Hey everyone! We are thinking of making a Q&A Video, so if you have a burning question for us, drop it here in the comments and we will add it to the list. Hope you enjoy this weeks video! :-) Thank you! Neil & Sarah
Hi Neil and Sarah hope you enjoy Bangkok its a fascinating city with so many options of countries surrounding plus in - country travel, if you get a chance Hua Hin is a gorgeous spot south of Bangkok you can get there by train....Hope you get some good earned rest after the long haul to get there....I have a question given you are making your money work for you while you travel what amount that you have budgeted each year comes from your you tube channel? I had never though of doing something like this however even though I have been given the option to take my job with me when I move to Mexico I am not actually sure I want too, or neither do I have to however, would like a wee income maker aside from investments..
Hi Dawn! Thank you for the question, I think we will put this into the Q&A video, so we will hold off the answer to there. Teaser alert.... it's the worst paying work either of us have ever done, including our Paper Rounds when we were 13 years old :-) Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Hi Neil and Sarah, I can imagine a lot of work for a little payback but I have had conflicting feedback on this so I would be interested in your views on your Q&A....Enjoy your day in Bangkok as you explore another dimension of your travel...
My question is " would you go stir crazy or get bored without having the RUclips channel to work on every day ". I begin my year long slow travel journey next February in Thailand actually. I have debated on the idea of a RUclips channel but it seems that " editing videos " is literally torture. Any truth to that? Does RUclips give you a sense of purpose? Did you need a sense of purpose? Is it good that it is interconnected with your travel as opposed to an online job teaching English as a second language or being a copywriter etc ?
The secret is to put money away every paycheck. He says 15% but I think you check out the budget for some extra. Put it into an SP index fund. Do not touch it. Just let it grow. If you are spending 10 hours a week worrying about it now,use that time for a hustle and tuck that away. Trying to work the market is a mugs game. It can be done by a few people but you don’t d sound like one. 10 years from now your index fund in your Roth IRA will be doing great. Or 401k.
Indeed, It has always been tougher to understand how to build your money after retirement and even more so right now with the inflation. You can experience a completely varietied market passively by employing a successful portfolio-advisor.
Even if you're not skilled, it is still possible to hire one. I was a project manager and my personal portfolio of approximately $850k of my retirement pension took a big hit in April last year due to the crash. I quickly got in touch with a financial-planner that devised a defensive strategy to protect my funds and make profit from my portfolio this red season. I've made over $250k since then
Pro tip: If you need to have a credit card (or other sensitive material) mailed to you in a foreign country, have it sent to the local DHL or Mail Boxes Etc. office marked "hold for customer pickup" with your name and phone number. The office will call you when it arrives and you will need to show your passport and tracking number (provided by the sender) to obtain your mail. I've had this done with bank cards, tax forms, real estate documents and remote voting ballots many times with no problems!
@@2GoRoam Be careful, some couriers do not deliver to PO Boxes and the like. I bought a P.O. Box when I first moved to Thailand because of the hit & miss of having things delivered to a Thai home address that was in English. I had some notarized documents shipped over by my Brother and gave him the English version of the address. Two weeks later my Brother called as the package was returned as undeliverable. So I bought the P.O. Box in the main post office in Chiang Mai and gave him that address since it was much easier to understand in English ... when he went to the post office to mail it they told him they can not courier packages to a P.O. Box (I think they can deliver via regular mail which can take a month or more.) So I sent him a photo of the Thai address written in Thai and asked him to glue it to the package ... that arrived in about a week. Thailand Internet: You're in heaven for Internet while your staying in Thailand. Cheap, very fast, and reliable (living outside of Chiang Mai, which is way up North and in the jungle mountains more or less, and I pay about 1600 Baht ($46USD) for 1GB/500Mb home fiber Internet, Television service over fiber, and an unlimited cellphone service with unlimited data rated for 6Mbs, but it's 5G and I easily get 20Mbs and sometimes up to 60Mbs ... I really don't need that level so if I wanted to use a 200Mbs home service and cellphone service rated at 2bs I could probably have that and the Television service for less than $20 USD. 57% cost difference ... I'm find that hard to believe, although my comparison is between Toronto, Canada and Chiang Mai Thailand. * Rent went from $2000 cad per month for a small 2 bedroom apartment to about $375 cad per month (my Thai wife already had two homes, one big one in the mountains outside the city, about 1 hour drive, and a smaller one in the city, she sold the big one and build a bigger house, 2 bedrooms and 2 baths, about a 15 minute drive to downtown Chiang Mai. *Food for 2 went from $800 /mth to $400/mth (and this is eating out most days in Thailand, vs grocery shopping every weekend and only eatingout once a week when we went grocery shopping.) * gas costs about the same but Thialand is not spread as much as cities in Canada, so usually my cost is about 1/2, so instead of $60 per fillup every 2 weeks, it's about $30 per fill up every 2 weeks. * Internet is about 1/2 the price for 5 times the speed (plus I get cell phone and TV included which saves about $100/mth and I get better service included.) ... * Utilities are cheap I believe but it's hard to tell as water, electricity and property tax are all part of the rent where here I have to pay for water (~$5/mth) electricity (averages about $60/mth and I use AC when I feel like it, which is a lot for at least 6 months of the year) garbage 20 baht / month (or around $0.75 cad) and property taxes are $0 (any property under 1 rai (about 1/2 an acre) has not property taxes (my wife has about 10 rais around the province and she paid some redlicious tax of maybe $15 for the year, which to be fair was about 1/2 the usual cost because of a Covid discount.) So my monthly expenses went from probably $3,100 cad (just basic rent, utilities, food & transportation) to about $890 (if I were still renting the 2 bedroom 2 bathroom house I rented when I first moved here!) Since we bought a new home (about $70K cad all in after furniture and upgrades like solar yard lights, higher fencing, security cameras, sheds, landscaping) and car outright with no loans, our actual expenses are closer to $500 cad/mth ... the only thing missing right now is health insurance (have to look into that soon, but for the most part, besides emergencies, health care out of pocket is pretty cheap here ... Canada it used to be 'free', so I'm guessing that's going to cost another $300 to $400 per month when I decide to get it ... so that will bring it back to around the $800 to $900 mark again. That means I am paying about 30% of what I paid in Canada ... If I stayed in Canada I could live like a hermit in a small bachelors apartment and seldom if ever going out, staying home and getting all my entertainment from whatever Interent I could afford ... in Thialand I have a home, lots of money left over after my bills are paid, and can afford to go on a week or so vacation pretty much anywhere in South East Asia every month! It's not for everyone (language, culture, weather, etc) and there are requirements you need to meet to get the proper long term visa, but it's not too onerous for most western Boomers who have worked all their lives and have at least a little bit of savings (if you qualify for the full Canada Pension and OAS, and can scrap up 800,000 Baht to hold in a Thai bank account (~$30,000 cad or you can forgo the 800,000 baht if you can show you have a pension with which you can transfer $2400 cad into Thailand every month) and can control your drinking and womanizing, you are pretty much all set to live a comfortable life (or in my case, since I am already married to a Thai national, 400,000 baht in a Thai bank, or a pension income of 40,000 baht ($1500 cad) per month)
@@RetiredInThailand Now that is some great comprehensive information! Very informative. I can't help but say, what you're living on now, that's about what we live on in rural USA. We're retired, and live simply, but not hurting for anything. Plus, we have a rural/farm lifestyle complete with rolling fields and woods, buildings, animals, agriculture, and lots of outdoor time. We couldn't do city life, nor apartment life. Cheers!
@@elgringoec yeah, if after the death of my first wife I had not had decided to move to Thailand I would have tried to the place of my birth, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, ready coast of Canada where the cost of living would have been near the same (my first wife was Thai with her family originally from Chiang Mai area and always said she'd like for us to retire there when the time was right, so I decided I would try and honor that plan and went there for a month in March 2020, which because of covid lockdown lasted till December, giving me lots of time to realize I loved the place and could retire there no problem.)
One thing that sucks about traveling for so long (I’ve been doing it since 2006), is that you disassociate yourself from family and friends. You miss out on weddings, births, birthdays, graduations, holidays, etc… eventually people forgot about you in an intimate way.
That is true. I've only been abroad for about 5 years but I had the convenience for the first few years of flying back and forth two to four times a year to my hometown and family. Then Covid hit, and it was 540 days before I had my first trip back. But one has to consider when they do this, are you living your life for those birthdays, graduations and holidays or are you living it for yourself to what you want to enjoy. The one thing that keeps my connection with my family is Facebook. They post about all their parties, graduations and all that other stuff that's happening in their lives, I can share in it like I'm there, and I post things of my journeys so they can share in it also.
NOT necessarily. A lot of my family are people who NEVER travelled, broadened their horizons, speak other languages etc. They quite frankly bore me to say the least. They do all the conventional things though but are slow in many ways. Before the pandemic I slow travelled a lot and family or friends never knew where I would be next. During pandemic I became available by phone and I felt captive. Also I realized some relationships, family or otherwise were inauthentic and just placeholders or habits. I'm saving and hitting the road next spring.
You don't have to miss out on weddings, births, graduations, etc. You schedule your travel around those. We sold our house 2 1/2 years ago. We go "home" for the holidays. We go see our youngest son who is stationed in California. We are in Hawaii right now because our first grandbaby is being born here within the next week. We wouldn't be in Hawaii for a few months if we still were paying on a house.
Whenever I have a haircut I like I have pictures taken of myself with selfies and by others. Then I always show the next stylist what I want on my iPhone. Works every time. Even with English speakers it’s what you should do.
Hi you both remind me of when I did this at 50, I travelled the World for 2 years. We live in Rayong if your in the area we can have lunch. I met a couple that had been travelling for 17 years I learnt a lot from these people, I travelled all around Europe for free accommodation and food for working a few hrs a day. House sitting in Orvieto Italy. I think we could have a interesting chat if you have the time. If not then best wishes. Les & Ploy
Thank you for sharing your EXCELLENT videos. I started traveling from age 20-73, and now at 79, I have retired to Queretaro, Mexico, because USA became too deadly and expensive. Stay blessed and safe always. It is nice to be nice.
@@deniselumsden6738 "The most in the world" You must be joking. The US has 6.3 people killed by gun violence per every 100,000 people, Mexico has 28.4!
With Roth IRA, the money you are contributing has already been taxed. At any time for any reason, you can withdraw your contributions tax-free and penalty-free. Additionally, any earnings on investments can also be withdrawn tax-free and penalty-free, Not sure how much to contribute, I'm still at a crossroads deciding if to liquidate my $338k stock portfolio.
Consider buying stocks when the economy is not doing well, like during a recession. It could be a chance to buy them at a lower price and sell later when prices go up. Just keep in mind, this isn't financial advice, but sometimes it's better than keeping a lot of cash.
Exactly why i enjoy market decisions being guided by a pro , seeing that their entire skillset is built around going long and short at the same time both employing risk management and market experience , been using a portfolio-coach for over 2years+ and I've netted over $3million in that time frame.

