtually all other ammo. This would be similar to personal protection 44 magnum that is loaded to 80% as full power isn’t needed for anti-personnel use and is harder to shoot.
If I wanted a lighter load then I’d opt for the 40 S&W. I’ll just follow this channel religiously and opt for the underwood. That’s been the true performer so far that I’ve viewed.
Agree with you TNT 🧨 110%! I cannot believe those speeds and performance. 10mm is a great caliber. Especially with the 10mm ammo you proved as good stuff. The ft.lb. Energy is horrible. Great call out and commentary video and info. Thanks for sharing and be safe. 🇺🇸⭐️🇺🇸👍
Love your channel sir! I usually skip to the part showcasing the velocities, and if I see anything les than 1000 fps I know to not watch anymore, but anything faster than that I'm gonna pay attention to!
The 200gr +p Gold dot in 45acp is what i run in my G41, and it gets the same penetration with much more expansion. Speer is definitely playing it a little to safe with this loading.
Great review as always....As you implied this Gold Dot 10MM Auto is good for two legged self defense, however not fast enough for 4 legged critters like Grizzly and Underwood cartridges.
Well, this just proves that you really need to do some research and testing before you just assume that a certain cartridge is ‘up to snuff’!! Thanks for putting the word out about this particular ammo, and for all the other fine work you do!
The BEST 10mm for urban carry is “Liberty Civil Defense”. Why? Because 10mm suffers from over penetration. “Liberty civil defense is best for “outlier” carriages that are not normal to carry, such as 10mm or 380 out of a short barrel. For 380, you suffer from low velocities which are bad for expansion. For more normal round like 9mm or 45 auto, go with something else.
Thanks for the testing. 10mm is all over the place with performance. I'll stick with 40 S&W 165 grainers at 1140 FPS. Cheaper ammo and just as effective until you get 10mm that'll punish your pistol..
Agreed! Great 10mm potential out of the projectile. Another example of Federal/Speer not taking advantage and loading it down to velocities needed to push a 180 40S&W.
Great video! I like your opinion about the 10mm in terms of its power. This 10mm Gold Dot is a true trans ammo. It's a 10mm, but it identifies itself as .40 S&W. Underwood ammunition is following the same path.
Can you do a .40 s&w vs 10mm video where you put the same brands of ammo against each other to see which brands are just loading their 10mm to .40 spec? For example a .40 s&w gold dot vs 10mm gold dot HST Critical defense Critical Duty Speer Gold Dot And all the others you can get your hands on! I know it's probably too much for 1 video but maybe a series.
Another great trans-40S&W Subsonic find, Tools 😊 I agree with another commenter, you should have your own branded 10mm loading. Perhaps Speer 10mm T&T 1300 ft/sec loads 🔥
Here I am again for 10milli time !!!!! Wow might as well carry a 40 S&W seems like to me that’s what Gold Dot was thinking also 🤦♂️Thank you for all the testing you do I carry my Gen5 Glock 20 every time I’m outdoors and knowing what works great and what doesn’t and is real 10mil is critical. I carry only Underwood or Buffalo Bore and would also run the Grizzly 10mm because of your videos 👍🏼
I handloaded these as they should have been. 1250 fps. And boy do they expand! I had the same experience with the factory stuff very lethargic and lacking power. I happened to get my hands on some 200gr hst to reload believe it or not. I'm looking forward to loading them and comparing them to factory stuff
Years ago when I shot my buddys Colt Delta Elite with some Winchester 10mm ammo from his stash he has had since before they started watering it down, I said wow this is sweet. Then I shot some current made 10mm ammo, what a disappointment it was like shooting a 40 S&W. I load my own 10mm now for that reason and the cost of factory ammo.
I'm a fan of 10mm my own self. Let me reiterate an offer I made a few months ago. I have some of the original Factory Norma 10mm ammo, that came out with the Bren Ten, back in the day. Of course, it is no longer available. But I'd love to see how "the original 10mm ammo" would do in one of your tests. If you will agree to test it, I will send you some. Both 170 grain JHP and 200 grain FMJ FP. Let me know...
I have a buddy tell me these were some damn good loads. I took his word for it and had some of this in my Cart on bhammo and I just took it out. Thank you for this review. It’s a shame man, it truly is. Much like you, I didn’t pay what I did for the S&W M&P 2.0 10mm so I can pack ammo that performs like a 45 ACP. I’ll stick with my underwood and buffalo boar.
