@@roastme2079 You're not wrong, I too believe in getting the best you can possibly afford... well, up to the point where the benefits are noticeable over the alternatives at least.

Incredible video! I used to use Rode shotgun mics for vlogging. But I changed to a wireless lav mic and never looked back! Bonus benefit is no one thinks I’m some local news reporter. For some reason that’s what people think when they see a shotgun mic with a deadcat/windshield.
The controversy remains - when a budding police state routinely arrests photographers and photojournalists alike for recording in public. The courts have a strong consensus with the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit that "held that a private citizen has the right to record video and audio of [officials] carrying out their duties in a public place, and that the arrest of the citizen for a wiretapping violation violated his First and Fourth Amendment rights". Glik v. Cunniffe, 655 F.3d 78 (1st Cir. 2011). As a photojournalist the mic flag (or logo cube) just might save you a busted head or worse. Many of my 'independent' journalist associates can attest to spending a night or two in torture cuffs from malicious prosecution - only to have all charges dropped for lack of standing. Supporting a often abused cop idiom, "You may beat the rap, but not the rid". Many journalists reporting it can take several months or even years to get recording equipment back from unlawful arrests and illegal detainment. Chilling of free press and free speech has unfortunately become common everyday interactions with police. ‘We lock up a higher percentage of our people than any other nation on earth’. - Chase Madar, professor of law at NYU.
As a professional sound mixer/recordist for the past 30 years, I had to watch your video. And, for the most part, you got a lot of it correct. There are a few nuisances that I could argue, but for the beginner who thinks audio is a mystery, your video works. I recently bought myself a Canon R7 for a video project that I will be shooting (you don't spend 30 years working in video production and not learn a few things from the other departments). So when it came time to outfit the camera with an audio kit, I only pulled a couple things from my Sound Devices/Lectrosonics/Sanken/Schoeps/Sennheiser based pro kit. That stuff is all amazing and top of the line, very expensive audio recording gear. It has been developed for use in my audio bag and a majority of it is either too big to be used around the small camera kit I was putting together or it couldn't be powered by the camera without adding all sorts of extra parts. Yeah, I could have adapted either my Schoeps CMC6/41 or even my Sanken CS-1e boom mics to be on top of the camera, but there are several cheaper, smaller and lighter options. The one I chose to go with is the Rode VideoMic NTG. Its based off of the broadcast line of Rode NTG mics, but in a smaller format with internal power. I was hoping that Rode had built into this mic some of the same quality that they have put into their bigger NTG line up of mics. And I was very pleasantly surprised with the overall quality of this small shotgun mic. It also has the more directional polar pattern that I was looking for. Many of these mics that "look" like a shotgun mic are in fact stereo mics. And that's not what I was looking for, I wanted a mic that had a bit more reach. The Rode VideoMic NTG is a bit more expensive that the other Rode options at $249, but I think its the best in this class of mics. I'm pairing that with the Rode VideoMic GO II as a wireless system. They are an excellent small and relatively cheap wireless system. Just add in a couple lav mics taken from my Sennheiser G3 and G4 kits and they are good to go. The sound they produce is shockingly good. I 'm not gonna replace my Lectrosonics systems with them, but they offer something that those $5000 systems cant offer, a very small size and almost zero weight penalty. And then my deep backup with be a Tentacle Sync Track E recorder. Its a super small and very simple audio recorder that you can feed time code to so that it will be sync'd to a camera or other recorder. There are no external buttons on the small case other than the on/off button. There is not setting the levels of the recorder either as it uses the 32bit floating point format. Take a look at these recorders, amazing systems for when you're out of reach of a regular wireless system or can't bring the whole audio bag. the problem is, they are not cheap. At about $460 for a single unit, they aren't on a lot of non-professional's lists. But compared to a Lectrosonics PDR, they suddenly seem very reasonable. Take look at them on Amazon. They are German made. And from a really great company.
Good stuff. One note (I'm an electronics tech/systems engineer): A preamp is more closely related to a filter than anything else. What it does is knock off irregular noise, then passing a clean signal to an amplifier, which actually does the amplification as the name suggests. So while you're correct about the better quality preamp, the reason is slightly incorrect. Amplification done later is subject to the same things that the preamp is; cheap electronics tend to produce their own noise and don't discriminate well (amplifiers don't usually discriminate at all, or very, very little). So when you pair a cheap, noisy preamp with a cheap amplifier, well, you're just amplifying noise, and no one wants that.
i started with an On-Camera shotgun mic for my mirrorless camera but now I'm picking up the dji wireless lav mic to go with it to get more "personal" Audio. really appreciate the knowledge you're dropping here. Subbed!

