I am using the the rode videomic micro with the dongle due me having the the iPhone 7 . I really wanted to get the rode videomic me-L but hearing your sample it sounds a bit disappointing and tingy. Your channel is AWESOME and has been a great deal of help for me keep up the good work and keep crushing it .
On headphoned I can hear his voice a bit stronger and clearer and there is no echo from room (with iphone mic only there is definitelly echo and noise)
#QOTD My favourite mic is the Boya BY-M1 it has everything! Long cable, amazing sound quality, powered pre amp, really long battery life and one of the cheapest lav mics on the market.
You have a error in your video regarding the TRS connection on professional microphones. The professional microphone that you are using with the trs adapter is not stereo but balanced audio. Ground, Hot and Neutral. You need the ground for phantom power on condenser microphones as they require voltage to operate. TRS connectors can be found in a wide range of applications such as stereo headphones but in this application you are taking balanced audio and converting it to the trs connector with the phone.
Just been trying to work out how to use my Rode mic on iphone for my videos, as the built in mic doesn't like the sound of powertools. Another added bonus would be that I wouldn't have to drag my camera gear around with me all the time. Found this video and it was extreamely helpful Thank you. I have subscribed
I've been using the Shure MV88 for recording my concerts and also for some vlogs. The mic sounds amazing and I love it. However, I was really annoyed to find out that you have to use it in airplane mode (so no livestreaming), because it grabs interference from cell connections or wifi! Other than that it's perfect and built like a tank. If you wan't to livestream, avoid this mic.
How you do think this mic would be for recording standup comedy sets? All rooms sound different and I’m looking to cut down on some of the echoey-ness of certain rooms. Will this help with that?
@@MarioTontiComedy the only way to cut down on echo, is to have the mic placed close to the source (in this case your mouth). If a room has echo, a mic cannot fix it. The room has to be treated, or your have to put the mic very close to you. The only mics that could somewhat help are shotgun mics, but don't expect wonders.
I currently use both the RODE SmartLav+ and the RODE VideoMic Me (previous model) with my iPhone 7. Like Sean mentions if you want a mic that’s richer/deeper in sound and fantastic for podcast style narration go with the shotgun VideoMic Me (L). The SmartLav+ (definitely with extension cord) is what I use for my general talking-head style videos. Not as rich in sound but still solid for reducing most (but not all) echo.
When you’re using the SmartLav+, are you using filmic pro for the video..? The reason I ask is that I’m struggling with the SmartLav+ and the input volume in filmicpro in my iPhoneX. I have been using the videomic pro with filmic pro for a long time and have had no issues with it. The SmartLav+ just seems so quiet and I can’t seem to get it any louder.
Could you please tell me if I need to buy anything additional apart from the shotgun mic RODE if I want to record on my iPhone 12? Like a cable or something? Are they compatible?
I’m almost POSITIVE the first mic never was using the microphone but was still using the phone mic. I looked away from my phone screen, listened real hard and did not hear a difference. The reviews on Amazon are AMAZING. There is no way that difference is that tiny and the reviews are that good.
I too have - and love the sound of - a Shure MV88. I use it with an iPad mini 4, but when I’m outdoors and have the iPad in a Griffin Survivor case, I use either a CableJive dockStub (with a piece of duct tape to ensure the mic doesn’t fall off) or a dockXtender cable from the same company. Both have worked great for over a year now, tho’ you do have to keep an eye on the LED to make sure the mic stays connected. You must plug the mic into the stub or cable _before_ attaching to the I-device. On my Nokia 8 Android phone I use another solution: using FilmicPro, I attach a ZOOM H2n by USB mini to USB-C OTG cable, taking power from the phone. This gives you great quality stereo sound and even 4-channel or spatial sound. You can also use dead cat outdoors. You can also use the two devices separately and sync sound and vision in post.
The best one for iPhone (and I use it) is the Sennheiser HandMic. It's rock solid, super clean audio (and expensive), but if you're going for superior sound nothing is better.
Make sure you always balance the volume between microphones when comparing- when you switch to the Shure lav at around 11:50 there is a big jump in volume. It is standard practice as not to do this favours the loudest unfairly.
