A warning about renting ANY place in Bangkok ... electricity is very expensive. VERY. Thailand is very hot and Bangkok doesn't 'cool off' in the evening because of all the concrete that releases heat when the sun goes down. If you're a single male you should NOT be looking for a place over 42sqm because you must AIR-CONDITION it all the time when you are home. I have been in very large apartments and the Thai or Western people who live in these impressively large apartments sit in puddles of sweat because they refuse to run their air-conditioners (electricity = $$$$$). Find a modest place to live, one that is easy to air-condition - you will thank me later.
What's expensive to you? Here in Hawaii my wife and I pay on average $250 per month for electricity and we don't even use an AC in our house at all. We also pay for gas for our stove and our hot water heater and that is about $150 per month as well. So, I'm guessing in Thailand its at least that much if you're talking expensive? BTW my wife and I are retiring to Thailand in a few years, have a conservative budget of $5K per month to live on, so should we be worried about the cost of living in Thailand?
@@BrianSiart Hawaii is America and is expensive. Thailand is SE Asia and will be less expensive for you and your wife provided you don't waste your money BUYING a condo there. My point is that Westerners who think that 'bigger is better' should know that bigger is NOT better when finding an apartment/condo to live in because electricity is very expensive in Thailand (everywhere). Your $5K/month budget should enable you to find a comfortable 15-20K baht/month place to live in Bangkok if that is your destination. You will have a great choice of condos because foolish Westerners buy condos for 'investment,' then they can't find Thais who can afford the rent. Chris is the walking encyclopedia of expat life in Thailand.. he really knows his stuff... and he is spot on... $1000 is a minimum that you can still have a nice life on, it ALL DEPENDS on how much you like to 'Party'! its as simple as that really!! Nightlife/Drinking is the most expensive thing of daily life in Thailand.... fortunately I have outgrown my heavy party days now and am happy just going out for a couple of beers once a week, as I am doing here in Vietnam... It's all about the food for me there so I can imagine I will be quite happy on $1000-1200 a month!
Biggest issue is there's no way to stay there a long term if you're under 50 yo. Visa options are very limited and they are cracking down on those bogus educational and Muay Thai Visas. What i like about Thailand is the easy accessibility to healthy food and saunas in the buildings which the Philippines doesn't have.
Exactly! This video doesn’t even mention the Visa to live there long term. I can afford the appropriate $2k a month, but it’s the long term Visa that’s the issue, since I’m under 50.
@@alinet9937that’s not a realistic way to live in Thailand long term. Eventually an immigration officer will ask why you don’t have a proper long term Visa, which is hard for someone under 50.
There is the elite visa now known as the privileged. If you can afford it, it's really the only way anyone under 50 can live freely in Thailand. Unfortunately, Sept 23' is when it literally doubled in price but it's worth it without the hassle of immigration. I've been saving for 8 years and was almost ready for the move but now it's looking more like 2026 because of the Visa expense.. it's worth it, even if only for 5 years until I can work out something more permanent..
The BNK BKK doctor that did my MRI for a PSA was thai. He spoke Thai, English (Perfectly!) and Mandarin. He spent 15 to 20 minutes explaining everything. The results were delivered via encrypted email (Which I had approved ahead of time so as to avoid a trip to the hospital again as I live in Pattaya) and guess what? The doctor CALLED me to go over the results. He was mellow, confident, happy the results were negative. In America there would be no call, no email, have to get approval from your general doctor before seeing a specialist etc. etc. WHAT SERVICE BKK Hospitals have!
Thinking about moving to Thailand in 2-3 years after retiring. Where can i find more information on healthcare insurance including dental and vision plans? I will need private health insurance for peace of mind because i won't be eligible for Medicare yet and won't return to the US if i need healthcare services. Thank you for these informative videos.
iv have lived in THAILAND FOR 11 YEAR IN NONG KHAI AND TRAVELED IT FOR 41 YEARS I DRINK EVERY DAY I EAT LIKE A KING AND SPEND FOR ME AND MY WIFE FOR $520 A MONTH ,
I lived in small house on Mekong in Issan for $50 a month (2013). Had to put in kitchen & water heater for shower... Large towns in Thailand are extremely load most all of the time.
My husband and I are talking about leaving the US once he retires. Actually he did retire once but got bored after one year and started working again. How difficult is it to learn the Thai language? Are they generally bilingual in both Thai and English? Language barriers, if we do move away, are the biggest concerns that I have.
Canadian Expat here, now married to a Thai Lady. Learning the language is a different experience for each person. I took a 20 hour course and my wife teaches me, along with RUclipsrs. As well we speak Thai at home. So my experience is different than many however when it comes to speaking English it depends on where in Thailand you are. Touristy areas of Bangkok or Pattaya obviously no issue. Small village in Isaan different story.
