  • A question I am often asked is how much do you need to retire or live in Thailand? Well, how long is a piece of string? My answer is, it depends on your budget and what you want to do with your life when you arrive here. I know people who through necessity live on next to nothing and others who live in mansions overlooking the Gulf of Thailand and drive Porches or Mercedes. This video is about what I consider the bare minimum to live a fairly good life in Thailand.

    Hi Ged, just watched your latest video and I think you are absolutely spot-on with your prices and analysis. Great video to watch thank you very much, I have watched a few of your videos in the past. Just moved to Hua Hin from Phuket and absolutely loving it. Staying near soi 80 so as to be close to everything for three months while I have a good look around at where I permanently want to stay, would be great to catch up for a drink sometime and have a chat if you are interested, I'm originally from England moved to Australia in 2005 but now live here and so glad I did it! Once again thanks for the video, take care.

    Hopefully the beginning of June will start my retirement in Bangkok. I've been retired in the US for the last 4 years and blowing through 40,000 plus dollars per year.
    My pension along with some extra Cash from my reserves. Will should see me well in Thailand but I'm aware that I could easily lose my shirt if I'm not careful.
    As you say, it really depends on your specific needs. I'm going to start in Bangkok and I realize that it's probably one of the more expensive places to live, next year. I'll go somewhere cheaper. Like maybe Pattaya. Or Jomtien beach.

    • @thailandmyland...retiringd2351

      No I just go to Google maps and type in the address then take a screenshot on my laptop then save it then transfer it to a USB and take it to a print shop.

      That condo has got to be a downgrade for many, my advice is to not go too basic on accommodation so you might actually enjoy it rather than tolerate it. You probably will break even as you won't go out as much.

I have rented properties paying 50,000 a month and havent been happy living there but I am happy living here and I am having a great life. What suits me might not suit you but everyone is different. Thanks for the advice but I am 72 years old and I have lived in 10 countries and bought and sold property in most of them and still own a house worth close to a million dollars in Australia and two condos in Tampa so forgive me if I choose what suits me to live because if I don't know what I am doing now I will never know.

Jeez you're sensitive typical Western failure escaping to Thailand, Are you one kick away from being confused for a Swiss national? Do you think you will see out your days there or do you think you might move back to the UK or Australia as you get to an age where you might need age care?

    • @thailandmyland...retiringd2351
      @thailandmyland...retiringd2351  6 месяцев назад +2

      Hi Paul. No I definitely wouldn't move back to the UK. It's not the same country that it was and I don't recognise it as my own anymore. If I ever got so sick that I needed ongoing serious medical help then perhaps I would move back to Australia where my family are. I see many older men here who look infirm and sick and some of them pay for a live-in nurse which would be a lot cheaper than paying for a nursing home back in blighty. Having a pretty 30 year old Thai nurse caring for you 24 hours a day is a better option for me. They also have the benefit of the better weather here which makes a big difference compared to the weather in the uk. To be honest the thought of living in a nursing home in England with dozens of other oldies fills me with dread 😂😂😂 so I will hope for continuing good health and see out my days here.
      Cheers

    Hey Ged I have a phone question. I'm currently on my daughters family phone plan. When I get there and buy my AIS sims card and 5G phone plan does my daughters phone plan just get over ridden and no longer in effect. I'm thinking her phone plan goes away and is replaced by the AIS plan. Is that correct? Thanks.

    • @thailandmyland...retiringd2351
      @thailandmyland...retiringd2351  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hi mate. I am not sure how that works as I have never done that. I would imagine that if you take out the sim card from your home countries phone provider and put in the AIS sim card then you would just pay the AIS plan. If you want to keep your home country sim as well so that friends and family can contact you when you are in Thailand then you will have to pay those charges from your home phone provider. Perhaps go into your phone providers shop in your country before you leave and ask what options you have.
      I hope that this helps
      Cheers

      I have a phone with an internal Sim as well as an external. I use Google fi in the states and I can switch between SIM cards on the phone. I also use a secondary phone so that in Thailand my primary phone will stay off and locked up in the safe while my secondary will not have any banking information on it. Just in case I lose the phone, I don't want sensitive information to get out there.
      As long as your daughter is paying for you to be on her plan, you're still on it. However, you need to check about roaming charges. That can be quite expensive. But once you switch over to a different Sim that's the active Sim. On my phone. I can actually have both Sims active. I could choose one for calls and the other for data. You need to look and see what kind of phone you have and what your plan is.

      Once you reach retirement age the costs are high and the premiums rise every year as you get older as you are more at risk of sickness and hospitalisation. The government haven't made it mandatory as yet and hopefully they won't as I don't want to give the medical insurance companies a large wack of my pension every month

      I'm about to turn 66 and I've gotten several estimates from companies in the area. I did not like the premiums. They were very high. I have Medicare in the US that will cover me in Thailand for 3 months for emergency care. Other than that, as far as I'm concerned the $800,000 Thai baht that is in the bank will be my emergency medical fund. If it's really serious then I'll do my best, if it's less serious, I'll get on a plane back to the US. If it's the end of my life then that is what it is. Don't want to be spending good money. Trying to keep dead protoplasm alive.