Man I always held Speer as the gold standard, no pun intended. This 10mm is pitiful! Thank you for your hard work and review! Saved me some money, I’ll grab some Buffalo Bore
Super Vel has a 160gr 10mm load that's supposed to be doing 1,250, although their site doesn't say what barrel length/gun was used to achieve this. Still, seems like a round worth checking out.
I really look forward to your ballistics tests - they are simply the best! Would really appreciate your testing the Underwood 9mm Luger +P 90gr. Xtreme Defender Platinum. I have been running this ammo alongside Federal HST 124 +P and would really like to see a comparison. Thanks.
They should have used the 180 grain and made it hotter. The Gold Dot is a great bullet itself, but it needs to be loaded to decent velocity to work as its supposed to do. I bought some Double Tap 40 S&W 180 grain liaded with the Gold Dot bullet that is 150 fps faster than Speer loads theirs. Double Tap and Grizzly Cartridge are the way to go if you want a proper loaded Gold Dot round especially in 10mm. Or hand load yourself
I guess some people have just started following you. You tested 22lr to death till the punch came out. I know when you test everything that people ask for you’ll be done. Then you’ll move on to the next troubled round and test it to death till you find rounds that work. Keep up the good work Tools 🔫💨🍮🙁👑🛠️
The Gold Dot .40 S&W tested 6 months ago showed a little more power from slightly shorter barrels. It also expanded more but still penetrated over 17 inches. Curious if Speer is loading their 10mm light on purpose or if quality control slipped.
I know most 10mm could be more spicy, but if you consider that many of these 230gr 10mm factory loads are still moving at 115gr 9mm velocities, that is still impressive...
Speer used to be top shelf. I would be worried they change the bullet recipe but it still looks good. Might still be worth buying if you reload them, use old powder for range ammo and put bullets 8n nickel cases. Just make sure you gel test the reloads.
As disappointed as I am in Speer, if they still have 10mm 180 grains it might be a whole different story.40sw I carry 180 grain bonded. Manufacturers don't like making +P or high pressure loads in 40 or 10mm, and the 200 grain bullet might have been brain fat and not wanting high pressure.
I have noticed that reloading 10mm I can very easily get max velocity with this cartridge that we're all looking for. However, the accuracy goes in the toilet. I get best accuracy with these lower types velocities. Not that it really matters all too much at defensive ranges. My 2 cents
TOOL ... !!!!! THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR 40 AND 10MILL TEST.... !!!! WHEN YOU TALK 10MILL YOU TALK MONEY IN TODAY'S GREAT PRICES ... !!!!!! ""GO OLD JOE """ .... ITS NICE TO SEE WHAT TO BUY WHEN IT COMES TO 10MILL ... THANKS FOR TAKING IT ON THE CHIN ... !!!!!! GREAT VIDEO ..!!!!!!
My 124 grain 9mm +p+ from Underwood is going 1370 fps from my 5" Glock 17 OEM threaded barrel, producing 517 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, that "10mm" is pitiful.
I agree with you on the lack of power in todays 10 mm. I believe the FBI and S&W hurt the 10 mm with the 40 cal. IMO very few manufacturers product full power 10mm. I would love to see you put 10 mil head to head with the 40 from the same company and show the difference or lack there of.
Long live full power 10mm!!! Keep them honest T&T!!!
Amen!
Someone make this man a 10mm ambassador! Give him his own line of 10mm ammo we can buy.

Not all is. And it’s wimps like your buddy and the FBI That got it watered down. Leo s whined nationwide that it hurt their skinny wrists.
Don't buy watered down ammo!
@ammocan2796 Also Sig V Crown
Tools has shown that Grizzly makes good 10mm, but yes a lot of 10mm out there is pretty bad. I think Buffalo Bore and Underwood are the best. I use Underwood
You're spot on. This load is easily bested by the 200 grain @ 1080 fps 45 +P Gold Dot.
It's a shame what they did with these.
Wow!!! Plenty of factory 40 loads that are far more impressive in a smaller/lighter package. Good on you keeping them honest Sir. I love "Real 10", but I am 100% with you... it has to be real "10" !!!!

you pull the bullets and re-charge-em up?

The BEST 10mm for urban carry is “Liberty Civil Defense”. Why? Because 10mm suffers from over penetration. “Liberty civil defense is best for “outlier” carriages that are not normal to carry, such as 10mm or 380 out of a short barrel. THIS MAN TOLD ME HE HAD A BIG BAD ASS GUN THEN TO MY SURPRISE I SAW A 45 GAP THE FIRST TIME ON THE RANGE ... ! ! ! LMAO ...!!!!!!!