Thanks for the video, last year, I lived in the Jomtien area close to Pattaya for 6 months and my monthly budget was $3K and that's with companionship with a regular Thai lady for 3x a week and not buying any lady drinks and barfines. Been eating Thai foods in the market not western food. I was planning to retire but changed my mind in the last minute. In my early 50's now and back to work in CA. Will do this again, next year.
Been here 4 years also. Definitely budget friendly you can live here for 1000 a month and be happy. I do 1600 1700 a month and that's cool. Was doing 3000 to 3500 a month, that gets old. Only so much paying and girls. Really 1500 is all included. Not hard to do.
I am in the Philippines now and heading to Thailand next week to see where I want to retire too. I intend to go to Bangkok to have a full medical checkup.
I will be traveling to Thailand in the next couple of weeks. I will stay in Bangkok with my Thai girlfriend. Then I would like to spend a couple of nights on an island. Don’t need to spend a lot of money on a resort but do you have any recommendations?
Can you recommend a town for a retired expat that is looking for a "soft landing" spot to get acclimated with the new environment? I would like to add that my immediate needs would be several different types of nearby budget restaurants that offer a variety of different cusines. I want to feed my face without a lot of hassle. I also don't want to be up north where the burning season is worst. Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
I left bangkok, to busy. In chiang khan area. Alot quieter and plenty of rentals. Single people here, you can get 1 bedroom bathroom no kitchen. 90 dollars a month. Even better places 200 a month

Correct me if I’m wrong, it seems the women there are content with staying rather than looking for that ticket to the U.S. as in som “other” countries.
I hope the issue of cost of living will not change when the tax policy is being reviewed, where a foreigner living in Thailand will be liable to tax. Is there a proper news or developments in this regards?
Chris, you talk about health care BUT you do not tell us what companies are the best for heath insurance for a Canadian guy like me SO what is the best insurance company as anyone would need this there. Regards, Shannon
THATS NICE. But for $2000 per month you can easily live in Portugal, Spain and many other European countries. Plus you get a free healthcare and no problem with the residency status if you are EU member.
@@JohnSkyLey that's not the point. Thailand used to be very affordable but now the cost of living there can be compared to some cheaper European countries. A decade ago the gap in terms of affordability was huge now it's marginal.

Cost of living is obviously important for living in any country, but to live in another country long term you have to have a proper Visa. This video doesn’t even mention that. Getting a proper long term Visa for someone under 50 (like myself) is not easy in Thailand. If it was easy, I would of moved there already! 🤷♂️🤣
What hospitals have you been to? Just in Bangkok? ‘Cause the hospitals in Pattaya suck. Even the doctors barely spoke English and I felt that they were rude. I’m polite and soft spoken. I was having a legitimate medical emergency. They treated me like I was crazy or something and could barely communicate with me.
Thailand is not the place to retire anymore. Great to visit or live and work there, but not for retirees. Starting 1 Jan 2024 Thailand now taxes the income of retired Expats (including Pensions), if you live in Thailand 180 days or more in a year, while all the other countries in SEAsia do not. Hopefully Thailand will change their mind, but as it is now, starting on Jan 2025 Expats have been told to pay income taxes on the money they brought to Thailand from 1 Jan 2024 onwards. Thailand also wants to implement worldwide taxation, so even if you dont remit the money to Thailand they want to tax it . No matter how good their Visas are or the country is - for retired Expats Thailand is not the best option (we are leaving).
Watch out for the new tax regulations for 2024. It looks like they plan to tax any income you bring into the country. This includes Social Security... and don't get me started on the Burning Season...
Let me put living in Thailand in proper perspective. My wife of 30 years is Thai and hasn't even visited for the last 10 years, never mind thinking of returning for our golden years. And we could live like rock stars in Bangkok, but Thailand has opened its doors to all the world's bottom feeders and has become a ghetto for lost old guys (and pathetic young guys in search of themselves) and those who prey on them, the snake oil salesmen ("come on over"). I enjoyed my 2 assignments in the 80s (when single) and 90s (when married) but was happy to leave. This coming from a guy with nearly 45 years of travel to Thailand, and speaks Thai.
Look for videos that tell the gritty truth about living in Thailand. These videos will share that the $2 street meals are unhealthy and not sustainable, cheap rentals are paper thin walls and the upkeep goes away pretty quick, etc.
I wish I could justify breathing the deadly, toxic air pollution, there .. I would love to move there and make it my retired - home base, next yr, But "I'm into my health" .. Wow, it looks so modern since I was last there 30+ years ago. I don’t believe the subway/Skytrain was there. Great video!
Always great content!!
I just booked my trip to Thailand, be there in January :D
Little FYI, the Canadian government seems to be blocking your channel from Canadians. I was subscribed to both channels, now they are gone and I had to use a VPN to find you again.
