I gave a brief intro on Karaite Judaism to a group of 5th-7th graders from a conservative synagogue. The sound is not great, I was a bit rusty, my shirt collar was sticking out of my coat, but there is some good info here.
    A few notes:
    (1) I had wanted to encourage these students to take pride in their Jewish tradition, even though it is something difficult to do the right thing as a minority. I don't think that came across as well as I had wanted;
    (2) I slipped up at one point and stated that the reason Karaites pray on rugs is likely due to the Rabbinic prohibition of prostrating on "concrete." I should have said "stone," as I did elsewhere during the presentation; and
    (3) When discussing the differences between Karaite and Rabbanite dietary laws, I was asked why shawarma is generally not permissible for Karaites. I should have just said that it usually seasoned with a particular type of fat that is specifically prohibited in the Torah. Instead I grossed the kids out by telling them where the fat comes from.

Thank you so much. I was stuck in the middle between orthodox and karaite , but after reading deciding milk and meat is acceptable in the Torah, I have decided I would like to convert to karaite judaism. I wish there was a center/community in midwest. Thank you for this teaching and your courage. God bless you.

      +Ben Rios
YHWH does not command us to literally wear Ṭoṭafot; in point of fact the Torah does betray what it means by that word, when in 1 of the 4 pesuqim of this category it employs the word Zikaron (memory) instead of Ṭoṭafot. This leads, given the commandment's context, to the conclusion that we are expected to study the Torah well until it is stored in our memory AS IF its commandments are placed between our eyes like a precious jewel.
The "oral" law is a fictitious Rabbinic invention that distances its adherents from the true Torah.

    • @ZviJ1
      @ZviJ1 7 лет назад +2

+Ben Rios Even a great Rabbinical exegete, Rashbam, reached of his volition the same conclusion that the Qaraite Sages had reached where the "Ot"+"Ṭoṭafot" are concerned.
Your problem as a Rabbanite is compounded by the historic and Halakhic reality that the Pharisaic movement that fathered Rabbinic Judaism is the only stream in the religion of Israel that has ever decided that the Miṣwot in this category were meant to be observed in a literal/physical manner of affixing ritual accessories to certain body parts. This is not my opinion but historical fact verified by academic scholars.

@@ZviJ1 the oral law is not a rabbinic invention. It's a myth. What is an invention in your religion, which was invented in the 9th century by Anan Ben David. Your religion is a man-made religion.