Very informative video, but please look up definition of "dongle". All those cables and add-ons you feature are adapters / converters, not dongles. A dongle plugs into something and has nothing connected to the other end!
Just Incase it helps, the reason the Shure mic on;y sounds great closer up is because it’s ‘omnidirectional’ (1-direction...not the boyband) it’s meant to function best 4-6” from the voice. The Rhode is also omnidirectional...BUT, Rhode uses higher quality guts so while it’s best closer, it still does a fab job a little further out. Add that fuzzy screen & you actually have the same quality potential as major tv camera mics had a decade ago.. Omnidirectional are for close up, shotgun mics are for 2+feet away. The Rhode is the closest to the best of both worlds, since a similar quality shotgun will start waaaay higher. Rhode’s brand is best in the lower priced tech right now. (I’ve worked with all of these as a commercial audio producer) If you’re gonna do video/audio for a year+, splurge for the Shure or Rhode (not the lavalier)
I got mine just few days ago BOYA BY-M1 and I'm using it on my Samsung Galaxy S8+ the audio quality is quite decent for only $18, and my review will be up on Saturday 5:30am Manila Time
my 1st buy for my youtube gear was the Boya mic you recommended a year ago. That was the first time I saw your channel. Thanks !. I always trust your product recommendations
The Shure MVL Lav is officially the winner. Nice/full lows, smooth highs, higher gain at a distance and a smoother sound. Thanks for the great videos as always! Would love to hear your thoughts on the Sennheiser MKE600 Camcorder Shotgun Microphone.
Smart lav sounds great! Better than Rode micro. There is an adapter that would allow you to have two smart lavs for interviews. Add the dongle and you can use the lavs on DLSR. BUT two smart lavs connected to the adapter is still one audio input, so editing audio is tough. Especially if your second talker isn’t talking at the same level as you. Something to consider.
R0de Smartlav+ best sound quality, even when one is not talking into the device, or have it and arms length away the sound quality remains excellent. I use one myself. Thank you for this helpful video.
Grové Erasmus Hi there, when you say you use one, is that whilst filming with the same device..? I am asking as I’m having trouble with the input volume level of my SmartLav+ in filmicpro on the iPhoneX.
Coolerking's Outdoor Adventures yes, with the same device. I used the SmartLav+ once with iPad and it worked fine, all my other use was with Galaxy S8. Wishing you well with your videos. My wife put the mic throughnthe laundry machine and since that happened recording volume is about 40% of what it used to be.
I actually went with two Zoom H1 recorder's the new one and older one for recording audio. I found it more flexible for recording audio because I can use the Zoom H1's at longer distances away from the camera. I can use it as a shot gun microphone. The only challenge is that I have to sync the audio after the fact in FCP X which is really no big deal.
Just bought the Rode VideoMic Me-L Directional Microphone for iOS Devices because of you - I hope it turns out well. My audio on my videos are sub par at the moment and I'm hoping this will help!
Sean... your video viralocity really works considering I've been binge watching your stuff for the last week! Helped me up my youtube quality game and ordered some stuff from your links. Excited to apply everything i've learned from you bro. Also, VRA has literally helped my channel start taking off lately. Thanks sean I've been wondering how to get a better sound with my phone. That's awesome. Your such a rock star with all this RUclips knowledge! Your helping change so many lives. We really appreciate it!!!
Thank you! This is exactly what I've been looking for. You've been a blessing in my life at the beginning stage of growing my YT channel! I've received positive comments about my videos but the only negative is the audio quality. I'll be purchasing the MV88 today. Many blessings to you ;)
Great vid Sean. I currently use the Video Mic Me on my old iPhone but will purchase the L for my 8+. I believe RODE has the best sound quality of all mics and I use the Video Micro, Video Go, Video Pro, and Smart Lav. I also picked the Boya BY-WM4 wireless lavs and they sound good too.
Can you use them on your phone as just a microphone and record video with a different phone? Or do you have to record the video when you use the microphone?
For me they all sound the same except those last two cables, which I'd get the shure one with an extension if it wasn't as expensive and, oh yeah, I have a Samsung
From personal experience the Smartlav+ from Rode is a great microphone, you get great audio quality using the Rode app with it, but you can also just plug it in and record directly as you video making it a lot easier to edit.
