A long shotgun mic is not right for indoors shooting. If you either don't want to use a lavalier mic or have some huge vocal mic hanging in front of your face 2-4 inches from your mouth in-picture, a pencil mic is the right choice as it's much more limited to what it picks up from your surroundings and much less prone to room reverb causing boominess on the recording from too many bare surfaces. If you use a regular shotgun mic like this, you have to go the great lengths to sound poof your environment and most people just don't wanna have to do that, unless they have a dedicated room for just recording and many bed- or livingroom RUclipsrs just don't. For them, pencil mic all the way.
I use a camcorder to capture videos of trains. I stand between 20 feet and 100 feet away. From what I can tell, I should use a cardioid microphone because I don't want to capture audio behind the camera. Can you suggest any and since I use it outside, deadcat as well please? Thanks
I was using a lavalier microphone. Cell phone on my camera. I shot around 90 - 100 videos and then the microphone started making noise and I couldn't use it. This happened either after the microphone software update or the mobile phone software update. Because I changed the microphones to new ones under warranty, there was still the same problem. First, I bought the rode wireless go 1, it made a terrible low noise, so I put it aside before I could use it. Then I bought Rode Wireless Go 2 and installed Rode Lavaliver Go microphones on it and used it. I can't use it now. By the way, the internal microphone of the rode wireless go 2 microphones picks up sound very poorly. Even the phone's internal microphone surpasses them. For this reason, it is necessary to use lavaliver go. Then, instead of buying Rode Wireless Pro, I went and bought the Rode NT USB + model to improve my sound quality. By the way, I use my microphones with the type c port. In the future, I plan to switch to a 32 bit microphone.
Thank you for your response. So far Rode and DJI have been recommended. I am curious if you used them for dancing and moving around and if you used them outside or inside. Also, I hope you have a good camera store in your town. The store in my town allowed me to purchase two different mics to try and allowed me to return them within two weeks. They also allow you to rent them to try as well.... Could save some money.
The problem I have is hearing the breath intakes. I never paid attention to it until I’ve noticed it in my own videos and now I feel cursed because whenever I watch any video on RUclips it’s all I focus on now. Like your video right now… Is it something I should ignore and not let get to me or is that a big deal to people and if you yourself have struggled with this did you lower the gain on those breath intakes in post or did you just leave it? I ask because I want to know if I’m just special and should even worry about that or not. Do people even care hearing that?
I record my videos and send them to and editor. What camera would you recommend for someone who doesn't have a ton of experience but want's a great microphone and is easy to send to an editor ?
Great video, Mark. I find it funny when creators say audio is 50% or more of your video and then turn around and invest in cheap mics. Great content. I have really enjoyed it.
What about using add shotga mic connected to a wireless transmitter to not have to run a cable back to the camera, but still be close to the source.? Would you be losing any audio quality?Doing that?
Well, I'm not Mark, but provided you use a decent wireless system and have a way to power the shotgun mic it should be good, or alternatively Comica VM20 or 30 is a wireless shotgun that has been tested as being quite good. I'm going to pick the Comica up soon I think, from what I've heard it sounds good enough and adds a lot of flexibility since you don't have to either run XLR to the camera or use an external recorder that you have to sync the audio of later. I have a mixpre and a bunch of mics plus zoom f2, but if I can get away with using the Comica boomed close to talent and receiver on the camera I'll take that ease of use over going lav+recorder or boom+recorder and having to sync it in post. I'll take any simplicity I can find heh, probably run a recorder as backup anyway in case the boom thing fails in some way, but if it works it golden.
I am just setting up my channel. This is part of my research. I have tested out (2) different Lava Mics so far. The challenge is trying to mitigate the echo-y sound in the studio. I give a lot of detailed technique instruction so the sound needs to be clean while I speak and demonstrate. So far the DJI has been recommended the most. It is still a little echo-y. I will be able to do a certain amount in post, but I am trying to set up the raw recording to be as close to what I need for RUclips as possible. I you have any better suggestions that would be great.
i would advise on recording a voice over for the instructions, then record the dance separately to use as cutaways. Alternatively, depending on the dance genre, a wireless lavalier microphone would be great (like the Rode Wireless Go). Because of the distance between you and the camera while u're doing ur dance, a shotgun mic on the camera might not be a good idea. Previously for tv-shows, we would just record a Voice over separately. Since that gives us the best audio.