    • @ZviJ1
      @ZviJ1 4 года назад

1.- Your last two sentences are logical fallacies, since Qaraite Judaism is a form of Judaism, which by definition precludes it from being a non-Jewish religion.
2.- Your script line that `Anan b. David invented Qaraism is Rabbinic propaganda long debunked by modern scholarship.
First off, competent scholars found that `Anan's exegetical method was much closer to Rabbinism's methods than the Qaraites.
Secondly, documents from the Middle Ages were found that show how the Ananites and Qaraites kept coexisting as separate movements into the 10th century.
Thirdly, `Anan's invention of a month long fast, or that only Maṣot from barley are valid and his blanket prohibition on consuming meat and drinking wine are NOT part of Qaraite Judaism.
Fourthly, there is no Abbasid record of `Anan ben Dawid having been imprisoned, even though the Abbasids were meticulous in recording all matters brought before the Calif and who was imprisoned. The myth not only does not show up until the 10th (possibly the 12th according to Nemoy) century, it also has two different versions: one which said that ‘Anan had a brother name Ḥananyah who succeeded the Exilarch Shelomo ben-Ḥisdai, while in the other it says the brother’s name was Yoshiyah. However, both are fiction and bear no relationship with historical fact, since Shelomo ben-Ḥisdai was succeeded by Yiṣḥaq Iskawi I, who was succeeded by Yehudah Zakkai. There never was an Exilarch named Ḥananyah or Yoshiyah.
The myth also claims that ‘Anan’s father was Shafaṭ and that he was only called ben-Dawid as a allusion to his Davidic descent. However, ‘Anan’s father was Dawid ben-Yehudah ben-Ḥisdai ben-Bustenai.
‘Anan ben-Shafaṭ disputed with the Exilarch Rav Huna II in the third century (Rav Huna II was Exilarch from 240 to 260), while the alleged imprisonment was supposed to have occurred in 769.
The 10th/12th century myth records what it claims was a secret conversation between ‘Anan and the Muslim scholar Abu Ḥanifa an-Nu‘man ibn Tabit (ignoring the fact that Abu Ḥanifa died in 767, two years before ‘Anan’s alleged imprisonment) in which the Muslim convinces ‘Anan to say that he was not the head of the Jews but of a different religion. If there was such a secret conversation, how could the author of the myth be privy to what was said?
None of the Rabbanite opponents of ‘Anan during his lifetime or that of his son or his grandson or great-grandson mention a dispute of the Exilarchate with a brother or him being imprisoned. If the things in the 10th/12th century myth were true, why is it that none of the opponents of ‘Anan or the Qaraites mention it until the 10th/12th century?
The Rabbanite Ga’on Naṭronai lived less than 90 years after ‘Anan, yet makes no mention of the alleged dispute over the office or imprisonment.
Leon Nemoy in his “Karaite Anthology”, p. 6-7 says that Naṭronai tells us nothing “about the contest for the office of the exilarch which allegedly served as the immediate cause of his apostasy. It seems reasonable to assume that Naṭronai’s silence signifies that he knew nothing about it, for it would have been to his advantage, had he knowledge of `Anan’s disqualification for the high office, to set it forth in detail in order to demonstrate the more convincingly, from his own point of view, `Anan’s unworthy and ungodly motives. Moreover, Naṭronai lived in the very center of the scene of `Anan’s activity and belonged to the higher strata of Rabbanite society, where the alleged particulars of `Anan’s secession should have been known best, had they been true.”
Someone who lived less than 90 years after ‘Anan would also know that the Exilarch Shelomo ben-Ḥisadai was succeeded by Yiṣḥaq Iskawi and he by Yehudah ben-Zakkai and that there was no Exilarch named Ḥananyah or Yoshiyah. Only someone from a much later time period could confuse the 3rd century ‘Anan ben-Shafaṭ and Rava Huna I with the 8th century ‘Anan ben-Dawid and a fictitious brother named Ḥananyah.

The additions, subtractions and contradictions to the true Torah in Rabbinic Judaism are man-made, which leaves little in Rabbinism that is not man-made. The Rabbinic argument that the "oral" law was handed down at Sinai together with the actual Torah is a Rabbinic myth and invention.

Tzitzit is based on wearing a garment with 4 strings on the corner. Wearing it as an undershirt is a "newer" tradition, as we can see in Egyptian art depicting western Semites wearing a tzitzit like a skirt or a kilt. Karaites CAN follow certain rabbinical interpretations if they choose to because it's their own interpretation that coincides with some aspects of rabbinical. Kippah was a much more convenient and practical substitute for a turban and so most Jewish sects use it (samartians use a fez and wrap it with a cloth but not put on the cloth like a turban).

@@dovygoodguy1296 I agree. Certainly in "proper" Rabbinical Judaism it is not obligatory. The situation about head covering among the Orthodox Rabbanites has become downright grotesque, where they insist on it and toss people out of synagogues for not wearing one. The same thing happens at the Western Wall's plaza, where the employees of the Wall's Heritage Foundation can bar males from it for refusing to put on one. Thankfully, the only Israeli organization in a power position at the Temple Mount's environment, the police, never attempts to enforce head covering for Jews there, and I always ascend to it bare headed with Scriptural Ṣiṣiyot on my attire.