I saw this and was like I'm not sitting through a 20 minute video about microphones, but I was gladly wrong. Thanks for teaching me so I didn't waste more time watching additional videos !!
Great information! I watch RUclips videos on my computer through Fostex & Yamaha studio monitors, so I get a pretty accurate representation of the creator's audio quality. As for listening to voice, the kind or price of the mic almost doesn't matter if it's not EQ'd properly, or if the particular mic and preamp don't supply the frequencies needed for clear human voice. I find that a lot of sophisticated creators (as seen here) allow frequencies (below 150 Hz) that sound boomy and muffled. There's little sibilance (just over 5k Hz) and not enough crispiness (around 800 Hz).
In my opinjon, the Sennheiser MKE 600 is probably your best bang for buck when it comes to "advanced" shotgun mics. It's $329 with all the accessories included. And it sounds nearly as good as some other shotgun mics in the $1000 range.
That sensitivity polar pattern isn't given by the capsule but its long tube with lots of slots. "Proximity effect" (deep sounds louder when microphone is close to mouth) isn't given by condenser/dynamic, it is given again by the sensitivity pattern.
I got the _awareness_ from your advertising campaigns, this video has pushed me down the *sales funnel* to _desire_ which is one step away from _action_ to buy...
I've read from other sources that the "shotgun" polar pattern is referred to as "lobar" polar pattern. I would lean towards the latter term since shotgun mics are type of microphones and are not really defined by their polar pattern.
Thanks. You have clearly shown me that I would like an advanced shotgun mic, but shouldn't spend that kind of money. I'm going to go with a dynamic, as I live next to a busy street.
I've spent the whole day learning about mics and sound recording for my upcoming film project - and the whole shotgun/supercardiod thing was so confusing! Thanks for clearing that up (and a lot of other tips)!
great video! but couldnt you just attach the pop lav mic directly to your smartphone instead of using the recorder (cause both the pop mic and the phone have TRRS cable)?
Wow you made mics super easy to understand. I watched a couple other videos on mics before yours and was starting to feel really overwhelmed with all of the options and my lack of understanding of them. after watching your video, I feel like I have a good understanding of mics and can make my decision on which I need. THANK YOU! My search for mics ended here!
I came across and now use a microphone that does 2 things, stereo and/or directional. It is the Azden SMX-30V ( I have no connection with the makers). I can use the stereo or directional via a dial on the back or anything in between. This saves me carrying and swapping microphone over, an added bonus is the audio lead is detachable, not fixed into the microphone. This means I don't have to worry about cable damage or distance if wanting to use it close to a subject yet shoot from a distance via a longer audio lead. I did consider another well Known make but rejected it for several reasons, one being cost and another power source. It is not one of those small tinny sound types but the larger (what is that on your camcorder) types that gets noticed. I recently took it the Norway- Fareo isles and Iceland which can be found elewhere. well worth at least checking this microphone out
Boy, if not the best, then one the best comprehensive, videos on this subject. Thank you so much, I’m in the market for a mic, your videos had helped me understand and make a better choice. Thanks.
Very good, I am videoing some cooking, equipment that they use is very loud and as I am using an iPhone sometimes what I am pointing at is not what I want to hear, on the other hand the presenter moves around a lot so I think that the only choice is a lavalier microphone but it needs to be able to cancel out other kitchen noises. So many to choose from
I am a videographer who shoots slightly different material. I shoot live theatre, concerts, and dance shows. Of course I use an audio recorder to record the audio from the house mixer. I also need a microphone to record close to the stage. I use a stereo condenser mic (Rode NT4) and an audio recorder with analogue limiters (Sound Devices MixPre 3) to deal with unpredictable variations in audio levels. Each of my cameras (3 or 4) have an attached shotgun mic. This is to make the synchronization of audio and they also serve as an audio back up.