@@jayjay1334 I'm just chiming in to say Ewan is giving good advice, but just adding that dance studios tend to have bad acoustics because a hard wood floor is very reflective, as are large windows that many have. I've spent a fair bit of time in that sort of places, hence my comment. Not very recording friendly because of echo.
Hi Mark. Actually I use an Audio Technica At2020 for my talking head vlog. A friend could give me an old RODE NTG, in your opinion which would sound best for a fixed position, desk blog?
Thank you for your tips! Very insightful. The only thing I can comment is I am not big fan of the mics picking up the breaths between the sentences. Is there a way to avoid it?
Nice video, thank you. What would be the best microphone to record out site ambient sound, like if you were downtown and wanted to records all the sounds of the city?
Good video. So u have a newbie question worth a good mic like these does it plug into your camera still ? If not what does it plug into and how do I bring my audio together. Thanks for the help
It's and XLR mic, so you need an XLR interface (which allows your computer to record the audio) or and XLR recorder. (which records the audio for you) Then you sync the audio file with the video file in editing.
Great video Mike I love using boom microphone. Hi Mike I have questions if you don't mind. Are you using a video switcher for your different angles for your videos? And are you using OBS to capture it. Thank you
@@markwiemels Thank you Mark appreciate the response. I have a switcher but I don't really like using OBS I feel it takes away from the quality of the videos. Just watch a video from Davinci Resolve it also has a multi cam feature
Mark, always enjoy your videos. Since this mic is in the same price range as Rode NTG 5, I was wondering if you have an opinion on which you would prefer.
They are both very good. NTG5 has more low end, and eliminates background noise better, this mic has a bit more clarity and detail. They are both very good mics.
You audio was great! Not every audio reviewer matches this - so I immediately stop listening. I have a Fulaim X5 wireless lav. It sounds very muddy if located mid chest level. Best in front of my mouth. 2nd best is UNDER my T shirt with deadcat, using a magnet.
Mark, alway enjoy your videos. Since this mic is in same price range as Rode NTG 5, I was wondering if you have an opinion on which you would prefer. I understand the Saramonic was sent to you, but wondering how it compares to NTG 5. Thanks so much.
I have the NTG 5 as well, and should have some comparisons in an up coming video. From a quality perspective, I would say they are on par, I think from an Audio perspective it would just come down to personal preference.
Thanks for the quick reply. I look forward to your upcoming comparison video. The Saramonic is priced to compete directly with NTG5, as both are $500 US. Your creative efforts are much appreciated.
I like this one - ruclips.net/video/noSb9xCQVSk/видео.html but it might be above the price point. The MKE-400 is also good. I do like the Rode mics, but sometimes those capsules can't handle the really loud stuff, and you can get distortion.
Very useful - thx you. I am a motorsports RUclipsr (kiwimoto72) and its a hobby that all of a sudden attracted over 50k subscribers. So i need to up my recording game. thankyou! i bought the shotgun mic you recommended.
Hi im just starting my youtube channel I was wondering if its better to have a chest mic and a standing mic out of the shot like u do. I got a cheap usb mic novox nc-1 from my brother but it sounds horrible. Im not sure if its the acoustics of the room, or the placement or if it should sound bad and I should be good at editing😂 what do you think? Should I just improve my editing skills or just throw it to the garbage and get a more expensive mic? I dont know the difference between a cheap and expensive mic so I was afraid that ill buy a new one and it will still sound bad because of sowmthing im missing? 😂 Ive looked everywhere. Please let me know what to do if you may you would bebmy life saver. I just want to start my yt channel and keep on making vids but not spend lots of money for now. 😅
Recently upgraded to a $30 brand new Behringer B-5 and I love it. It's small diaphragm condenser. Sounds fantastic especially for the price.
Great!

Common issue. You can either leave it or use a plug in to remove it. I would not burden yourself and just focus on making good videos right now.
Just use a noise gate. Takes a few seconds.
You can get a de-breath plug-in for pretty cheap. I think the Waves one is $29, and it probably goes on sale fairly regularly.

I learned that a shotgun mic will pick up my keyboard strokes when i stream is that true?
Condenser style mice typically pick up a lot of stuff, from what I read. Check if it’s condenser or dynamic
Why not use zoom as the interface?
Mainly because 32 bit float did not work for in interface mode. They may have updated this via firmware now, not sure.