Gods laws were for Gods chosen people entering the promised land as a new way of living outside of the pagan world they were so used to living in.... There is no solid evidence that it was also prohibited in order to distance the Israelites from aping a supposed pagan ritual where gentiles did this. There is no universal agreement among Jewish exegetes on what a "kid" is. It may be a suckling infant of cows, goats and sheep, or it is just of the latter two species. I must say as a Karaite Jew that even modern Karaites have it wrong. The Law is ONLY Deuteronomy. Moses says repeatedly do what I tell you this day and STRICTLY add nor substract anything. That is the Command. Even tho circumcission isn't included in Deuteronomy it was performed prior to crossing so it is the only thing outside Deuteronomy that can, with reason, be applied as Law also. It is as if modern Karaites advocate just the Torah but don't actually read what Deuteronomy says. Moses is very very clear on this. I invite all Karaite Jews to read it. There is absolutely no way anyone can argue with my assertion without sounding like a Rabbinical Jew. Deuteronomy is the only Law.

Since you believe that all your sins have been "forgiven" because you believe J. Christ "the savior" died for and instead of you, you are in real trouble!
Please don't kid yourself. Not only are you still sin-laden, you have added a new, terrible sin to the old batch! You are guilty of idolatry for worshiping a false "savior" and god. The word of YHWH plainly states that He (YHWH) alone is Savior; (Isaiah 43:11). He alone can forgive sin (Isaiah 43:25). He alone is the True Deity (Isaiah 43:10)!!
Moreover, you cannot "believe away" sin! Magic plays absolutely no role in the system of sin and atonement established by YHWH, the sole Creator of this universe and pure God of Israel. Atonement by "faith" is not part of YHWH's setup. The only way a sinner can get his sins forgiven is by repenting and; by doing and fulfilling what YHWH wants him to do!! YHWH says: "Again, when I say to the wicked, you shall surely die; if he turn from his sin (repents) and do that which lawful and right ("good works")... he shall surely live, he shall NOT die!! NONE of his sins which he had committed shall be remembered against him! He has done that which is lawful and right! He shall surely LIVE!" (Ezekiel 33:14-16).
Ezekiel was a prophet of YHWH. He wasn't a Christian preacher!
In Moses' day, the repentant sinner usually (NOT ALWAYS) offered an animal sacrifice to symbolize his "giving" and YHWH's "accepting".
Later prophets elaborated on how animal sacrifices are worthless without obedience:
"Behold, to OBEY is BETTER than sacrifice!" (1 Samuel 15:22). "Do I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?" (Psalms 50:13).
"By practicing mercy and truth is sin atoned for!" (Proverbs 16:6).
HOW can you come to YHWH? YHWH provides the answer: "Return, O Israel, to YHWH your almighty, for you have stumbled in your iniquity! Take with you WORDS and return to YHWH! (WHAT words?) Say to Him: forgive all iniquity and accept GOODNESS (good works). Thus, will we offer, INSTEAD of bullocks (blood) the offerings of our LIPS!" (Hosea 14:2-3).
According to the word of YHWH, NO ONE can die for you! If you don't believe me, read Exodus 33:31-33; Deuteronomy 24:16; Ezekiel 18:3-4. But YHWH's demands can be met by you, if only you will know the truth. You can come to YHWH on your own! Read YHWH's word! "With what offering can I come before YHWH, and bow myself before the Mighty One on high? Should I come to him with burnt offerings, with year-old calves? Will YHWH be pleased by thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Should I give my first-born for my transgression (human sacrifice, like the crucifixion!), the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? It has been told you, O man, what is good, and what YHWH (not religious doctrine but YHWH!) requires of you: ONLY to DO what is just (YHWH's COMMANDMENTS) and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your Almighty!" (Micah 6:6-8).
Hallelu-Yahh, praise YHWH! His Salvation is open to all! No believing in fairy-stories, no bloody crucifixions! No "divine suicide" on a Roman Cross! Plain and simple is the Way of YHWH! Will you take Him at His Word today?