"Of course I use an audio recorder to record the audio from the house mixer" Do you have any tips for folks doing the same thing that don't have that option? I regularly film in 2 theaters and do not get that option for either
This video was incredibly helpful because I was looking for exactly the same a tone of questions, now solved, very nicely explained, thank you so much. 🥰
If I understand correctly, all the proposed solutions in this video record audio in mono. What about recording stereo / spatial audio? Excellent video, thank you for the info.
I own a Sony a7siii camera and like to do aviation videos. I have the visual reach but would like to get closer to sound (better reach) to the sound of planes ✈️ and cancel out all the wind and background noise! What 🎤 would you recommend? Thanks 😊 great channel!! 👍🏼 just subscribed
The most detailed video on microphone. Loved the dedication to let people know what they are going to want even though it may sound too technical. Keep up the good work.
I get that this is about film making specifically, but there is a big use case missing - games (Discord) and working (Teams). I sit kinda like a RUclipsr in one place, but at the same time I don't want the microphone to get in my way. I don't care that much that it will be in frame of a video call, but I hate the idea that it will be somewhere near me and will take up space. So I would like something to put on an arm length, for example next to a monitor. I'm thinking about getting small shoutgun mic that is designed primary for use with cameras, but I'm not fully convinced yet. I was thinking about Rode Videomic Go 2, but I've heard that they pickup static electricity and this is a bit a deal breaker. I was also thinking about Deity V-MIC D4, but I don't want to use batteries as it will be stationary on the desk and this idea sounds absurd. I can even go for a XLR mic with some interface, but I know nothing about mics, and even less about interfaces. Overall I can spend like $200.
Soooo we're just going to focus on recording voices and ignore that recording audio/music is a thing? Neat :') What about the mics on the handheld recorders? How do they fare? Better than in-camera I presume? What about the ability to change the polarity on some of those recorders? Why do some of them have cages around the mic? Stereo vs. Mono? What do you need to look out for when recording loud sounds e.g. music? How to capture bass well?
This is a great intro to recording audio for content creators! Thanks for making it clear what situations lend themselves to which microphones. As you said, there are so many choices, it is hard to know where to look. I do have a very particular use case, for which I have been seeking an answer for a while now, and I am hoping you might have some insights. I have been recording my child at his piano recitals for many years now, and am usually situated a few rows back in the audience. I cannot really set up any boom mics or place a field recorder close to the audio source. In this case how would you suggest that I optimize the audio quality, bearing in mind the the limitations involved. Keep up the great work!
You could attach a lav mic to your child on stage and just have the recorder sit in their pocket. After the fact you would just need to synchronize the audio from your camera to the audio from the recorder and it will sound great!
If I may jump in, the answer would depend a lot on what your focus is and what the scenario exactly is, if they have a sound setup to get the piano sound to the audience by way of speakers, you could ask to plug into it. If using a directional is out of the question, the second best is probably Paul's suggestion, or possibly have your child place a recorder on/near the piano which might give better results than a lav mic as recorders often have very good mics, Zoom for example with H1n is the step in to the type I mean. I'm just saying this because most lav mics have a speech optimized design and will color the piano sound a bit, which a recorder typically won't do, most having built in mics for general wide band use, not speech. The difference isn't huge in most cases, a lot of lav mics can do music too.
Dude! What a phenomenal video with everything you need to know. The only item I would have mentioned would be the lag you will notice with the less expensive wireless microphones i.e. stay away from them. Thank you.
Thanks for this easy to understand video. I’m new to video recording a long time photographer and I only videotaped sporting events for my grandchildren. I’m still not sure which microphone to use when filming a football game. I want to hear them call the plays but don’t want to hear the people talking around me. Any suggestions about a long range mic for sports?
Ive been having trouble with my sound quality, just starting out and this video is great. I will look into that course now. Love you so much and thanks for the info!
That was the best, most informational video on Microphones I have ever seen. So much information while still being concise and to the point! Quick Question: Does anyone on here know of a way to use two DJI or RODE mic setups with one camera/smartphone? I love the wireless mic setup, but I need to find a way to record 4 people that will be out on a golf course! Again, super awesome video!