It would have been helpful to me if you had titled this video “the real truth about retiring to a life of slow travel” rather than retiring abroad. Retiring abroad means something different to me - it means moving to another country where you intend to stay.
I totally agree... I sold my home and built a home in Ghana, West Africa and couldn't be happier!.. Traveling abroad from the continent of Africa is much cheaper than traveling from the US..and with my home base being in West Africa, I can fly back to the States much or as often as I choose. So technically I have 2 homes, a shared home in the US and my base home in Africa!
Agree - the title and the content are not the same. Watched 1 minute and checked the comments to confirm they really were going to talk about “slow travel” versus retiring abroad.
Can totally relate to the haircut in Turkey - sent hubby off for a trim, he came back about 4hrs later like a new man. They cut and coloured his hair, burnt off the fuzzy ear hair and waxed his nasal hair (who knew there was so much up there, god only knows how that conversation came about) but he just kept smiling and nodding as they progressively kept doing more. In addition to the haircut he had a shave with a blade and a manicure. The man looked like David Beckham when he came back, that was 8yrs ago and I think its about time he went for another makeover lol ...
It should be off the chats following the current inflation rate, FIRE and Retirement plans should be out of the options with seasonal job layoffs included! at this point having a job doesn't mean security rather people should join a business trade and build more streams.
ensure you add value to your life first not always to your employer, everyone is replaceable. I am always making sure of this to ensure my own sanity and future security.
Protect yourself against your job, Run a side business or contribute to an open earning project streamline that is unrelated to your day job, that way you develop an independent skill against layoffs.
I’m not a full time employee, but I’m doing treating my business the right way now, using an asset security keeps you well informed and also strengthen your interest on the long run. It’s their profession, all you need do is share a few percentage and you are on green!
I guess I'm an extremely slow traveler. I spend years in a place, not months. I'm living in Turkey now, but before that was Finland, Austria, Cambodia, and Mexico. I'm originally from the US.
@@whatareuthinking1 I was a teacher in Cambodia, but now I collect Social Security. You have to choose a country that is not expensive and live in an area where a car is not needed. I'm with my daughter. Traveling and learning about different cultures is part of her education. I'm actually able to save money every month.
Hey DK, Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! Hope you enjoy what you see, we think we will love it here! Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Great vlog guys....well put together....ill catch up on previous. Be sure to visit Cambodia while your in that neck of the woods...Siem Reap temples are amazing. 👌
After 20 years as a corporate expat having been to 40+ countries, I knew the value of geo-arbitrage and decided to retire abroad a long time ago. I spent years traveling to my short-list countries, living in each 1-3 months with the cost of living 50% less than the US. But it's nice to have a home base as even slow travel gets tiring after awhile. For me, that's Malaysia...not as popular as other countries but it ticks all my boxes!
Hey Linda, Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! We are excited to see Malaysia, some very good friends of ours (that do the same thing as us in slow travel) are heading to KL in a few weeks and we can't wait to hear what they have to tell us from there. 40+ countries! Goooo You!! That is impressive! Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Thanks for sharing your story! So interesting to hear. I’m always interested to hear from people who have been living or travelling abroad for a while 😉 Cheers! Dara
I like your style. I too feel better having a permanent abode to nest in when the constant travel starts to wear on me. With the cost of living in some parts of the world it is doable for many retirees.
We're currently on the exploration phase of our journey. No home base and staying 1-3 months in a place. Building a "short list" of places we would like to establish a new base when we are ready.
Hello 2goRoam! As a medschool prof, I can say for sure that the attention span of my students watching and effectively engaging my in my video lectures and presentation is just 10-15 minutes. At 15 minutes, they get antsy and start doing other things!! LOL! My unsolicited adivice- you can cut your long (20 minutes or more..) videos into smaller parts? Just a thought of course, oh, it also makes for faster upload times. Can't wait for you to come to the Philippines and meet you!
First time seeing your channel and really appreciated this info, as well as the way you presented it. But you’re both so soft-spoken that I had a hard time hearing you, especially when you added music in the background. Increasing the volume also increased background noise, so maybe the mics were turned down? 🤔 Regardless, heading off to explore what else you’ve posted! 😀
Hey Marijka! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! Ahh so sorry, we are always working on the sound, we will focus on this we promise! Best regards, Neil & Sarah
@@2GoRoam I've watched several more and it was an anomoly! I think it was the airport background and probably your trying not to be too loud. :-) Also, KUDOS for true freedom and getting rid of the house! People always worried about 'security' and possessions just don't understand the absolutely weight of it all.
Are you BONKERS? UK to Thailand is only 13 hours. I live in Bangkok, but come from Nottingham. I lived in China for 6 years and arrived with 10 words/phrases. Thank You in Thai is "Cop Koon Cap" for a man and Cop Koon Ka for a female. The word Cap or Ka is added on the end of everything you say as it means - "polite". Just subscribed. Cheers.
Hey David! Really appreciate the comment, if you watch our videos in detail you will find that we are indeed.... bonkers. Yes we were messed around by British Airways with cancelled flights. Cop Koon Cap for the comment. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Hello. Have you done a video on your travel “baggage” yet? If you sold your home and you travel all the time what do you take with you? Joe versus the Volcano “steamer trunks”? Or do you travel light? I imagine a carry on and backpack probably isn’t sufficient.
Hey Mark, Thank you so much for taking the time to get in touch. We made a video that came out I would say last June '21 which was a lot of fun. check that out but we have learned a whole lot since then, so maybe it needs updating or we may add this as a question on our planned Q&A, thanks for asking! Best regards, Neil & Sarah
I used to own a backpackers hostel. Being broke and unable to buy a house, when the prices have all risen is no fun at the end of travelling. I had one customer, who had all his money with Bernie Madoff. He would have got in lots of travelling, before the Ponzi scheme collapsed and Madoff was jailed. I stayed in contact with many of my guests over a very long period. The end outcomes were often not ideal.
Interesting video and really nice people. Without kids we have been travelling from age thirty on holidays in between work. Now we are both retired. What are your medical insurance costs per annum? Why a ten year window for travel and do you have money to live after that time? Do you have a residence if you get tired of travel or have health issues? We will always have a home base in an apartment after we sell the house. Stay safe and I look forward to watching the rest of your library!
U 2 arr amazing imo.. I am 52 retired and have been debating on doing something similar for the last 2 years since retirement..Covid slammed the breaks on that plan, but i now realize that i just used it as an excuse. An excuse to just sit in my comfort zone, but discovering this channel has just restoked my fire., thank you both..i wont go to the extreme of selling it all and ttaveling year round , but i can definately downsize, the kids are grown, im now single and i can definately live with half of what i currently am/ have -home etc.. i can ttavel comfortably 5 or so months a year. I still want that anchor home im feeling but i can definately downsize and use those monies to gain a little knowledge of the world we live in..thank u both for restoking my engines fire, there are No excuses uve both shown me..Btw its is amazing to me how u two look so much healthier/younger and spiritually happier today compared to your very first video..WOW -im ready.
This is a great topic! I just found your channel and like your editing style. I'm planning to make a video covering similar topic (top retirement destinations). Thanks for the video!
As an American boy I lived in Izmir Turkey during the 70’s. It was magical. We lived on the local economy and every weekend in the summer we would camp Kusadasi in our family’s VW camper with a snap on room tent and roof tent. It was an incredible way to grow up. My allowance of $5 a week was a kings ransom and sustained my brother and I well. Going back in the spring of 2023 after 42 years!