18.8 And he took curd, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat.

"to remember that the LORD brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand".
Why on your HAND (maybe so you can see it yourself and remember), Why between your EYES (maybe so the people will see if when they look in your EYES.)
about the word TOTAFOT . probably from LE"ATIF (to lecture, to preach). להטיף מוסר. as it is mentioned few times in the bible: that when/if children ask you why are you wearing tefilin, then you will teach/preach/lecture them that it is to remember that god had freed the people from egypt.
DEUT 11.2 "And know ye this day; for I speak not with your children that have not known, and that have not seen the chastisement of the LORD your God, His greatness, His mighty hand, and His outstretched arm,"
actually what should be in the Tefillin is the story of god freeing the hebrews from pharao" . IT IS the most important event in the the life of the hebrews....
just FYI..: do you know that muslim observe yom kippur on the ashura day. the 10th days of their first month.....10 of muharam.
WHY? when mohamad saw the jews fasting on yom kippur, he asked they why, and they said: we are fasting to remember the mighy hand of god that freed us from egypt! (i am writting this as a cross reference for historic value). so mohamad thought it was a good idea (hadit bukhari), and suggested the muslims to do like the jews and mohamad fasted that day.. and they still do it up to these days.
for historic value, and putting yourself in the shoes of the hebrews, what can be more important than getting out of slavery????

You are in real trouble!

Shawn is full of baloney. Karaites have no "Tradition", that parallels the "Rabbinic" Tradition. The practice of Karaism which deviated from Judaism was invented by Anan ben David in the 8th Century. He was the disgruntled eldest son of the head of the Babylonian Jewish community whose father rejected him and appointed his younger brother to take his place. so he made up his own religion. Supposedly it was based on the literal Written Bible and rejects the Oral Torah. But this too is false. Anan ben David selectively rejected many interpretations of Jewish Law as recorded in the Talmud, but he also accepted some of them.
He is also wrong about the fat used on shwarma. It is not the fat of the tail; real Judaism doesn't use that fat. Most shwarma nowadays is actually turkey meat, with fat on top to give it flavor. The fat is from butcher trimmings of fat from the forequarter of a lamb, not the tail.
The bottom line: Judaism is a Tradition carried on directly from Moses, the greatest prophet, to today. Karaism is a religion invented by a man who wasn't even a scholar, certainly not a prophet. It has about as much validity as Scientology, also invented by a man in recent times, who was not a religious authority at all, and who likewise was not motivated by devotion to God.

The problem with claims by Ortho's is that they are too long on half-truths, distortions, innuendo and outright lies.
While `Anan b. Dawid surely did not base himself completely on the true Torah of Moshe, virtually all credible scholars consider his movement, Ananism, a separate one from Qaraite Judaism, despite how Qaraites embraced him as if he were one of theirs and indeed the founder of their movement (this erroneous notion is still popular among the traditional Qaraite Jews). This was deduced not only from the fact Medieval sources kept on distinguishing the Ananites from the Qaraites through the 10th century, but also from the fact `Anan's exegetical method was far more similar to the Rabbinic\Talmudic system than to Peshat.
Secondly, there is no Abbasid record of `Anan ben Dawid having been imprisoned, even though the Abbasids were meticulous in recording all matters brought before the Calif and who was imprisoned.
If the things in the 10th/12th century myth were true, why is it that none of the opponents of ‘Anan or the Karaites mention it until the 10th/12th century?

Sorry to disappoint, but Qaraite Jews do have tradition that parallels Rabbinic tradition, and in the majority of establishments where Shawarma is sold, the fatty tails of sheep are still used on it. If you differ with this you are proving your own ignorance. And of course real Judaism does not use this fat other than in the sacrificial offerings, since the Torah forbade Israelites to consume it. Yet severely contorted Judaism, Rabbinic Judaism, does approve of Jews consuming this type of fat, but it only introduced this laxity centuries after the AD 70 Destruction.
Moshe Nevi'enu and Rabbenu would barely recognize the latest contortion of Israel's pure biblical religion by rabbis that is known as Orthodox Judaism. However, it is safe to assume he would feel slightly more at ease about Qaraite Judaism, which at least in many aspects is much closer to the actual Torah and Nakh than Orthodoxy. Moshe b. `Amram would certainly reject any Rabbinic claims that the rabbis throughout the generations represent authentic or original Judaism.
I have already debunked your refuted drivel whereby Qaraite Judaism is a separate religion invented by `Anan b. Dawid. You should deindoctrinate yourself of this tripe, ditch the Rabbinic propaganda and diversify your sources to enable yourself to read up on the history of Judaism beyond the Rabbinic narrative in order to get much closer to the actual facts