Is there any way to plug in an external mic into an iphone 8 while charging your phone at the same time? I was wanting to record videos while charging my phone but having only one lightning port taken up by that leaves me no ability to plug in an external mic :(
I loved the mic conversation. I’ve used the Shure MV88 before and was pretty happy with it. For what I’m going to be doing these mics are a bit challenging as the acoustic guitar sometimes overpowers the vocals BUT you can’t always drag a studio out and about with you lol. I’m excited to try out a few of the other options you’ve discussed here. Thanks, you’re really helping me up my game.
At 10:26 point in your video, you explained about using a dongle to plug into your “SmartLav+ mic and the other end is the lighting adapter into your iPhone. It would definitely worth noting that it’s not just any adapter. I bought this adapter and didn’t realise it was a “Headphone Jack Adapter”😅 I can’t record sound with this. I have just bought the “Boya BY-k3 Female 3.5mm TRRS Microphone adapter cable to lightning connector dongle. I paid $22 from Amazon here in Australia for this.
When using these Lightning plug in mics, you can't also have your phone charging, or can you? Are there any adaptors that will allow you to charge your phone at the same time you are using it to record? I need to use my phone to record a 2.5 hour choral rehearsal and sometimes an all day session @ 6hours and I doubt my battery would last that long. thanks for all the great info on microphones.
I’ve used the Shure mic for two years and have mostly great things to say. Portable and easy to use (used it to vlog in 7 countries this summer, no problem). But I have had several issues with functionality - I’ve shot videos only to discover the mic didn’t recorder any audio at all. Super frustrating, but who’s to say if that’s the mic or the phone itself. 🤷🏻♀️ And lately it’s had some static and feedback issues (that I think are from picking up waves or surrounding cell signals - doesn’t seem to happen if I shoot in airplane mode).
The Mv88 👍🏼 Everything you said about the pros is 100% true. And it’s still the only mic I use, just wish I didn’t dread hitting that play button every time after recording and waiting to see if it just failed to record the best take of a song or 20 minutes of content.
Destiny Guerra Could be app and memory related. Sound recordings often stop if memorystorage is limited even though still not full, so empty apps and pictures you don’t need for the moment and maybe you’ll be happier with recordings. My findings on iOS and good apps (but not MV-88).
So I just ordered the whole set up you recommended using your amazon links. Thank you for the content. Just about to start streaming on my other larger platforms and wanted to up my game. Thanks again!
im planning to buy one, what do you think is the best microphone to use when vlogging outside, especially when the subject is far away from the moc and still has a good audio? has like the noise reduction something like that. please someone reply ♥️♥️♥️
Thank you so much for taking the time in doing this microphone review. I just started my RUclips and Instagram channel. This information will be very valuable to me and going forward.
Thanks Sean for your great tips as always! Based on your recommendation here and some additional study, I have purchased the "Rode VideoMic Me-L Directional Microphone for iOS Devices" and used your affiliate code. Thanks very much! - Dane
I know this is an older review but I appreciate it still. I think one of my biggest issues with the on-phon varieties like the MV88 and the VideoMic Me L is that a case may interfere. I hate that most video packages and options require me to remove my phone from the case. Also, power quickly becomes an issue since iPhone only has the one port. Any solution that allos power while running and gunning video?
Still watching but so far the MV-88 was the best to me. Do you have any solutions for mobile on-the-go podcasting with multiple external mics for interviewing multiple people simultaneously and not having to either hold a mic in their faces or have them hand off the mics to each other?
Ahhh! Handy. Yes - for sure if I whip out my phone to do clips to incorporate in my vlogs there is a definite discrepancy in the audio quality compared to the proper camera clips. It's good to know there are some solutions out there!
I have been using lavalier mics from the "Source" (Canadian style Radio Shack) that are under $20. I actually use a splitter and have 2 of these lavalier mics running into my iphone 8 for 2 people interviews. I am really happy with the sound quality of this inexpensive set-up. The guy at the source doubted that 2 would work but it does and very well.