Hi Sarah and Neil. New subscriber here from Canada. Love your content. I am of the same mindset. I have been slow travelling for 40 years and love that people are finally spreading their travel money around instead of just in the traditional spots. I recently bought a home in Mexico and will be moving there within the next year. I have a unique work schedule where I work 28 days in a row with 14 days off and the plan is to commute to Mexico for the next few years until I retire full time. Working in Canada and commuting to Mexico, for now, will enable me to live within my means and still be able to travel when I retire full time. Perhaps, someday, we will be in the same part of the world. If so, the first round is on me. Happy travels.
I live in Bangkok, and have 2 friends who work for Qatar Airways. 1 is Chinese and the other is Thai. My Chinese friend had problems when she returned to China and found she couldn't get a new job because the airline hadn't issued a certificate to her. But eventually, she returned to work with the airline as the pandemic eased. A troubling time for everyone. Enjoyed this latest creation, thanks you.
Hi Guys..... wish I'd picked up on your blog 2 weeks ago... I been doing the same as you since 2010.. I'm a digital nomad so rumble around all sort of places..... I'm in BKK now if you need any extra help let me know. Been in and out of Thailand for years, know lots of places to stay and lovely locations at a tiny price, can sort out phones, wifi, medical supplies where to go what to see and pay no more than locals...... enjoy the slow touring, its great when you get used to it... I am a little older but still in my 50's your best getting a banking app on your phone so you can pay for things off it and not worry so much about cards all the time
Hey Ian! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! Yes that would be helpful, we will be getting down to BKK soon enough, how long are you staying in Bangkok? Best regards, Neil & Sarah
@@2GoRoam I'm here until July, though I'm visiting Phuket next week, more than happy to pass on a few tips on making life easier... I get a portable wifi if you can at one of the main Phone service providers like True .. they are 4G or 5G computable and you can change the sim card in them when you travel to different countries.. Ive got 3... you just have to buy a contract ( short term where every you base yourself) and for about $60 USD you have your own wifi to travel around with.
You are living my dream. I will watch all your videos and prepare for my traveling adventures. I'll be 50 in three years, so good time to start plotting the goals.
Your video was posted in May 2022 but the info is like it was May 2019. We would like some details on how you got into Thailand or wherever you are. What did you have to do to get there. What are the hoops and how did you navigate that? More practical and detailed information would be more useful than the 20,000 foot perspective of 2019.
Welcome to Thailand I know you'll have an amazing time. The best way to pick up small Thai phrases is just by listening to Thai's speak. You can finish any simple polite phrase with "Ka" for ladies and "Kup/Krup" for men for example "Sa-wa-dee" is hello/good day and "Sa-wa-dee Ka/Kup" makes it more polite
Hey McDamon, Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! We are listening hard and we have the Sa-wa-see and also thanking people now too. It will be a slow process :-) Thank you for the kind welcome! Best regards, Neil & Sarah
I use google fi here in the Philippines and they cut off my data because I am not using it primarily in the states, but the talk and text remain operational, so 2 factor authentication works.
Hey Papti! Thank you so much for getting in touch and leaving us a great positive comment. We have been inundated with comments in the last week and we're both struggling to keep up with the replies but we wanted you to know that we have read your comment and we discuss every one of them as we see them between us and we are humbled that you took time to get in touch and also to leave a question. Thanks again, people like you make this channel tick! We are planning to set aside a day a week to reply to comments, so please keep them coming. Best wishes Neil & Sarah
Guys, I’m 52 years young and really appreciate your most enjoyable content. I too would love to travel as you do, however i still I have children at home that won’t be happening for a while yet. Keep up the excellent content.👍
***Question, please!***** I normally wouldn't ask a question until I have a few more of your videos under my belt, but since you asked, here is a question I'm sure you've heard a lot of as it concerns nearly all retirees. You both look quite youngish... my spouse and I each have about a decade or so on the two of you. I'm 62, he's 64. We're concerned about Health Insurance and my research thus far is telling me that it's going to be expensive, perhaps a budget buster and likely about the most expensive of all travel categories. Since we are Americans, we are accustomed to be ripped off from the medical industry every time we turn around, make an appointment or even have prescriptions filled. Any advice? And thanks.
Hey Admin, Yes, we are 53 and 51.... you will see us looking less and less young... keep watching :-) Fabulous question and is an area we need to learn in but will cover this in the Q&A Questions for sure! Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Do you want a trick? Am from San Francisco but living in Tokyo now. Every time I travelled down to South Asia, i enter Japan first. Then you go to any travel agencies, and get insurances for south Asia. It is sold separately from flight and hotels. If the prices of flights within South Asia us cheaper to buy in Asia usually i get r/t from bbk to change Mai, or bbk to Singapore or Bali. I don't get extra leg on the same flight itinerary because cost much more.
Just found your channel and watched your first VLOG. Really liked it. I enjoy a couple other travel vloggers by couples on youtube (Snail Travelers and Pure Detour) who had the spiriti and courage to stop working, sell their homes, and start traveling. If you make it to Mexico, check out vlogger Jerry Brown Travels (Jerry and Lori Brown) in Lake Ajihic about an hour from Guadalahara. Again, your story is inspirational.
Hey John! The Snail Travelers are great friends of ours, in fact we are having a video chat with them later today, we'll tell them about your comment 😃. We will be in Mexico again so will check those guys out 👍 Best wishes Neil & Sarah
Hey Daydreamer, Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! Yes we have seen a few storms already and it makes our british weather look pathetic.... there are storms and there are STORMS! Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Great video! Can't wait to see Bangkok! Thailand is on my wish-list too. I thought about you guys this morning because I saw an article about how inflation is seeping into the Air BNB market and costs have gone up 37% over the last year or so. Have you found that to be the case? The article may have just pertained to the States . . .
Hey Mel! Thank you so much as ever. Thailand is a joy for all senses! Yes we are hearing the same about Airbnb costs and I think that just plays more and more into the need to travel using the benefit of low cost locations. We will be talking about our accommodation costs in Thailand while we are here. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Hey Dora! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! You know the frustrating thing is Sarah told me I had mis-spelt it but I forgot to change it. LOL. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
I just found you guys. We are looking to travel across Europe at 65. I am an off the beatn path traveler. What are the places you mention in Turkey at 5:12 mark? Thank you.
Proud of you both! I'm 37 and plan to retire and travel the world with my at age 42. Slow travel is really cool because you really get to absorb that destination like a proper local.
Hi Neil and Sarah, thought I'd pop in to see where you are. Geoarbitrage - hadn't heard the term before. I suppose that's what we're doing also, especially with my husband still working online from Mexico for a Canadian company. 57% cheaper...WOW! You just said you're at Qatar airport for several hours, chills ran down my spine. Obviously since you posted this video, Sarah came out unscathed. How frustrating about your Revolut cards! Another good video, thanks - Anne
Hey Anne, Welcome, lovely to hear from you in the comments again :-) Sounds like you are doing just that, working for a high cost location, living low cost, you are doing well. Sarah did good on our journey but it was long.... we were wired at the end of that video! Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Hey List Planet! We were looking at the question about us, what stands in our way and the blockers we work through. Guessing the video didn't help you, that's cool, we appreciate that. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
@@2GoRoam Its not really a question, its a statement. And you can retire abroad. I'm actually in Thailand now. Seems clickbaity but I guess it works out for you.