Please get your head checked. You are a nut with crazy conspiracies.
What i like about Thailand is the easy accessibility to healthy food and saunas in the buildings which the Philippines doesn't have.
you just need to cross boarder and come back...?
@@alinet9937Not a long term solution. Only 180 days allowed in a 12 month period with tourist visa.
Great show Chris! Stay cool 😎 kind and generous.
It's true. In the USA they'll call when you're about to die and ask for you to pay the balance. LOL 🤣(joking not joking).
Not true. We always get phone calls in America 🇺🇸, either from PA or the doctor. And doctors are always explaining things in length
Great video my friend. 👍🏼
Well put together. ❤ We are looking at other options for retirement.
Cheers from 2 Canadians 🇨🇦 living in Mexico.🇲🇽✌🏼
Soo good. Sign me up. Sick of working my ass off . Being rapped here in Australia
Me too, mate. Need to escape Aus once I’ve got the paper.
Thinking about moving to Thailand in 2-3 years after retiring. Where can i find more information on healthcare insurance including dental and vision plans? I will need private health insurance for peace of mind because i won't be eligible for Medicare yet and won't return to the US if i need healthcare services. Thank you for these informative videos.
iv have lived in THAILAND FOR 11 YEAR IN NONG KHAI AND TRAVELED IT FOR 41 YEARS I DRINK EVERY DAY I EAT LIKE A KING AND SPEND FOR ME AND MY WIFE FOR $520 A MONTH ,
American, no insurance, needed an MRI for prostate. Quoted $7800.
MRI for prostate at BNH BKK Hospital? $480.
It's like the trip is free
Did BNH replace their MRI machine? They were still procuring a new one in Nov.
Small village in Isaan different story.
welcoming to Thailand
.
Thai language is virtually impossible for a middle aged westerner to learn.
Nasty bastard. So you only go for sex to Thailand. Sad sad.
amazing video! very superb.
Hi Chris, if dental implant is$1000 dollars per tooth?I will be heading over there next year!
Kosher Soul Food is delicious.
Pork is deadly.
Hola from Mexico. ❤❤❤❤
Been here 4 years also. Definitely budget friendly you can live here for 1000 a month and be happy. I do 1600 1700 a month and that's cool. Was doing 3000 to 3500 a month, that gets old. Only so much paying and girls. Really 1500 is all included. Not hard to do.
Hi there,
coming to thailand solo this February! seeking to possibly move there!
May I make an appt with you to help with real estate options? Thanks!
Great video Jim.
How long will you be staying in Thailand?
Thank you this is an amazing very informavtive video. Is it copper tone welcoming country?
I am in the Philippines now and heading to Thailand next week to see where I want to retire too. I intend to go to Bangkok to have a full medical checkup.
How did you make out? I'm also in Philippines and want to check out Thailand as well. What was your end result?
Hua Hin
I got a house in Asoke for $650 a month and it's clean and 2 stories. It's a great deal.
I left bangkok, to busy. In chiang khan area. Alot quieter and plenty of rentals. Single people here, you can get 1 bedroom bathroom no kitchen. 90 dollars a month. Even better places 200 a month
Can you give a ball park figure of the yearly cost of health insurance. Thank You
Hi Chris! I just subscribed for your channel. I’m planning to get a dental implant when I am in Bangkok. May I have the name of the dental provider that you used? Thanks! Peter
Dental work is no cheaper than in the West.
Penile enlargements are cheap
Implant cost here in Thailand basically starts from around US$ 700 (depends on material brand) while dental cleaning starts from US$30.
Are there some nice, furnished condos for $200 month or less?
Correct me if I’m wrong, it seems the women there are content with staying rather than looking for that ticket to the U.S. as in som “other” countries.
I hope the issue of cost of living will not change when the tax policy is being reviewed, where a foreigner living in Thailand will be liable to tax. Is there a proper news or developments in this regards?
What's wrong with paying tax, we all have to!!
Tax on world wide income, as a retiree? 😅
Would love to live there I need to get out of the UK its getting worse
I live in Kalasin I have a pension of 80000B I live in a house of 270m2 but you can get by on 20000B a month. I have a good life here
Is there a way to live close to everything yet away from the highways?
Chris, you talk about health care BUT you do not tell us what companies are the best for heath insurance for a Canadian guy like me SO what is the best insurance company as anyone would need this there. Regards, Shannon
So what months is the air polluted with the burn season?
what health insurance do you use ??
I need at least 2500 USD per month. I live in Pattaya.. Forget living here on 1000 dollars a month. It's difficult.
Nasty bastard. You only live there for sex.
An implant in Mexico is currently $1500, and it is $5K in 🇺🇸. The cheapest country to have any medical or dental procedure done is Turkey 🇹🇷
Have you ever been to shanthiya koh yai resort?