"Crispy, crispy, crispy, crispy"!, there has to be another word to describe clean audio, or maybe just "crisp" like many audio professionals use. Love your videos, but "crispy" has been driven into the ground on this channel. Break it up with "clear, undistorted, accurate etc. Same with visuals, instead of "crispy", go for "sharp, accurate, great acuity or definition". Crispy, crispy, crispy...

I am looking to use an external microphone with a gimbal. What do you suggest?
I’ve used the Shure mic for two years and have mostly great things to say. Portable and easy to use (used it to vlog in 7 countries this summer, no problem). But I have had several issues with functionality - I’ve shot videos only to discover the mic didn’t recorder any audio at all. Super frustrating, but who’s to say if that’s the mic or the phone itself. 🤷🏻♀️ And lately it’s had some static and feedback issues (that I think are from picking up waves or surrounding cell signals - doesn’t seem to happen if I shoot in airplane mode).
Destiny Guerra great feedback - which shire mic are you talking about?
The Mv88 👍🏼 Everything you said about the pros is 100% true. And it’s still the only mic I use, just wish I didn’t dread hitting that play button every time after recording and waiting to see if it just failed to record the best take of a song or 20 minutes of content.

Could be app and memory related.
Sound recordings often stop if memorystorage is limited even though still not full, so empty apps and pictures you don’t need for the moment and maybe you’ll be happier with recordings.
My findings on iOS and good apps (but not MV-88).
Destiny Guerra turn on Airplane Mode, turn off WIFI
Thank you for your videos! It's much easier to choose the right product.
So I just ordered the whole set up you recommended using your amazon links. Thank you for the content. Just about to start streaming on my other larger platforms and wanted to up my game. Thanks again!
I don't see the amazon links??
Lynne Baum, ERYT
The links are in the description box of the video

Does Shure MV88 and Rode VideoMic Me-L working well with FilmicPro or ProMovie?
I think so
They all sound tinny and like crap, except the Shure Mv88 directly as a podcast mic!
Thank you for this video. What is your advice for an Iphone 8 Plus?
SOUND quality is so IMPORTANT! when it comes to RUclips :) Keep creating #wearecreators
thank you sir! MV 88 it is for me ;)
Thank you so much for taking the time in doing this microphone review. I just started my RUclips and Instagram channel. This information will be very valuable to me and going forward.
MV88 is the one I chose, it sounded the best of all to me plus seemed very IPhone XR friendly. Thanks for this review.
Thanks Sean for your great tips as always! Based on your recommendation here and some additional study, I have purchased the "Rode VideoMic Me-L Directional Microphone for iOS Devices" and used your affiliate code. Thanks very much! - Dane
This was so helpful bridging the generation gap between my old stuff and current. Great to know i can use my zoom recorders thru usb also.
I can’t comprehend how anyone can dislike your video! You’re honestly my favorite “RUclipsr.”
This video saved me so much time! Thank you!
Amazing video. Answered all my questions
Much better the white background his ended.

If I’m recording loud amplified sound, what should I be using?
Thanks Sean, we just ordered the RODE Me-L off the back of this video. Thanks for the recommendation! Cant wait to use it on our Tutorial videos!

Check out he zoom h4n for the models higher models that offer more inputs!
Mark Owen-Ward Thank you Mark!
Think Media Thank you!
Ahhh! Handy. Yes - for sure if I whip out my phone to do clips to incorporate in my vlogs there is a definite discrepancy in the audio quality compared to the proper camera clips. It's good to know there are some solutions out there!
Perfectt reviews and just what I wanted thanks - in the market for a new mic after 6 videos for my new channel.
Cool Stuffs, I need one of those :)
No difference that I can hear for the first microphone.
Why didn't you show us the sucky vs good audio in your echo-ey loft?
"Crispy, crispy, crispy, crispy"!, there has to be another word to describe clean audio, or maybe just "crisp" like many audio professionals use. Love your videos, but "crispy" has been driven into the ground on this channel. Break it up with "clear, undistorted, accurate etc. Same with visuals, instead of "crispy", go for "sharp, accurate, great acuity or definition". Crispy, crispy, crispy...