Liking the soft pivot to the informational/financial. Enjoy Thailand. Do not ride the elephants!! There is a lovely Elephant Sanctuary by Chiang Mai where you can stay and volunteer. Great well run experience. If u havent been before-Be careful of the scams in Bangkok- only take a taxi that turns on the metre, dont let anyone "help" you if u seem lost(even if they say they are tourist police), dont get a taxi from the shopping malls-even the "designated official" areas. Try all of the street food that is cooked. Do not do the fish pedicures. Do get the concierge to arrange a trusted tuk tuk esp with the drivers in chiang mai are known to be the worst in Thailand. Do still take the tuk tuks bc they are insane and fun. Do check that you dont go to an area that is doing crop burning....
Hey Jmac, Yes, we are changing up the channel a little and some people like that and others less so. But we will discuss that on the Q&A. We look forward to seeing the elephants and will research heavily before we visit any sanctuary, so if you know the name of the place you mention here, we would love to know. I know it will be emotional for us to meet these amazing creatures. All great tips here. We are taking our time and are always very circumspect of unsolicited help. So we will tread very carefully... thank you for the heads up. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
@@2GoRoam Elephant Nature Park was excellent. Ethical. Clean. Experienced. We would go back to volunteer. Magical experience. We also did the Thai Farm Cooking School outside of Chiang Mai- visit the market, their farm, and learn to cook. Very well run. Some of the best excursions we have done.
Big ups to everyone working effortlessly trying to earn a living while building wealth. I’m 40 and my husband 44 we are both retired with over $1 million in net worth and no debts. Currently living smart and frugal with our money. Saving and investing lifestyle in the made it possible for us this early even till now we earn monthly through passive income. We are currently in Greece enjoying our retirement...
@faithpaul7479 Alright so generally, investing requires higher knowledge. For this reason, It's important to have a solid support structure (financial consultant) to guide you through especially in asset picking. I operate with (REGINA LOUISE COLLARO) an investment advisor who partners with a licensed wealth management firm. For the record, the experience has been the best for my finance. She is quite popular for her services so you might have heard of her. She made me financially stable investing through her help, now I earn on a monthly basis through her passive income strategy...So I’ll advise you do get a good Investment advisor for yourself.
How about buying flights? Any tips on saving on that? I’m 74 years old, and single. It took this long for me to realize traveling. Thankfully I’m in good health👏🙏🌸
New subscriber. Thank you for taking so much time out of your day(s) to make this content. My girlfriend and I are travelling to Ireland for two weeks in August and are taking copious notes. We also plan to slow travel much more in the future, and possibly even live abroad from the U.S. for a year or two. Ireland is our first overseas venture together. We picked an English speaking country to make things easier for our first experience. Again, thank you. I will be binge watching more of your videos!
I have been doing slow travel since 2014 and staying 3 to 12 months at a time. Some of which has been long-term aid work. Really nice to spend time getting to know the locals who really open up when they know you will be around for a while.
You two look great with no sleep. Another clever video! Way to go. How long do you plan to travel in Asia? Any plans to explore Africa? I noticed you didn't list traveling out of a suitcase as a pitfall. Would consider it as a pro or con? On one had you have simplified your life to live out of one suitcase. The other side is you have to carry all you have. I imagine now you could get by with a carry-on thinking how hot and humid it will be. Looking forward to next week. Thanks for the informative, relevant, and entertaining content.
Hey Kimberly, Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! I just typed the longest reply ever to this comment and RUclips didn't save it.... ARGH!!!!!! Suitcases are certainly a PRO for us, just the right size and if I didn't have to carry so much tech which is heavy, I would switch to just a 40l backpack personally (although Sarah likes having a case option). For us now it is more about making marginal improvements in what we carry and they seem to give us the biggest benefit. I have struggled finding a laptop bag for carry on that is actually working for me, I have tried many. I have picked up something inexpensive here in Bangkok and hey presto! I think I have cracked it... so very happy with that. Also, I worked in South Africa for some time so would love to explore further, Africa is high on our list! Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Hey Euro Asia! Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! Yes we will be including that in our travels, we have done a little of it in the past. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
I'm a fan of yours, since a bit before you went to Mexico. I'm planning in investing by purchasing condos and/or townhouses in the Yucatan peninsula, mainly Cancun, Tulum, Puerto Morelos and so. This to put them to rent in AIRBNB. Could you give me some tips on what I should look into and what I should make available to succeed. Thank you again for your wise tips. I've traveled around the world too but not that slow. I've got to sit and think how many countries I've been already. I'll tell you later.
Hey Heidi, Hope you are well. That is a fabulous question, this will be in the Q&A for sure. Tell us where you have been Heidi! Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Not really the title of this video....I retired at 55...Was born in Ireland, worked in the UK...sold nothing, was not entitled to a pension until I was 65. Since retirement I have lived in France, Mexico, Argentina , Paraguay and back to France.