Where do you recommend getting dental work done?
what area do you recommend i look if i have 1000 a month
I spend 1000 a month on insurance and car payments alone all I know is when I finish with my large purchases like my car payment and house I’m moving
It’s not true that all
Airbnb have electricity included …read that fine print in each case
I plan on retiring with about 9k per month net income. Can I live well in Bangkok
When you do what "x" dollars get you it would be nice if you would go up the scale more than 2K per month.
What are you talking about ?! How do you make a living ?
Love the cross pollination of RUclipsrs! Right On!!!
I'd rent a cheap place and cook my own food or is it cheaper to eat out than using gas or electricity, please? For your cooker
I wonder why they have so many saunas if all you have to do is walk outside?
THATS NICE. But for $2000 per month you can easily live in Portugal, Spain and many other European countries. Plus you get a free healthcare and no problem with the residency status if you are EU member.
Would much rather live in Thailand than any European country
@@JohnSkyLey that's not the point. Thailand used to be very affordable but now the cost of living there can be compared to some cheaper European countries. A decade ago the gap in terms of affordability was huge now it's marginal.
Retired military veteran. I make 6500 per month. I want to live in a home on the beach. Is that possible in Thailand on my budget? Want island life, not city.
I live nearby khao san road , now let me breakdown my budget.
Room : 20000 bhat
Food : 15000 bhat
sightseeing and transportation : 15000 bhat
parties : 15000 bhat , thnx
Too much,for living in Thailand.
Bhat?? Maybe you mean Baht?
@@bengmelea8646 haha yes , sorry that was a spelling error .
u pay 20k baht for only a room? rofl surely you mean an apartment.
65000 / 50000 w/o party bs
Just when you thought it was not possible for yet another Thai cost of living vlog! If you need thst information, you can't afford that lifestyle in the first place.
logic. try some online course.
@@oderblock Extract your head from his ass hole.Real men get on the ground and do their own research. Unless they can't afford that lifestyle of course.
Do you find many American couples moving to Thailand at all?
Lots of Brits, Dutch, Swedes, Germans, French, Aussies, South Africans and single Americans. Not lots of Western couples, unless they are retirement age.
@@FunkyChild718 Thanks for taking the time to answer my question, much appreciated! We love the thought of Thailand and honestly, the lack of other western couples might not be a bad thing seeing how some of us behave these days.
Health insurance is cheap for someone your age is very cheap …but once you hit 60 it’s different
Language barrier continues to be a huge downside. A masive issue if you get into a dispute with a local.
We ask for justice from the USA 🇺🇸 for Dr. Edwin Arrieta and his family. We trust in the Authorities of Thailand Justice 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Less expensive instead of cheap.
How much a month to live there!
800 u.s.dollars for poor, cheap living, but big money for poor Thai.
$2k min
@@cryptocrusader6078 too much
I spend 500 a month, me and my wife, but i'm from Holland🤣🤣
Cost of living is obviously important for living in any country, but to live in another country long term you have to have a proper Visa. This video doesn’t even mention that. Getting a proper long term Visa for someone under 50 (like myself) is not easy in Thailand. If it was easy, I would of moved there already! 🤷♂️🤣
Band-kok???
My budget on Samui is $2800. That's plenty....
I thought you cannot buy real estate in Thailand.
dont they charge 3-4X for healthcare because ur a forienger?
One significant variable is how much alcohol you drink. Alcoholism is expensive, even in Thailand.
bought my ticket need to talked to someone about renting $600 to $700 a month 71 retired income
If you don't drink, don't party and don't have a girlfriend, then 1000 bucks a month would be enough. most of us want more in our retirement.
I'd bet $100 (US) that he uses the term "literally" within the first 15 seconds of this video!
i need 520 dollars per month, 140 meters away from the beach, 120 sqm.
I plan to rent 30 sqfeet bangkok apartment budget 250-350. I will go away in weekends rent a car and live in hotel,😂😂😂
2000 it is much to expensive
What hospitals have you been to? Just in Bangkok? ‘Cause the hospitals in Pattaya suck. Even the doctors barely spoke English and I felt that they were rude. I’m polite and soft spoken. I was having a legitimate medical emergency. They treated me like I was crazy or something and could barely communicate with me.
Next year. Next year.
"nearly 45 years of travel to Thailand, and speaks Thai" That is a lot of traveling to a place you don't like. 🤣😂🤣
Negative much?
$2000/month is pushing close to the cost of living in the US fuck that 🤣
Look for videos that tell the gritty truth about living in Thailand.
Breathing "non deadly air" must factor into "Quality of life" .. Only thing I could fig is pt time, summer mos (better air qual), But "Record Breaking" Heat ..
I lost my adoption papers in a house move, so I'd have to search for my biological parents in the Ibahn