Dynamic microphones are mostly for live performances like concerts, and for classical condensers, you need to be too close and are not suited for anything else than sitting in front of them. LAV has horrible sound quality, and that only leaves one. Shotgun microphones! The best one I have found from my research was the Sennheiser MK 600, when it comes to sound. It wins pretty much everything below 900 dollars, hands down. When you include it's short, has its phantom power and works on a replaceable battery, can directly be plugged into a computer with a simple converter, has a rock-solid build, it is 10+ years old (time tested), has an outstanding noise reduction for just 300$. Miles away from it's competition. (Correct me if I am wrong.)
I shoot live theatre, concerts and dance shows. I have on camera shotguns to capture scratch audio (for post production sync). On the edge of the stage I have a stereo condenser mic, the Rode NT4 hooked up to a Sound Devices Mix Pre 3. I also record from the house mixer with a Tascam DR 60. When it comes to audio, I believe, redundancy is your friend.
Thank you so much! I've joined a band and we play in pretty loud situations. I want to start recording our shows (i plan on leaving the camera in one spot cause i dont have anyone who can record for me) but my built in microphone on my nikon d3500 is not cutting it (for reasons you already stated). This info is so great in helping me figure out what is going to be most helpful for my situation! Btw, any tips and tricks from anyone who has been in this situation and has the know how, I'd so appreciate it!
one can spend months and cash trying to learn all about mics on your own, or you could just watch this video and have all the info condensed, thanks for this!

Great video. Any tips/tutorials for getting rid of that wind you picked up in post? Often have this problem or the persons clothes scratching the Lav mic.
Cleaning up audio is not an easy task, without getting too complex, I usually use the repair tools in the essential sound panel of premiere pro. That gets it to the good enough threshold for most videos
Great video! Thanks for the tips. So well explained and detailed enough, without being too confusing. I've been a musician for many years and am just getting more serious with video creation. I'd love to hear a direct comparison with a Rode NT mic and the Rode wirelss lav mic. I'm currently tossing up between the Rode NTG4 mic and the DJI wireless lav mic. Both would be ideal. The old budget is blowing out. Lol. I do agree with your sentiments though. RUclips vids are best when you can't see the mic. I don't know why more creators aren't switching to out of shot mics. Looks way more professional. I may sign up to your course also. Keep 'em coming. All the best from Australia!
honestly it really comes down to your subject matter and convenience. do you mind seeing lab mics clipped to someones shirt? if its an interview, surely not. thats common. for a film? of course you dont want to see a mic, thats a party foul. are you recording live music? youll want something with a limiter for sure. for convenience, plugging a mic directly into your camera is a time saver as opposed to trying to sync it all up later (nightmare unless youre using 'resolve' or a package that can automatically sync waveforms).
@@flipnap2112 Cheers for the reply. I settled for the DJI wireless system. I'm more than happy with it. Record directly to the camera and also great for recording with the phone. Sound quality is pretty good. Hard to beat. I guess there will never be one mic for all jobs.

I love how on top of the great tutorial he linked the mentioned equipment in the bio. So helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
These are the best comments to read, thanks so much and glad it helped!
I recently took it the Norway- Fareo isles and Iceland which can be found elewhere.
well worth at least checking this microphone out
💪🏻🔥
SUPERRRRRR HELPFUL!! Thank you so much for such a thorough video.
Boy, if not the best, then one the best comprehensive, videos on this subject. Thank you so much, I’m in the market for a mic, your videos had helped me understand and make a better choice. Thanks.
I'm in the process of buying a microphone and this video has helped so much, clear, detailed and to the point, so thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
So many to choose from
One of the best intros I've ever seen
This guy is the goat when it comes to all inclusive guides
Hahaha thank you!
This is such a detailed and comprehensive review. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Nice 💪🏻🔥
"Of course I use an audio recorder to record the audio from the house mixer"
Do you have any tips for folks doing the same thing that don't have that option? I regularly film in 2 theaters and do not get that option for either
What an amazing video, everything is perfect. The video quality, the sound, the editing, the animation, the intro, the hook.
Thank you!
This video was incredibly helpful because I was looking for exactly the same a tone of questions, now solved, very nicely explained, thank you so much. 🥰
Glad it was helpful!
If I understand correctly, all the proposed solutions in this video record audio in mono. What about recording stereo / spatial audio? Excellent video, thank you for the info.
This was awesome. We use mics for a variety of reasons, so this was a good video to watch.
Only 5 minutes in, but this is already one of the most helpful videos I've seen on microphones. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I appreciate that!