Hey Valerie, Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! Really great to hear that this kind of video is resonating with you, that gives us a real boost. We can't wait to explore Thailand :-) Best regards, Neil & Sarah
Thank you very much for the video both I retired in 2019 at 55 my wife in 2020 and we bought a static caravan on a site. We've rented out our wholly owned home which covers the caravan's bills and leaves some over for spending money. This, together with our savings, has allowed us to travel regularly since, giving the freedom of staying in places for long periods, even during the pandemic when allowed! Our aim, like you, is to travel as much as possible in the next 10 years. As you say, while we're hopefully fit and healthy enough to. Enjoy!
I have Google Voice with my US number ported in, and have use it with no issues for 5 years in Mexico. As long as you have your cell phone data, which mine is with a provider in Mexico now or Wi-Fi connection.
Hey Bob! Thanks for getting in touch, Does your google voice also enable you to receive text messages for Two Factor Authentication? Sadly being from the UK, Google voice isn't an option for us, but thanks for sharing for our US viewers. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
@@2GoRoam Yes it does work for two-factor authentication. I've only had issues with trying to use it for the Initial setup to go into my IRS account (I just switched to my email account for verification) Instarem money exchange and a couple others won't recognize my phone number, as they want a carrier subscription number to verify, I guess. No issues with setting up accounts with WorldRemit, Remitly money exchange (the two I use most) and others. I'm curious when you say you don't have it available for you in the UK. Can't you not just create a new Google account that's out of the UK that has Google Voice available. I ran into geoblocks trying to download apps when in Mexico that stated they weren't available in my country. Instead of changing my country in my current Google account to Mexico, which they also required a mexico-based credit card to verify which I didn't have, plus you can't change it back for one year, I found a way around it by just creating a new Google email in Mexico, and I switch to that when I have to download an app that is only available in Mexico. Once the app is downloaded, it doesn't matter which Google account you are logged into, the apps still work.
@@2GoRoam I forgot to subscribe when I was watching this video so I just did now. I'm interested in your travels because I would like to do something similar, as I was thinking before COVID-19 hit, and now the Russia war with Ukraine☹️, of getting a 90 day apartment "home base" in Riga, Latvia because of the low cost there, and then taking multi-day trips to different areas across Europe by flight or even rail. Then when my Szechuan Visa was up, head over to England and visit some of the other countries that's not a part of the Szechuan States, before making the flight back to New York or elsewhere I decided to go.
You could also use google voice to keep a home number to your country and travel. I have Google Fi and Google voice and use them together. Yes, you have to make it home every so often to keep the Fi service. I travel for half the year and return home for the other half.
We got super excited when you said 36 hours of travel that you were popping down to NZ...alas it was the long layovers. We really need to get you sorted with lounge access, nothing better than a free massage, shower and sleeping pod 😴 😌. You are in for such a treat in Thailand....reach out if you want any info. Also be sure to visit boots to top up any medical supplies you need.
Hey Reve, We will be there one day! Do not fret :-) We have a good friend in NZ that is desperate for us to come and visit. Yes, help with this lounge access thing... it will help get Sarah off my back when we get to airports :-) Best regards, Neil & Sarah
I have been to bangkok and there is so much to see but you will have to used to the noise and pollution. Do you use memberships on credit cards and with apps to get points for free items such as upgrades or towards flights?
Hey Merridy, Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! It's and assault on the senses isn't it. From the UK, we don't get the same kind of benefits that we see our American friends get. We have some points that we are able to build up but it is a lot slower a journey to get anything worthwhile than we would like. Best regards, Neil & Sarah
This is the first video of yours I've seen so if I'm out of turn making this suggestion - I understand. But have you considered getting a satellite phone if you need to be able to contact your parents? Granted when I had one I was locked into one location for work and I got my service through the country I was in - so I'm not even sure what today's technology for satphones is like in 2022. I was able to with my parents even though I was in a developing nation halfway around the world and the voice quality was amazing.
Now that you're in the Southeast Asia, don't forget to visit us in Malaysia including the Malaysian Borneo... Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Philippines, Brunei (a one way trip is good enough), Indonesia, Singapore, Myanmar...
My family are retired now for 15 years to live in Baja Sur, Mexico, East Cape, Sea of Cortez. What an amazing positive move. Our pension goes amazingly farther than the USA. We live in a beautiful casa / home with taxes at less $100 USD per year. That is like a bonus every year given what we used to pay for property tax! Health care for 3 - 100% - about $1,200 USD per year. In the USA, I pay that in 90 days! Our health care includes prescription drugs. The best thing - it is safe, love the people, great weather and the cuisine. Love the outdoors, etc. Everyone has to figure it out for themselves. Go live somewhere you think might be right for two or three months, maybe 6 months, or a year. Then when you think it is right - make the move. WIFI - about 4G level here. Continues to get better - but have no complaints. Can watch any movie streaming and connect that to our SMART to TV.