Good gel test, we always expect better results from the defense ammunition than what we get. Thanks for the video 👍🇺🇸
Thank you sir.😎👊
Magtech is fairly good at 1200 fps (bottom line). I got good results for Fiocchi 10APHP and Atomic Ammunition as well.
I thought I replied on your last comment. You can email me at toolsandtargets@yahoo.com. 😎👍
@@ToolsandTargets You probably did reply to it, and I probably overlooked it. Sorry about that. :-) Email sent!
The perfect...PEOPLE round. People. Winter/ Summer. People.
Bless your heart
Speer/ cci has got some explaining to do. Definitely .40 s&w powder charge.
Don't mess with Tool's ten mil. 😆
Always love the videos
Appreciate that.😎👊
That wasnt a bad test for .40SW! XD Keep up the great work Tools!
Super Vel has a 160gr 10mm load that's supposed to be doing 1,250, although their site doesn't say what barrel length/gun was used to achieve this. Still, seems like a round worth checking out.
At least these are subsonic for use with a silencer.
when Underwood was making 10mm with the gold dot projectile, it was an awesome round.
Yep
I really look forward to your ballistics tests - they are simply the best! Would really appreciate your testing the Underwood 9mm Luger +P 90gr. Xtreme Defender Platinum. I have been running this ammo alongside Federal HST 124 +P and would really like to see a comparison. Thanks.
Appreciate that.😎👍
That Gimick Ammunition is most of the time a pure failure a real Thunder Terd 😊
Another good test thanks tools
They should have used the 180 grain and made it hotter. The Gold Dot is a great bullet itself, but it needs to be loaded to decent velocity to work as its supposed to do. I bought some Double Tap 40 S&W 180 grain liaded with the Gold Dot bullet that is 150 fps faster than Speer loads theirs.
Double Tap and Grizzly Cartridge are the way to go if you want a proper loaded Gold Dot round especially in 10mm.
Or hand load yourself
good video Tools, i would like to know what do you carry in your G29? Thanks.
Agreed on all points
😎👊
since you have done more 10mm testing than anyone else on YT. could you do a comprehensive list (maybe 10) of the best 10mm carry ammo?
I guess some people have just started following you. You tested 22lr to death till the punch came out. I know when you test everything that people ask for you’ll be done. Then you’ll move on to the next troubled round and test it to death till you find rounds that work. Keep up the good work Tools 🔫💨🍮🙁👑🛠️
Good Video Tools not the best for sure thanks for the information.
I'll stay with Buffalo Bore & Underwood. The velocity with these Gold Dots is pitiful. I get higher speed from my Glock 23 using Underwood.
This 200 grainer isn't impressive at all.
@@ToolsandTargets Yeah, I saw that. It's a shame too. Glad you do these tests so we can avoid wasting money.
Use the 40 with Remington HTP. At least it sails through 32".
😎👊
Speer used to be top shelf. I would be worried they change the bullet recipe but it still looks good. Might still be worth buying if you reload them, use old powder for range ammo and put bullets 8n nickel cases. Just make sure you gel test the reloads.
As disappointed as I am in Speer, if they still have 10mm 180 grains it might be a whole different story.40sw I carry 180 grain bonded. Manufacturers don't like making +P or high pressure loads in 40 or 10mm, and the 200 grain bullet might have been brain fat and not wanting high pressure.
Yet their 200gr .45acp +p marketed at 1080fps has been clocked hitting that and actually higher speeds on a few YT videoa out there.
We have the .40S&W because the 10mm was too powerful. So why handicap the 10mm to match it? It's like a classic Dodge Charger with a slant 6.
If you are paying attention 9mm one stop pistol rounds are regulated. The rest are being neutered or phased out.
Someone at Speer got a gold star for a cost improved 10mm! 😊
😂
My 124 grain 9mm +p+ from Underwood is going 1370 fps from my 5" Glock 17 OEM threaded barrel, producing 517 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, that "10mm" is pitiful.
I agree with you on the lack of power in todays 10 mm. I believe the FBI and S&W hurt the 10 mm with the 40 cal. IMO very few manufacturers product full power 10mm. I would love to see you put 10 mil head to head with the 40 from the same company and show the difference or lack there of.