This content is amazing, brilliant delivery too, thanks!
That was fantastic! The best overview I've come across with every question I could possibly have (e.g.what's a preamp?) answered. Thank you sir.
Love to hear this!
This is the BEST video I've seen on mics. Thank you!! 😁
Glad you enjoyed it!
Overall I can spend like $200.
the way this video helped me is crazy. Deep thanks man…
Glad to hear it!
Very helpful video, I didn't know all those types and differences. You helped make sense of it all.
Man your clear, descriptive review worth gold! Thank you for the education, you saved me a lot of time!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank for this informative video. I opted for the Pop Voice Pro Lav Mic :) can't wait to try it
This is a great intro to recording audio for content creators!
Thank you.
Thanks, man! and Interesting I've actually never noticed that myself, but will definitely keep it on the radar moving forward!
Good and concise explanation, I feel like someone of any level of technical experience would understand the way you explained.
Appreciate your feedback. Looking forward to your success 🔥
I wish I just watched this before the 300 other 5 minute ones that don’t explain why!! Super helpful thanks
You're welcome!
Best video on audio that I’ve found in RUclips
I bought the Lav mic with the Zoom H1N🙌
It's working pretty well!!
Good to hear!
YOU ARE MY FAV ! this was incredibly helpful, thank you for sharing
You’re very welcome!!
Ive been having trouble with my sound quality, just starting out and this video is great. I will look into that course now. Love you so much and thanks for the info!
Great to hear!
The best sound video ever. Thanks.
Extremely helpful! Tones of information in very well created video. Thank you very much for this high quality content
Glad you enjoyed it!
Will you tell us someday the “focus” thing?
Not sure I know what you’re asking, which focus thing?
@@MrPaulXavier well, you’ve a tattoo with that word and I found it also on the wall behind you. I’m curious
Ohhh I see! It is my favorite word. I think with focus people can achieve anything. So I have it tattooed on my wrist as a constant reminder.
@@MrPaulXavier Thank you for the information, beautiful man. I guess focus is important
Well done, cant really be better. 14 day filmmaker with you running it would be good. I don't need it yet, but when its time ill look you up
Dynamic microphones are mostly for live performances like concerts, and for classical condensers, you need to be too close and are not suited for anything else than sitting in front of them.
Extremely helpful and well edited. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome. I knew barely anything about mics. Now i know enough to get started! Thank you
Great to hear!
This was everything I needed. Thank you!
Absolutely!
This is like super clear and simple to understand. Good work in making this! Cheers!
One backup mic recording at a much lower gain level is the best tip I can give :)
one can spend months and cash trying to learn all about mics on your own, or you could just watch this video and have all the info condensed, thanks for this!
This is my favorite explanation of patterns! Great video overall
Awesome! Thank you!
awesome video on the topic, I think the H4n and NTG3 is a fantastic combo.
It really is!
Brilliant video. I learned a lot, thank you❤️
Glad it was helpful!
Great basic info! Good commercial product.
Hi brother assaali from Kenya Mombasa Africa I'm watching your RUclips channel again again again again I because I am learning so much things from your videos always pray for you God bless you
I was just about to buy a new microphone. This video couldn't have came at a better time. Thank you so much for continuing to aid me in my growth.
Love to hear this :)
Like ❤ one of the most informative videos I’ve ever seen on RUclips
Your intro song is my outro song 😂 I haven't seen anyone else use it, so I'm super excited you have it too! Haha. Also this is just the video I needed to step up my audio-game, so thank you.
Very nice informative video about microphones… thank you
Top value content for a newbie like me. I've decoded to get a Boya By M1 lav and Sennheiser profile condenser in addition to my Sony ECM1-M1 (which is ace by the way). Thanks so much.
Thank god i found this video... It made my 3 day research easy
Omg! Finally, a video that properly explains how mics work, the common types, with a summarized suggestion at the end. Thanks so much.

Cheers for the reply. I settled for the DJI wireless system. I'm more than happy with it. Record directly to the camera and also great for recording with the phone. Sound quality is pretty good. Hard to beat. I guess there will never be one mic for all jobs.
This video answers all my questions about microphone. Thank you❤
Brilliant video! What type of mic would you recommend for wildlife film making?
This is GOLD! Thanks for making it. Much love
Glad you enjoyed it!