Teaser alert.... it's the worst paying work either of us have ever done, including our Paper Rounds when we were 13 years old :-)

Hi Neil and Sarah, I can imagine a lot of work for a little payback but I have had conflicting feedback on this so I would be interested in your views on your Q&A....Enjoy your day in Bangkok as you explore another dimension of your travel...
Have a great day yourself :-)
I've made over $250k since then
Mind if I ask you to recommend this particular manager?
Please Google Rebecca Noblett Roberts and do your own research. She has portfolio management down to a science
Just ran an online search on her name and came across her websiite; pretty well educated. thank you for sharing.
Hey Linda,
FAN-BLOODY-TASTIC! Thank you. Right we are looking into this now! Brilliant :-)

*Food for 2 went from $800 /mth to $400/mth (and this is eating out most days in Thailand, vs grocery shopping every weekend and only eatingout once a week when we went grocery shopping.)
* gas costs about the same but Thialand is not spread as much as cities in Canada, so usually my cost is about 1/2, so instead of $60 per fillup every 2 weeks, it's about $30 per fill up every 2 weeks.
* Internet is about 1/2 the price for 5 times the speed (plus I get cell phone and TV included which saves about $100/mth and I get better service included.) ...
* Utilities are cheap I believe but it's hard to tell as water, electricity and property tax are all part of the rent where here I have to pay for water (~$5/mth) electricity (averages about $60/mth and I use AC when I feel like it, which is a lot for at least 6 months of the year) garbage 20 baht / month (or around $0.75 cad) and property taxes are $0 (any property under 1 rai (about 1/2 an acre) has not property taxes (my wife has about 10 rais around the province and she paid some redlicious tax of maybe $15 for the year, which to be fair was about 1/2 the usual cost because of a Covid discount.)
So my monthly expenses went from probably $3,100 cad (just basic rent, utilities, food & transportation) to about $890 (if I were still renting the 2 bedroom 2 bathroom house I rented when I first moved here!) Since we bought a new home (about $70K cad all in after furniture and upgrades like solar yard lights, higher fencing, security cameras, sheds, landscaping) and car outright with no loans, our actual expenses are closer to $500 cad/mth ... the only thing missing right now is health insurance (have to look into that soon, but for the most part, besides emergencies, health care out of pocket is pretty cheap here ...

I can't help but say, what you're living on now, that's about what we live on in rural USA. We're retired, and live simply, but not hurting for anything.
WOW.....THANK YOU, Linda!!!!!
One thing that sucks about traveling for so long (I’ve been doing it since 2006), is that you disassociate yourself from family and friends. You miss out on weddings, births, birthdays, graduations, holidays, etc… eventually people forgot about you in an intimate way.
ahh that's sad :(
That is true.
Sounds great !!

Exactly. This was not titled correctly, of zero interest to me and after 10 minutes I had quite enough.
Agree - the title and the content are not the same. Watched 1 minute and checked the comments to confirm they really were going to talk about “slow travel” versus retiring abroad.
i was misled to this vid
I really must try NOT to select this video AGAIN - 4th time. 🤦♂️

Protect yourself against your job, Run a side business or contribute to an open earning project streamline that is unrelated to your day job, that way you develop an independent skill against layoffs.

Hey Linda,
Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! We are excited to see Malaysia, some very good friends of ours (that do the same thing as us in slow travel) are heading to KL in a few weeks and we can't wait to hear what they have to tell us from there.
40+ countries! Goooo You!! That is impressive!
Best regards,
Neil & Sarah
Thanks for sharing your story! So interesting to hear. I’m always interested to hear from people who have been living or travelling abroad for a while 😉
Cheers! Dara
I like your style. I too feel better having a permanent abode to nest in when the constant travel starts to wear on me. With the cost of living in some parts of the world it is doable for many retirees.
We lived in Penang Malaysia for 2 years. Loved it, but eventually moved to the Philippines due to the wife being from there.
Excellent video-----Thank you----God bless!

@@2GoRoam I've watched several more and it was an anomoly! I think it was the airport background and probably your trying not to be too loud. :-) Also, KUDOS for true freedom and getting rid of the house! People always worried about 'security' and possessions just don't understand the absolutely weight of it all.
Exceptional clip! We are planning our retirement now and Montenegro is high on our list. Now it is even higher!

Hello. Have you done a video on your travel “baggage” yet? If you sold your home and you travel all the time what do you take with you? Joe versus the Volcano “steamer trunks”? Or do you travel light? I imagine a carry on and backpack probably isn’t sufficient.
Hey Mark,
Thank you so much for taking the time to get in touch.
We made a video that came out I would say last June '21 which was a lot of fun. check that out but we have learned a whole lot since then, so maybe it needs updating or we may add this as a question on our planned Q&A, thanks for asking!

I'm glad I found you guys , love the vlog !!! New subscriber ..
Hey Bill!
Thank you, that sounds really cool. Appreciate you getting in touch.

I was thinking that covid was just an excuse and then you said it yourself! 😊
Ready, steady, go...good luck :)
Hi
Wow I'm excited for you. God be with you.
This is a great topic! I just found your channel and like your editing style. I'm planning to make a video covering similar topic (top retirement destinations). Thanks for the video!
Thanks a lot: good info, great personalities. Best of luck for your choice of life!
Be prepared for a culture shock...Turkey is far more industrialised and islamic now.
@@antejl7925 I am. Pretty sure I will be shocked.
Just found you guys. Amazing! You two are SO adorable! Thanks so much for the info :)

@@2GoRoam I'm here until July, though I'm visiting Phuket next week, more than happy to pass on a few tips on making life easier... I get a portable wifi if you can at one of the main Phone service providers like True .. they are 4G or 5G computable and you can change the sim card in them when you travel to different countries.. Ive got 3... you just have to buy a contract ( short term where every you base yourself) and for about $60 USD you have your own wifi to travel around with.
@@iandonachie9549 That's a really good tip!
Keep in touch, hopefully we can meet for a beer somewhere.
I must admit I clicked because of your click bate title 😉... but you did not disappoint. Great video. Love your energy :)
Hey McDamon,
Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment!
We are listening hard and we have the Sa-wa-see and also thanking people now too. It will be a slow process :-) Thank you for the kind welcome!

Looks delicious will try tonight thanks for the idea. I enjoy making pasta without boiling the pasta. A starchy texture is what is created. ❤ NC
Any advice? And thanks.
Hey Admin,
Yes, we are 53 and 51.... you will see us looking less and less young... keep watching :-)
Fabulous question and is an area we need to learn in but will cover this in the Q&A Questions for sure!

Hey John!

Great video! Can't wait to see Bangkok! Thailand is on my wish-list too. I thought about you guys this morning because I saw an article about how inflation is seeping into the Air BNB market and costs have gone up 37% over the last year or so. Have you found that to be the case? The article may have just pertained to the States . . .

Hey Anne,
Welcome, lovely to hear from you in the comments again :-)

Hey Jmac,
Yes, we are changing up the channel a little and some people like that and others less so.

Smart travel.
The paramotor caught my attention. Where was that? Antalya? I have license to fly. Would be interested in the community in Turkey.
Hey Kimberly,
Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment!

Best regards,
Neil & Sarah
Wow, you both fantastic to make it to my beautiful country!
You could also use google voice to keep a home number to your country and travel. I have Google Fi and Google voice and use them together. Yes, you have to make it home every so often to keep the Fi service. I travel for half the year and return home for the other half.
Hey Malkijah!

It's and assault on the senses isn't it. From the UK, we don't get the same kind of benefits that we see our American friends get. We have some points that we are able to build up but it is a lot slower a journey to get anything worthwhile than we would like.

You want the best but your pocket doesn't allow you so what should you do ?
GeoArbitrage? :-) ;-)
Just decorate your casita in the colors the Commandante likes…no way to Mexico
@@ThuyPham-lr5dc === Our casa (not casita) is several colors. LOL Including golden rod, cream white, some green and plenty of purple. The one thing you can especially enjoy about Mexico - they are not afraid of color.
Can I ask which healthcare company you chose ??

That’s excellent!
Hi Neil & Sarah, pleased to find your channel and will subscribe. Happy you are on an adventure. Quite an exciting one at that! I can imagine all the logistics, connectivity and e-commerce/banking gets to be tricky. Look forward to following along with your journey. Cheers!
Just Found your videos what Fun Thank you
at what minute do we learn what happens at Year Ten and thereafter?
Love your videos guys! Looking forward to viewing your Thailand leg of your trip. It’s on our itinerary also. Hey Sarah do you mind if I ask what facial moisturiser do you use? Your skin has such a lovely healthy glow. We’re the same age and my skin is so dry lately 😫
Hey Annette!
Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! I don't use anything too special and being on the road makes getting what I want easy, but I tend to go for something sensitive and if it contains hyaluronic acid.
Hope that helps.
Best regards,
Neil & Sarah
And I just had a long conversation in Spanish!!! today at my favorite: Mercado Sano!
She was so grateful I was speaking in Spanish! My neighborhood ~La Lejona II ~ behind La Comer about 3 blocks! Very few expats 😁 I prefer it that way.
Add your Revolut card to your phone. I almost never use my physical card.
I just barbers anywhere I go 4 (show 4 fingers)back, sides, and 5 on top, clipper comb sizers are the same in most places.😎
I was thinking of going to Switzerland. One month at the lovely hotel is $18,000. Wow! Gotta rethink that 🤨
Hey Marigold!
Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a comment! Yes, that could turn into the shortest retirement in history :-)
Best regards,
Neil & Sarah
My thought about your Resolut card. Could you have them send it to a British Embassy in a future country you will visit?
I'm guessing the cheaper countries are about 30% the cost of the expensive contries?
